VOADV serves more than 13,000 individuals throughout the southern New Jersey and Philadelphia region and operates more than 40 assistance programs – from homelessness, reentry, veterans assistance, and affordable housing services to specialized programs for individuals living with substance use disorder, traumatic brain injury and/or intellectual disabilities. VOADV's mission, which governs all service and assistance provided to clients in need, is to provide community-based assistance to individuals in need so that they can lead self-fulfilled, independent lives. They are more than crisis relief, donations allow them to provide the follow-up services to help families and individuals continue their path to independence. We talked about need, he estimates that requests have grown over 65% from last year, housing and employment driving the surge. Dan discussed their family shelters, 2 men's shelters, one medical respite shelter and one veterans' shelter. They also have 2 men and 1 women's halfway house and other Reentry programs making the transition back to the community more seamless for individuals coming back from prison. He spoke of their new launches, a tri-county IMPACT office which helps clients navigate through social services will be opening at the end of November in Vineland and they are preparing to launch a mobile legal clinic. We discussed their current campaign, Adopt A Family. Alexis asks individuals, families and businesses to step to help families in need through the holiday season. While she's always looking for donations of underwear and socks and toiletries, at this time of year they look to provide families with wish-list items, from warm clothes to toys and sports gear. A record number of families have asked for assistance this year. You can adopt an entire family or go through their wish list at Amazon.com and let VOADV direct the gift. And all of [that] starts with people.” - J'aime Drayton [06:21] “Managing volunteers is probably the hardest thing I think I've ever done. Introducing Bruce and Teri Sue Parker Their non-profit organization Good Samaritan Community Food Pantry Learn about Adopt-A-Family for Christmas and also discuss Adopt-A-Senior Their current needs and future goals of the Good Samaritan Community Food Pantry Good Samaritan Community Food Pantry serves isolated seniors, veterans, cancer patients, foster families and families at risk and in need. They deliver fresh, frozen, canned and boxed food items, toiletries and pet supplies weekly. When COVID began to close down the city, Teri's first concern was, seniors. After seeing the long lines in the grocery, she thought, how are seniors that are at risk and cannot leave their home, going to eat? Being a woman of action, that day she made a sign and planted it in her front yard. “Operation Temecula Food Drive” and put a big box in front of it. After reaching out to local business, she received her first donation, from a loving Chamber member; OTFD was born. Since, she has fed hundreds of isolated seniors, cancer patients, wounded veterans, and families at risk. Her service was noticed by California Assembly member of the 75th district Marie Walden, who recognized her as being a COVID-19 Community hero. Now OTFD has officially become a non-profit organization, “Good Samaritan Community Food Pantry". Besides serving the isolated seniors, and families at risk, she wanted them to have a wonderful holiday and following her message, Live, Love, Give… She launched a very successful Adopt-A-Senior, and Adopt-A-Family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and brought much needed love to the Temecula Valley. Operation Ward 57 has many amazing programs. Adam and Patti sat down and talk with Executive Director Brittney Hamilton and Heather Sliwinski to discuss their ADOPT A FAMILY program and their Honor & Courage Program. As the holidays approach, and many families struggle to make ends meet, Operation Ward 57 saves the day for many disabled military veterans and Gold Star Families through their ADOPT A FAMILY program. Operation Ward 57 has a goal to help these families in needs with Christmas and Hanukkah presents for their children, along with a grocery card or prepaid Visa gift card for the family to purchase their holiday dinner and trimmings. Sheila Modglin has been a bartender at the legendary Dirty Franks bar in Philly for 31 years. The night of the Eagles Superbowl parade celebration, Sheila was struck by a car and severely injured. Sheila's brother Rick joins Kristen in studio to give an (encouraging) update on Sheila, to solicit thoughts and healing vibes for her, and to talk about an event going on the entire month of October called Dining Out for Sheila. A number of restaurants all over the city (and outside of the city too) have come together to ask the public to dine out at a different restaurant or cafe every day in the month of October, to help support Sheila's therapy and recovery. Find all of the details at https://www.diningoutforsheila.com/ and please help (eat!) if you can.

