This week Vidar is reviewing the musical masterpiece that is A Chorus Line which revolutionised Broadway back in the mid 1970s as the Curve Theatre's touring production visited the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describers. About A Chorus Line Seventeen stories. Eight chances. One singular sensation! New York City, 1975. On an empty Broadway stage, seventeen performers are put through their paces in the final, gruelling audition for a new Broadway musical. Only eight will make the cut. A Chorus Line is a musical masterpiece that revolutionised Broadway, with creator Michael Bennett using real-life testimonies from late-night recording sessions with dancers. Celebrate the lives of theatre's unsung heroes, as they tell searing stories of ambition, shattered hopes, and what it really costs to follow your dreams. Originally produced at Curve and Directed by Nikolai Foster, with a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban, A Chorus Line features iconic songs including One, I Hope I Get It, Nothing and the hit ballad What I Did For Love. The legendary Adam Cooper (Singin' in the Rain, Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake) and Carly Mercedes Dyer (The Drifters Girl Tour, Anything Goes, Barbican Theatre, Dreamgirls, Savoy Theatre) are reprising their roles as Zach and Cassie which they played to great critical acclaim at Curve in 2021. Dennis visits the L.A. home of his friend Matt Zarley for Listening Party of the songs from Matt's newest project 11 O'Clock Number, a musical video project about a man who harnesses the power of musical theater songs to help him cope with lost love, losing his mother and the stresses of the pandemic. Matt talks about where the idea originated from, how working on the project helped keep him sane during the COVID lockdown and how he approached the vocals as if he was, in his words, “never going to sing again.” Matt also discusses why he chose each of the 12 tracks: “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman, “Still Hurting” from The Last Five Years, “With You” from Ghost, “I'm Not That Girl” from Wicked, “I'd Give My Life For You” and “I Still Believe” from Miss Saigon, “Take Me Or Leave Me” from Rent, “He Used To Be Mine” from Waitress, “The Human Heart” from Once On This Island, “Anything But Lonely” from Aspects of Love, “I'm Here” from The Color Purple and “What I Did For Love” from A Chorus Line. Other topics include: Broadway curtain calls, stage door memories, baring almost all in Broadway Bares, the show that got away, his decades long friendship with Billy Porter and why he loves to sing. www.mattzarley.com

How did a major ‘80s talent just … disappear? We answer that question and discuss the cultural impact of the 1980 musical Fame, which is like a blueprint for our American Idol-inspired, TikTok-addled moment. The Alan Parker movie may be remembered for its kick-ass theme song (and lesser TV adaptation), but the film holds up, kinetic and dark and deeply ambivalent about a career in the arts. Also, both Sarah and Nancy were obsessed with it. Nancy tells us about a doxxing controversy in Portland among black-bloc activists, who are angling for their own kind of fame. Then we discuss Ben Smith's story on disgraced novelist Junot Diaz, including what it means to “forcibly kiss” someone (we both know from experience). In the subscriber-only bonus content, we come to different conclusions about the new Hulu series “Fleishman Is In Trouble,” though we both agree the show runner and author of the novel, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, is one of the best cultural observers out there. Also: The movie that made Sarah love going to the movies again, and Nancy discovers a new author-love. Barry and Abigail discuss Songs About Jane by Maroon 5 and sample “leftover” beers from previously reviewed breweries: Eau Melon from Intracoastal Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida; Fall Shakecation from Mastry's Brewing Co. in St. Pete Beach, Florida; and Double Vanilla Scoop Shake from 3 Sons Brewing Co. in Dania Beach, Florida. Abigail and Barry recognized similarities in the stories told in This Love and Twice as Hard by The Black Crowes. Abigail compared the chorus of The Sun to some of the lyrics in What I Did For Love from the musical A Chorus Line. The imagery in Must Get Out reminded Abigail of Love Comes Tumbling Down by Matt Nathanson. Double Vanilla Scoop Shake was a collaboration with Mikkeller, a brewery based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and featured Mostra Coffee (based in San