Would you volunteer to host a party for 40 people and then rush out to the store with no menu planned & no shopping list? No way!  You'd sit down and plan out what everyone was going to bring, make a menu of app's & drinks, look up some recipes, and then make a detailed list of exactly what you need to buy. So why on earth would you head out to a WEDDING FAIR / BRIDAL EXPO with absolutely no plan, and just "see what happens"? Today on the Wedding Planning Podcast we're going to take inventory of your priorities, and make a list of your top goals for your day spent at the wedding fair.  This way you can MAXIMIZE your time spent with vendors and gathering inspiration, and minimize the stress & overwhelm factor of wandering through hundreds of booths full of noisy commotion.  After our time together today, when the 15th DJ asks you if you want to dance, and the 22nd wedding planner asks you to spin their "wheel o' fun" ... ... you can confidently smile, say no thanks, and keep walking.  To submit questions for an upcoming show, simply visit our website and leave me a voicemail!  Cheers to you! STREAMLINE + SIMPLIFY has been a tagline for the WPP literally since I created the show way back in 2015.  (Look closely, it's even on our old logo!) Not only are these two of my favorite words in the English language - that I try and live by in ALL aspects of my life - more specifically, they perfectly summarize my approach to wedding planning.   Every situation you'll encounter throughout your engagement can be examined through the lens of simplicity and potentially scaled back or streamlined in some way that will make your life easier, more affordable, more relaxing, and overall, more enjoyable.   Often we find ourselves in the midst of a planning roadblock and the first instinct is to explore your options.  In the first example we're going to talk about today - a couple who has family in 2 different places, many of whom don't want to travel, you might consider … getting married in each place, what would that look like?  Getting married where we live?  Getting married on an island with just us?  In all the feelings and family dynamics and charged emotions that fly around throughout your engagement season, it's sometimes easy to get lost in a million far-fetched options ... when the simplest, most streamlined option is left by the wayside.   On that note, today we're going to explore some common wedding planning scenarios where things can escalate and become verrrrrrrrrry complicated, very quickly.  I'm going to do my best to point out some straightforward, simple solutions that I hope will make your engaged life EASIER, MORE AFFORDABLE, and put a stop to waking up in the middle of the night with your mind racing over how many passed appetizers there should be, how many people should be in your wedding party, and how much ice to buy for your welcome party.  Ready to get started?  Tune into the full show for so much more! This week, I have an inbox full of your wedding flower questions to share!  I also put together a list of the top wedding flower mistakes that I see couples make, to further help guide you to "DIY wedding flower SUCCESS". Today we're reviewing: How much should 5 relatively simple bouquets cost?  I'm being quoted over $1200, which feels so ridiculous. Visiting a flower farm to pick stems w/ my bridal party - how early should we pick & arrange them so that they are still fresh? How much time should we allocate to making the bouquets & centerpieces in the day or two before the wedding?   Downsides to ordering flowers online?  Considering Costco but the prices seem too good to be true We definitely want to do flower bouquets for me & bridesmaid and a simple flower on the guys' jacket, but do you have any ideas for creative centerpieces that are more affordable than flowers? Bac Giang, is a picturesque place that often remains under the radar until the Lychee Festival, typically featured in social pages and news around June. This lively event commemorates Bac Giang's distinction as the "Land of Lychees."In today's episode Bac Giang and the subject of lychees are front and centre, as I get to share the story of a photographer named Jessie Pearlman, a previous guest on the podcast, who embarked on a return trip to Vietnam, driven by his love for the country and his desire to reconnect with friends and explore new experiences. This show delves into the motivations behind his journey; the significance of the lychees to the region and the community, and how best to navigate a visit there. Jesse has a wonderful gift for self-expression and description which will immediately transport you to the experiences he had during his time in the heart of Bac Giang province, Luc Ngan, the township designated as the biggest growing township for lychees. He provides valuable tips on organizing your trip and strongly recommends it as a destination to visit, just a short 2.5-hour drive from Hanoi, especially for photographers and tropical fruit enthusiasts. This is an off the beaten track location and experience, so information is as Jesse describes, hard to find. If you're planning a holiday in Vietnam and have a penchant for motorbike rides and scenic routes, your quest will inevitably lead you to the iconic Hải Vân Pass (Đèo Hải Vân).The Hải Vân Pass is more than just a road; it's a legendary motorbike route nestled in the heart of central Vietnam. In 2008, it garnered global recognition as the BBC and the Top Gear crew ventured through its winding trails, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for motorbike enthusiasts and adventure seekers. But what sets the Hải Vân Pass apart is not just its breathtaking landscapes. It holds a pivotal place in history as a crucial route during the Vietnam War, bridging the north and south of the country. Today, it stands as a symbol of Vietnam's resilience and progress. To uncover the hidden gems of the Hải Vân Pass, I had the privilege of speaking with Chris Moonie,  a seasoned media professional, and traveller, with over eight years of living in Vietnam and multiple explorations of the Hải Vân Pass, Chris's first-hand experiences and deep understanding of the region make him an invaluable source of information for anyone contemplating a journey along this iconic route.Together we unpack all the ways to explore this route, and all the hidden gems along the way. Travelling by bike is not the only way to do this route.Chris's own odyssey in Vietnam began in 2013, when he ventured to Hoi An with his son. He was instantly captivated by the country, its people, and the irresistible charm of Hoi An. A chance encounter with a special lady during his visit further cemented his decision to relocate to Hoi An. Since then, he has been a resident of An Bang, a once-sleepy village that has transformed into a bustling tourist destination only 10 mins out of Hoi An.The Hải Vân Pass, no doubt, is a paradise for Instagram enthusiasts, but what sets it apart is the array of unique stops along the way. From oyster farms to the Dream Springs, this motorbike excursion offers more than just scenic beauty. But we will let you decide after listening.Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, leave us a review, and share it with your fellow adventurers. You can reach Chris directly here  https://www.facebook.com/chrisminvietnamWatch Chris's Video here - https://www.facebook.com/chrisminvietnam/videos/866528168426706/Thank you for joining us on this exciting episode, and until next time, may your travelFind out what's possible in the best dental and cosmetic procedures through our partnership with Worldwide Hospital in Vietnam.Get in touch with us to arrange a free private consultation or comparison quotation.Thank you for listening. In this podcast episode, I have the opportunity to introduce you to Vicki Thai, a Health Care Sales professional living in Utah, USA, with Vietnamese heritage. Vicki's family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when she was four years old, and during her growing up, she had never given much thought to her Vietnamese background. However, a moment of vulnerability in her mother's health led her to realize the importance of experiencing her heritage. She decided to plan a trip to Vietnam with her mother and reached out to the "What About Vietnam" podcast for assistance. As I knew the background to the tour, I took great pleasure in planning this trip for Vicki and her mum, which included visits to Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat. These locations held special significance for Vicki and her mother, allowing them to explore their roots and connect with their heritage. Unexpectedly, the trip evoked strong emotions and a newfound appreciation for their Vietnamese identity.During their stay in Vietnam, Vicki and her mother engaged with the local people, immersed themselves in the country's culture, and marveled at the landscapes. This experience transformed Vicki's perception of her birthplace, instilling a deep sense of pride in her heritage. She also praises the warmth and thoughtfulness of the Vietnamese people, particularly their tour guides, and one in particular in Saigon, Ms Thuy. The episode highlights Vicki's journey through Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat, showcasing her awe and discovery of these places. I think for those who don't live in their country of birth, you will relate to Vicki's story. Despite the trip going mostly smoothly, there was a minor glitch, illustrating that while many aspects can be controlled, some factors remain unpredictable. From the bustling vibrant city of Saigon, Vicki takes us by the hand as she describes her love of the bustling city of Saigon, to her awe and disbelief cruising through the Mekong Delta and then to discovering through the forests, the city of Dalat. A city she totally didn't expect, while being her mothers' birth city.At a deeper level this episode offers insight into the transformative power of heritage exploration and the deep connections it can foster. Time stamps:02-00-  History and background to Vicki's reason to visit Vietnam27.00 - Saigon 30.00 - Tour Guide review of guides in general - starting with Saigon35.06 - Happy Birthday Vicki36.06 - Mekong Delta40.29 - Dalat Find out what's possible in the best dental and cosmetic procedures through our partnership with Worldwide Hospital in Vietnam.Get in touch with us to arrange a free private consultation or comparison quotation.Thank you for listening. I'm thrilled to have such an engaging conversation with our guest today about the digital nomad lifestyle. Whether you're a seasoned nomad or just curious about this exciting way of life, this episode is a must-listen!I am fortunate to be joined with Florian Rucker who inspires nomads by providing a unique, friendly, and well fit out co working space in Hoi An called The Hub, to perform this kind of work. If you can imagine having high speed internet, in a glass workspace, in the middle of rice paddy fields, you have it right there! We get down to “tin tacks” as we talk through the evolving landscape of digital nomading and the transformation since Covid. No longer is it just for the youthful adventure seekers, employers are now funding some people to work this way, as they now recognise working remotely doesn't have to impact output given the right set up.Hoi An and the The Hub provide workers a unique experience in Vietnam and now that the E-Visa stays are being extended to 90 days this looks like being a very viable option for more people.Flo is uniquely qualified to speak to this topic having lived abroad since he was 16. Originally a Berliner, he has a Cambridge education, and has lived in 7 other countries throughout his life. With a background in Development Aid and a IT Agency owner he fell in love with Hoi An after being a customer of the The Hub back in 2017. He bought the space in early 2021 and rebuilt it nearby, in the middle of the rice fields in ‘22/'23. Every morning that you wake up, you get to experience an incredible new view,” said Katy Perry “I love that I get to christen her with my good vibrations, and I'm so excited for this new, beautiful, high-end, high-tech ship to take the seas, and provide once-in-a-lifetime vacations for so many families.”Launching August 2022, Norwegian Prima will offer inaugural voyages to Northern Europe from Southampton, England; Amsterdam; and Reykjavík, Iceland beginning 12 August.; Bermuda sailings from New York City beginning 6 October. and Caribbean itineraries from Galveston, Texas and Miami beginning 27 October.  