Nobody seems to know exactly how Terence Crawford vs Viktor Postol will turn out, but a high level fight that is 50-50 on paper is what boxing needs more of. That the fight is a unification bout could even be incidental, but both Crawford and Postol hold separate belts nonetheless. Though there seems to be less and less incentive to actually unify titles as time goes by, many of boxing's memorable battles have been unification matches. Felix Trinidad vs Oscar de la Hoya, Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns I and II, Bernard Hopkins vs Felix Trinidad and Oscar de la Hoya, Erik Morales vs Marco Antonio Barrera I, Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo, Brian Viloria vs Tyson Marquez... (Photo of Adrien Broner and Khabib Allakhverdiev by Stephanie Trapp/Showtime. Photo of Lucas Matthysse and Viktor Postol by Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. We spoke with him by Skype Tuesday Japan time (Monday New York time). John Perretti's fighting career mainly focused on kickboxing, where he took "a lot of damage," and also included competition in karate and taekwondo, as well as rigorous training in grappling, judo, and wrestling, he said. This resulted in "16 verifiable concussions" and a few more "accidental" ones along the way. After he had retired as an active fighter but still was training and coaching, at about the age of 40 he started having cognitive problems. He illustrated what this meant for him: "For myself, that was the real beginning of not knowing where I was, even though I was probably 50-60 feet down a driveway in the Hampton Bays, and getting lost, I mean physically lost, and having to pull the car over and not know where I was for an hour or two." As time went on, he said, having scar tissue on the brain and other brain injuries made him susceptible to other diseases. And he knows many fighters and ex-fighters with similar problems. What upsets him to no end today is seeing parents encourage and even steer their children into training and competing in sports where inflicting head trauma resulting in brain injuries is common and often legal within the sport's rules. "Parents have to take responsibility," he argued, when it comes to having their children participate in sports like rugby, American football, boxing, and MMA. We discussed how many parents are attached to a "macho" culture which ignores health and safety, why he recommends only sports which are "low impact" and have a relatively low chance of head trauma, how even non-contact sports today are becoming "really physical," and much, much more. So. You lost your mortgage and 1/7 of your car betting that Viktor Postol would kneel before the awesome power of Lucas Matthysse. Don't blame us, man! We just talk here. If you missed it, Postol actually broke Matthysse down over 10 rounds on HBO before taking him out with a right hand. Well, it also seems that Matthysse took the count after being knocked down rather than get up and face more punishment, but the result was surprising. Where do Postol and Matthysse go from here? In the TV opener, Antonio Orozco won a fishy decision over Humberto Soto despite losing a point and appearing to lose the fight itself, in the eyes of many. Looks like Soto is still viable. How far will Orozco go? On Showtime, Adrien Broner punished Khabib Allakhverdiev for 11 rounds before the latter was saved by the referee in the final round. Has Broner matured at all? Opening up that broadcast, Edner Cherry gave Jose Pedraza a far tougher fight than two cards would indicate. possibly doing enough to earn a win. But... #Boxing. James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor will have things to say about all of these fights. Yay. This week's schedule is mostly devoid of big names, though there are a few televised cards that might be deceptively fun. After that, action picks up quickly and should be consistent for a while. Hopefully the weak beginning of 2015 is finally over, now that we're nine months into the year. Yeah, it took a while, but now at least there seems to be solid blocks of decent boxing on. There was that heavyweight clash on NBC between Deontay Wilder and Johann Duhaupas, and the fight between Juan Francisco Estrada and Hernan "Tyson" Marquez was fun, but this weekend looks more promising. On HBO and live from the seemingly lucky StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., Mucas Matthysse and Viktor Postol square off in what could be a trickily good fight, while Antonio Orozco vs Humberto Soto opens up the telecast. Unfortunately, the Showtime broadcast on Saturday night will go head-to-head with HBO, featuring Adrien Broner vs Khabib Allakhverdiev. The co-featur, Jose Pedraza vs Edner Cherry, isn't much to write home about, unfortunately. As always, hosting the show are James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor. We're sorry. Follow them on Twitter... James Foley: @JFoley81 Patrick Connor: @PatrickMConnor Thanks for tuning in!

As silly as 2015 has been for boxing and as frustrating it's been for many fans, there is still hope. The final four months or so of the year look more promising, starting with this weekend's match up between Abner Mares vs Leo Santa Cruz on ESPN, by Premier Boxing Champions. Not to be outdone, at least in the drama department, Shane Mosley is schedule to return after a more than 18-month layoff to face old foe Ricardo Mayorga on a Pay-Per-View show - if it doesn't get shut down by Don King first. Since Top Men took a week off, there's also a matter of Krzysztof Glowacki's highly entertaining upset win over reigning cruiserweight belt-holder Marco Huck to discuss. There is serious talk of it being the "Fight of the Year" thus far, and it's tough to argue at this point. Don't forget more random news, like updates on the Miguel Cotto vs Saul "Canelo" Alvarez ticket situation, and the same for Floyd Mayweather vs Andre Berto. There's an update for the Mayweather-Berto undercard, testing policy for Lucas Matthysse vs Viktor Postol, a new foe for Terence Crawford and more. Through it all, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight CIty's Patrick Connor will try to keep you laughing. Or at least feeling awkward. Thanks for tuning in! Povetkin KO Win Still Making News | Big Fight Weekend Podcast (Ep. 3)

A vicious left uppercut, a Top Rank boxing “bubble” cult- hero and and an intriguing fight midweek in Australia are all part of the latest Big Fight Weekend podcast. Join host T.J. Rives and his guests as they recap last weekend and look ahead to the top fights in the ring this week. T.J. welcomes in, senior writer from the BFW website, Marquis Johns, and boxing enthusiast / analyst Dan Canobbio host of “Inside Boxing Live,” the weekly internet/television show on Thursday nights to break it all down. The guys go over the stunning reversal, one punch knockout upset by Russian Heavyweight, Alexander Povetkin (above) over English, number one WBC Contender Dillian Whyte last Saturday night in England. The one punch KO is still reverberating throughout the boxing world and it has dashed Whyte’s hopes of trying to get a title shot anytime soon. The guys also discuss Middleweight (and former UFC fighter) Clay Collard, who has suddenly become an undercard sensation in the Top Rank Boxing “bubble fights” in Las Vegas. Collard has already won five fights in 2020, including the last three by knockout in the Vegas bubble since June. The guys also discussed the Wednesday morning, U.S time, Australian Wednesday night showdown between former World Welterweight champion Jeff Horn and Country favorite Tim Tszyu, which may be the fight of the year in that country. Tszyu is the young, unbeaten son of former Undisputed Junior Lightweight champion in the 1990s, Kostya Tszyu and seems to be ticketed for stardom. Horn is best known for having upset Hall of Famer-to-be, Manny Pacquiao, two years ago for the WBO 147 lb. title. He has since lost that built to American superstar, Terence Crawford and desperately wants to get back into the World title picture. Currently, Tszyu is the -235 favorite, but Horn at +185 might be a very interesting underdog play for the fight on Wednesday. Finally, T.J. and the guys go over the Top Rank Boxing main event coming Saturday night, where Unified Junior Welterweight Champion, Jose Luis Ramirez of Mexico, will defend his 140 lb. titles against Russian former World Champ, Viktor Postol in Vegas.
