Former Starbucks CEO Schultz says company needs to refocus on coffee as sales struggle

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz says the company's leaders should spend more time in stores and focus on coffee drinks as they work to turn around flagging sales. In a LinkedIn post, Schultz said many people had reached out to him after Starbucks reported weaker-than-expected quarterly sales and earnings. The Seattle coffee giant said revenue dropped 2% in the January-March period as store traffic slowed around the world. It was the first time since 2020 that the company saw a drop in quarterly revenue. Starbucks also lowered its sales and earnings guidance for its full fiscal year. Schultz, who bought Starbucks in 1987, is credited with growing the company into the global behemoth it has become with nearly 39,000 stores worldwide. He has been the chairman emeritus of the company since last fall when he stepped down from Starbucks' board. In his post, Schultz said senior leaders—including board members—need to spend more time talking to baristas in the company's stores. “The stores require a maniacal focus on the customer experience, through the eyes of a merchant. The answer does not lie in data but in the stores,” he said. Laxman Narasimhan, who became Starbucks' CEO last spring, has been working a half-day shift in Starbucks stores once a month. At some points in his post, Schultz seemed to be questioning Narasimhan's turnaround plans. In a conference call with investors, Narasimhan mentioned several new products he thinks will drive customers to stores later this year, including boba drinks, sugar-free options, and the brand's first energy beverage. But Schultz said coffee is what differentiates Starbucks and reinforces the company's premium positioning. Narasimhan did announce plans for coffee pop-up stores in the U.S. and elsewhere last month. Starbucks plans to use the stores to experiment with limited-edition coffee drinks, teach younger customers about coffee, and learn about customers' preferences. Schultz also said the company should update its mobile ordering and payment platform to “once again make it the uplifting experience it was designed to be.” Narasimhan said last fall that Starbucks is accelerating the introduction of new digital features and trying to personalize the customer experience within its app. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Based on the latest Novartis Earnings Call that took place on April 23, 2024, the company has provided insights into their strategic positioning and overall direction, specifically in relation to their role in the chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment market. During the call, CEO Dr. Vasant Narasimhan revealed an optimistic outlook for Novartis's progress, projecting that the company could perform at almost three times the level of a previous launch. This projection is based on Novartis's prior success navigating the complex cancer treatment landscape and the established popularity of their drug, Gleevec. With a two-thirds market share of first-line treatments for CML, Gleevec's effectiveness as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) has made it a linchpin in Novartis's treatment portfolio. The company also acknowledged that patients often face challenges accessing second-generation TKIs due to systemic barriers. In response to this, Novartis introduced a new drug, Scemblix, backed by a strong patent estate and comprehensive data set. As stated on the earnings call, Scemblix is positioned as a first alternative for CML patients with access issues, marking Novartis's strategic move to drive growth and extend their market impact.Furthermore, as revealed in the call, Novartis is not limited to focusing on third-line treatments. The company plans to strengthen its presence in second-line treatments also. Discussing potential uptake, Dr. Narasimhan observed, "We would expect, I would say, a modest early uptake because we would have to work through -- CML is one of the few cancer areas that's currently contracted. ... we believe that given the overall data set that we'll share at ASCO that it should be able to drive very strong uptake." This perspective illustrates Novartis's aim to reach more of the CML treatment community.Additionally, Medicare's exclusion from Novartis's lifecycle management agreements was signaled out on the call, representing a strategic move that could significantly shape CML treatment options. This exclusion opens up additional treatment possibilities beyond generic imatinib for a sizeable group of CML patients, highlighting yet another way Novartis anticipates influencing the market dynamics of CML treatments. In summary, Novartis's earnings call outlined several strategic considerations, including tackling access problems, exploring new market segments, and solidifying their product lineup. These efforts demonstrate Novartis's focused attempt to maintain and potentially enhance their role within the CML treatment spectrum, albeit tempered by the reality of the unknown complexities within the healthcare landscape. What's the big news from Starbucks' Q1 earnings call? Hint: it has to do with delivery