To commemorate this exciting partnership and celebrating other entertainment headliners that will be featured on Norwegian Prima, NCL has put together a celebratory Spotify playlist.MSC Grandiosa now dedicated to the Norwegian Fjords for Summer 2022MSC Cruises' has announced that MSC Grandiosa will now be fully dedicated to the Norwegian Fjords for the entire Northern Hemisphere summer 2022 season. Of the eight new Viking Longships®, four ships – Viking Fjorgyn, Viking Kari, Viking Radgrid and Viking Skaga – are built specifically to navigate the Seine River and bring guests to the heart of Paris with an exclusive docking location at Port de Grenelle, just a short walk from the Eiffel Tower. The four additional ships – Viking Egdir, Viking Gersemi, Viking Gymir and Viking Hervor – will sail Viking's popular itineraries on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. The naming of the new river ships comes as Viking continues its 25th anniversary and a year of multiple milestones. In January 2022, the company launched Viking Expeditions and its first Polar Class vessel, the Viking Octantis®. By the end of the year, Viking will have also welcomed a second identical expedition ship, as well as two new identical ocean ships, new purpose-built vessels for the Nile and Mekong rivers and new Mississippi River voyages.Viking Naming CeremonyIn keeping with maritime tradition that dates back thousands of years, Viking invited eight distinguished cultural partners and important members of the company's extended family to serve as ceremonial godmothers of the new ships. The honored godmothers include:Alma Deutscher, Godmother of Viking Gymir – A musical phenomenon, Alma captivates the classical world with her talents as a violinist, pianist, composer and conductor, and at just 17 years old was hailed as the “new Mozart” at an early age. She recently appeared on an episode of Viking's award-winning enrichment channel, Viking.TV (Anne Diamond Welcomes Back Composer and Musician Alma Deutscher), where she discussed her upcoming concert series, which will be exclusive for Viking guests on select river voyages visiting Vienna.Helen Deutscher, Godmother of Viking Egdir – A violinist, pianist and vocalist, Helen is an accomplished musician who honed her musical and performance skills at the Music Gymnasium in Vienna and as a member of the Vienna State Opera's children's chorus; she has also performed in several productions of her sister Miss Alma Deutscher's opera, Cinderella. Helen and Alma recently appeared together on an episode of Viking.TV (Anne Diamond Interviews Classical Musicians, Alma & Helen Deutscher) where they discussed their remarkable lives and many musical milestones.Dr. Janie Deutscher, Godmother of Viking Radgrid – An author and educator, Dr. Deutscher is also an accomplished musician and earned an organ scholarship to Oxford University where she later taught medieval literature; in recent years, she has concentrated on homeschooling and supporting the musical ambitions of her two daughters, Alma and Helen, godmothers of Viking Gymir and Viking Egdir, respectfully.Brenda Hunsberger, Godmother of Viking Hervor – For more than four decades, Ms. Hunsberger, Senior Vice President of Travel Services with AAA Club Alliance, has worked in the industry as an accomplished travel agent; she believes in the power of travel to transform perspectives and change lives.Karryn Christopher, Godmother of Viking Gersemi – Ms. Christopher is Executive Vice President of Preferred Partnerships & Marketing for Signature Travel Network, a member-owned travel cooperative established in 1956, where she has led the transformation of the company's sales and marketing division.Ghislaine Wood, Godmother of Viking Fjorgyn – As the Deputy Director of the University of East Anglia's Sainsbury Centre, one of the most important public university art galleries in Great Britain, Ms. Wood carefully curates exhibitions, including the upcoming “Visions of Ancient Egypt,” which was developed in partnership with Viking; opening in September 2022, the exhibit will honor the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb. Ms. Wood discussed her work at the Sainsbury Centre in a recent episode of Viking.TV (Explore Alaskan Objects at the Sainsbury Centre with Ghislaine Wood), including the origins of their Alaska collection which examines how indigenous Alaskan communities developed technologies and tools to adapt to their environment.Muriel Wilson, Godmother of Viking Skaga – As the Director of Event Strategy & Sponsorships for Virtuoso, Ltd., Ms. Wilson has been a distinguished staff member of the global network of agencies for more than 40 years and leverages her deep knowledge of the industry to develop quality hospitality and travel experiences for Virtuoso's travel advisors and preferred partners.Kari Garmann, Godmother of Viking Kari – Former member of The Parliament of Norway and Oslo City Council, Ms. Garmann has made valuable contributions to Norway in the areas of government, business and banking throughout her career. The naming event was executed by connecting the new ships via satellite across two European cities: Paris and Amsterdam. The Viking Fjorgyn, Viking Kari, Viking Radgrid and Viking Skaga were docked in Paris at the Port de Grenelle, where they were named by their godmothers. The other four ships – Viking Egdir, Viking Gersemi, Viking Gymir and Viking Hervor – were docked in Amsterdam and named by their godmothers, who also joined the celebration in Paris. If you dream it should it not be attainable? We will find a way to make it happen for you.  This led me to Coastline Travel a Virtuoso travel agency. Memories of what we have done, time spent with people.  Memories!  I believe that you have to plan for the memories before it is too late.  Everyone needs to be more intentional with the time they have and their travel.  You need to take that bucket list out of the bottom drawer and put it on the calendar.  When planning your time, look at who will be there with you.  What are their interests?  Create memories for them also. With 39 years in the travel industry, I have done just about every kind of travel there is.  My last position was the personal travel advisor to the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.  I curated not only his, the top executive but his family's travel.  Before he retired, he asked me to continue working with him and his family, launching Medelberg's Travel Services.  