Rob Waters, Gomeroi poet and storyteller and the current Australian Poetry Slam champion joined me for a rich and deep conversation about an all-encompassing spirituality that exists beyond the boxes of a compartmentalised life. Rob shares about the grounding role of Country and Story from a First Nations perspective. We then explore the prophetic role of the poets in speaking truth in an unjust world, while also acknowledging that listening ought to precede speaking. Towards the end of the conversation Rob shares two powerful poems and some particularly poignant and challenging stories. There's great wisdom here for those who take the time to open their hearts and listen. It's been a tough secret to keep but we are delighted to announce the winner of this year's Bruce Mason Playwriting Award. The $10,000 prize goes to Chinese-Kiwi, Christchurch-based playwright Nathan Joe. The award hopes to encourage the winner to keep writing for the theatre and that's exactly what Nathan intends to do. It's a busy year for Nathan. He's also won a 2022 Grimshaw Sargeson Literary Fellowship, based at the Sargeson Centre in Auckland where he'll work on his new play called Personal Essays. Before then, Auckland Theatre Company is staging his provocative work Scenes From A Yellow Peril about racism and privilege in Aotearoa, as part of next year's programme. In addition, Nathan Joe's the 2020 National Poetry Slam Champion, but he won't be able to defend that title because it clashes with next year's Auckland Pride Festival that he's also involved with! Where does he find the time? Nathan talks to Lynn Freeman about how much of a morale boost winning the Playwriting Award has been for him.
In this week's Side B episode Elizabeth is given a run for her money with the incredible spoken word poetry of Singapore's Victoria Lim. Religion, by Victoria Lim, is the first spoken word piece to be featured on I Offer Poetry and since it is a lesser known piece, it required our host to do a lot more supposition and exploration of her own feelings and relationship to the poem. Poet Victoria Lim spent her childhood in Penang, Malaysia and moved to Singapore when she was nine. She began writing poetry in 2010 and became Singapore's National Poetry Slam Champion in 2013. Lim is a theatre practitioner and is especially well known for her contributions to performance poetry. She is a founding member of the all-female spoken word collective, Sekaliwags, and has performed at Lit-Up! Festival (Singapore) and Cooler Lumpur Festival (Malaysia). Throughout this episode we engage with themes of growing up, indulging complacency, and what it means to be a modern romantic partner. Elizabeth sounds off on how she also sees the temptation to use religion as an escape from heavy thoughts and daily patterns. “I love sharing contemporary poets, because I think that's something we miss out on. I've mentioned before I think we do a lot of reading the poetry of, quite honestly, dead white men in the American education system. And I think it's exciting to find new voices, but especially contemporary voices, and remind ourselves that poetry is a living breathing thing. People are still writing poetry.” - Elizabeth Ellson Timestamps: 00:00:48 Poem Reading (Elizabeth) 00:04:42 Author Info 00:06:30 Elizabeth's Relationship to the Poem 00:25:10 Pause / Poem Reading (Elizabeth) 00:30:17 Reflection & Invitation to Write Us! They often say you shouldn't meet people you admire because they may disappoint you. After over a decade of following slam poet, thespian, and organizer Mayda Del Valle's career and creative works, I have to say I was not disappointed. Despite being nervous to meet this Def Poetry Jam star, Mayda has a way of disarming you with her charm and contagious laughter. We spoke about her iconic poem, "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" which can be seen here, which is one of my favorite pieces from Mayda. We discussed her upbringing in Chicago, how hip-hop influenced her life, and the role that community organizing played in making her the storyteller that she is. Guest Bio: Poet and performer Mayda Del Valle has been described by the Chicago Sun Times as having “a way with words. Sometimes they seem to flutter and roll off her lips. Other times they burst forth like a comet streaking across a nighttime sky.” Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. She is the author of A South Side Girl's Guide to Love and Sex , The University of Hip Hop and was a winner of the 2016 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize from Northwestern University Press. She appeared on six episodes of the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She began her artistic career at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where she was the 2001 Grand Slam Champion, and went on to become the National Poetry Slam Champion in the same year. She was the youngest poet, and the first Latinx person to do so. