In a world where skills gaps are widening and job demands are evolving at unprecedented rates, understanding how to gain a "skills advantage" is critical for organizations to stay competitive. In this episode, Anish Lalchandani, author of The Skills Advantage, delves into his insights on bridging skills gaps, building resilient teams, and preparing organizations for the future. Anish walks us through his approach, discussing how the right skills strategy can shift a team from good to exceptional and position L&D as a driver of business transformation. Whether you're a leader looking to upskill your team or an L&D professional aiming to create a sustainable skills strategy, this conversation is packed with actionable insights. KEY TAKEAWAYS The established approach to L&D is no longer enough. L&D needs to go beyond business alignment and take the lead in equipping our businesses to thrive in the future. You don´t have the wrong people, they have the wrong skills. Employees need to be convinced that upskilling benefits them and the business. A huge proportion of executive transitions fail, and we need to address this. What is going on in the market and industry helps you identify future skill needs. Use technology to help with your data analysis and become more agile. When you demonstrate impact, you get permission to do more. BEST MOMENTS “The established approach to L&D is no longer enough.” “Reskilling is a long-term game, start now.” “We need to hold ourselves accountable to actual upskilling and not just providing learning.” “You don´t have the wrong people, they have the wrong skills.” “The risk of relying on firing and hiring is extraordinary.” Anish Lalchandani Bio Anish Lalchandani is the author of the book ‘The Skills Advantage: A Human-Centered, Sustainable and Scalable Approach to Reskilling’. Having held leadership roles at leading firms like A.P. Moller Maersk (current), General Electric, Standard Chartered Bank and other organizations, he has developed extensive expertise in Talent, OD, Leadership and HR Strategy. In addition to being a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, he is also a certified professional coach and mentor to start-up founders. Several publications, including Economic Times, Thinkers360, LeadersHum and HRD, rate him as one of the top influencers in HR and the Future of Work. In this episode Steven talks with Jonathan Mason CFInstD who is the chair of Vector and sits on the boards of Air New Zealand and the University of Auckland Foundation. Jonathan talks about the importance of careful scrutiny of the financials of the organisation to keep it in a sound state and the key to protecting shareholder value. Ep. 83 Traci HoupapaTraci Houpapa is a company director and business advisor from New Zealand. But a simple scratching of the surface reveals a unique and inspiring story. Her early life influences could well have something to do with her Maori father who was very active in campaigns to return properties back into Maori management in the 1980s. As to her own career, she was advised to experience a wide range of occupations after high school before settling on a career... and that education was essential to her success. She sits on numerous Boards an Foundations. She is, amongst many other things, chair of the Federation of Maori Authorities, a Chartered Fellow of the NZ Institute of Directors, an advisor to Maori, Government, public and private sector organisations and has an unwavering commitment to advancing the interests of indigenous women in New Zealand. In the 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours, she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to business and Maori. In 2015, she won the Board and Management award at the New Zealand Women of Influence Awards. In 2016 she named as one of the BBC's 100 Most Influential Women in the World for that year. She has some great advice for life and career. And an optimism that we're heading in the right direction on a number of fronts including gender bias and racism.
In this episode Steven speaks to Giselle McLachlan, who describes herself as a down-to-earth governance and business adviser on a mission to help 1000 kiwi businesses to flourish through great governance. She is founder of Grounded Governance, Chair of AbacusBio, Councillor of Te Kaunihera Medical Council and has previously chaired the Audit Committee for the Institute of Financial Advisors and the Medical Council. Giselle says that boards need to be future-focused, and as part of this, need to have good succession planning. Directors need to be constantly evaluating their own performance and refreshing their governance skills on an ongoing basis. She also talks about boards increasingly being places where directors can bring their whole selves, not just their director personas and offers directors a challenge - stop looking at the paucity of time and start to think about how much time we do have and where we should give it. Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/3zSEp39 Across our already troubled world, there are big population changes afoot, with dramatically falling birth rates in some countries and rising in others, but all with increasing lifespans – virus and obesity notwithstanding – meaning changes in “old-age dependency ratio,” and a radical new world order in 80 years' time. This brings challenges for all nations, and for the financial sector, with the potential for fiscal strains, labour shortages, economic stagnation, and the certainty of increased spending on healthcare and pensions. Simon Culhane invites us to think of the challenges, and opportunities in the UK for wealth management, financial planning and capital markets. Speaker: Simon Culhane was appointed CEO of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment in May 2004, having previously worked both with a number of blue-chip financial companies and in Central Government. His previous role was at Deutsche Bank where he worked as Director, Chairman's Office, Global Investment Banking. For three years prior to this, Simon was Deputy Director, Prime Minister's Efficiency Unit, Cabinet Office where he was responsible for the Unit's work in a number of major Government Departments. Simon achieved his professional banking qualifications whilst in his early career with Lloyds Bank plc, undertaking a number of roles including Senior Group Manager, Retail Banking and in Chicago, USA. A Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, Simon was educated at St Paul's School London and the University of Surrey. He is married with four children and his interests include sailing and supporting AFC Wimbledon.