My specialty utilizes my executive travel background is creating one of a kind travel experiences for my clients. Janice Jarrett, Owner/Teacher/Musician Vocal Technique StudioP.O. On the last Wednesday of every month, Christy & Michelle answer listener questions live on the show - YAWA! This month we're answering questions about: Sending thank you notes early. Floor Plans & flow of events. Starting over with wedding plans cause things are getting too complicated. Saying no to parents about an after-party. FMIL wants a separate wedding weekend party just for her side of the family. How much to tip a wedding planner and more! Question #1: Thank you notes & Event Flow 1. We have already received wedding gifts from a few eager friends and family members. Our wedding is in late June. Should we send out our "thank you" notes now, or wait until after the wedding? It seems like a long time between now and June to not thank them for the gift. 2. We are struggling with our wedding floor plan/flow of events. We are getting married at a hotel and everything will be outside. We will have the ceremony on one lawn, and the dinner/reception on another lawn. For cocktail hour, we are considering adding a third location. Luckily, the hotel is somewhat small and guests won't be walking far to each location. Do you think three separate spaces is too much? Should we combine the cocktail hour and dinner/reception to be in the same space even though it will be kind of akward, or add a third location? Answer to #1: Thank you notes & flow of events 1. Send the thank you's now! No reason to wait, and if you have the time now, it will be nice for the givers to hear from you. It is also helpful to have a running list of who you have sent a thank you note too on your Guest List spreadsheet. 2. Incorporating a third location if possible is the best choice. People like to explore and be moved throughout a wedding day. It adds to the overall experience of the event. And it helps logistically as well. The reception area set-up timing can be more spread out, allowing your planner to spend more time focusing on each area. Logistically, make sure you have the right amount of time for people to move into each new space. And always have music! No one should enter in to a quiet area. This might require your DJ or musicians to bring a 3rd sound sytsem. Question #2: Though the wedding is not for another year, budgets are a bit more of a concern than pre- covid. They had a wedding planned a bit out of town, with shuttles, a live band, etc, but wonder if they should just cancel those plans and move the ceremony into town. Answer to #2: This is a good example of the kind of compromises and decisions you and your partner will have to make together in the wedding, and throughout your marrried life together. It's not always easy. Losing a job, and potentially taking on debt are big factors that can affect you down the road and cause undue stress. There is no price tag you can put on peace of mind. If dropping this venue will save you stress, anxiety, debts, regret, etc. for the next year, then it is worth it. Remember, the wedding is only the beginning. Celebrate in a way that you can feel good about. You can have a dance party anywhere! Question #3: Her fiance's parents want to have an after party and she does not want that. They are having a brunch wedding. The fiancé's dad wants to have a party after the brunch, and the couple does not feel totally comfortable with that. She is wondering how to communicate this, and help him see their point of view. They do want to have a bigger party, reception in another year when hopefully the pandemic is ove, it feels safer, and they can gather without masks. Answer to #3: The bottom line is that you are not comfortable with it. It is hard to do this, the intentions from mom and dad are good. However, it is important for you, and your fiancé, to put your foot down. Do not put yourself in a position where you are trying to convince them. Say something like “I am not here to give you my reasoning nor try to convince you to change your mind. I am just letting you know, we're not doing it.” Or, “We are having the wedding brunch and that is it.” *Question #4: *Competing Get-Togethers for the wedding weekend The couple asked the groom's parents if they could use their backyard to host welcome drinks the night before the wedding, thinking it would not be a big ask considering they had previously hosted a whole rehearsal for his brother's wedding. The parents came back saying they don't want to use the backyard because they wanted to host "their-side of the family only" for a separate party that same night. Ultimately, it's fine with them if the parents don't want them to use the backyard, however they are not okay with the fact that they are planning an party that exclude's the bride's family the night before the wedding. They had hoped for something that combined the two families, so people could get to know each other and have a nice evening. The groom is handling all direct communication with his parents and has reiterated that everyone should be together. The couple is on the same page of wanting to hang out with all their guests, and ask what they should do and how to handle this situation. Answer to #4: Yes, this is sticky. Honestly, his mom sounds a littttttle bit like Christy's mom. She loves to host, but is very particular about who she is hosting, and when things don't go according to her plan, she never forgets it, digs in and stiff arms her way to something that SHE wants even if it's not convenient, polite, or something everyone else agrees is a good idea. You guys are already doing what we would have suggested, so good on you! We think the only thing left to do is go in stronger, one more time, and with a backup plan if you don't get her to change the plans or relent. Your fiancé needs to sit down with his parents -You should be there too, but he can set it up - and insist that this party directly conflicts with your plans for the night before your wedding. The rehearsal brings two families together so that they can get to know each other before the big day - a day that involves 2 humans committing to become a new family together! 