Diego, California) as an ingredient. I'm very excited to present my latest deep house podcast – Deep Spring House, Part 1. I think for most DJs, sticking to just one sound can get a bit boring. For me, deep house is what I listen to when I'm not in a club… when I need to think on long car rides… when I'm sitting around a friend's pool on a lazy weekend afternoon. Deep house has increasingly become my passion project and I've been working on this latest set for quite a while… in-between other gigs and projects. The BPM on this one varies from 120 – 124 in sections, but it never gets above. It's a full two hours long and I have a Part 2 almost ready to record that's equally as long – there's just too much great deep house out there not to share it! Please share this podcast on social media if you enjoy it. I'd love to be able to play this sound out live more in the future! I almost titled this latest Podcast "Brrrr, it's cold in here…." in honor of my east coast brethren, but let's face it: it's really not that cold in LA… like, ever. I'm back from my whirlwind tour of ski resorts – I've been on the road for the past 5 weekends from Aspen to Park City to Whistler to Tahoe – and I finally had some time to get my latest Podcast recorded. It's definitely my most circuit sounding 'cast to date, although it ends with a classic house sound that I love so much. I'll have another Podcast (that I'm very excited about!) coming out within the next two weeks – my 3rd deep house venture, "Deep Winter Soul, Part 2." In the meantime, skip… run…snowboard… dance to… and enjoy this bad boy. I'll be back in Vegas at Share Nightclub on Friday for this long upcoming President's Day weekend. Hello Fellow Music Lovers, It's that time of year again – the holidays. It can be an amazing time to be with family and loved ones, but for many, it can also be a very depressing and trying time of year. I hope that every one of you can use the power of music to try to make it through any tough times you may be experiencing. And also, use music's inherent joy as a tool for celebration. I'm excited that my podcast has finally started to take off – since November 1st it's had over 10,000 downloads! DJing can be a very lonely road that requires a lot of sacrifice. To anyone listening (or actually reading this), your support is what's getting me through. I recorded this latest podcast about 4 times before finalizing on this tracklisting. I have 30 more tracks that I wanted to include in this month's. I wanted it be perfect. Of course, it's not. There's no way anything can be perfect. There's one transition here that makes my own ears bleed. But I did the best job I could do and I hope you enjoy it. I look forward to playing for you much more in 2015! - DJ Blacklow Upcoming Gigs: Dec. 19th - The Horn, West Hollywood (8:30 – 11:30 p.m.) Dec. 21st - The Horn, West Hollywood (3 – 7 p.m.) Dec. 31st – La Grand Fete New Years Eve, Hacienda, Palm Springs Jan. 31st – Whistler Gay Ski Week, Friday Aprés-Ski event Jan 24th – Event TBA Feb. 5th - 8th - ELEVATION: Tahoe Gay Ski Week Feb. 22nd – SIZE Sundays, Here lounge, West Hollywood The Tracklist: (Intro) "Christmastime for the Jews," Saturday Night Live feat. Get ready for some well-deserved righteous fury! This week, we sit down with the delightful Langan Kingsley (UCB’s Beige, What I Did For Love, and Langan Dice Kingsley: The Dicewoman Cometh) to chat about 3 artists you might want to punch in the face regardless of your political affiliation. Podcast licky boom boom down! We’re back with the amazing Michael Kayne (UCB’s What I Did For Love) and we’re talking about self-love, Charlotte hornet starter jackets and confusing Do Not Disturb and Dungeons and Dragons. It’s pretty cool, but not as cool as Jaheem Jones. Winston’s pick: The Divinyls – I Touch Myself Alden’s […]
The show takes a detour from positivity to discuss what can only be referred to as the Birdemic of comic books! Time travel, future ninjas, inexplicable fighting, poor spatial relations, Pottery Barn, what doesn’t this mini-series have? A reason for existing. It doesn’t have a reason for existing. Listen and find out if this mini is so bad it’s… nah, it’s just so bad. But no body-shaming, y'all! This mini-series can be purchased in the trade paperback X-Force: The Legend Returns. As a point of reference, you can read about Birdemic on Wikipedia. Zhubin Parang is a writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He can also be seen performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre with the sketch team Charlemagne and improvising in the show What I Did For Love.