Although the first quarter is usually one of the highest-performing times of the year for Starbucks — including both pumpkin spice and red cup season — Starbucks saw a traffic downturn for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2023, with North America comparable sales up only 5%, driven mostly by menu price increases.During the Starbucks earnings call on Tuesday, CEO Laxman Narasimhan pointed to the Israel-Palestine conflict as a source of friction in both the Middle Eastern markets and in the U.S., where there have been calls for boycotts of Starbucks from supporters on both sides of the conflict. Narasimhan also explained that slower spending in China contributed to headwinds for the quarter — an issue that was highlighted by Luckin Coffee overtaking Starbucks as the number one coffee chain in China this November.

Laxman Narasimhan is six months into being CEO of the world's most ubiquitous coffee shop. Narasimhan took over Starbucks from Howard Schultz in March of 2023. Before stepping into the CEO's office, he completed a six month immersion in Starbucks cafes around the country, where he learned the ins and outs of making each customer's favorite drinks while also constructing a vision for the future of the company. In April of this year, Narasimhan sent out a letter with a revised company mission statement highlighting the need to nurture human connection while also promising big returns for shareholders. Those big returns may come in part from the company's plans to open 10,000 more stores across the globe by 2025. In this episode of Leadership Next, Narasimhan joins hosts Alan Murray and Michal Lev-Ram to talk about how his six month immersion is informing his leadership of Starbucks. He also shares more details about Starbucks' plans for growth and why this is the right time to open thousands of new stores around the world. Additionally, Narasimhan gives his take on the state of Chinese and Western relations, and how that affects Starbucks' business. Woven throughout the conversation is how his personal story of growing up in India impacts his approach to leadership. Leadership Next is powered by Deloitte.

New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who took the reins from controversial Starbucks founder and multi-time CEO Howard Schultz in March 2023, gained a lot of internal company and external media attention for training for six months as a barista in the leadup to the company's executive leadership change. As it turns out, Narasimhan's training as a barista and observation of multiple stores was the basis for new changes that he will be rolling out to make store-level operations easier and more efficient. In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal, Narasimhan spoke about his journey toward learning how to make the proper latte, how he often made mistakes during his training period, and how there seemed to always be an undercurrent of tension and anxiety in many high-traffic stores, especially when it comes to keeping up with orders. In one store, Narasimhan said that he had to repeatedly apologize to customers after a store ran out of breakfast sandwiches, and noted the pressure of a café manager calling out the average time it was taking to process orders in another store. Narasimhan even burnt his hand on too-hot melted cheese while trying to rush an order.

New Starbucks CEO plans to work in stores monthly

Starbucks' new CEO Laxman Narasimhan says he plans to work a half-day shift once a month in one of the company's stores in an effort to stay close to its culture and customers. Narasimhan, who took the reins as CEO, said in a letter to Starbucks' employees that he also expects the company's leadership team to be connected and engaged in stores. Having a CEO work in stores is new for Seattle-based Starbucks, but not unprecedented among big companies. DoorDash CEO Tony Xu and his executive team make DoorDash deliveries once a month, for example. Narasimhan, 55, issued the letter just prior to the company's annual meeting, which was held virtually. The former PepsiCo executive has spent six months immersing himself in Starbucks, earning his barista certification as well as visiting stores, farms and manufacturing centers across the world. “I felt it was very important to start as a barista. I wanted to really understand what they do and how they do it,” Narasimhan said in comments emailed to The Associated Press. “I've loved and learned so much about the retail experience from working in our stores, and can now make an excellent French press if I do say so myself.” Narasimhan said he would like to see Starbucks evolve into a more global company, be less wasteful and move with greater speed. Narasimhan succeeds longtime Starbucks leader Howard Schultz, who came out of retirement last spring to serve as interim CEO while the company searched for a new chief executive. Schultz will remain on the company's board. Some investors were unhappy with that move, saying Starbucks should have had a more robust succession plan in place when former CEO Kevin Johnson retired April 2022. Among the shareholder proposals investors voted on was one that would require Starbucks' board to begin succession planning at least three years before an expected transition.
