My guest today is Dr. Natalie Dyer, PhD, Research Scientist with Connor Whole Health at University Hospitals, Warrensville Heights, OH and President of the Center for Reiki Research. She has published many scientific papers and book chapters on postmaterialist science, psychedelics, and the therapeutic effects of integrative medicine practices, including Reiki, yoga, acupuncture, and mindfulness, and is co-editor of the book Expanding Science: Visions of a Postmaterialist Paradigm and the forthcoming book Infinite Percepton: The Power of Psychedelics for Global Transformation. Natalie is also an energy medicine practitioner and teacher. Her passion is in understanding and addressing mental and physical health from a psychospiritual perspective. She lives in the woods on the east coast of Canada with her husband, artist Louis Dyer and their freshly minted three-months-old daughter.I asked Natalie to explain the term post-materialism science? Natalie said that it signifies a new age in science, where we move beyond the limitations of the materialist paradigm, which states that everything can be reduced to matter, including consciousness. Many scientists and theologians believe that matter emerges from consciousness instead of the other way around. Post-materialism scientists adopt the findings of quantum mechanics, and acknowledge that that the mind affects measurements of various experiments in physics. It doesn't exclude materialism. Since Natalie's next book is about psychedelics, I wondered what role do psychedelics play in treating people with mental distress. The usual approach taken is by way of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy in a setting where there's a therapist who has been trained in administering psychedelics who guides the individual to step outside of their normal operating ego self, and to view their whole life, including what led to, and what keeps the depression going through this shift outside of the normal, mundane day to day thinking process. The psychedelics can show them, how their depression developed, and how they're keeping it going with their thoughts and their beliefs. So that they get is this chance to step outside of the normal narrative of their life. And that can cause a profound shift. There can be a scary kind of loss of control, when there's that ego death, where you're kind of stepping outside of your normal function of your mental awareness. That's where the therapist comes, reassuring the person that it's ok, that they are safe to continue. Then hopefully, the therapist can facilitate integration to take place and make changes based on what was discovered. What does a shamanic Reiki master, like her, do? “Reiki is a biofeedback therapy. It's 100 years old at this point, but it's based on practices that go back 1000s of years, like Chi Gong, for example. And the idea is that anytime we have disease in the body, or we're unwell, there's an imbalance in our lifeforce energy. So that's called many different things, chi, prana. Spirit. So that's the basis for these practices.”“Reiki works to bring balance back to that energy system and hoping that the physical system corresponds with that shift. So you learn to tap into the intention of channeling this energy, which is infinite and everywhere. That's the idea. And you either give this energy to yourself, so you're just kind of bringing this energy through into your body, or you give it to another person. ““What I found when I started doing Reiki was really experiencing theIf you liked this podcast please tell your friends about it, subscribe to this podcast wherever you listen to podcasts and/or write a brief note on apple podcasts, check out my blogs on Psychology Today at https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/contributors/thomas-r-verny-md

Nakia Jones always wanted to be a productive member in her neighborhood and was drawn to a career where she could both “protect and serve”. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio and studied criminal justice at Wilberforce University with the intention of becoming a prosecuting attorney .In 1999 Officer Jones joined the Highland Hills Police Department and in 2002 she was sworn in as the first African American female officer for the City of Warrensville Heights where she also lived. She held that position as the Senior Response Officer until 2017. After the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling in 2016 she posted a passionate video on Facebook responding to the shootings as a mother, an African American ad a police officer. Little did she know, what she thought was a personal post for friends and family would go viral. Within 24 hours her video had been viewed more than 1.2 million times with nearly 80,000 shares and the views continued to climb. Her video, which lasts more than seven minutes, included calling out any officers who may have racial problems continues to be watched three years later. Officer Jones talks about the contradictions between living as an African American woman and mother while walking the “Blue” line as a police officer.
There are major concerns about attempts being made around the country to suppress the black vote along with other non-white populations. This is especially true in urban areas and in the South. Polling places have been closed in some areas and voting machines have been limited thereby creating long lines of potential voters. These suppression attempts are teamed with President Donald Trump’s attacks on mail-in voting to raise doubts about the sanctity and security of our Presidential Election. Congresswoman Marcia Fudge has studied these issues in-depth and chairs the House Administration Committee’s Subcommittee on Elections. She and several of her colleagues are working feverishly to stem this tide but time is running short for this upcoming election. She has been working on a new Voting Rights Act that improves the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that was gutted by the United States Supreme Court in 2013. Congresswoman Fudge also has championed the Vote SAFE Act which promotes voter security and provides $3.6 billion in funding to help states conduct safe and secure elections. She claims that President Trump has “systematically destroyed the trust and confidence in our election system” and that must stop, she adds. The Congresswoman knows that major election changes are unlikely prior to this Presidential Election. Therefore, she urges all people, but especially African Americans and other people of color to do everything possible to vote and make sure their vote counts. She highlights that this election is so important to create change that will allow federal legislation to pass to protect voting for all people in the future. Congresswoman Fudge joined Congress in 2008. Before that she was the first black and the first woman mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio and she also worked in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office.