In this past quarter contributions have been down considerably. Budgeted income for July through October is $650,000. Actual July through October Income is $591,000. That's a $59,000 shortfall. The good news is that expenses are also down, but we are hopeful we can make up this gap as we move into the second quarter of our fiscal year. https://www.youtube.com/user/WrightStateU We Serve U and the Interfraternity Council are working together to help children in the Dayton area. There are two ways that Wright State students, faculty and staff can help this holiday season. The first is to provide a new, unwrapped gift or toy for children under the age of 17. You can drop off your donation in a Toys for Tots bin located in numerous locations around the university. The Interfratenity Council placed bins at Student Activities Office (019 Student Union); Dunbar Library (first floor); Wright State Research Institute lobby; Women's Center (148 Millett Hall); Veteran and Military Center (131 Allyn Hall); Athletics Office (Nutter Center); Institutional Research and Analytics (350 University Hall). Donation bins will be in place until Dec. 6. After the bins are collected, Toys for Tots will distribute the toys as Christmas gifts to area children. The second way to help is to adopt a child/children/family. You and/or your office, organization or family can choose to "adopt" a family for the holidays by providing gifts for them personally based on their modest wish list. Review the list families : annual “Adopt A Family” gift drive. “It’s in the mission statement to help the communities that we serve,” said Joanie Hendricks, the co-chair of We Serve U. Wright State has hosted annual toy drives for more than 20 years. This is the third year We Serve U has hosted the gift drive. Last year, more than 800 gifts were donated. The Virgin Islands Dept. of Human Services’ (VIDHS) Division of Children and Family Services is seeking sponsors for its annual Adopt-A-Family Holidays program. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, individuals, family members, friends, groups, schools, and organizations are asked to donate $80 to purchase a holiday meal or a gift certificate for families in the territory, according to a press release issued Wednesday by VIDHS. Commissioner-designee, Dr. Anita Roberts, Ph.D., said, “This is the community’s opportunity to experience the joy of giving to those who are less fortunate by paying it forward and helping put a smile on the faces of the children who otherwise may not have a positive experience during the holidays. The families are very appreciative of the kindness that is shown to them.” The deadline for submitting contributions for Thanksgiving is Nov. 17th. The deadline for submitting contributions for Christmas is Dec. 16th. For more information about becoming a sponsor of the program on St. Thomas-St. John or St. Croix, call 774-0930 and ask to speak with either Michelle Benjamin at ext. 4340 or Heather Lambertis at ext. 4245. President Obama addresses terror threat. Greenbay's Hail Mary. More football talk. Looking like we'll have the political round table next week. Adopt-A-Family, Dan loses his doll and Target comes through in a pinch. Fact or Crap: One a piece for both of us. Mail Bag: One from Damon on the clock boy. One from Peter on Texas law leads to more attempts at self-induced abortions. Two from Joe: 1) Pentagon spent $150 million on private villas and security guards for government employees in Afghanistan. 2) Lawsuit says Macy's traps minorities in shoplifting cells and extorts them for bogus fines. The Rest of the Show: All email this week.
Being charitable during the holidays. Dr. Xmas speaks with Kristen Parraz, Adopt-a-Family Coordinator from Adopt-a-Family L.A. Hear how this wonderful program works and how you can help. Meet Dr. Xmas, your consummate holiday expert. Born on December 25th (we’ll save the year), the holiday has held a special place in her heart since she was a tiny tot. She’s made Christmas and all its festivities, myths and folklore her niche. Exploring Christmas—its joy and magic and what it means to those around her is where she puts just some of her unstoppable, bubbly yuletide energy. Dr. Xmas has a life-long connection to Christmas as well as a passion for education and literature. She's a UCLA graduate in Linguistics and English, holds a degree from the Children's Institute for Children's Literature, and a Masters degree in English Education from Syracuse University. She is an educator, a writer and a business woman. Oh yeah, and in her spare time, she dabbles with a full-time job in advertising and marketing. In her blog, and hopefully in her book someday very soon, she explores holiday themes, rituals and those crazy things we do each holiday season. Some of these you may have been wondering about for years, others well-who knew? All in the name of peace on earth and peace of mind: Why do we fill socks? What's with kissing under mistletoe and whose brilliant idea was it for making fruitcake anyway? Her goal? To spread good tidings of great cheer and all things Tiny Tim to a sometimes too-busy-for-Christmas world. Whew! Now that's something worth striving for, don't you think? Enjoy and Merry Christmas to all! You can read, follow and comment on her blog at http://xmaskid.blogspot.com and on Facebook