2! That's 2 individuals with 2 different families and everyone is there to celebrate the same thing, in theory. So you both need to be honest with his parents that this is just not going to work. The night before the wedding and the wedding day will be mixed affairs. Families will mingle. People can make their own plans around your two events, of course, but there should not be 2 events you will be present at and then another event that only his side of the family is invited to AND that directly conflicts with your rehearsal dinner/drinks plan. See if they will reconsider the day-after event, or maybe even his side of the family hanging out before they all get to the rehearsal. Frame it so they open their mind to the idea that this weekend is an opportunity to get to know new people. Not just cluster up with 'your own'. You have to be ready to make your own decision if they don't budge. In that case, you just embrace a plan. Rehearsal. Small rehearsal dinner. Welcome drinks at a bar. Wedding the next day. Their plans will not be something you deal with at all. We have a feeling the welcome drinks will end up being family that pop in (and maybe go to his parents house after...or plan to and then don't!), and all of your friends coming in from out of town. Plus your family. And that's fine! The wedding weekend doesn't have to be everyone hanging out as a big group the entire time. Know and trust that people will come to the events you invite them to because they love you and they want to hang out with you and be social. His mom might have some social anxiety or is just stubborn. You can't control what other people do - but make your plans. Send out the invitations and then plan on having a wonderful time. It's a bummer that his parents are acting like this - but don't let it become more than it needs to be. Have one last firm discussion with them and then decide you two are going to have an awesome weekend regardless. We believe in you! Question #5: How much should we tip our planner? What is a good tip for a wedding planner? It seems like the advice out there is up to $500. Wasn't sure why it was capped at $500 but was wondering if there are exceptions to giving more than $500. Are there times when you give a percentage of the wedding planning fee and it goes over $500? Answer to #5 (by Christy): Can I ask you what the wedding planner's fee is, total? And does that include 10 hours on the wedding day? Is she doing a great job for you thus far? A $400-500 tip is probably most typical, and that would be for month-of coordination, when the fee is approx. $3000. I have gotten more and less, and sometimes, no tip at all. All tips are appreciated! If I have an assistant on the day of and the couple doesn't also tip her a little bit directly, I will give her around 50-100 from the tip I get, so that's another thing to keep in mind. When I have gotten more than $500- it is either because the couple is very well off, or because my fee was higher, and they were basing tips on a 15-20% rate. End of January they have published a circular, adding just a single significant sentence to the VAT application decree, which raises many questions. We are so happy to have had Mr. David Tutera as our guest this week. With 35 years, planning events, David is sharing a plethora of valuable tips and fun stories. Not only is this a great interview, but 5 lucky listeners, planning their own weddings were able to ask David their own questions. So much amazingness happening on this one! David Tutera, entertaining expert, event designer, motivational speaker, TV personality, fashion designer, lifestyle brand and author, is hailed as an artistic visionary whose ability, uniquely creative talents and passion for designing has made him a tremendous success in the event and lifestyle arena. David's specialty is creating one of a kind celebrations that truly represent the honoree(s). The David Tutera brand is so much more than just a single person. The brand has product lines in fashion, crafting, jewelry, candles, invitations and has expanded to a global Mentorship Program. David has also been written into novels, commercials, scripted TV shows, and movies as a pop culture icon. David whole heartily believes that every voice is worthy of being heard. We all must lead with positivity, and be there for one another. The greatness in life is the ability to be fully present. Look around and make sure others are protected. If we can each make one person smile a day...together we can change the world. Big Takeaways When it comes to relating to your clients, as a planner, it makes sense that you can get caught up in all the details. A lot of planners can get disconnected from their clients in this process. It is so important to invest your heart and mind into what the couple is looking for. David believes that he has really been given a unique opportunity to create a special moment and experience that will be remembered on a totally different level than any one element of the wedding. A good planner emotes all of this, and shows that they are there for them. It is so important to LOVE your planner. This relationship is monumental to the process of planning. Some days will be hard, but knowing that your planner loves and cares deeply is crucial. When it comes to the way things have changed over time, there are still a lot of strongholds on hold traditions and ways of being. Openness to what is real, and meaningful to the couple, and to the planner are so much more important to fitting into the image of what a perfect wedding is. David has found the vows to be one of the most important things you want to hear. The nervousness is natural, but you can never do that again. He really encourages breaking through that. Only look at what you can afford to do. You don't need to go into debt to plan a wedding. David's top priorities with the budget: 1. Food 2. Music 3. Visuals It's about not spending money you don't have! Work within your own reality. A perfectly awesome wedding can be created with your budget. The wedding is about the couple! The David Tutera Experience is for Event Business Professionals and Entrepreneurs. It is three days of education and events that will connect, enlighten, and ignite success for all to celebrate. Live Zoom Audence Questions For David: Emily: What would you suggest to incorporate Disney into our wedding without making it too obvious? David's Answer: You have to have the magic, down to the sparkles and the feelings. Colors are significantly important. Red and black can look a little Halloween-y or goth-y. Adding a little sparkle into the bouquets can really make it all pop out. Grays with your chosen black will look really great. You don't want the decor to be too dark. Lindsey: Do