Creating a Company Identity That Transforms Customer Experience Shep Hyken interviews Laura Richard, Principal at Level5 Strategy and one of the 2023 Woman Leaders in Consulting. She talks about the essence of branding and its role in customer experience, employee engagement, and business growth. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: What is a brand promise? What is the role of branding in enhancing the customer experience? How can businesses define their brand to impact customer relationships meaningfully? How does empowering employees align with a company's brand promise? Why is it important for employees to share the same values as the brand they work for? Top Takeaways: A brand promise is a company's commitment to its customers, defining what they can expect every time they interact with the brand. It is the guiding principle that all the decisions of an organization are centered on. A brand true to its promise creates value, builds trust, and fosters long-lasting relationships that benefit the customer and bring financial success to the business over time. Understand what matters most to the customers you want to build a relationship with. Know what they want to get and how they want to feel as a result of engaging with the brand. In a competitive market, a strong brand sets a company apart from competitors and creates an emotional connection with customers. For example, Nike empowers its customers with the motto "Just Do It," and Patagonia focuses on sustainability. Employees are essential in upholding the brand promise. When a company clearly defines its brand promise and values, it can attract employees who naturally resonate with those principles. Companies should identify which touchpoints are "table stakes," meaning basic expectations that must be met, but not necessarily exceeded. They should also focus their resources on the "moments of truth," the interactions that emotionally impact customers and can significantly deepen relationships. Plus, Shep and Laura discuss how convenience and consistency drive loyalty. Tune in! Quote: "When people hear the word brand, they think of the logo, tagline, or marketing campaigns. But a brand truly is the company's identity, the common set of truths the organization needs to deliver to create value for its customers and employees." At first, Reina-Flor Okori didn't know she had this world-class talent but when she was 13 and her sports teacher first came to her, asking her if she'd be interested to join a competition, the first thing she said was... "I don't even have a pair of shoes." To which he replied, "Don't worry, just run." And she did. She ran as fast as she could and won the competition. This was the start of her career - a career that has brought her to multiple countries all around the world as an Olympian athlete. Now that she has retired from the sports arena, she made her way to a whole new space - coaching international businesses, executives, and athletes to redefine the new psychology of winning and leading, using her sports legacy and African soul blueprint. Kim Scott, bestselling author and CEO coach, talks with Jesse about her new book Just Work and her New York Times Bestselling book Radical Candor along with the experiences and lessons that moved her to write. She talks about her lifelong love of writing and the value of storytelling in helping change behaviors. Kim reflects on the connected nature of her writing and executive coaching and on her philosophies on being an engaged professional advisor. Kim shares specific and moving examples of how she learned to care personally for people while also challenging them directly, and how caring personally and challenging directly became the basis for her Radical Candor. She also discusses how leaders can foster the right mix of meaningful debate and clear decision making, Kim speaks openly about the discovery of some of her own biases, and how that exploration and her conversations with underrepresented-minority colleagues and their experiences became the motivation for writing Just Work. She even shares a secret she learned about identical twins early on in parenthood. How do I give critical feedback without damaging my relationships? What is radical candor? How can a leader be caring while also pushing for high achievement? How can we foster a culture of healthy, productive debate in order to drive better decision making? How can we achieve a more just and productive work environment? Guest Bio:Kim Scott is the author of Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity and co-founder of the company Radical Candor. Kim was a CEO coach at Dropbox, Qualtrics, Twitter, and other tech companies. She was a member of the faculty at Apple University and before that led AdSense, YouTube, and DoubleClick teams at Google. She's also managed a pediatric clinic in Kosovo and started a diamond-cutting factory in Moscow. She lives with her family in Silicon Valley.Building Blocks:What skill or activity or habit is essentially you? Write about what it is and why it's essentially *you*. Maybe you're a surfer and surfing is not just your way of staying in shape and in balance, but of completely escaping the terra firma that anchors you to the day-to-day and inspires you to think of each day anew. Maybe, like Kim, you're a writer - and you have your own ways of using the written word to relax, reflect or reason with yourself. Or it could be art, music, building and repair … or really anything at all. Just take 10 minutes and write out what it is about this skill or activity or habit that's absolutely essential to you and give yourself gratitude for having discovered it and for living it. If you can't put your finger on anything specific, talk to two or three people who know you well and see if they can help you discover something hidden in plain sight or find a passion that you can make your own.Helpful Links:In addition to Radical Candor, she is the author of three novels and the forthcoming leadership book Just Work: Get Sh*t Done, Fast & Fair, available March 16, 2021, from St. Martin's Press. The Radical Candor organization: https://www.radicalcandor.com/Kim's website: https://kimmalonescott.com/Kim on Twitter: @kimballscottKim's 2017 interview with Kara Swisher: https://www.vox.com/2017/4/13/15295070/transcript-kim-scott-book-radical-candor-live-onstage-recode-decodeKim at Hubspot's Inbound Conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj9GLeNCgm4

Female entrepreneurship — A truly successful, inventive, African (woman) and tech entrepreneur Arlene Mulder (Entrepreneur | WeThinkCode and BiB | Co-Founder) I first met Arlene when she reached out to me about a crazy idea; establish an entity that could identify and truly uplift disadvantaged (even uneducated) humans by giving them a free shot at becoming a skilled computer programmer. Since those early stage discussions she launched 'WeThinkCode' which did exactly this and has already transformed the lives of over ONE THOUSAND individuals...and continues to increment this today. The impact of that vision is probably one of the most successful (and impactful) startup stories in the South African ICT sector! Women leadership! Obviously she was on my list of incredible woman to showcase this season. Her history and the challenges she outlines, specifically related to female tech entrepreneurship, are revelatory! This discussion allowed me to ask her the dumb-guy questions and her reverts every male will find valuable! If you’re a woman thinking of venturing into the startup scene, Arlene shares very useful insights. Arlene is launching another startup; BiB (see link below) and she once again articulates the related conviction - inspirational - can’t wait to see what this does for undiscovered African authors and creative talent. Natalia is a teacher of 20 male students at a private British school. She continues working during the pandemic through Zoom. In her honesty she finds teaching from home highly demanding with gathering material, checking learning guides, and doing classes. It has extended her work hours from ending at 4:30 pm to now as late as 10:00PM. Natalia enjoys reading and cooking as coping mechanisms during quarantine. She also loves music and connects with her father, singing while he plays guitar through Zoom. This helps her keep a human connection with the ones she loves. What gives her hope during the virus is that people will stay at home as much as possible. Natalia especially enjoys cooking nutritious foods and proudly shares them on her Instagram account: @lapocimadelanatita. The economy of Chile is suffering dramatically from the COVID-19 situation, especially as the country is a popular tourist area. There is no tourism right now in Chile, the restaurants and beaches are closed. Natalia states some tourists still try to come despite warnings, to the frustration of residents. Social outbursts are happening in Chile due to high prices of products such as facial masks and basic foods. There have already been social outbursts in Chile before the pandemic. People want to take to the streets and protest paying for education, inequality, public healthcare, and the treatment of elderly health, her country has been fighting for these issues since last October. She believes the government is not handling the crisis well and confusing people with what to do during quarantine. In Santiago, people must print passes to leave their homes, however due to poor Internet, people leave their homes without one. Her country is expecting to have to be quarantined until the end of May. Chile has about 5,000 people with the Corona virus, with about 300 more cases daily.
