Benjamin was born and raised in the city of Aarhus in Denmark and graduated from the MFA Cinematography program at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. Here Benjamin received the Ethel Poirier Award for excellence in cinema. His thesis film Slut, which he shot for Chloe Okuno, was awarded at numerous film festivals and earned him an award for Best Cinematography at the HollyShorts Film Festival. Benjamin's DP work includes the acclaimed feature film Watcher, reuniting with director Chloe Okuno, a thriller about an American woman in Bucharest who believes she is being stalked by a serial killer. More recently, Benjamin shot Pet Sematary: Bloodlines produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Lindsey Beer, as well as the comedy Maybe Baby, and the documentary, Being Human.
Today on the show we have writer/director Chloe Okuno.Chloe is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a masters degree from the American Film Institute Conservatory. There she received the Franklin J. Shaffner Fellow Award, and directed the award-winning horror short film SLUT.Her recent work includes writing a remake of “Audrey Rose” for Orion Pictures and writing and directing a segment of the anthology series V/H/S/94. She's the director of this year's Sundance feature film Watcher.Julia joins her husband when he relocates to his family's native Romania for a new job. Having recently abandoned her acting career, she finds herself frequently alone and unoccupied. One night, people-watching from her picture window, she spots a vague figure in an adjacent building, who seems to be looking back at her. Soon after, while alone at a local movie theater, Julia's sense of being watched intensifies, and she becomes certain she's being followed — could it be the same unknown neighbor? Meanwhile, a serial killer known as The Spider stalks the city.Below is the story of making The Watcher from Chloe's POV.In making “Watcher,” I wanted to capture a kind of constant, uncomfortable dread that accompanies many women throughout their lives- one that is expressed through the character of Julia. Julia moves into this apartment building with her husband and quickly begins to believe she is being watched. She recognizes that the Watcher is a threat. She feels it very clearly- even if it's difficult to articulate the extent of that threat to the people around her. It's a situation that's probably quite familiar to most women. We experience the world in a different way than men and then when we try to express that experience, we're often doubted- written off as paranoid, irrational, or overly sensitive… which in turn can make us begin to doubt ourselves. This has always been at the core of a story that in other ways has evolved greatly since I was first hired to direct it in 2017. Initially, the script was set in New York City, but when it became clear that we would be shooting the movie in Romania, I decided to rewrite it to take place in Bucharest. There are times as a filmmaker where practical limitations end up being creatively very freeing- unlocking something great when you're willing to embrace the unexpected. This was one of those times.Suddenly, Julia's experience as a foreigner in this new city heightens all her other feelings of unease and uncertainty. She finds herself increasingly isolated- largely unable to speak the language and therefore alienated from everyone around her. There were of course natural (sometimes uncomfortable) parallels shooting the movie on location in Romania: unable to speak the language, oftentimes sequestered in a hotel room amidst the raging pandemic, and occasionally fighting against the doubt that surrounds you as a woman working in a male dominated profession. Fortunately, life didn't fully imitate art. I finished the movie without any nightmarish descent into Watcher-style darkness, content with the hope that all of the tension found its way on screen. The filmmakers I admire are the ones who are able to create a language for emotion through their craft, translating what they feel into a form that other people can see and experience for themselves. For Watcher I was inspired by the work of David Fincher, Sofia Coppola, Satoshi Kon, Roman Polanski, Krzysztof Kieslowski, and Mary Harron- filmmakers who have excelled at translating fear, loneliness, and alienation. The hope is always that there will be someone else who can empathize- telling stories so that we can take comfort in the recognition of ourselves in others. As a person filled with seemingly endless anxieties, making films is the best- and possibly the only- way I've found to confront them. I've done my best to portray them honestly in this film, and I can only hope that those who have experienced similar fears and anxieties will find solace in the knowledge that they are not alone. Enjoy my conversation with Chloe Okuno. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement

Hosted on Acast.

