Welcome to episode twenty-eight of David & Stu… Unhinged! As always, we'd like to thank Clara Wang for creating the fantastic artwork for this podcast. In this episode, David and Stu cover the following:1) The death of Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary, and his connection to Jimmy Carter, who pardoned him for being a sex offender of a minor;2) Biden further disgraces the Presidency by awarding Presidential Medals of Freedom to Hillary Clinton, George Soros, and Anna Wintour, which has caused universal condemnation;3) A sex scandal involving former Chief of the NYPD, Jeffrey Maddrey, who paid significant overtime to female staff who he was romantically entangled with.4) The tragic California wildfires and how the situation has been mishandled by the progressive Mayor, Karen Bass, who left the state for Ghana after being warned that Los Angeles was in danger, and the mismanagement of California's natural resources by state and federal officials, most notably Gavin Newson, a shameless opportunist with no integrity. Following the election of President Donald Trump in November, California Gov. Gavin Newson, a Democrat, convened a special session of the state legislatures to “Trump-proof” California. At the top of the agenda is Newson's effort to prevent a Trump administration from deporting illegal aliens living in the state.    “This is going against the rule of law and against the will of the American people” who elected Trump, Allison Huynh said of Newson's efforts.    Democrats in California have “romanticized” sanctuary cities and even crime, according to Huynh, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and former Democrat.    “We're just opening the gate and allowing all these illegal immigrants to come in, a lot of criminals, drug dealers, and it's all funded by George Soros and the cartels,” she said.    A narrative has been perpetuated in California that justifies crime in the name of being kind to the poor, according to Huynh, but the reality is that “were basically frogs being boiled alive.” Huynh grew up in a Marxist Communist country until the age of seven when her family left Vietnam and moved to America, and says she is watching as her state embraces “full blown socialism.”    Huynh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how Newson's actions are moving her state towards socialism, and if there is any hope left for California. The verdict on California's November election? America's largest “blue” state emerged black-and-blue as voters sent bruising, non-progressive messages regarding public safety, wage increases, and future approval of local bonds. Hoover senior fellow Lee Ohanian and distinguished policy fellow Bill Whalen, both contributors to Hoover's California on Your Mind web channel, join Hoover senior product manager Jonathan Movroydis to discuss the latest in the Golden State, including the political futures of vice president Kamala Harris and governor Gavin Newson (does she want his job?). They also discuss a special legislative session to “Trump-proof” the Golden State, plus the remote likelihood of Sacramento and Washington cooperating on changes to federal immigration policy. Recorded on November 20, 2024.

Congratulations on making it through another week! What better way to celebrate than a rundown on some of the latest happenings at the intersection of business, technology, and human experience. From AI Voice to Humanoid Robots to the Future of Wearables, I've got you covered. With that, let's get to it. Advanced Voice Mode - Who needs friends? OpenAI's advanced voice mode is finally here. Now, you can talk to yourself in public and not be considered crazy. In all seriousness, it's a pretty impressive development, but what exactly should you do with the functionality? Meta Connect 2024 - On the topic of AI Voice, the Zuckster is betting big on it as was clearly demonstrated at the Meta Connect 2024 event. Honestly, their latest AI developments are incredible, which is to be expected. However, would you be surprised to find out the maker of Facebook would create new tech with some serious long-term risks? Meta Orion - While you might think AR & VR tech went the way a neutron star, you'd be wrong. Meta made the news again this week with a lot of noise about their Orion glasses. Honestly, watching a few videos, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a pair, but don't get your hopes up. They won't be available to the public. However, my predictions on the trajectory of the tech are spot on. Humanoid Robots - It's been a while since I stirred people's fears of humanoid robots taking over the world, but with all the advancement in 2024, I thought it was time to kick the hornet's nest again. If you thought they'd fallen to the wayside, prepare for a poor night's rest tonight because these things are getting crazy. On the bright side, you'll have a suite of options when deciding which one kicks down your door. AI Governance Veto - If you were hoping new legislation might slow the freight train of AI development, prepare to have your hopes dashed. California governor Gavin Newson vetoed SB 1047 and its attempts to make our insane superpower safe for humanity. However, with compelling arguments like "that will cost money" and "it will slow down development," can you blame him? Show Notes: In this Weekly Update, Christopher examines the capabilities and implications of OpenAI's advanced voice mode becoming available for pro users, emphasizing its potential applications and possible hazards. He discusses MetaConnect 2024 highlighting Meta's advancements in AI voice technology, particularly its implications for content creation and virtual enhancements. Christopher also addresses the rapid progress of humanoid robots and their emerging roles in sectors like space exploration, healthcare, and home use. The episode ends on the potential societal challenges linked to AI and emerging technologies, including the ethical considerations and the need for balanced regulation, using California's vetoed AI safety bill as a case study. 00:00 - Introduction and Weekly Update Overview 01:22 - Exploring OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode 05:39 - Practical Use Cases for AI Voice 13:26 - MetaConnect 2024 Highlights 24:19 - Introducing Meta Orion 31:19 - Humanoid Robots: The Next Frontier 40:40 - California AI Veto - Regulation and Governance 50:20 - Final Thoughts and Conclusion #ai #metaconnect #aivoice #humanoidrobot #metaverse

The Mike Hosking Breakfast
Mike's Minute: Is America ready for a female president?