you have any tips, stories, or advice for incorporating local artists and entertainers into your wedding? David's Answer: Think about bringing in artists that could bring in art that would be installed around the space. Almost like a gallery exhibition. You can take a well-known or existing piece of art and ask the florist to re-create the pieces with flowers. See if the artist will do an exhibition for you at your wedding. Aubrey: How can I make the experience personal and fun for all our guests in a slightly larger wedding (~185 guests)? David's Answer: No matter the guest count, the most important thing is that you and your partner are always side by side. Mingle with family and friends together. Make sure you are showing yourself as a couple, and find that flow together. Connect your guests to each other in the way a good host would do. Margo: How can you add some personality into the design of the wedding elegantly without being too literal? David's Answer: Find things you both love and think about how to add that into the design. For instance, you love art, reflect that in the table placements. He loves food, let him create unique and fun choices for the meals. And that can begin to tell the story of the two of you together at the same table. Megan: What do you want the bride and groom to consider during the wedding planning process to avoid burn out? What is the most important thing to focus on? David's Answer: Remain focused on each other. Make sure the conversations you are having with your planner are communicated. Don't make swift changes on your own. Consider each other constantly. Do not plan your wedding EVERY SINGLE DAY. Allow room to breathe and rest. Allow time for it not to be priority. Get excited again. It's very much about mindset! With a good planner that you have a great relationship with, hopefully the week or two prior should allow you live you life without planning the wedding. You should be able to relax and act as if you were not in the middle of the process. Then when the wedding happens, it feels like a dream. Day-of coordination is not helpful! This will create more drama and waste energy. If you cannot afford a planner, try to have a month-of coordinator. It will save you so much stress. You might fall in love, so be ready to spend the money when you go in. Be honest with yourself. Understand what environment will make the best experience for you. Do the research about budget, size range, etc. Check out the website of each store. Call the store. Great service at a bridal salon should absolutely include preparation, listening, and transparency. When it comes to dress sizes, the salon is buying sizes in the most common sizes (8-16) for trying on. They are not trying to discriminate. This is yet another reason why shopping somewhere with caring, knowledgable staff is important. They can and want to work with you to make an incredible experience. Make sure that alterations are part of your budget and planning time. If you have particular gowns made by a designer you want to try on, call and see if the store can get them in for you to try on. The more people you bring, the less the shopping experience is about you. Bring the people that you love and know will give you the best advice. Toxicity doesn't disappear just because you are getting married. Maya says 4 is the ABSOLUTE max, but ultimately believes a bride should go by herself in the first meeting/try-on. Extend yourself and others grace. Be flexible with your ultimate goal in mind. #237 Wedding Dress Shopping Do's and Don'ts

The Big Wedding Planning Podcast

You have been asking for an episode like this for a while and we finally did it! This is EVERYTHING you need to know when going wedding dress shopping. Who to bring, who NOT to bring. How to choose a boutique. What to expect from a sales person at the boutique and and how everyone's experience is deeply personal and unique. Our guest Maya Holihan has been a wedding dress expert since 2004. Maya Holihan has spent nearly the entirety of her 25-year career in the luxury goods industry, which began with Gianni Versace and then Vera Wang, before purchasing her first bridal shop in 2004. Prior to founding EWedded (https://ewedded.com/) she was the proprietor of multiple bridal businesses. She's the author of a new book for brides-to-be titled Happily Altered After and hosts a podcast with the same name and converses with industry experts about wedding trends and the nuances of the planning process. Big Takeaways * Don't try on dresses until you are ready to buy a dress! You might fall in love, so be ready to spend the money when you go in. * Be honest with yourself. Understand what environment will make the best experience for you. Do the research about budget, size range, etc. Check out the website of each store. Call the store. * Great service at a bridal salon should absolutely include preparation, listening, and transparency. * When it comes to dress sizes, the salon is buying sizes in the most common sizes (8-16) for trying on. They are not trying to discriminate. This is yet another reason why shopping somewhere with caring, knowledgable staff is important. They can and want to work with you to make an incredible experience. Make sure that alterations are part of your budget and planning time. * If you have particular gowns made by a designer you want to try on, call and see if the store can get them in for you to try on. * The more people you bring, the less the shopping experience is about you. Bring the people that you love and know will give you the best advice. Toxicity doesn't disappear just because you are getting married. Maya says 4 is the ABSOLUTE max, but ultimately believes a bride should go by herself in the first meeting/try-on. * Extend yourself and others grace. Be flexible with your ultimate goal in mind. Jaz and Rodney are back! They originally joined us to talk about "Wedding Planning While Black in Episode #204 (https://www.thebigweddingplanningpodcast.com/episodes/auomwzz90s4j5gshgevs66wa9ek65j) and today they share the retrospective of their magical wedding that took place in October 2020. After a constantly changing and shifting planning process, they finally wed in Palm Springs with their family. Making a much smaller and much more intimate day for celebrating and as you will hear, it was magical! Big Takeaways - The planner was an ABSOLUTE must-have. Having them their helped everything feel so much smoother and relaxing. - When it came to planning, they prioritized what was most important for them. In the end, with just their family present, they were able to use their full budget to make an even more fabulous day. - Speak up! Try it. It might not work every time, but it is worth it. It's better to know if it's time to step away from a vendor than to drag it out because of fear to speak up. - Making sure people feel comfortable makes all the difference. #235 Weddings Designed With Connection in Mind

