They were perhaps an unlikely trio: the professor Leah Stokes, the policy wonk Sonia Aggarwal in the White House, and the DC insider Adrian Deveny in the Senate, but together, they crafted the boldest climate legislation of our time. In her newest book, The Carbon Wave, Leah Stokes chronicles the turbulent path of their climate bill as it veered between breakthrough and collapse — from the hopeful beginnings of the Green New Deal in 2018, to the bill's near-certain defeat by Senator Joe Manchin in the winter of 2021, to the surprise passage of the landmark legislation in August 2022. During this critical time, the author was pregnant, or in the NICU with her premature twins, and Aggarwal and Deveny were new parents too. Interlacing personal narratives with stories from Congress, the White House, and outside activists, Stokes shows how dogged perseverance and collective action can still bend the course of history. The book concludes with an update from the second Trump administration, explaining the parts of the bill that were — and were not — rolled back, and why we should remain hopeful that progress is still being made. Everyone has been told to shrink their carbon footprint and lighten their load on our planet by changing their behavior. But what if instead of making ourselves smaller, we joined with others to maximize our impact? Leah C. Stokes is Anton Vonk Associate Professor of Environmental Politics at UC Santa Barbara. As a leading climate advocate, she has championed climate policy in the United States at all levels of government and was selected for Time Magazine's Time100 Next list and Business Insider's top 30 global climate leaders. A recipient of a Harvard University Radcliffe Fellowship, she is the author of the award-winning Short Circuiting Policy, which was listed as one of the top 5 climate books in 2020 by The New York Times. David Roberts is the owner and writer of Volts, a newsletter and podcast about clean energy and politics. He previously covered energy and environmental issues for Vox and Grist. His work has been featured in The Chicago Tribune, Reuters and The Atlantic and he has appeared on CNN and the CBC. He lives in Seattle. Sarah and JVL are together again and JVL is raging. The president of the United States accused the Democratic party plotting to assassinate him and . . . everyone just pretends it didn't happen. Diesel prices are going to the moon. Trump wants to demolish the Kennedy Center. Joe Manchin came back from the grave to endorse Susan Collins. And there's a 90 percent chance that AI doesn't kill everyone alive. It's a short show, but a great show. Also: Sarah talks about the book tour and what it's like to feel the love you guys have shown her. Be careful; it gets a little dusty. Rita Cosby tackles breaking news and political flashpoints in this hard-hitting hour. Topics include a tragic stabbing attack at a Borough Park synagogue during the high holidays, the massive party collapse surrounding North Carolina candidate Shelley Hedden after extreme social media posts surfaced, and former CIA Director John Brennan being subpoenaed in a Trump-related investigation. Plus, newly released FBI details on would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks, Joe Manchin's endorsement in the tight Michigan Senate race, fiery caller debates over influencer Hasan Piker.
Chris Lawrence marks opening day of squirrel season with a full hour alongside Dave Arnold, co-founder of Class VI River Runners — which became Adventures on the Gorge — and one of the pioneers of the commercial whitewater rafting industry in West Virginia. Arnold traces the history of Gauley Season from its scrappy origins in a 1956 Safeway trailer to the congressional legislation championed by Congressman Nick Rahall that made downstream recreation an official project purpose of Summersville Dam, securing the annual fall water releases that now draw rafters from around the world. He also shares the inside story of the New River Gorge's elevation from national river to national park and preserve in 2020 — crediting Senators Capito and Manchin — and explains how the preserve designation protected hunting rights that nearly derailed the effort. The conversation also covers fishing on the Gauley's flat water below Swift, the economic boom across Fayetteville, Hinton, and surrounding communities, and Arnold's observation that the National Park designation benefited local towns more than the rafting industry itself.

