Mary Anne Oglesby-Sutherly, the visionary Founder and Executive Director of Veranda Ministries, has added a new dimension to her impactful work in senior care with the release of her latest book, A Proactive Perspective in Dementia Care: A Relationship-Based Approach, on November 2, 2023. The book is now available in paperback and ebook version on Amazon. In her book, Oglesby-Sutherly draws upon her extensive experience as a certified dementia practitioner and her role as a leader in senior care advocacy. A Proactive Perspective provides a unique and empowering approach to dementia care, emphasizing the importance of proactive strategies in fostering meaningful relationships with individuals facing cognitive challenges. A Proactive Perspective invites readers to ponder a deeper meaning to personhood, challenge stigmas surrounding dementia, and celebrate enduring human connections. Oglesby-Sutherly encourages caregivers, family, and individuals involved in experiencing dementia to live a more vibrant and connected life with each other. Oglesby-Sutherly founded Veranda Ministries, an accredited non-profit organization offering dementia care, and The Veranda, a respite program for aging adults. Podcast producer, Sue Duffield, praises the relevancy and biblical necessity of “The Kingdom principle" as definitively described in scripture. According to Leviticus 19:32, to ‘Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God.' Mary-Anne says it best: 'Sadly, instead of a refuge to run to as we age, church has become more of a place to run from.' Something is horribly lost when our local church stops considering the aging members of their congregation as part of their community. Mary Anne Oglesby-Sutherly, and her diverse ministry of caring for those with dementia, teaches and facilitates churches, via conferences and outreaches on how to understand the need for congregations to embrace generational care and its benefits.”

A very difficult episode, but one that surely needs to be told. This situation is one family's struggle with when their loved ones need care in a community setting.  It's a hard decision. The word placement strikes fear in their hearts for many reasons. Since the recording of this episode, the Colonel, as you'll hear about, passed away within a few weeks of his placement. To be honest, there are thousands in this country with the same outcome. This is the tragedy of a healthcare system that gives little to no hope or direction when treatment is administered to someone with dementia. There has to be a better way than the massive amounts of medications to “combat bad behaviors and agitation.”  People living with dementia and dying from massive amounts of drugs not indicated for dementia need to stop. We need more voices to advocate for those with no voice. It's simply out of hand. This podcast episode makes no apologies for the blunt honest reaction to a system gone bad. It was literally “from dancing to dying”, in less than thirty days for the Colonel. www.theverandaministries.org

This is part two of Anthony Facello's difficult story. The value of having a POA (power of attorney) is of utmost in any family with a loved one. And if that loved one is suffering from dementia and is a mother of an only child, it's even more imperative. What makes Anthony's story even more tragic is the abuse his mother received from her second husband.  Making things worse, the cocktail of meds that were given to Anthony's mother, sent her to a tragic end, when indeed it didn't have to be that way. Sadly, it's not unusual in the realm of care for those with dementia. His mother wasn't afraid to die, and thankfully Anthony knew that his mother was dying. That was obvious. It was the goodbye that was the worst part. Thankfully, host Mary Anne Oglesby-Sutherly walked alongside Anthony with counsel and guidance during his most desperate of times. Listen to the heartache of a family caught up in a broken system, a relationship that on any given day was intense, and a son who found himself in that broken system trying to help find peace for his mom and himself. www.theverandaministries.org

