The young but wise Lovie Simone is best known for “Selah and The Spades” and “The Craft: Legacy.” Now she stars in the hit Netflix series “Forever,” an adaptation of the Judy Bloom book. On this episode, she talks about the giant role music plays in her preparation, why having a Black hair & make-up person on set is crucial to work, “importance over relevance,” “quality over quantity,” her love of words “and the weight of each word,” the “accidental” way she and Michael Cooper Jr. built their “Forever” chemistry, plus much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

In this episode, I share a collection of stories behind SNAKE HANDLER, a large banner I made featuring a writhing white snake. It's really a three-part story about wrestling, specifically wrestling with identity, privilege, and role in the struggle for racial justice. I share personal reflections on understanding and confronting my privilege, recommending reading suggestions, sharing two strategies I use to address biases and hurtful statements, and encouraging us to take active roles in addressing racial inequality.Get more free resources with this episode with SEAMSIDE EXTRAS! Aerin Fogel was a consultant on the 21st century remake of the 1996 film, The Craft. It was her job to make sure the magic was real. The spells. The rituals. Years of practice have made her a go-to for occult matters. Basically she's the person every goth girl aspired to be in high school. And some of us, still aspire to be. She's also a musician and professional astrologer based in Toronto, who specializes in a form of channeling called Core Pattern Reading. If you have no idea what that last part means, I didn't either. In fact, I'm still not sure if I entirely get it, but I have friends who've had real breakthroughs after sessions. Aerin founded Venus Fest, a Toronto-based music festival she organized for seven years. When she makes music—which is all her life—she is Queen of Swords. Her latest album is Year 8. Paul Thomas Anderson may be one of the last American auteurs. The term, which means author in French, grew out of the French New Wave and eventually made its way to America by the 1960s where the director asserted control and authorship over his–and it often was his–films. The concept has come to represent a kind of rebellion against the corporate content machine, a lone, independent cowboy of authenticity in the arts. And yet today, while the theory is still around, it's difficult for a filmmaker to sustain commercial viability as a brand while the film industry finds itself shifting in the streaming age. On today's show, Ethan Warren, whose new book is The Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson: American Apocrypha, is in conversation with Tom Knoblauch about the changing landscape of American cinema, the legacy of Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed films like There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Boogie Nights, and what his influence on the medium might be going forward. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/riversidechats/support
Our trope this week dear Critters is that of witches, who we stan over at ScaryCrit. For this one, we're lighting a candle and opening the book to Robert Egger's 2015 folk-horror gem, The VVitch. From Egger's ardent direction when it came to historical authenticity, to Thomasin's plight and Jared's passion for good for her! stories, there's so much to conjure up while talking about this film: The actual factual history of witches being in direct opposition to patriarchy and the stringent ideals of men and church, what it means to be goaded into becoming that which you're accused of being, how the cauldron was dropped when it came to marketing, and how this film challenges expectations and perceptions of antagonists and happy endings—there's so much magic happening in today's episode. Our guest today is a triple threat. Actress, filmmaker, and writer, Zoe Lister-Jones, who made headways in 2017 with her all-female crew directorial debut, Band-Aid. The decision was inspired to foster new creative experiences amidst the staggering inequity on sets.A couple who can't stop fighting embarks on a last-ditch effort to save their marriage: turning their fights into songs and starting a band. The comedy-drama film, starring Zoe, Jesse Williams, and her New Girl co-star, Hannah Simone premiered at the 2017 Sundance Festival. Some of Zoe's most known acting roles include some of your favorite sitcoms like New Girl, Whitney, or Life In Pieces. I have watched Life in Pieces with my family many times and it remains a favorite. Zoe's love for performing and writing goes back to high school which set the foundation for a scholarship ride in NYU. Even though the film is what she's most known for now, Zoe has a background in music and theater. In 2009 she co-wrote and produced, her first screenplay, Breaking Upwards with Daryl Wein on a $ 15,000 budget. The film explores a young New York couple who, battling codependency, strategizes their own breakup. Operating on a thin budget like that turned the experience into a crash course or a production management Bootcamp in filmmaking for her and Daryl as described during our chat. A couple more production gigs later and she was ready for the director's chair. Last year, Zoe wrote, directed, and produced the sequel to The Craft (1996), a supernatural horror titled, The Craft: Legacy. A group of high school students forms a coven of witches.Wein and Zoe paired up again to bring a Sundance 2021 official selection cinematic experience to our isolated-covid-locked-down screens with what is described as a serene apocalyptic comedy, How It Ends. Liza (Zoe Lister-Jones) embarks on a hilarious journey through LA in hopes of making it to her last party before it all ends, running into an eclectic cast of characters along the way.It was chill and fun chatting about Zoe's indie filmmaking journey and navigating the minefields of live sets. Please enjoy my conversation with Zoe Lister-Jones.

