This week's guest: Trygve Olson from the Lincoln Democracy Institute on growing violence in politics. We now have an audio tape of Donald Trump committing a felony: sharing classified military information that he stole from the White House and giving the details to people with no security clearance. Despite that, Oakland Republicans hand him a certificate for a made-up award as "Man of the Decade" which Trump immediately "humbly" included in a fundraising email. Back in the real world, the administration launches an all-out campaign promoting Bidenomics ... with some snark aimed at Republicans who "voted no but take the dough." The Supreme Court wraps up this term with positive results on voting rights, and reversing precedent on affirmative action in college admissions. In Michigan, a new state budget is now on the Governor's desk — on time and balanced, with major new funding for education, and tax cuts for millions of Michiganders. The Legislature also sends a tranche of bills on everything from expanded civil rights to allowing beer at college football games.  And while the Michigan Legislature is passing laws to improve our elections process, there are warning signs about the potential for increased political violence. A new comprehensive national survey warns of an increasing appetite and tolerance for violence as a part of our political process. We talk with the onetime Mitch McConnell staffer who led the study … along with a collaborator on that report, the honorable and esteemed Mr. Jeff Timmer. =========================== This week's podcast is underwritten in part by EPIC-MRAEPIC ▪ MRA is a full service survey research firm with expertise in: • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management =========================== This week's news links Michigan Politics and Policy Lincoln Democracy Project Full Study Lincoln Democracy Project Summary Supreme Court ruling on online harassment angers victims, advocates - The Washington Post Michigan Legislature sends $81.7B state budget to Whitmer's desk - Detroit Free Press Michigan lawmakers approve record $82B budget plan - Detroit News Michigan passes $21.5B school budget with boost for at-risk students | Bridge Michigan Michigan budget has $950M in no-bid pork projects, some transparency reforms - Bridge Michigan Early voting, beer in college stadiums await Michigan Gov. Whether you like him or hate him, Joe Biden is the President of the United States and Donald Trump is not. If this is the first time hearing this, you may want to sit down and brace yourself for how Trump lost the 2020 election. We talk this week with a man who has spent considerable time with the former President, and probably knows why Donald Trump didn't get a second term. In his recent book, "Frankly, We Did Win This Election" Michael Bender, reporter for the Wall Street Journal chronicles the last year of Trump's presidency and highlights some of the significant moments that convinced the country to make a different choice for who they want as President. With carefully sourced interviews and conversations with Trump himself, Michael provides the reader of his book with an inside look at the chaos, confusion, and even compassion, that existed in the White House during Trump's tenure. This is a phenomenal read, that we highly recommend you buy. Trust me on this!Guest Bio:MICHAEL C. BENDER is the senior White House reporter for the Wall Street Journal whose coverage of President Trump has been recognized for its deep sourcing, balance, and valuable behind-the-scenes portraits of Trump's administration and presidential campaigns. Bender was awarded the Gerald R. Ford Foundation Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency in 2019 for work that “set a consistently high standard of reporting” and “provided a valuable chronicle of the president, his team, and the movement that has reshaped American politics and national policy.” In 2020, he received the National Press Club award for political analysis for a series of stories that detailed the sights, sounds, and inner workings of Trump campaign rallies. Since 2000, Bender has covered local, state, and national politics for the Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction, Colorado, Dayton Daily News, Palm Beach Post, Tampa Bay Times, and Bloomberg News. He joined the Journal in 2016 and published more than eleven hundred stories about Trump in the next five years. He has also served as an on-air political analyst for CNN. Born and raised in Cleveland with his six younger sisters, Bender graduated from the Ohio State University in 2000 with a degree in history and now lives in Washington with his wife, Washington Post White House bureau chief Ashley Parker, and their two daughters.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/faithpolitics)

As the 2020 election vote-counting continues in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada and Alaska, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is inching closer to being declared President-elect. Early this morning, Biden overtook President Trump’s early lead in Pennsylvania, as mail in-votes from the Philadelphia area are tallied. Pennsylvania election officials expect to complete their canvassing of ballots by the end of the day. In Georgia, as mail-in votes from the Atlanta metro area are added to the totals, Mr. Biden has earned the lead in that traditionally red state. Officials there announced an hour ago that they plan a recount. In Arizona, a state that has already been called for Mr. Biden by Fox News and the Associated Press, Biden maintains a lead that has grown smaller in the last several hours. In Nevada, Biden’s lead is just over 11,000 votes. At this hour, neither the Associated Press nor any of the networks have declared Mr. Biden the winner, but Mr. Trump’s path to victory grows more unlikely with each passing hour. Yesterday evening, the President took the podium at the White House Briefing Room and delivered a shameful, barely coherent diatribe in which he made claims so voluminous and false that NPR and other networks quickly cut away from his remarks to keep misinformation off of the air. The Trump campaign has filed suit in several state courts to stop the counting of votes. Several of those suits have already been thrown out. Later in this hour, Tom speaks with The Washington Post White House reporter Anne Gearans about the President's controversial response to the increasingly dire re-election prospects. But Tom's first guest is Kim Wehle. She is a law professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, and the author of What You Need to Know About Voting and Why. She joins us on Zoom.

In the reporter’s latest book – the award-winning A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. What are these patterns and values and what implications do they have for US politics and foreign policy? How are they faring in a pandemic and economic disaster? And how would a second term of office for the Trump administration differ from the first? To discuss these issues, USSC hosted a webinar event featuring Pulitzer Prize and George Polk Award-winning writer Philip Rucker in conversation with United States Studies Centre CEO Professor Simon Jackman.
