Welcome back to Born to Watch, the movie podcast where we dive deep into the films that define genres, push boundaries, and leave audiences speechless. This week, we're tackling one of the greatest action films of the modern era with our Mad Max Fury Road (2015) Movie Review. When George Miller resurrected the Mad Max franchise in 2015, nobody expected just how monumental Fury Road would become. A two-hour adrenaline rush packed with death-defying stunts, high-speed chases, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this film redefined what action movies could be. From the stunning cinematography to the minimal but powerful storytelling, Fury Road remains a cinematic triumph. But where does it rank in the Mad Max series? And is it truly a Mad Max movie, or does Furiosa steal the show? The BTW team breaks it all down.Mad Max Returns—But Is He the Star?Tom Hardy takes over the iconic role of Max Rockatansky, a road-weary survivor haunted by his past. But does Max get lost in the dust in a film filled with larger-than-life warlords, kamikaze war boys, and a heavy-metal guitarist strapped to a flame-throwing rig?Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa might be the real heart of Fury Road. Her mission to rescue the wives of the tyrannical Immortan Joe drives the story forward, and her character's emotional depth makes her one of the most compelling action heroines of all time. We discuss whether Fury Road is more of a Furiosa film than a Max one—and how this dynamic affects the franchise as a whole.Behind-the-Scenes Mayhem: A Production NightmareThe journey to bring Mad Max Fury Road to life was almost as chaotic as the movie. Originally planned to film in the Australian Outback, unexpected rainstorms turned the barren wasteland into a flower-filled paradise, forcing the production to move to Namibia. Months of gruelling desert shoots, on-set conflicts, and the sheer ambition of the stunts made this one of the most difficult productions in recent memory.George Miller, the mastermind behind the franchise, pushed for practical effects wherever possible. Almost everything you see on screen—the insane car chases, the gravity-defying stunts, and the war rigs tearing across the desert—was done for real. The result? It is a visceral, pulse-pounding experience unlike anything else. The Legacy of Fury RoadWhen Fury Road hit theatres, it was more than just a blockbuster—it was a game-changer. The film scored 10 Oscar nominations, winning six, including Best Editing for George Miller's wife, Margaret Sixel. But beyond the awards, Fury Road proved that practical effects, real stunts, and original storytelling could still dominate in an era of CGI-heavy action films. But how does it hold up nearly a decade later? Does Fury Road deserve a spot among the greatest action movies ever? And where does it sit in the Mad Max franchise compared to The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome? The BTW Verdict: An Action MasterpieceWith non-stop action, unforgettable characters, and some of the most visually stunning cinematography in movie history, Mad Max Fury Road is a must-watch for any action fan. Whether you're revisiting it for the tenth time or experiencing it for the first, there's no denying that this film is a relentless, high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.Tune in to this week's episode as we break down every explosive moment, debate the film's legacy, and determine if Fury Road is the best Mad Max film yet. Don't forget to leave a review, share the episode with fellow movie lovers, and share your thoughts on the film!

We're on a break at the moment, researching and writing our sixth series, but, to fill the gap, this is the third of six new compilation episodes containing a trio of stories from across our earlier series. We've entitled this episode Three Murders, as these stories are all about people being “done in” by nefarious means. They include our second-lap County Durham story, The Cold Lad, our recent Huntingdonshire story, The Witches of Warboys, and our Oxfordshire story from Series 4, The Taste of Lightning. We really hope you enjoy them, and will be back with another new compilation episode next Monday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Send me a text message Join me for another True-Crime Style Witch Trial story, that saw three witches (the Samuell family) accused, charged, tried and executed for witchcraft.  Including one of the few men who were persecuted in this way.The episode tells the story of Alice Samuel who, at the age of 76, became the victim of witchcraft accusations by the children in the house she served. Mass hysteria (or so I believe), ensued, and left 17 members of the household with unexplainable physical symptoms, as well as accusations against Alice. This heart-breaking account saw Alice, her husband, John, and their daughter, Agnes, being hanged for the crime of Witchcraft. It was this very case that was also thought to be the one that made witchcraft a felony, which meant it was tried by the court run by parliament, as opposed to being run by the clergy. Unfortunately this meant that many more innocent women's (and some men's) lives would be claimed by this law.As with all witch trial stories, I will be lighting a candle for:Alice SamuellJohn SamuellAgnes SamuellAnd all the other victims of the witch trials. What's that you say? Didn't you just review The Road Warrior on your recent Australian Apocalypse podcast? True enough! But! We glossed over an important ingredient in the film's success and we're going to make amends as we break down all the  Mad Maxes.  I'm joined this week by my kid sister, the renowned English lit snob and biker movie enthusiast Roseanne Caputi and returning to the program after a year-long spell are both author and hypnotherapist Joe Field and erstwhile photographer, musician, podcaster and now website owner Kendrick WrightThe synopses: Mad Max is set “a few years” into the future where society is breaking down and car and motorcycle gangs rule the road striking fear into the hearts of ordinary schmoes just trying to survive.  Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky  has everything ]  taken from him, when his wife and kid are killed by the evil Toecutter and a soul-crushed Max becomes a one-man killing force, The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2  raises the stakes of its predecessor, and calls out the societal issue as a great war between two tribes and picks up the story with Max travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of  civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a chance to survive and a little notion called hope. “ In Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Max, now a full-fledged nomadic warrior, has all his possessions stolen and in trying to track them down, finds a sleazy desert trading post called Bartertown. Max strikes a bargain with the town's ruler Aunty Entity in order to regain his possessions.  When Max refuses to kill a simple man, he is sent out into the desert to die but is saved by a tribe of kids looking for a hero.  Mad Max: Fury Road finds Max imprisoned in a rock fortress called the Citadel and forced into being a blood supplier for the sickly War Boys of the cult warlord leader Immortan Joe. When Joe's chief transportation lieutenant Imperator Furiosa betrays Joe and smuggles his wives from Joe's harem to bring them to the safety of the Green Place, Joe's Army and the armies of the neighboring Bullet Town and Gas Town give a desperate chase to get Joe's wives back. During the chaos, Max escapes captivity and forms an uneasy alliance with Furiosa as the two hurtle down Fury Road in an epic chase for their lives and the future of civilization. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga –  a franchise first prequel and continuity driven story of Young Furiosa, how she lost  her mother, her true love and her arm at the hands of the demagogue Dr. Dementus, a cruel rabble rouser who starts a wasteland war with Immortatan Joe and the leaders of the of Bulletown and Gas Town.