How To Cut It in the Hairdressing Industry

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 30, 2019 60:39

I recently had the pleasure to connect at the British Hairdressing Awards 2019 with the celebrity, award winning and session hair stylist Louis Byrne. It was here where I first learned of his inspirational empowerment project, I Can, I Am, and I Will. I loved it so much, that I just had to bring him on to todays show. Completing our 3 week instalment series dedicated to mental health and wellbeing awareness within the hairdressing industry, we are to learn today on how Louis's life changing experiences led him through a process of understanding, acceptance, sobriety and self-care. It was during this big shift in his life that Louis says, "The positive mantras replayed over in my head with each beginning with I Can…, I Am… and I Will." Having 20 years of experience working at the top of his industry, Louis seemed to have it all. 4 years assisting Sam McKnight travelling the international fashion week circuit, styling editorials for the likes of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and L’Officiel, working on campaigns from Net-a-Porter to Nike, been the tour stylist for Ellie Goulding, the man behind the ‘quaff’ for Emma Willis, and the go-to hair stylist for an impressive number of actresses, models and musicians. However, the journey to reaching these heights wasn’t always plain sailing! Riding on a rollercoaster of working hard, playing hard and fast living to avoid facing his demons, culminated in a debilitating accident in 2018 when Louis broke his leg in 3 places. Forced to pause and take stock of his situation, Louis began a process of looking inwards. As Louis explains, "I had to face up to issues including the trauma and loss that had been plagued me since childhood, destructive behavioural traits and addiction that had affected me and those close to me deeply." Everyone of us has our own story to tell, including our own versions of the positive mantras beginning I Can, I Am and I Will. For Louis he focused his love for the art and expression of hair styling and considered the power of the connection between stylist and client. He realised the empowering and transformative effect this combination can have which goes beyond appearance alone, and this laid the foundation for the project that connects creativity to wellness, with a driving force of positivity. An ongoing project, todays podcast finishes with how you can become involved by sharing your own version of 'I Can, I Am and I Will' using the hashtag #icaniamandiwill. So lets all do this together as we head off into a new decade and era of self-discovery. Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!   A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions.   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. The Guilt Free Friday Interviews are a series of honest and inspiring conversations with those affected by guilt. In this episode, motivational speaker and author Shalini Bhalla-Lucas tells me her story of finding her soul mate, losing and then reconnecting with her family and dealing with the grief of losing both her husband and father in the space of 18 months.  This powerful story tells us a lot about how guilt can be involved alongside many other powerful emotions. Bio Shalini Bhalla-Lucas is an award-winning author, entrepreneur, speaker, teacher/trainer and the founder of Just Jhoom! She is also an accredited Mindfulness and Meditation teacher – teaching people highly-effective, proven techniques to help combat stress, anxiety and depression. She is currently training to be an End of Life Doula.  Shalini has performed all over the world and has had TV appearances on ITV’s Daybreak, Channel 4s Sunday Brunch and the BBC, as well as on numerous radio stations and podcasts. She has been featured in publications such as RED magazine, Top Sante and Dance Today, discussing physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing through dance and mindfulness.  In January 2017, Shalini set up the Jeremy Lucas Education Fund in Kenya in memory of her beautiful, kind husband Jeremy Lucas who passed away in 2016 after a two-year battle with cancer. The Fund is currently providing scholarships for 16 Samburu children for secondary and tertiary education.  Shalini self-published her first book “Always With You – A true story of love, loss…and hope” in July 2018. The memoir is about her personal battles with mental illness, the coping strategies she relied on to regain a positive mental state after severe depression, and the death of her husband. Shalini writes frankly about her experiences of love, bereavement, grief, depression and suicidal ideation, as well as her struggles with religion and Indian culture, and ends the book with a message of renewal, recovery and hope, and aspirations for the future. In October 2018 the book became a No 1 Amazon Bestseller.  “Online Dating @ 40 – The Nobheads, Nutjobs & Nice Guys” Shalini’s second book, a funny and candid account of the highs and lows of online dating, was published in February 2019. It is an honest personal account of a 40-something-year-old determined to 'live again' following the untimely death of her beloved husband and soulmate Jeremy.  In May 2019 Shalini was chosen from hundreds of women to be one of six inspirational women from the UK to be featured in the hair beauty company TRESemmé’s Power Your Presence Online and TV Masterclass. In the programme Shalini is featured alongside celebrity Emma Willis speaking about Being Positive, The Power of Thought and Building Resilience.  Shalini’s third book “Happiness! Is It Simply A Mindset Shift?” will be published in the autumn of 2019.  Shalini’s website: www.justjhoom.co.uk Facebook and Instagram @justjhoom

Inside My Wardrobe

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2019 42:00

How do we love ourselves? What does that look like? Do we FALL in love with ourselves romantically or is it something else? With all this talk about self love and mindfulness we scour book shelves and read articles endlessly trying to cram in some new practise so we feel better about our lives but I wonder, would we need all this if we truly loved ourselves? And if we did, how would that look?   So we embark upon a journey together in this 40 minute episode via knitting, a broken bone, a playground rhyme, bricks in back packs, neighbours, Shakespeare, a favourite wedding reading, imposter syndrome, Emma Willis, eschatological realism and snakes and ladders – this is a whistle stop tour around what love is and how we can love ourselves as we love others ….. Loving ourselves is surely accepting ourselves for who we are. Isn’t that how you love your partner? Your kids? Your friends and your neighbour? You’re not trying to change them, you love them as they are, where they are in their life, foibles and all – the question is, going back to Hazel’s original question, how do I love myself? I wonder if you already know how to love yourself – you’re just not doing it because you’ve got this other set of rules that you’re making yourself abide by – but they aren’t based on truth, they aren’t fair, they aren’t there to help you grow. You know I’ve talked about how the world is like a giant jigsaw puzzle and each of us has our own unique space to be exactly who we are – it’s not about being like someone else, or fitting in with the crowd, it’s about looking at the shape that we ARE and saying that it fits, that it works perfectly in its space. There is a term, Eschatological realism which is the belief that over time, we are gradually beginning the person we were born to be, that there is a better tomorrow, that you aren’t defined by the mistakes of your past, but actually as each day passes, you are getting closer to becoming your true self. So if we can learn to love ourselves in the way we are willing to love others, with kindness and patience, with hope, endurance and acceptance, we can allow ourselves to take that journey toward discovering ourselves. We know, through ancient wisdom, our ancestors, our grandparents, wherever you want to look – we KNOW that we become the better versions of ourselves over the passage of time, the trick is in allowing it to happen. Life becomes so much easier when you stop pretending that its easy – because it’s not easy, it’s like watching the death slide at the end of I’m a Celebrity, desperately trying to climb up a water slide with everything you could possibly think of being thrown at you from all angles and just as you think you’re nearly there, a jet of water knocks you off your feet and you slide all the way back to the beginning again – life is a game of snakes and ladders – that’s real life, right there, on a board game! The trick is in letting yourself play.