We're talking about Tokyo Drift (and just about every other movie and every actor and director) with Alex Jacobs! After a quick reminder to vote on the 2 Fast 2 Forever Hall of Fame (cageclub.me/bracket), we open mail that lets us know we get cars wrong a lot before running into a traffic jam on a boat in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (20:55). Then, Alex joins us to talk about Tokyo Drift, his favorite Fast and Furious movie (36:35). He talks about crafting the Drift Date sleepwave for Racer Trash, his main issue with where the franchise has gone (and the way to fix it), and a new plan to spread the Teriyaki Boyz gospel. We also talk about whether or not Fast & Furious is still an "underdog" at the box office, F&F inclusions in Racer Trash films, and an abundance of nail-based metaphors in Tokyo Drift. There's an exciting twist in the character game! Watcher is a psychological thriller about a young actress, Julia, who has just moved to Romania from the U.S. with her boyfriend. A serial killer is on the loose in the city, and Julia begins to feel like she is being followed and watched from the apartment across the street. She has trouble convincing her boyfriend and the police that she's being stalked, and the film builds on her increasing sense of dread. Director Chloe Okuno and DP Benjamin Kirk Nielsen first met at American Film Institute, and collaborated on their thesis film, a short horror movie called Slut. They both believe in extensive organization, preparation, shotlisting and planning for their projects. Chloe was hired to direct Watcher in 2017, and it took some time to get the movie off the ground. They ended up shooting in Romania during the summer of 2021 under strict COVID protocols. Chloe liked that the script was a simple thriller that could be told from one character's point of view. Chloe and Benjamin looked at Rosemary's Baby, Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, and David Fincher films Seven and Gone Girl as references to impart the sense of terror Julia feels. Benjamin wanted to find a simple, straightforward way to portray Julia's isolation in a foreign city as her fear escalates. He chose to start with longer camera focal lengths and longer shots, then progressively move closer and closer as the Watcher creeps closer and closer to Julia. Watcher premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and is currently playing in theaters. https://www.watchermovie.com/ Chloe Okuno: Twitter @cokuno_san Benjamin Kirk Nielsen: http://benjaminkirk.dk/ Instagram: @b_kirk Find out even more about this episode, with extensive show notes and links: http://camnoir.com//ep172/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: www.hotrodcameras.com Sponsored by DZOFilm: https://www.dzofilm.com/ The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean something isn't really happening. That's the premise behind the new film “Watcher,” which just opened in theaters as director Chloe Okuno teams up with “It Follows” star Maika Monroe for a thriller that feels like something that should have Alfred Hitchcock's name attached to it. In addition to “Watcher” opening in theaters, David Cronenberg's latest film called “Crimes of the Future” is also being released with the reception to this latest movie mixed somewhere between a masterpiece and an all-out gore fest that had some viewers leaving the theater in disgust. Plus we discuss what happens with "Scream 6" without Neve Campbell. On the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we review the new film 'Watcher,' 'Scream 6' moving on without Neve Campbell and David Cronenberg's latest film and legacy...

We break down our first impressions of Chloe Okuno's Watcher (2022), a somber, multi-layered horror thriller starring Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman.
Discussion Episode: Favorite Movies About Being Watched Pod favorite, Maika Monroe is back this weekend in Chloe Okuno’s Watcher. As per usual, she’s being stalked by something or someone of a creepy nature. This gave Dave the terrible idea to … Read More →
Director: Chloe Okuno Screenwriter: Zachary Ford, Chloe Okuno Starring: Maika Monroe, Karl Glusman, Madalina Anea, Chloe Okuno, Burn Gorman, Gabriela Butuc, Tudor Petrut Runtime: 1 hour 36 minutes SXSW Synopsis: set in the midst of a citywide panic over an active serial killer, a young woman moves into a new apartment with her partner and is tormented by the feeling that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in an adjacent building. (This review was originally part of MTR's 2022 festival coverage.) ** Watcher, director Chloe Okuno's feature debut, follows Julia (Maika Monroe) and Francis (Karl Glusman), a young couple just arrived in Bucharest, Romania for Francis' new job. Julia doesn't speak Romanian or know the country. Almost immediately, she finds herself adrift in the city with an increasingly unavailable husband. She spends most days listening to language lessons and otherwise wandering around at loose ends. Francis does little to help his wife adjust. He's quick to speak in Romanian, cutting her out of conversations by often failing to translate. He makes no attempt to orient her in the city or their new lives. The first night in their home, she notices the silhouette of a man standing at a window in the building across from theirs. He appears to be looking at her. Days later, in an attempt to convince herself she's imagining things, Julia waves when she sees him. The man raises a hand and waves back. If this setup has a decidedly Hitchcockian feel, have no fear you're not imagining it. The hints of voyeurism and Rear Window vibes echo thematically throughout the film. There's even a very meta moment early on where Julia can't shake the feeling of being stalked inside a theater while watching Stanley Donen's Charade. Okuno plays with visual perspectives with overhead shots, shots from below, and three-quarter angles to build an ever growing specter of doubt in what Julia's actually experiencing. Her approach invites the audience to transfer their own anxieties and fears onto the main character. It's not unique but unlike its predecessor films in the genre (think Hereditary or Repulsion), Okuno uses Julia's seeming aimlessness to credibly make room for doubt without completely leaving the character as an empty cipher. In Monroe's capable hands, Julia's got depth in her distressed gaze. Her growing listlessness and lack of focus aid in distorting time and recollection. Paranoia is self-replenishing. Once something trips that switch, it's like a constant itch at the base of your skull; a twitch between your shoulder blades. If the feeling lingers long enough, you can find yourself practically jumping at shadows, flinching away from people, and avoiding places where you can't put your back to a wall. Thread that paranoia into a story centering a woman convinced she's being watched (and possibly followed) who can't get anyone to take her seriously and you've got the perfect nightmare fuel. As Julia's sense of being followed increases, Francis begins to fully discount her unsettled feelings, casting her further adrift. It doesn't help that there's an actual serial killer, called the Spider, preying on women in the city. Pretty soon, she's sleeping poorly and coming off as a blurry eyed hysteric to the people around her. So when her only friend, Irina (Madalina Anea), goes missing from the building; no one's willing to take her seriously. Whenever she tries to articulate what she's feeling, it comes out sounding hesitant and unconvincing. To others, the situation begins to look more and more like an unhinged American woman targeting a solitary local man. Monroe's performance convincingly pushes you into questioning her reliability as a narrator. As incidents and inexplicable encounters keep happening even Julia begins to doubt herself. But if you, like me, automatically say, “oh no” whenever you see Burn Gorman's name on a cast list; then you know, Julia should definitely trust her gut.