In 2019, John was recognized as one of HR's most influential thinkers by HR Magazine. John is the first Briton to have a career in the NBA. John is a Chartered Scientist, a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. He is a Research Fellow at the University of East London and his research interests are effective, inclusive leadership, building high-performing teams and organisational design that maximises productivity and human thriving in readiness for the future world of work. Notes: “Excellence is in the mundane.” The hours and hours of work when no one is watching. Effective feedback - If it's not developing them, it's not feedback. And feedback is never cruel. Ask, what can we learn from this? The evidence-based traits he shared about effective leadership “Promises have an enormous impact when kept by giants. And a devastating impact when broken. To keep these promises, unconditionally and persistently, is the duty and honor of being a giant.” "You can't be a part-time man of principle." There is a difference between elite teams and a group of elite individuals. We want to build elite teams. Look at how you reward people -- What gets measured, gets managed. Reward people for being great teammates. People must earn and maintain their job titles. Coaching leaders: Start at the end - What does great look like? Introspection - How well do you know yourself? Pragmatic - Measure real progress Introspective work - view yourself critically, but not cruelly "You need people around you to be truly candid and caring." John and his team take an analytical approach - "I have a geek squad and we analyze data." They use expertise to provide commentary on the data Feedback - It must be timely and effective. Do regular micro-appraisals. What made you think of that? What can we learn from this? If it's not developing them, it's not feedback Feedback is never cruel Mantra: "I promise to reject excuses and embrace discomfort." You can't skip to comfort... The Promises of Giants is the product of a lifetime spent observing and studying effective leadership - from accompanying his mother's visits to her dying patients to competing at the highest levels of professional sport, through two decades of management consulting with multinational corporations. These experiences have shown that everyone has the ability to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way. Everyone is a giant to someone...

In this episode, Lucinda talks to Mary Asante from HR Independents, about the role that HR plays in effective data protection, the guidance you need when it comes to GDPR compliance, and why it matters so much when it comes to your business's reputation and credibility. KEY TAKEAWAYS Data security is about protecting valuable information from unauthorised access, preserving the integrity of the data and ensuring that the data is available to authorised users when needed. As a consultant, data breach may result in damage to your reputation and decrease your clients confidence in your ability to protect their valuable information, which could therefore lead to loss of clients and business. Record keeping and data cleansing in line with employment, financial and health and safety legislation is key to remaining GDPR compliant. Subject Access Request – data subjects can ask to see information that organisations hold on them. This must be provided to the data subject within 30 days of receipt. If the request is complex, the 30 day period can be extended for a further two months BEST MOMENTS 'As consultants we use technology for our businesses all the time. That's why protecting our devices is very important' 'Previously you had HR records in a locked filing cabinet!' 'You should be quite careful about who you give administrator status to. It's a great responsibility' 'Policies and procedures don't fail. Productivity makes or breaks peak performance in ourselves, our teams, and our organizations. However, since the development of more and more “productivity” tools there’s been a steady decline in productivity. Simply put, we are getting overwhelmed with everything which “must” be done to be productive. Productivity is about simplifying the process and enabling people to work in their zone of genius and not zone of failure. Eli Goldratt wrote a book called The Goal, which Verne Harnish has described as one of the most important business books ever written. With such an accolade, we had to have Andy Watt, MD of Goldratt, on the show. Andy is a founding member of the Theory of Constraints International Certification Organisation (TOCICO) and a Chartered Fellow of CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport). He's also the owner and driving force behind Goldratt UK, and he has the singular aim of increasing the exposure of Theory of Constraints (TOC) in the UK.Over the last fifteen years, Andy and Goldratt UK have worked with hundreds of organisations implementing TOC including Bentley, McLaren, Honeywell, Masterfoods, Bombardier, Eurostar, Siemens and Johnson Matthey.Today, Andy talks about managing constraints, not just in a manufacturing or engineering business, but in any business that runs