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2024 2:10

Media outlets around the world rolled out the predictable articles yesterday post the announcement, with the headline "Who is Kamala Harris?"  They rolled out the same articles several years ago when she got picked as Vice President.  Depending on whether those articles are applicable in America depends a bit on whether she can now go on and win.  The Vice President isn't really a thing. They say it is, but Mike Pence was a good example before Kamala Harris that, really, it's a figurehead job.  Yes, you are one heartbeat away from the presidency, but no one honestly expects that to mean anything. Except in the Harris case, you remember, she was meant to be something. She was meant to be the replacement when Biden bailed, either at the end of the first term, or anointed her at the start of the second.  She was the succession because Biden's job was to beat Trump, then retire.  The reason it never came to pass was because Harris turned out to be a dud and the problem with that is the job she never got handed on merit, she now potentially gets handed by default.  So the question is: can she run on a record that isn't Biden, given she is inextricably linked to the administration, or does she sink because of it?  How much of Biden's lack of support was because he was old and befuddled? How much did Americans not see the good stuff in the economy because of Biden and maybe they can now see it under Harris?  Is Harris so much better known than any of the other possibilities like Gavin Newson or Gretchen Whitmer, that she has too much of an inbuilt advantage to risk a real unknown?  Plus, a very real question, even though many would argue it shouldn't be.  It's the Clinton question. Is America ready for a female president? Did Clinton lose because she was a woman, a Clinton, or because Trump was better?  These are all live questions. The upside is the big money is starting to flow for Harris that wasn't flowing for Biden. She knows how the White House works, and the others don't.  She might, might, be able to grow the Democrat turnout from those who would have stayed at home because Biden was too old to take seriously. Also, none of the others are so obviously better than her that you can't go past them.  So you can make a case for Kamala.  But make no mistake. This is now, and still, Trump's to lose. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This circuitious episode, hosted by Steve in Budapest with John Yoo in Dallas and Lucretia in her undisclosed desert location, starts off with the entirely predictable news that David Brooks drinks his whisky on the rocks (insert shudders and horror here), and quickly moves on to the news that hasn't broken yet, so we'll fix it: Gavin Newson is running for president. We know—he hasn't offically announced, but he's behaving like a candidate more and more every day. And why has no one noticed that Newsom would also solve the Democrats' Kamala problem? (See the Constitution, Article II, Section 1, especially the passage that reads, "The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves." That rules out Kamala as Newsom's running mate, which is okay because Newsom and Harris hate each other. We also devote too much time to the sartorial severity that is the Fetterman Senate Dress code, and you'll just need to listen to hear who Lucretia calls "Senator Stripper Boots."From there Steve gives a central European "sit rep" on attitudes there about the Ukraine War, American policy about the war, and general political matters, all gleaned from Steve's conversations with highly placed (and very smart) Hungarian sources. We've been wanting to talk about a legal issue that's been our mind for a while, and we finally get to it in this episode in depth: qualified immunity. We don't quite reach a firm conlusion about how the doctrine should be reformed, but you'll feel smarter for our dissection of it.Finally, a few quick notes on the Kendi implosion, missing jet fighters, and other fun matters. But not to worry—we're still drinking our whisky neat, even if David Brooks kills his with four ice cubes. In an airport.

We are joined for a special episode of Ojai: Talk of the Town with Josh Gohlke, the former deputy opinion page editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. Gohlke has been writing about and covering Gov. Gavin Newson since his 2018 election. He shares his opinion about the recall process, the opera bouffe of the 46 mostly eccentric candidates, the perils of campaigning with bears, and the terrible urgency of this election. Not only can a sitting governor be replaced with someone who is the choice of fewer than 15 percent of the electorate, but control of the U.S. Senate may well be at stake. (Dianne Feinstein, please don't Ruth Bader Ginsburg us. And while we're at it, Justice Stephen Breyer, don't you either). Josh and I catch up about our years in Kernville, California, his strange, nigh mystical relationship with former Department of Water Resources chief Frank Gehrke and why journalism still matters. We also talk about the French Laundry's consciousness-altering menu, the forces behind the recall, the dual nihilism on display in the state and country and the deadline for getting ballots into the mail. We did not talk about Newsom's relationship with either his famous harp-maestro cousin Joanne or his ordeal at the hands of Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Biden avoids questions regarding whether he believes the teachers in Chicago should go back to work and resets his expectations on defeating the virus, Portland mayor Ted Wheeler hires a former mayor accused of grooming young men, and it looks like the Netherlands may be on the brink of a 'civil war'. Biden wants to 'build back better' by buying American; Hawley fires back at Senate Democrats that are calling for his resignation over his objection to the electoral count; the federal government may fund San Francisco's failing 'homeless hotel' program; and Ted Wheeler may have just proved himself to be a fascist On this episode I discuss Caitlin Johnstone's take on censorship and how it shouldn't be cheered on, as it'll eventually find it's way to you. Then I'll talk about how Gavin Newson has flipped on his COVID restrictions due to the recall efforts. Dr. Fauci has gone from saying that we don't need to wear a mask, to we have to wear a mask, and now that it couldn't hurt to wear two masks. Finally, I'll touch on the filibuster.