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. Oprah's “O” Magazine selected her as one of 20 women for the first ever “O Power List”, a group of visionary women making a mark in business, politics, and the arts. She has performed at venues across the world, including the White House in May of 2009, by invitation of President Obama and the First Lady. She has also served as a mentor and educator in the non-profit world, teaching poetry and performance to incarcerated youth. She currently works in the tech industry at Snap Inc. facilitating talking circles and developing curriculum to support company wide DEI initiatives that scale empathy and understanding. Mayda had also been a devoted student of various healing practices and African Traditional Religions. She is a third degree Reiki Master, and completed a two year Indigenous African Spiritual Technologies program with respected Dagara elder Malidoma Some. Soon after she was led into the ancient Yoruba spiritual tradition of Ifa. She was initiated into the mysteries of the ocean deity, Olokun in 2017. Inquire Within is an extraordinary collection of IN-Q's poetry, his work, his words, and his wisdom. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Launching his book during the pandemic and at the height of fear How he got into spoken poetry and where poetry is right now in popular culture The New You Workshop Leading by example even through your vulnerability A taste of his favorite poem about capturing pictures vs. capturing moments Meditation and breathing techniques that he's practicing Episode Highlights: Finding the Silver Linings Everyone defines themselves, consciously or unconsciously, by the external world, especially in a capitalist society. We're all trying to accomplish something. It's a complicated dichotomy to figure out how to use that as fuel to achieve your goals. But at the same time, to not be so attached to your expectations that you allow it to steal your joy. There's always going to be more. There is never an end to more. So if more is your goal, you're always going to come off short. The purpose of life is not to have this much or who you know, or what you've achieved. It's not even what you do in the world. It's who you are in this moment. In the neverending now. It's the joy of being alive and the miracle of being alive. A Few Lines from His Favorite Poem When you notice something beautiful do you think that's a beautiful moment, or that would be a beautiful picture? When you attempt to capture something, do you alter its very nature? Can you sit with the uncertainty like God's other creatures? Do you have to freeze a memory to immortalize its features? Do you need to prove that you were there in order to exist? Do you crave the recognition in a way you can't admit? Do you wrestle with impermanence with poison on your lips? Do you resist the emptiness by trying to imprison bliss? Capturing Pictures vs. Capturing Moments By taking pictures, it's how we prove that we were there. This is the thing that gives us value so much so that we actually miss being there. We don't notice what's actually around us. And in that way, we missed our lives. Elizabeth Acevedo is a poet and novelist whose books are alive with Dominican-American and Afro- Caribbean culture and community and have at their centers teenage girls learning to navigate life, relaxing into and pushing against their upbringings. A National Poetry Slam Champion, Liz's second book The Poet X won the National Book Award for young people's literature in 2018. (And in case you haven't read it—and if you haven't, you should-- The Poet X is a novel in verse that tells the story of 15 year-old Xiomara as she wrestles with her mother's expectations and discovers herself through slam poetry.) Since The Poet X, Elizabeth Acevedo has written two more highly acclaimed books: With the Fire on High, a novel told in prose about Emoni a high school student who's a mother and who's also determined to become a chef. And now, most recently, Clap When You Land -- once again a novel in verse—that has as its jumping off point a tragic plane crash, the lies and secrets it reveals, and what's lost and what's found in the face of terrible grief. Clap When You Land looks at family and community across two cultures from the perspective of two generations of women—all fierce, capable and imperfect. Elizabeth Acevedo is as lively and charismatic a guest as she is a writer. In this podcast, she talks about her own family who inflamed her imagination with stories, her love for the Dominican Republic even as she understands its flaws, the profound difficulty of uprooting oneself and leaving one country for another, and the challenges and joy of having deep connections to multiple worlds.

A National Poetry Slam Champion, Liz’s second book The Poet X won the National Book Award for young people’s literature in 2018. (And in case you haven’t read it—and if you haven’t, you should-- The Poet X is a novel in verse that tells the story of 15 year-old Xiomara as she wrestles with her mother’s expectations and discovers herself through slam poetry.) Since The Poet X, Elizabeth Acevedo has written two more highly acclaimed books: With the Fire on High, a novel told in prose about Emoni a high school student who’s a mother and who’s also determined to become a chef. And now, most recently, Clap When You Land -- once again a novel in verse—that has as its jumping off point a tragic plane crash, the lies and secrets it reveals, and what’s lost and what’s found in the face of terrible grief.