What if your wedding was designed using a holistic approach focused on people and not things? How could you make sure that everyone at your wedding will feel like their presence is an integral part of the celebration? Listen in as Michelle interview's Experiential Designer, Julie Comfort, and learn how to do all this and more. As a destination wedding photographer for ten years, Julie Comfort attended over 250 weddings in 15 countries across 5 continents, covering a staggering number of cultures, traditions, and venues, yet often feeling a huge missed potential for more personalization and connection. Ready for a new adventure, she moved to Berlin in 2015 and studied experience design at Kaospilot, where she immediately recognized that a holistic design approach focused on people not things was the missing ingredient for truly meaningful and magical weddings. Julie founded Comfort Studio, an experience design consultancy dedicated to designing celebrations with intention, heart, and wild creativity. Julie designs weddings that elicit the desired emotion in your guests. Joy, happiness, peace, etc. This helps create weddings that are an entire experience. Big Takeaways * Think about how you want people to feel. Start with how you DON'T want them to feel and work from there. * If you don't want your guests to feel awkward at a table of strangers, have a table host for each table! Someone assigned to welcome people to the table, pour wine, make introductions, etc. Think of which of your friends, at each table, that would be great at doing this and reach out to them before hand. Tell them why you chose them. * People love to help in small and big ways. Having come from the world from destination weddings, Julie really recommends including the guests in meaningful ways. When they just feel like an audience, the wedding is less of an experience and more of a show, they won't feel as important to the big day. * In the future, it will be even more important to design around the people, and less on the spectacle of the big day. Think about a dinner party and how people are engaged. Connection is key. Links We Referenced comfortstudio.com (https://www.comfortstudio.com/) - Use code: BIGWEDDING for a 20% discount 15toasts.com (http://15toasts.com/) instagram.com/comfortstudioberlin Quotes “Connection doesn't happen automatically, you have to help people connect.” - Julie “One of the weird paradoxes about weddings is that the couple, that's getting married, they're both the hosts of the event and the guest of honor.” - Julie "I think it's really important that we don't just treat our guests like an audience. [...] How can we insure that everyone there feels like their presence is integral to what is happening?” - Julie “It's okay to have moments where nothing much is happening.[...] Then what happens after the boring moment will feel more exciting.” - Julie The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is... * Hosted and produced by Christy Matthews and Michelle Martinez. * Edited by Veronica Gruba. * Music by Steph Altman of Mophonics. * On Instagram @thebigweddingplanningpodcast and be sure to use #planthatwedding when posting, so you can get our attention! * Inviting you to become part of our Facebook Group! On the last Wednesday of every month, we answer wedding planning questions from our listeners. These are always chock full of information that EVERYONE can benefit from. We have so much fun and we love our listeners for reaching out and interacting with us! ANNOUNCEMENT! We are getting ready to release The Big Wedding Planning Master Class (https://www.thebigweddingplanningpodcast.com/home-masterclass) very soon. For more info or to be among the first to know, please sign up here (https://www.thebigweddingplanningpodcast.com/home-masterclass). Question #1 (Voicemail) How can I involve my fiancé's family, that lives in Texas, in the wedding planning and events? Answer #1 We are big fans of the video chat. Especially in the pandemic, it is an increasingly common way to bring the person along with you. Don't overthink it. You can always pick up the phone and call, the small gestures like that really make a difference. You do not need to involve them in everything. But there are special moments and choices you can include them in. If you want them to participate in the ceremony, you can have one of the read something. They can share generations old wedding photos etc. Question #2 My fiancé and I live in NYC and are getting married in South Florida in the end of February 2022. We are planning on a smaller wedding of between 75-85 people. I am a planner by nature and we have already hired all of our major vendors (venue, caterer, photographer, florist/ designer, videographer, DJ, photo booth). When is the appropriate time to either reach out to my designer (or any vendor for that matter) or expect her to reach out to me to discuss design ideas or changes? Would it be too much to ask her to do a walk through of the venue with us or meet with me at her showroom if we are down there in May, which is still 10 months out from our wedding? Answer #2 If you don't have a Pinterest profile already, get that going. Create a board that is just for final ideas and let that be something that you change over time. Perhaps keep a log or journal, either handwritten or in the notes app on your phone where you input your ideas and/or revisions. I would say that finalizing the design with your florist can come in the last 45 days of the wedding. That's a pretty safe time to start back up that conversation (provided there aren't any huge props that she needs to build for you or purchase that might be on back order). Also, shoot her an email and ask her what her timeline is for finalizing design details. Ask her when she will want to start knowing about that. Explain to her, just as you did to me, that you don't