Blessed be, and welcome to the sonic circle that is the Witchcast, friend - join Lucy for an episode that takes on some tricky questions Witches face - like whether Lightworker is a word we'd use to describe ourselves? What happens when we claim we only walk the path of Light? Are we in witchy denial? Lucy checks out the partly terrible, partly terrific trailer for the Craft: Legacy, and remains kinda sorta maybe hopeful about it, answers questions from listeners about working with artists when creating Oracle decks, and gets very excited about the forthcoming film The Witch of Kings Cross. This docu-drama is all about the true-life legend that is Rosaleen Norton and her daring, wild life as a witch and artist in 1950s and 60s bohemian Sydney. It's a story that had to be filmed! Finally, Lucy reads for you using the Blessed Be deck - a deck based upon the Old Ways, and the Celtic practise of offering blessings to ourselves, and to others. Wonderful Pagan music is by Laura Daligan, and Damh the Bard - Lucy could not get Waterfall out of her head for days, so now it can live in your head too! Waterfall by Laura Daligan from her EP, Between the Worlds. Imramma (A Soul Quest) by Damh the Bard from his album The Cauldron Born. Song of Awen by Damh the Bard from his album Herne's Apprentice. With gratitude and blessings to both Blue Angel and Kohli Tea for their continued sponsorship of the Witchcast. The intro music is "We Are One" by the band Nordic Daughter. On this episode of Parallel Fiction, Jeff and Heather break down two cult favorites for the Halloween season of 2020. Heather covers the 90s cult classic, The Craft, followed by Jeff who covers the graphic novel, The Crow. They give general synopses of the spooky cult classics, then share their analyses of each, along with recommendations for similar films and books you might enjoy if you like The Craft or The Crow. In case you didn't know, a cult classic consists of a dedicated, passionate fan base that forms an elaborate subculture. Directed by Andrew Flemming, The Craft isn't your traditional scary movie, but it's a dark, coming of age story of friendship among four young witches, played by Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True. A sequel to The Craft, called The Craft Legacy, is coming out at the end of October, so you'll definitely want to dive into The Craftbefore watching that. Heather notes the choice of camera techniques and costuming in the film (especially Sarah's), and then they both share their ideas of what might appear in the sequel. Heather also shares her candid thoughts on men writing from women's perspectives. Freaky fact: All the snakes (actually 3,000 of them) and bugs used in the movie were REAL. How creepy is that?! The Crow, written and illustrated by James O'Barr in the 80s, is a hyper violent and very visually stimulating novel about Eric, who returns from the dead to avenge his and his fiancée's murder at the hands of a street gang. The Crow was very emotionally draining for the author to create, as he draws from a personal tragedy regarding the loss of his fiancé, which can be seen in the book's illustrations. Jeff notes the witty style of dialogue, conflict, pacing, quotes, and themes that help you process the layers of the story, as well as the dynamic usage of black and white artwork. Freaky fact: The crow only exists to Eric, no one else in the book can hear the crow. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each cult classic, how The Crow and The Craft compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know your thoughts on these spooky Halloween favorites! Heather's Rating of The Craft: Very NiceJeff's Rating of The Crow: Super Nice – If you're into hyper violent comic books, this is a must-read! The Slumberettes talk about the 1996 classic and their feelings for the Craft: Legacy trailer. Also, a little bit of Halloween shenanigans.
Just in-time for this month's release of The Craft: Legacy (which we didn't realize when we recorded it), we're covering 1996's The Craft for a special bonus episode! For Episode 9 we talked about four horror movies that were all released after Scream came out in December 1996. The Craft was released a little earlier that year, so it gets its own minisode! This movie has developed quite a following in the years since its release, so we hope you enjoy our review as we delve into the soundtrack, the changes from the shooting draft of the script, and also the movie's relationship with actual wiccan practices. We had a great time discussing this movie, and thanks for listening!!