IN-Q schreibt u.a. Was war deine größte Erkenntnis? As we navigate this perilous moment, may we find some sliver of grace. May we embrace beauty. Choose curiosity over rigidity. Compassion and fullness of heart over closed mindedness. And social connection over geographic isolation -- even if it be temporarily virtual.Difficult times across history have always resulted in explosions of creative expression. Art as a means of better understanding our shared human condition.Few people embody this ethos more thoroughly than today’s guest, one of my very favorite people breathing air on planet Earth.Generous, present and deeply curious, he goes by the moniker IN-Q.Long-time listeners will fondly recall our two previous sit-downs (RRP #81 & #118 back in 2014) and his appearance at our more recent live event (RRP #473). If you did not know, the City of Boston has a Poet Laureate. The job maintains that the appointed poet must be a significant fixture in Boston's cultural and artistic arena. The Poet Laureate may learn, teach, and embody the great literary traditions of Boston. If embodying the great literary traditions of Boston means you are a rock star 2014 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion and 2015 National Poetry Slam Champion who is a writer, performer, educator and curator who uses afro-futurism and surrealism to examine historical and current issues in the Black, woman, and queer diasporas, then PorshaPorsha Olayiwola fits the bill. We’ve been hearing Porsha’s name over the past year or so and as far as poet laureates go she must be the most visible and active poet laureate we have ever had on ATB.Porsha just released her first book I Shimmer Sometimes Too which has received rave reviews. We were fortunate to have former guest and hip-hop artist Moe Pope as our very special co-host this time around.

Saeed Jones is in conversation with Clint Smith. Presented in partnership with CityLit Project.Haunted and haunting, How We Fight for Our Lives: tells the story of a young, black, gay man from the South as he fights to carve out a place for himself, within his family, within his country, within his own hopes, desires, and fears. Through a series of vignettes that chart a course across the American landscape, Jones draws readers into his boyhood and adolescence—into tumultuous relationships with his mother and grandmother, into passing flings with lovers, friends and strangers. Each piece builds into a larger examination of race and queerness, power and vulnerability, love and grief: a portrait of what we all do for one another—and to one another—as we fight to become ourselves.Saeed Jones is the author of Prelude to Bruise, winner of the 2015 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry and the 2015 Stonewall Book Award/Barbara Gittings Literature Award. The poetry collection was also a finalist for the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award, as well as awards from Lambda Literary and the Publishing Triangle in 2015. “There’s no difference between a climate denier and somebody who’s literate in climate change and doesn’t do anything.”Paul HawkenI'm ecstatic to share my first live podcast event, recorded at the Los Angeles Wilshire Ebell Theatre on September 27, 2019.For all of us, this podcast is an abstraction. The motivation behind the event was to create a tactile, analog experience for 1,100 people to gather around shared purpose and passion. An opportunity to cultivate community. Raise consciousness. Elevate intimacy. Deepen personal connectivity around our collective humanity — and the important ideas of our time.An unforgettable lifetime moment, the resulting impact exceeded my wildest expectations. I'm still basing in the glow. And deeply grateful for an experience that left me feeling more intimately connected with all of you — and optimistic about the future of our planet. The program opens with the poetic spoken word genius of my friend and two-time podcast guest IN-Q (check out RRP 81 & RRP 118).Named to Oprah Winfrey's SuperSoul 100 list of the world's most influential thought leaders, IN-Q is a National Poetry Slam Champion, multi-platinum songwriter, and world-renowned keynote speaker. His groundbreaking performances include selling out one of the largest one-man poetry shows in US history, being the first spoken word artist to perform with Cirque Du Soleil, and being featured on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and A&E’s Look Closer campaign, which debuted during the Emmys. He has been featured in major media ranging from Forbes to AdWeek and several of his recent videos have gone viral with over 60 million combined views.I then take the stage to share some thoughts, including a powerful listener e-mail, before settling into a fascinating conversation with Paul Hawken — one of the world's pre-eminent authorities on global climate change and a man who has indelibly shaped my personal perspective on ecological responsibility.A pioneering environmentalist, activist, entrepreneur, architect of corporate reform, and multiple New York Times bestselling author, Paul has dedicated his life to environmental