Special Guest Officer Nakia Jones. Prayer by Mother Joan Johnson “THE TRUTH DIVIDED” Officer Nakia Jones Being called for a time such as this, Officer Nakia Jones’ passionate and heartfelt outcry over the death of Alton Sterling and other young African American males went viral and took the nation by storm. As seen on BET, The Roland Martin Show, The Tom Joyner Show and other media outlets across the country, Officer Jones has been vocal about her outrage over the actions taken by some of her fellow men in blue. This life altering experience, inspired Officer Jones to write her book “The Truth Divided”, which was released in April of 2018. Born in Cleveland Ohio, Officer Jones is the oldest of her siblings. In 1990 she graduated from Shaw High School and attended Wilberforce University. She chose Criminal Justice as her major because she was aspiring to become a prosecuting attorney. However, in 1996 she chose a different career path and in September of that year she was sworn in as a Police Officer for the City of East Cleveland. Ironically, this was the same city in which she lived and graduated from high school. Officer Jones always wanted to be a productive member in her neighborhood. In 1999 Officer Jones joined the Highland Hills Police Department and in 2002 she was sworn in as the first African American female officer for the City of Warrensville Heights. She held that position as the Senior Response Officer until 2017. Officer Jones not only worked for the City of Warrensville Heights, but she also lived in the city. She is an active member of her community and volunteers for career day throughout the district. On many occasions, Officer Jones sat with Juveniles and their families, while off duty, to help resolve conflict. Officer Jones’ fervent plea over the death of Alton Sterling shook the nation. As her words resounded from coast to coast, it became clear that her life would never be the same. She has already released her book, “The Truth Divided” and is now considering authoring a follow up book, as her journey for justice continues. Officer Jones wants to leave a positive mark on the world. She believes that if you want change it starts with the person you look at every day in the mirror; if you want change you must be that change. A strong woman of faith, Officer Jones is also a well-known Gospel Play write in Cleveland Ohio. She believes that through her gospel plays she can help restore hope and change lives one gospel play at a time. If you ask Officer Jones about a quote that describes her, she would say “I am my sister and my brother’s keeper”. She believes that with a little compassion and unselfishness we all can make a difference and can change the world. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/preachlafleur/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/preachlafleur/support

"Sometimes the best thing God can do is knock you down to make you look up." This conversation allows Dr. Vernon to explain himself by tracking his path to the pulpit and giving insight into how he feels about his work. He boldly shares why the happiest day of his life was (with the exception of the birth of his children) when the Second Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cleveland made him its pastor in 1999, at the age of 27. He learned the lesson that he has about three minutes to not be boring, otherwise he'll lose their attention. He refers to his present location in Warrensville Heights as "the mothership," and he films all of his Sunday worship programs at that location. With the topics he pursues, he discusses how he always seeks relevance to people's daily lives. he wants them "to feel church." Dr. Vernon also is well known for serving as a pastor who pastors other pastors. He believes that if he can help those individuals, then he can help all of their communities by extension. He details his life growing up in various Cleveland neighborhoods, including the E. 40th and Kinsman area and the Corlett community. His fond memories of those days is one of the reasons why he established one of his churches there. "I had to be the best, no matter where the work was coming from." This conversation follows Mr. Dillard's intense journey as a business owner. His first exposure to entrepreneurialism came when he worked in a bank and found himself paying close attention to those who worked as entrepreneurs. He drew on his hardwired mentality as a competitive athlete to drive his success, something he quickly experienced in advertising sales for the CBS affiliate WOIO-Channel 19 early in his career. He shares the challenges an athlete feels in replacing the high that sports deliver. "That never goes away." He also discusses his franchise business which provides opportunities for other to become entrepreneurs. About 80% of those owners have other full time jobs, so this becomes a meaningful source of supplemental income. Entry starts at $950 and requires a 5-week training program at his office in Warrensville Heights. I hate to give away too much here, but Mr. Dillard made some powerful points, like the following: "I have an affinity for helping African American males see their future. When I was 18 years old, on my way to an Ivy League school (Cornell), while being all-state in two sports, I had never met a black business owner or doctor, attorney or dentist. Never had a black teacher. Obviously, there's a problem with that. So, I was like everyone else, I wanted to be a professional basketball player. That's the only thing I saw on TV. That's not a good thing. So that's why I give back." Please dive into his story and surface with a real appreciation for the work he is doing in the community. Listen as Mr. Embrescia talks about his past which began with life in Cleveland until his family moved up to Warrensville Heights where his father served on city council. As a teenager, Mr. Embrescia worked