project work. The idea that constraints should be managed is applicable to so many businesses, regardless of their industry. The common thread is that people often know what the constraint is, and what the solution to the problem is, but somehow can't fix it themselves. “Fundamentally, it's how you release work into the system, which is really important. So we release it at the rate at which the constraint can produce it. So shoving it in doesn't make it come out, which is a lesson that most people don't understand.”We also discuss how many CEOs and business leaders have a belief problem that they need to overcome and that the actual constraint might be a belief and not a real thing. This is a fascinating conversation, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. On today's podcast:Why a physicist wrote a business bookEli's algorithm to release work into the systemThe constraint is often the most simple thingFlow dynamics/ flowing capacityKnowing what done/good looks likeOvercoming beliefs

“As a Financial Planner, you are not trying to sell a thing; you are trying to solve a problem.” I love this quote from Chartered Fellow Richard Mikdadi, a partner at Tilney. I've known Richard for over a decade - we sat opposite each other when we both worked for Aviva. I knew back then that he was destined for great things, and that day came when he got to be a guest on The Financial Planner Life podcast. Joking aside, Richard was a fantastic guest who shares some absolute gems around a hugely successful career in UHNW financial planning. Not one to be missed! Some of the topics covered:· The benefits of being a Chartered Fellow, both for the planner and clients. · Financial Planning for UHNW clients: is a different skill set required? · Why understanding your clients' hopes, dreams and fears will make you a better financial planner. · Teamwork makes the dream work: why surrounding yourself with experts is a must. This fascinating and highly-participative webinar pits the audience against three ethical dilemmas. The webinar begins with our two panellists setting out some of the wide divergences they've found over the years in ethical decision-making and ethical standards-setting. These differences are often due to cultural factors, at a societal or a firm level. These differences are often due to different ethical frameworks. These differences are often due to greed or fear. Following the short opening discussion, the audience will asked to choose their actions for two different dilemmas, "Trading On Pandemic Information" and "Managing Client Assets During A Global Pandemic" [see videos below]. After the first choice, the expert panellists will try to change the audience opinion over a discussion of the group results before asking the same question again. In this episode of the HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda is joined by David D'Souza, the Director of Membership at the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). He sat down with Lucinda for a frank and honest conversation, in which he answered questions from the community about the behind-the-scenes goings-on at the hub of personnel and development, as well as their intentions for the future. And, ultimately, what did the CIPD ever do for me?! It's a fascinating look behind the curtain, and throws considerable light on some of the concerns that UK-based HR professionals may have, as well as the solutions that may be on the way. KEY TAKEAWAYS The profession needs a fantastic professional body, something that David is keen to promote and be a part of. Many have their skepticisms about the CIPD, but David believes that he can promote positive change from the inside. The CIPD needs to drastically improve its technology and infrastructure. It also needs to be a key provider of content for the profession. The CIPD conducts many surveys in order to speak directly to professionals about their concerns and wishes. They also pay attention to all of the social channels, as well as the voices on the ground levels through visits and real interaction. The biggest challenge for the CIPD is that it currently requires a new hybrid integration platform in order to prevent data from arriving in pieces, and in a broken state. Community forums are swift resources of information but can be one-sided. The CIPD needs to be that one-stop-shop in terms of impartiality, quality, and speed-of-response. The CIPD needs to be more aspirational in terms of vision, but similarly, it needs to spend more time “clearing out the gutters” than reaching for the stars. It's a hard balancing act. In terms of diversity, we need to increase the diversity of the sector as well as the diversity of background and voice. Diversity is one of David's key drivers. Conferences and networking events run by the CIPD need to increase their reach in terms of diversity. They sell out, but rather than this being a positive, does it not mean that smaller and less affluent professionals are not being represented there? It can feel from the outside that the CIPD are standing still when in reality, much work is being done on infrastructure and internal systems and processes.