sustainability and changing the relationship between business and the environment. His work includes founding successful ecologically conscious businesses (including the natural foods market Erewhon), writing about the impacts of commerce on living systems and consulting with heads of state and CEOs on economic development, industrial ecology and environmental policy. I first met Gee when he was a student in grade school, but now this young man is blowing up in the industry and has come a long way since those early days, including days when he was too young for some spots including some spots that he was competing in....also a long way from his appearance at the Southern Regionals when it was held in Durham, NC....National Poetry Slam Champion. Cultural Diplomat for the Department of State. Kundiman Fellow.G YAMAZAWA has been featured on ABC, NBC, NPR, PBS, and has toured over 200 universities both domestic and internationally. With notable performances at the Sundance Film Festival and the Pentagon, G continues to challenge the American perspective of race & culture, poetry & rap, and the phenomena of the human condition... ..I have also known Nicole Baxter, the talented interior designer and real estate agent..who wants u to make the connection between our homes and the way they are designed and feel..As an educated and practicing Interior Designer, REALTOR, and Myers Briggs administrator, I know that a house alone does not make a home, no matter how well decorated, nor does a real estate purchase transaction. Home is a state of mind that comes from our unique outlook on life, our values, emotional expression, relationships, and the environment where we live. My goal is to understand what that means to my clients and look at them as a whole person, then help them to achieve their ideal sense of home by going deeper into traditional professional practices to find and create spaces that speak to them. . G's debut album "Shouts to Durham," charted at #37 on the iTunes top 100 rap albums, and is currently working on his sophomore release.

He is a former National Poetry Slam Champion, was featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, On Point, Radio Boston, and various other NPR programs. These are some of the questions illustrator and comic book artist Nicole Georges asked when writing her graphic memoir “Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home.” The book focuses on Georges’ symbiotic relationship with a spirited, neurotic and sometimes fearfully aggressive dog named Beija, and it's a contender for the Oregon Book Award for Graphic Literature. “In the Pocket of Small Gods” with Anis Mojgani — 38:34The poet Anis Mojgani isn’t up for one of Literary Arts' Oregon Book Awards — at least not this year — but he is a Literary Arts favorite. Anis Mojgani has been said to be a poet who gleefully spurns the boundaries of poet. He is not only a two-time National Poetry Slam Champion, winner of the International World Cup Poetry Slam, and multiple-time TEDx Speaker, but he’s also an Iranian American living in Oregon with a passion for processing the human interior. Notable to mention: he is one of Branden Harvey’s favorite poets. Anis has performed his slam poetry around the globe and has performed for audiences as varied as the House of Blues and the United Nations. He is also the author of three poetry collections — Songs From Under the River, The Feather Room, Over the Anvil We Stretch. In this conversation, Branden and Anis (while eating doughnuts) take an in-depth look at how poetry can be a tool for creative exploration through the tremendous grief and joy that life holds for humanity. One important note before I let you go: his wonderful grandmother passed away a few days before recording this podcast with me, so I want to thank him and her for being gracious for spending some time with me. Res in power, obaa-chan. Your spirit lives on. In this episode, we go in-depth into many different topics, including: the power of poetry, living an unconventional life, cause and effect, mentors & teachers, his process for writing, family, death, and he answers some of your questions towards the end. George Yamazawa uses spoken word poetry to address personal conflicts and inner struggles. Yamazawa is a National Poetry Slam Champion and his writing is deeply tied to his Japanese-American heritage. In this episode of Stories with a Heartbeat , host Will McInerney talks with poet George "G" Yamazawa , and we hear a poem by G about a conflict involving language, identity, and his father's accent. In his poem, “The Bridge” (which recently went viral ) G reflects on his frustrations and fears about not being able to fully communicate in his parent’s native tongue, Japanese. “I love being American.” G says, “But the thought of your language being lost is something I’ve worried about and something that makes me feel disconnected.” In the poem, G explores his father’s Japanese accent as a reminder of his own internal struggles with language and identity in America. "The accent is the mark of an immigrant. It's a ruler with mile-long increments that measures the distance away from home." In