Five years after the bombing at Abbey Gate, 13 Gold Star families are still waiting for a real, bipartisan accounting of what happened during the withdrawal from Afghanistan — and of the two decades of war that led to it. Paul Rieckhoff sits down with Connell McShane on News Nation for the weekly Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Wednesday hit and refuses to let the anniversary pass as another partisan food fight. He walks through what he calls the great American betrayal of Afghanistan, the Afghan allies still hung out to dry at home and abroad, and why an honest after-action review matters more than another round of finger-pointing. From there, the conversation pivots to the story the legacy media keeps missing: independents are now the plurality in sixteen states, roughly 48% of the country, while Republicans and Democrats sit at 27% each. Ten thousand Americans leave the two parties every single week. Paul breaks down the new farm team of independent veteran candidates — Todd Achilles up 5 on Jim Risch in Idaho, Seth Bodnar in Montana, competitive races in Nebraska and South Dakota — and explains why a single independent win in November could break the logjam the way Joe Manchin, Angus King, and Jesse Ventura have shown is possible. This is the map of the movement the MAGA machine and the DNC both want you to ignore. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Millions of American veterans are being locked out of primary elections in the country they served. Iowa's 1st Congressional District was decided by fewer than 800 votes last cycle, and this year it is headed for a third straight rematch between the same two major-party candidates. Michael Bridgford thinks that fatigue is exactly the opening for something different. A seventh-generation farm kid turned small business owner and financial adviser from the Quad Cities, Bridgford is running as an independent in what he calls the tightest district in the country, and he joins Radell to make the case. In this conversation, Bridgford lays out why he believes a handful of independents could reshape Congress from day one, from having a say in who becomes Speaker to forcing votes on term limits, campaign finance reform, a congressional stock trading ban, and mandatory retirement ages. He argues the affordability crisis traces back to fiscal recklessness and money printing, and explains why he ties inflation to the roughly 50 percent increase in the money supply since 2020. He digs into the data center and AI fight playing out in Iowa communities like Clinton, where he says local control and real guardrails matter more than tax abatements for the most profitable companies in history. Radell presses him on the tensions in his own platform: why he defends the filibuster even when it blocks popular policy, how a single House vote actually carries the leverage he compares to Joe Manchin's, and how he answers voters worried that an independent bid could tip the seat. Bridgford also weighs in on his opponents Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Christina Bohannan, and closes with rapid-fire takes on Donald Trump, immigration, the Iran conflict, U.S. support for Israel, and the SAVE Act. All views expressed by Michael Bridgford are his own. Purple Political Breakdown brings you the conversation so you can judge the ideas for yourself. The Independent Movement's Tipping Point. How One Senate Seat And Two Or Three House Seats Are All It Takes To Break Both Parties. For the first time on Independent Americans, Senator Joe Manchin and Heather Manchin sit down with Paul Rieckhoff to lay out exactly how they plan to break the grip of the rigged two-party system. Joe Manchin knows what one honest vote can do — he was the deciding vote in a 50-50 Senate and got more done in the 117th Congress than most Congresses in a generation. Heather Manchin brings the business mind: mapping the billions of dollars flowing left and right, the closed primaries in 16 states that shut independents out, and the digital strategy needed to punch through the echo chambers and actually win. Together, they make the case that this is the tipping point — and that a handful of independent seats in the House and Senate could change everything. And that their efforts through their new Independent Leadership Council initiative can help to propel that change. The conversation goes deep on Montana, where combat veteran Seth Bodnar now has a true three-way shot after the DSCC's preferred Democrat refused to step aside and the GOP hand-picked a Trump rubber stamp. Joe and Heather explain why independent veterans are the natural leaders of this movement, why the "spoiler" slander is draconian and antiquated, and why building a leadership pipeline from mayors and school boards up to the Senate is how you actually rewire American politics. It's a candid, tactical, and deeply hopeful conversation about turning frustration into structural power — and doing it before the 2026 midterms. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Check out the Independent Leadership Council here. -Millions of American veterans are being locked out of primary elections in the country they served. Plus: "Independents Aren't Real"? Kasich's Partisan Slander, Manchin's New PAC, and 45% of America Says Otherwise. Trump says he's close to an Iran deal. He's been saying he's a week away from a Putin deal for a year and a half. Paul Rieckhoff calls the head fake for what it is, warns the media not to fall for it again, and lays out the chaos Congress is trying to jam through before its six-week recess — including Todd Blanche's nomination and the weaponization fund built to compensate January 6th insurrectionists. The forever wars don't take August off, and neither do we. Then the real story: on August 4th, four independent veterans appear on a single top-two primary ballot in Eastern Washington. Nate Powell for U.S. House, Danny Tarkenton for Spokane County prosecutor, Aaron Croft for the State House, and Ronald McCoy for State Senate. Across those races, roughly 131,000 independents and 53,000 independent veterans can vote — a decisive bloc the corporate media isn't covering. Paul breaks down why open primaries are the battlefield, why John Kasich is wrong that independents aren't real, and what's coming next with Senator Joe Manchin, Heather Manchin, and Senator Angus King joining the show. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Check the IVA overview of Washington State's primary this week. -Millions of American veterans are being locked out of primary elections in the country they served. Pags reacts to a bombshell memo alleging the Biden administration was prepared to leave President Trump with an even bigger immigration crisis, asking whether the chaos at the border was part of the plan all along. Pags argues the left was never truly interested in helping migrants—they were interested in political power. He also breaks down Joe Manchin's latest political move as the former Democrat launches a new independent effort that could shake up Washington, and the crew debates whether Hollywood's new adaptation of The Odyssey is worth watching despite criticism over some "woke" creative choices. Then, Marine veteran and attorney John Deaton joins the program to explain why he's taking on Sen. Ed Markey in Massachusetts. Can a Republican finally break decades of one-party dominance in one of America's bluest states? Deaton lays out his strategy, why he believes voters are ready for change, and why this race could become one of the biggest surprises of the election cycle. Learn more about your ad choices. Trump's 2025 financial disclosure showing $2.2 billion in personal income, much of it from crypto, is drawing backlash even from Republican voters in Florida. CNN aired a supercut of Trump on the 2016 campaign trail ripping politicians who enrich themselves in office, nearly ten years to the day before his own disclosure dropped. John Fetterman appeared on Fox News to say the only thing that would make him leave the Democratic Party is if it turns on Israel, a position held by 80 to 90 percent of the Democratic voting base. Joe Manchin publicly encouraged Fetterman to go independent. Plus Carolyn Bourdeau's seems to dislike her party's gerrymandering response; why? And FRIDAY FUNNIES w/Sterling ThrillNew - and shocking - Democratic gubernatorial polling shows Keisha Lance Bottoms mightn't need worry about a run-off. The Insider Advantage polling of 800 likely Georgia voters (likely split in half by party affiliation but they gave us no in tabs) has Bottoms netting 52% of likely Democratic party voters with only 14% undecided - meaning if correct, there'd be no run-off. It also shows a neck-and-neck race for the GOP nod with Rick "the ick" Jackson and Burt Jones but Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger actually within striking distance and few undecideds there, too. I'm skeptical. - - - Meanwhile, Democrat and former Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux didn't race to pen an op/ed when Trump coaxed mid-decade gerrymanders in red states but is now bemoaning it all now that Democrats have responded. She, Joe Manchin & Kyrsten Sinema should gather for a meal or something. PLUS: my Friday Funnies therapy sesh with good friend, comedian Sterling Thrill.

In this episode, I chat with Don Moynihan, professor of public policy at the University of Michigan and author of the widely-read Substack newsletter Can We Still Govern? Don's research focuses on administrative burdens—the learning, compliance, and psychological costs people experience when interacting with government—and how those frictions shape public trust. We talk about the data challenges involved in measuring these experiences, how the shift to digital services changes the picture, and why governments historically have ignored the costs they impose on the people they serve. We also get into Don's own journey as a public communicator: how a rejected op-ed about Joe Manchin and the child tax credit sparked his newsletter, what it took to retrain himself to write for a general audience, and how he thinks about balancing timeliness with depth. If you're a researcher wondering whether public communication is worth the risk—or just curious about what makes government work (or not)—this one is for you.Keywordsadministrative burden, public policy, government services, bureaucracy, policy communication, Substack newsletter, academic writing, public administration, government trust, policy research, data visualization, civic engagement, open government, policy podcastSubscribe to the PolicyViz Podcast wherever you get your podcasts.Become a patron of the PolicyViz Podcast for as little as a buck a monthRead Don's newsletter Can We Still Govern?Follow me on Instagram, LinkedIn, Substack, Twitter, Website, YouTubeEmail: jon@policyviz.com
Chris Cuomo brings together key moments from this week's Cuomo Mornings on SiriusXM, featuring conversations with Representative Ryan Zinke (R-MT) and former Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV), along with calls from listeners reacting to America's growing conflict with Iran. Zinke argues the threat remains urgent, warning that Iran's nuclear capability and stated intent make it dangerous to step back too soon. Cuomo presses whether continued involvement can realistically eliminate that threat—or if the U.S. risks getting pulled deeper into a conflict with no clear end. Manchin focuses on the endgame, arguing that any lasting solution depends on regional partners and that the U.S. cannot stay indefinitely or attempt to control Iran's future. Callers challenge the case for continued conflict, question how foreign policy connects to issues at home, and raise frustrations about government spending, political priorities, and accountability.