on garbage collection until he was fired for goofing around. He tells about the life lessons he learned watching his father's work come and go at times as a carpenter while his mother would handle the family's tight budget. He shares one of his early sources of wonder, experienced while handling delivery for his Cleveland Press paper route when he lived on King's Highway in Warrensville Heights. "I would try to figure out what people did who lived in the area's nicest houses." He understood the importance of money and how it could transform family life, so the seeds for entrepreneurialism began to germinate at a young age. He discusses how his learning curve was extended by working for mentor and businessman Nick Mileti, who had ownership interests in the 1970s in the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Crusaders hockey team, the Coliseum at Richfield and radio station "3WE" - WWWE AM/1100 with the corresponding FM station WWWM 105. Little known fact: the "E" stood for Embrescia and the "M" stood for Mileti. He sums up his own radio and TV station ownership journey by saying he had some good luck to be "in the right place at the right time in good industries." But he undersells the central role his keen ability to pay attention to all the forces at hand played in his success. Lastly, note Mr. Embrescia's explanation covering his entry into the business of selling licences for the use of domain names he has purchased such as .JOBS. Mr. Heinen discloses the story of how the family business got started which largely related to his grandfather Joseph Heinen's visionary abilities, his independent thinking and his willingness to take risks. He shares that Joseph knew the extension of I-480 would be arriving at some point which made Warrensville Heights a very attractive location so that he could more easily deliver supplies to stores on the west side. Mr. Heinen also discusses how the business was driven from it its earliest days by an interest in dealing directly with suppliers, thereby circumventing wholesalers when possible which permitted a price advantage that was passed along to customers. Items could be bought in bulk and stored, too, with the company's tremendous warehouse capacity. He explains how this also allowed the company to control its own destiny. He also explores the company's incorporation of private label products, including its Two Brothers line with its logo inspired by Picasso's style. He reveals the exponential growth in prepared foods, with the chain being one the national leaders in this aspect of sales. Convenience is a big part of today's lifestyles, and the store has positioned itself to provide healthy options...while eliminating the time and dishes required to put dinner on the table. Waste prevention is another factor - consumers buy as needed, and it solves lots of problems, he explains. Food delivery is another channel that is opening up, with industry experts predicting that 25% of all food will be acquired through this method by 2025. Enjoy a window into this business which has a big footprint in Warrensville Heights and makes a huge impact on lives throughout the area. He details how, in 2010, the doors opened at his franchise in Harvard Park, near the corner of Harvard and Richmond Road in Warrensville Heights. His location leads the market in Northeast Ohio in terms of retail sales, a significant achievement in and of itself, but accomplished while having the smallest stand-alone structure in the area. It was the first new construction project that was part of a $110 million capital improvement program to build new branches across the county. There was great need for a new facility in Warrensville Heights and there was tremendous support for it from across the city, including residents, city council members and city hall staff. "The old branch looked like a bunker and felt like a bunker," she said. She discusses the new role that libraries are playing in patrons' lives, with the emphasis now being less about the circulation of materials and more about what services can be provided. As a result, the branch has seen its participation numbers rise significantly from all ages groups.
This illuminating conversation covers the early days of Warrensville Heights' residential development through the lens of one prominent developer. Law and banking in one podcast. Take deep breaths lest your racing heart burst in your chest. You think I'm joking. Probably because you don't know Mehrsa Baradaran. But then, you probably do, because everyone does. We talk about, among other things, how one should say “Mehrsa,” what banking is, It’s a Wonderful Life, how banks are subsidized and regulated, how 40 percent of the country doesn’t really bank or at least “underbanks,” and payday lenders. Christian does not call Joe “Adam Smith.” Mehrsa defends banking at the post office (dubbed by one banking industry exec “the worst idea since the Ford Edsel”). From the bank bailouts to moral hazard to the the precarious financial position of the working poor, we cover a lot of ground. And, naturally, speed traps. (Update 11/24/2018: Christian here. A listener got in touch with some very thoughtful criticism of our discussion during the intro. Talking about a gendered list, I casually raised switching genders to get on this list, in a way that the listener perceived as making a joke of transgender people. It pains me that this discussion would hurt anyone. I’m very sorry. Although it has been a long time since this conversation, I know my intent was to poke a little fun at the gendered nature of the list, though I winced at my ham-fisted mention of reassignment surgery. I hope it’s a sign of progress that I don’t believe the conversation would be the same today as it was then. But we feel strongly that retroactively editing the show should be reserved for truly exceptional situations, not to save face.)