Season 1 Episode 10 - In this episode, the first season finale, I had a conversation with Rebecca Vernon, whose latest project The Keening arrived in our ears last year. You may recall that Rebecca is the founder of the band SubRosa, whose influence has been felt across the doom/sludge scene for nearly 20 years. Rebecca and I sat down and she told me about her “uncool beginnings” (her words, not mine) in the alternative music scene in Utah where she spent her teenage years and early adulthood, and how that led to the formation of SubRosa and the work she's doing today. We talked about a lot of other things, including ska, the surprisingly vibrant goth scene Salt Lake City, how she first became a drummer, and later how she stepped out from behind the kit and picked up the guitar and fronted a band for the first time.  I hope you enjoy the conversation! Then, they get into some strange sightings including dogman, bigfoot, alien abduction, and even a possible Leprechaun sighting. After the break, Kyle brings up The Nameless Thing of Berkley Square. The Nameless Thing of Berkeley Square is a particularly gruesome and feared entity from British folklore, specifically from the English city of London, where it was believed to haunt the 2nd Floor of house No. 50 in the titular Berkeley Square. Starting in the year 1840 with the now infamous fate of Warboys and continuing until the 1930s, the monstrous reputation of the creature remains even to this day and the horrifying tale of Warboys remains one of London's most notorious ghost stories. Skeptics tend to view the Nameless Thing as a classic example of overly-active imagination and rumors mixing together to create a very spooky but ultimately fictional horror story, but as is the case with many paranormal events, no one can fully know either way. We all agree that Max's road to redemption is less defined than Furiosa's, but that road is full of War Boys ready to fight and die for their leader as they attempt to bring back his escaped best wives. It's more than just mediocre; it's a great film full of wonderful cinematography and well-choreographed car chase action from beginning to end. Just like Max, we're off on another adventure and we hope to someday ride eternal shiny and chrome.

In looking for a horseman who has a close connection with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes we plucked from the archives,  a podcast with Craig Carmody. The former successful jockey is now training a small team at Randwick, hoping another Intergaze will walk into his stables. Craig rode the talented chestnut in his two Queen Elizabeth Stakes wins in the late 90's. Craig reflects on his decision to retire after returning from Singapore in 2005. He looks back on his transition into the training ranks. Craig speaks of the plight of the smaller trainers who don't have access to the spending power of wealthy owners. The former multiple Gr 1 winning jockey talks of a few special horses who got him on his way as a trainer. He acknowledges the talents of Sydney's female jockeys He talks about his final riding contract in Singapore which brought him in touch with his future wife. Craig looks back on his starring role in a Telecom TV commercial. He was one of several young Sydney jockeys who auditioned for the part. His screen test blew the others out of the water. He remembers the first moment he sat on a horse's back. A spark was ignited. Craig reviews his apprenticeship to Rod Craig and the enduring friendship they continue to share. He reflects on his long association with Les Bridge- an association which led to his first Melbourne Cup ride. Craig reminisces about his winning rides on quality gallopers Stylish Century and Angst. He remembers the retainer he held with the vast Nebo Lodge operation at Rosehill. Craig speaks with great affection of his once in a lifetime horse Intergaze. He reviews some of the stallion's best performances. Craig and his wife Keline are the proud parents of Liam and Mandy. Both children show exceptional sporting talent. Liam was a member of the under 12 Cronulla team in last year's Div 2 Little League baseball competition. His team won both the state and national titles after which they participated in the Warboys Cup. Formerly known as the Sydney Cup this is an individual competition offering an amazing incentive- a trip to Cooperstown in New York state  for a World Series in junior baseball. Not surprisingly Cronulla won the Warboys competition, with Liam one of the star players.  Craig and Keline have opted to take their first holiday in fifteen years and will fly to NY with Liam and his sister Mandy in July. A win for Liam's team would mean as much to Craig Carmody as his dual Queen Elizabeth Stakes victories on his old mate Intergaze.

