Screenwriter and producer Zack Ford is one cool dude. Not only has he written a zillion scripts (if you want to know how many, you have to listen), but he also ran for mayor of Skaneateles, NY. But what's better than that, you ask? It's the unbelievably ballsy thing he did when his back was against the wall and quitting was not an option. Zack Ford is a New York-based screenwriter who sold his first screenplay right out of New York University's Tisch School of Arts. The screenplay, originally entitled Scribbleface, would become Scar 3D, the first stereoscopic 3D horror film. Zack's film, Watcher, premiered at Sundance 2022 and was recently purchased by IFC Films for theatrical and VOD distribution. Directed by Chloe Okuno and starring Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman, Watcher is about a young American woman who moves into an apartment with her fiancé in Bucharest, Romania, only to be tormented by the feeling that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in an adjacent building. This all happens while a serial killer is terrorizing the city.  What you will learn: What first sparked Zack's interest in screenwriting at age 6, how he wrote his first screenplay at age 12, entered a screenplay in the Nicholl screenwriting competition at age 16, and sold his first screenplay right out of NYU.  How Zack struggled in the industry after his first produced film, Scar 3D, was panned by critics, inspiring him to hack into Hollywood by creating a fake agency and submit screenplays under pen names. Zack's Script Magazine article about this journey is linked under Resources below. How Watcher finally got produced, years after writing it, after being optioned multiple times, going into production, and then being shut down due to covid, before finally getting produced during the pandemic in Romania.  Zack describes his work flow and writing process, which typically results in six completed screenplays per year.   How Zack's approach to outlining has evolved over the years.  Where Zack would like to see himself professionally over the next few years.   What projects Zack is working on and is attached to in 2022.   Resources: Zack's Website (Barbaric Media), IMDB, Instagram, and Twitter  Barbaric Media Instagram How I Hijacked Hollywood or: How To Sell A Screenplay: https://scriptmag.com/breaking-in/how-i-hijacked-hollywood

Rules of the Game: The Bolder Advocacy Podcast

On this episode, we celebrate Pride month with a discussion about the fight for equality at the ballot, in legislatures and the courts. From Stonewall to Obergefell and beyond, nonprofits have stood center stage as key advocates.    The pod team for this episode  Zack Ford  Tim Mooney  Natalie Ossenfort    Milestones  1961: Illinois becomes first state to decriminalize homosexuality  1969: Raid of Stonewall Inn (NYC)  1973: Lambda Legal becomes the first legal organization created specifically to fight for gay rights, and Maryland becomes first state to legislatively ban same-sex marriage  1978: Inspired by Harvey Milk, Gilbert Baker designs the first rainbow flag as a symbol of pride  1996: Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) signed into law by President Clinton, banning federal recognition of same-sex marriage  1998: Murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming makes national news. His killers are later sentenced to life in prison  2009: President Obama signs into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act  2011: Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell  2013: U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Windsor strikes down part of DOMA, paving the way for legally-married, same-sex couples to receive federal benefits  2015: U.S. Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges holds that 14th Amendment requires states to recognize same-sex marriages  2021: President Biden issues executive order repealing former administration's ban on transgender Americans joining the military    Nonprofit advocates and their work    Recent Developments / Coming Soon...  During the 87th Legislative session, nonprofit advocates in TEXAS successfully defeated SB 29, which would have banned transgender student athletes from competing on sports teams based on their gender identity. Local nonprofits like the Texas Freedom Network and Equality Texas led the charge in advocating against the bill alongside several other incredible nonprofits. While it's possible the bill may be revived during a later legislative session, there is much to celebrate for now.  ARKANSAS recently passed a new law (one of the first of its kind in the nation) that bans gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. The ACLU recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of four families and two doctors, who argue that the law is unconstitutional and that it should be struck down so that all children have access to medically necessary care.  Any day now, the United States SUPREME COURT is expected to release a decision in the case of Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, which will decide the constitutionality of a Philadelphia ordinance that bars discrimination based on sexual orientation. A legal challenge against the ordinance was brought by a Catholic foster agency that lost its contract with the city as a result of the nondiscrimination policy. The agency says that the policy violates its First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and speech.    Resources  LGBTQ Advocacy Toolkit  The Work for LGBTQ Equality Marches On by Leslie Barnes  Learn more about Daniel Quasar's redesigned Pride flag