Zack Ford is a New York-based screenwriter who sold his first screenplay right out of New York University's Tisch School of Arts. The screenplay, originally entitled Scribbleface, would become Scar 3D, the first stereoscopic 3D horror film. Zack's film, Watcher, premiered at Sundance 2022 and was recently purchased by IFC Films for theatrical and VOD distribution. Directed by Chloe Okuno and starring Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman, Watcher is about a young American woman who moves into an apartment with her fiancé in Bucharest, Romania, only to be tormented by the feeling that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in an adjacent building. This all happens while a serial killer is terrorizing the city. What you will learn: What first sparked Zack's interest in screenwriting at age 6, how he wrote his first screenplay at age 12, entered a screenplay in the Nicholl screenwriting competition at age 16, and sold his first screenplay right out of NYU. How Zack struggled in the industry after his first produced film, Scar 3D, was panned by critics, inspiring him to hack into Hollywood by creating a fake agency and submit screenplays under pen names. Zack's Script Magazine article about this journey is linked under Resources below. How Watcher finally got produced, years after writing it, after being optioned multiple times, going into production, and then being shut down due to covid, before finally getting produced during the pandemic in Romania. Zack describes his work flow and writing process, which typically results in six completed screenplays per year. How Zack's approach to outlining has evolved over the years. Where Zack would like to see himself professionally over the next few years. What projects Zack is working on and is attached to in 2022. Well Sundance 2022 has begun and so has our coverage. Today on the show we have writer/director Chloe Okuno. Chloe is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a masters degree from the American Film Institute Conservatory. There she received the Franklin J. Shaffner Fellow Award, and directed the award-winning horror short film SLUT. Her recent work includes writing a remake of “Audrey Rose” for Orion Pictures and writing and directing a segment of the anthology series V/H/S/94.She's the director of this year's Sundance feature film Watcher. Julia joins her husband when he relocates to his family's native Romania for a new job. Meanwhile, a serial killer known as The Spider stalks the city.Below iIn making “Watcher,” I wanted to capture a kind of constant, uncomfortable dread that accompanies many women throughout their lives- one that is expressed through the character of Julia. This was one of those times. Suddenly, Julia's experience as a foreigner in this new city heightens all her other feelings of unease and uncertainty. She finds herself increasingly isolated- largely unable to speak the language and therefore alienated from everyone around her. There were of course natural (sometimes uncomfortable) parallels shooting the movie on location in Romania: unable to speak the language, oftentimes sequestered in a hotel room amidst the raging pandemic, and occasionally fighting against the doubt that surrounds you as a woman working in a male dominated profession.Fortunately, life didn't fully imitate art. As a person filled with seemingly endless anxieties, making films is the best- and possibly the only- way I've found to confront them.I've done my best to portray them honestly in this film, and I can only hope that those who have experienced similar fears and anxieties will find solace in the knowledge that they are not alone. Enjoy my conversation with Chloe Okuno.

After a long hiatus, the V/H/S franchise of films is back with a new installment. Some say it is a reboot while others say it is a sequel, but either way, as an anthology film, with stories not necessarily related, it doesn't matter all that much. The new film had some of its talent taken away as they went off and were hired to direct the new Hellraiser film and the new Scream film, but others are back including Simon Barrett and Timo Tjahjanto. The new movie entitled V/H/S/94 has four new stories and some new talent too. First is the wrap around story entitled Holy Hell (written and directed by Jennifer Reeder) about a swat team that enters what appears to be a building owned by a suicide cult. Next up is Storm Drain (written and directed by Chloe Okuno). The next tale is by Simon Barrett entitled The Empty Wake. Following is Timo Tjahjanto's story entitled The Subject, and the last story is called Terror (written and directed by Ryan Prows). The film has been getting excellent reviews from critics and has a huge fan base that was excited to hear of the latest in the franchise. The movie appears on Shudder right now for all subscribers. Dark Discussions Podcast takes a look at this new movie and gives their thoughts on each part of the anthology.

We caught the world premiere of the latest installment into the V/H/S franchise, V/H/S/94, at this year's Fantastic Fest with most of the filmmakers, as well as producer Josh Goldblum, in attendance. The film features five new segments from Simon Barrett, Chloe Okuno, Ryan Prows, Jennifer Reeder, and Timo Tjahjanto, and takes viewers for a gory good ride that attempts to right the wrongs of the franchise's previous entry.