Watch out maxochists, Sidey and Reegs once again push things to the maximum with this week's maxnificent themed show, starting out with a look at the Top 5 Maxes in movie and tv.MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was George Miller's triumphant 2015 return to the series which made his name and sees Tom Hardy take on the role of the eponymous protagonist who quickly finds himself mounted on the hood of a car and used as a blood bag to transfuse the irradiated blood of a bleach skinned religious zealot fuelled by dreams of death and Valhalla, as the desert warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) sets out with his army of War Boys in pursuit of Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), his trusted lieutenant and driver of the War Rig, who betrays him by freeing his five sex slave wives and escaping to find hope at the Green Place. Miller's extraordinary world and chaotic but impeccably filmed action are constantly captivating in a movie which might easily be written off as 'one long car chase' by detractors as if that was a bad thing anyway. Instead we get incredible visuals and in Theron's Furiosa, the franchise produces one of the truly iconic female action performances of all time. MAX & RUBY completes our maxcellent themed week in which the two rabbits of the title get up to... well I was going to say mischief but this week's episode in which the younger Max, clearly suffering from anxiety and ADHD, is placed in a scenario where it's impossible for him not to succumb to temptation and open a huge and mysterious present barely qualifies as tomfoolery let alone full blown mischief. Sister Ruby, burdened by the responsibility of looking after her brother due to the absence of their parents in their lives, desperately craves approval from authority figures. In a gripping season finale, Ruby contracts fatal mayxomatosis whilst Max faces a disciplinary hearing at work when he is caught maxturbating during a Zoom call  gone wrong. We love to hear from our listeners! The Cambridgeshire village of Warboys was the scene of one of the most famous English witch trials of the sixteenth century. There, the privileged daughters of the respected Squire Throckmorton accused a cantankerous elderly neighbour of witchcraft, sending the impoverished Alice Samuel to her death. This shocking case is the subject of a dazzling new novel The Bewitching by author Jill Dawson, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb's guest today. It explores a neglected episode of English history to powerful effect, vividly conveying the brutal tribalism that can erupt in a closed society and how victims can be persuaded to believe in their own wickedness. A dazzling, shocking novel that speaks to our times, drawing on the 16th-century case of the witches of Warboys. Alice Samuel might be old and sharp-tongued, but she's no fool. Visiting her new neighbours in her Fenland village, she suspects Squire Throckmorton's household is not as God-fearing as it seems and finds the children troubled. What she cannot foresee is that all five daughters will succumb in turn to a terrifying affliction and accuse her of witchcraft—who else to blame than an ugly, black-capped woman with mysterious healing skills? The Throckmortons' maid Martha, uncomfortably aware of strange goings-on in the household herself, is reluctant to believe that Alice is a witch. Yet visiting scholars attracted by the news are convinced, evidence mounts and soon the entire village is swept up in the frenzied persecution of one of their own community. Exploring a neglected episode in English history to powerful effect, The Bewitching chillingly conveys the brutal tribalism that can erupt in a closed society and how victims can be made to believe in their own wickedness.

We're back, folks, and we're here to tell an absolutely wild story from the nineteenth century. Katie (@KatesOfHeaven) leads Victoria (@dirtbagqueer) through the story of the Sewanee Road Warriors, the time a bunch of Confederate failgrandsons performed superhuman feats of strength. - We learn what nineteenth century football looked like, what schools played it, and just how horrible Sewanee was as a university (hint: very) - Football is played by men with names such as Diddy Seibels, Rex Kilpatrick, Warbler Wilson, and Bunny Pearce - Sewanee's legendary War Boys road trip, in which they kicked two thousand miles of ass in six days - John Heisman, football's Ben Shapiro - A cockamamie scheme to kidnap Kaiser Wilhelm II. No, really, that's not a joke If you like the show, give us a 5-star rating and leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Follow the show on Twitter @tuckrulepod for news/updates/football nonsense!

Episode 42 of Something In The Water welcomes a couple of west Georgia singer-songwriters, DeAnna Verneau and Daniel Parrish, of Flintlock Annie, a self-described grungy Americana band with leanings to country, soul, and blues. DeAnna began her musical journey as a 17-year-old Albany, Georgia vocalist who later worked with another popular local group, Meow Ka-Pow. Daniel was a late bloomer, first getting into guitar in his college years, followed by songwriting, sound production, and finally performing in bands. He hails from Pavo, Georgia, a small town outside of Moultrie and home of the late Cleve Dean, who in the mid-to-late Seventies was Arm-Wrestling Champion of the world. The musical segment features the duo performing a stripped down “Absent Cowboy”, with lyrics written by Jeff Hill, lead vocalist of the screamo group, Machinist; along with the Parrish-penned “Somewhere Alabama”. From their 2022 album, Moonshine Sin, we listen to “War Boys”, a powerful, open-chord, rock and roll number that was cowritten by the two songwriters on the night that Flintlock Annie was born.