He mainly preys on men made vulnerable by addiction and homelessness. Using the bait of narcotics, money. And shelter, the defendant lures these vulnerable victims to his home. From his home, in a position of power, Buck manipulates his victims into participating in his sexual fetishes. These fetishes include supplying and personally administrating dangerously large doses of narcotics to his victims. Bucks aggressive and malevolent behavior led to the death of two men in Buck's apartment, Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean. Not deterred by the senseless deaths of Moore and Dean, the defendant nearly killed a third victim last week. The defendant's predatory acts and conscious disregard for life must be stopped.” We discuss his story and the breaking news around it with Zack Ford, founder of Fording the River Styx newsletter, and former editor of Think Progress. Part two: A prank call I made in 2010. I called sex advice expert Dan Savage host of the Savage Love podcast. I actually called in character, as Marvin Bloom. Mavin asked about struggles with anal sex. Dan took the call and aired it on Ep 202 of Savage Love Podcast. And Part three: a sound slice--The Path train from NJ to NYC Bubble&Squeak is a podcast with uncanny sounds, funny interludes, and stories—most weird, many true. Created by Peterson Toscano and for his friend, Christine, who tells him she gets nervous hearing most podcasts. The theme song is Worthless by The Jellyrox from the Bang & Whimper album. You also heard Silent Symphony by Eleventyseven from the Sugarfist album and Off the Rails by the Pulses from their album Fast Feeling. All from Rock Candy Recordings You can find these songs on iTunes, Spotify, of wherever you listen to music. Mike Pence and Donald Trump are creating an epidemic of Christian Dominionism in our military. Generals inside YOUR Pentagon are now being encouraged to spread the false doctrine that America is a Christian nation that must be ruled by Christian soldiers. We talk again to Mikey Weinstein, founder and leader of The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). MRFF is a watchdog group and advocacy organization founded in 2005 to "ensure that members of the United States Armed Forces receive the Constitutional guarantee of religious freedom to which they are entitled by virtue of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment."  We also talk with Mikey's wife, Bonnie Weinstein, co-founder of MRFF and author of "When Christians Break Bad: Letters from the Insane, Inane, and Profane (MRFF Letters)." On Wednesday, August 7 news broke that Stephen Ross, a real estate developer who happens to be a majority owner of Equinox health clubs and Soul Cycle indoor cycling studios, was hosting a fundraiser for Donald Trump at $250,000 per plate (see CNN story HERE). Equinox and Soul Cycle are two brands built on inclusivity and diversity with a large percentage of membership coming from the LGTBQ+ community; when the membership found out that their money was going to a major fundraiser for Trump, #boycottequinox and #boycottsoulcycle became trending hashtags on Twitter. Stephen Ross has the right to spend his money however he wants which includes making contributions to any politician he chooses; however, his customers also have the right to spend their money where they choose. On this episode of All About Fitness I'm joined by Zack Ford, a writer who covers the Trump administration for ThinkProgress as well as publishing his own newsletter on LGTBQ+ issues - Fording the River Styx - which covered the story HERE. Zack shares his insights on why so many members of the community feel betrayed. In addition, Dr. Natalia Petrzela, an Associate Professor of American History at the New School in NYC and co-host of the Past-Present podcast, makes a return to provide her unique insights into the consumer reaction, the boycott and whether it really will make an impact on the company. This is a fascinating discussion about the reaction to the owner of a fitness brand supporting a politician who has actively marginalized many consumers of his brand.