want to inundate her with all the thoughts and details that are running through your head, but that you want to be ready when she is. I'm sure she will appreciate that. Question #3 is not a question, but our listener Sarah wanted to share that she has grown to love her wedding dress more and more. Even though she did not cry or get emotional on the day she bought it. Question #4 We plan to get married in October 2022. I'm trying to figure out what I want and can afford first. And we're going to start looking at venues this month. I'm not a huge fan of traditional weddings, or the traditions that go along with them, but I'm concerned about ruffling feathers by not having a bridal party. I have a few people who I don't want to choose between for MOH and I don't want my future sister-in-law in my wedding and I know if I had a bridal party and excluded her I'd have lots of blowback. Also none of the guys that my fiancé would want as groomsmen would be able to afford the tux rentals so we'd have to foot that bill. I think by foregoing the bridal party entirely all of us will save money and hurt feelings, especially because we still intend to have these people be involved throughout the wedding in other ways and with the Bridal shower and bachelor/bachelorette parties. Does this seem reasonable? The first time I saw a wedding without a bridal party I couldn't get it out of my head, it made too much sense to me. Also because I want to skip the bridal party I don't see the need to have an elaborate rehearsal dinner. Both of our families are not well off, but I feel like my MIL believes in the traditional wedding cost breakdown because shortly after our engagement she mentioned the rehearsal dinner would be covered by them. I'd much prefer she handle some other cost because our rehearsal is just going to be our parents, us, the officiant, and maybe 1-2 others (haven't decided if I want a flower man or whatever). I need help here. Answer #4 Don't have a wedding party if you don't want one. It is your wedding and your reasons are solid! Your guiding light for your wedding should be, “what do we want, in terms of celebrating our marriage?” You're going to ruffle feathers either way. Budgets run the gamut. Talk to your partner, and check in. Don't drop hints. Just have a discussion and between the two of you, say to your future MIL that you are working the budget for the wedding and express the curiosity if they are planning to contribute more, no pressure on her. Money is difficult to talk about. Go in with tenderness. Chaya and Morgan join today to talk about how the ‘biggest, queerest wedding of the year' surprised even the two brides. Theirs was a 2020, wedding that happened during the Pandemic which as you can guess turned into something totally different than what was planned. Like way different! Like 10,0000 people watching the live stream on Facebook, kind of different! Despite initially thinking they wanted a small, intimate backyard wedding, they were still struck by the effects of COVID, requiring them to rethink the whole day. Chaya and Morgan live streamed their wedding to over 10k people. Using the internet's wide resources of queer, BIPOC, they were able to pull off a beautiful day. The New York Times wrote an article about their wedding and describe's Chaya's career as follows: "Ms. Milchtein, 25, has an eclectic career as a style influencer, writer and automotive educator. Her website and blog is called Mechanic Shop Femme, where she also writes about plus-size fashion.” Chaya also teaches online classes for car maintenance, how to buy - best way to insure - how to not get scammed. She's an automotive educator, writer and speaker - with an empowerment platform. Big Takeaways * If you are doing a live stream (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch, etc) of any kind, make sure you get the rights to use the music, or they will cut off your feed! * Make sure there is proper wifi in the exact location you are. Test it as far in advance as you can! * You can choose which parts of your wedding are important to you! Wear what you want to wear, do what brings you joy. Wedding Planning Podcast | Your Online Wedding Planner | Free Advice from Engagement to Wedding Day from Kara Lamerato of KVW

Today let’s sort out some misconceptions and frequently asked questions about wedding planners and day of coordinators. Our goal is to get really clear on the difference between a wedding planner and a day-of coordinator, and to determine whether or not you really need to hire a professional to help you with your wedding plans. When I got married, I thought you had to have a wedding planner.  I laugh looking back, because in my mind it was wedding law that to plan anything, you HAD to have a wedding planner.  Like, I couldn’t even pick up the phone and call caterers for information and quotes, because you had to have your wedding planner do that.  So silly.  Things have come a long way, LOL!  And not only silly, but a professional planner was completely out of our budget, and, as it turns out, totally unnecessary.  I wasted a lot of time researching and interviewing planners before I realized that A.) I didn’t HAVE to hire anyone, and B.) John and I had all the tools we needed to plan OUR perfect wedding day. And side note, shocker - obviously, none of the wedding planners I interviewed ever mentioned to me, hey by the way, did you know that you could actually just do this on your own?  Thankfully I came around to that, but it took lots of wasted effort and stress to get there. So I will tell you - hey by the way, did you know that you could actually just do this on your own? Flash forward to today - I literally created the Wedding Planning Podcast so that any engaged couple could tune in and use the episodes and the tools we review in the weekly shows to plan their own wedding - no professional or pricey wedding planner required.  So spoiler alert before we even dive in - I definitely DO NOT think you have to spend thousands of dollars to hire a professional wedding planner!  Some alternatives?  Try checking out the sites we mentioned in today's show, including your local Craigslist postings, taskrabbit.com and fiverr.com I also know that there are countless wonderful wedding planning professionals out there, and for some couples it’s a really smart investment … and we’ll get into all of that that much more in today’s show.
