From book bans to changing classes and educational requirements, what children are learning in the classroom will be different this year. “I think this is going to be a very strange year, simply because people do not know what's happening,” University of Central Florida history professor and News 6 Political Analyst Jim Clark said. “Teachers are unsure. Administrators are unsure. You have one district doing one thing and another district doing another thing and I think there are just so many red flags flying that it's going to be a strange year.” One point of difference this year focuses on AP Psychology. There was a battle over the coursework and any potential focus on gender identity which encouraged some schools to drop it right before classes began. Matt Austin shared on Florida's Fourth Estate that his daughter was supposed to be in the class and was stuck in the middle wondering what the school district would decide. “My kid has been like, ‘Oh, I'm in the class, I'm out of the class, I'm in the class, I'm out, what am I gonna do?' and this is after the schedules have already come out,” Austin said. This isn't the first class caught in the middle of the political debate over education. “Earlier we had the controversy over the AP History exam, which is still going on, so for students that want to take these, this is a troubled time,” Clark said. In addition to focusing on coursework, lawmakers are also working to rid school libraries of books that “depict or describe sexual conduct.” That means librarians must now inspect over a million books. Ginger Gadsden pointed out it's not just Florida politicians focused on the classroom. “There are a number of states, led by Iowa, that see Florida as the role model, and the governor there is an admirer of Gov. Tra’Lisha (Davis) Renteria is a Longwood Academy High School graduate and former student in Katie’s AP History class.  A first generation college student trying to figure out life, Tra’Lisha was struggling in science and failed Neurobiology her sophomore year. This pivotal moment caused Tra’Lisha to question why she wanted to be a doctor, and realize that this dream was given to her, but not her own. Instead of quitting college, she picked up her pen and rewrote her story as an English major. Which makes perfect sense to me, because she is a fantastic writer! Junior and senior year Tra’Lisha got involved on campus, and senior year she signed up for a leadership program where she discovered her true passion--leading others on their path to greatness!  After Tra’Lisha graduated, she spent her gap year in Americorp before getting her masters in organizational leadership. As an introvert, Tra’Lisha brings a unique perspective to leadership development. If you don't know, Breonna Taylor was in bed, sleeping, when three cops murdered her in her own home. As Keith Ellison, Attorney General of Minneapolis said after the murder of George Floyd "There needs to be deep systemic change." That change comes from the very top (and protest of course), with voting for people like Janos Marton. Sometimes our call into education is as simple as a voice that says, “Be a teacher.” That was the case with Susan Thompson, academic dean at University High School in Tolleson, Arizona. Though she’s retiring at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, she’s still in the trenches and working with kids daily. The way she works so hard to buck the status quo of the traditional education model is inspiring! In this episode, Susan offers an overview of how University High went from a school to get students who were falling behind ready for college to a highly sought after, rigorous option for diverse and motivated students. In fact, the school regularly ranks on the US News and World Report’s list of top high schools nationally while primarily enrolling students from the immediate community (rather than cherry-picking only high achievers). In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain to share my personal story with you. I want to tell you what I actually did to scale my business. It was arguably the worst experience with a book I’d had up to that moment. I was so lost and frustrated. I wanted to read the classics so badly. I could tell there was something amazing there that was hidden from me. But I couldn’t get to it. Fast-forward ten years or so, and I discover audiobooks. It was literally life changing. Suddenly, the whole world of the classics is open to me, and I can enjoy The Three Musketeers, David Copperfield, Jane Eyre, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. All of these stories I had always wanted to read, I could now enjoy with a little help from a narrator. I want to other kids who might be struggling to have the same experience. So that’s why I’m working on an initiative to make my library of Classic Tales free for all public schools. It’s a tricky plan, but I really don’t want other kids to struggle like I did. Every month, she focuses the nationwide group on a political, educational, or philanthropic topic around women’s equality and provides ways to take action. Additionally, Chelsey Goodan is a screenwriter in Hollywood, answering the plea for movies with vibrant, tenacious, and complex female-driven stories. Embracing many facets of the entertainment industry, she has worked on a wide range of films such as Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, Jim Carrey’s The Number 23, and Judd Apatow’s Superbad. All of her experiences in film have supremely motivated her to lead the charge in increasing women’s representation. Moreover, her written articles often focus on how women’s progress intersects with men, whether that's turning the infamous former pick-up artist Neil Strauss, author of The Game, into a feminist, interviewing Tony Porter for Lenny Letter, or igniting conversation through humor in her article, “Can I Be the Dad?” On top of it all, Chelsey has run her own tutoring business for the last nine years. Guiding students 8-22 years old, Chelsey assists in everything from Calculus homework to college applications. She specializes in AP History classes and finds that the lessons always inspire her writing and activism since society is so prone to repeat mistakes. Her time spent prepping a big test like the ACT is often underscored by a deep mentorship of her students. Always working to be a positive role model, she finds great meaning from the moments when her teenage girls come to her with their concerns ranging from eating disorders to birth control. Her young boys often share their fears with her first, knowing she’ll have their back when they’re up against stressful parental pressure or an impending bad grade. She continues this mentorship long after she’s finished tutoring them. Chelsey recently became a Board Member for the nonprofit, A CALL TO MEN, which educates and activates men and boys to be a part of the solution in preventing violence and discrimination against women. She organizes their annual Los Angeles fundraiser, which she will host alongside Will Forte, David Wain, Sean Gunn, and Moon Zappa this year. A CALL TO MEN is now working with the Time’s Up leadership to engage men in entertainment to use their influence to advocate for equality. All of her life, Chelsey has been volunteering for equality-based causes, and organizing fundraising events. She grew up in Colorado Springs, graduated from New York University, married Music Producer Charles Goodan, and currently resides in Los Angeles. Who do you call if you have concerns about your child's teacher, or you are not happy with the curriculum, or don't think the requirements for AP History are fair? The answer is - it depends. Recently Bo landed and interview with one of my heroes, Coach Jesse Parker. He has won more football games than any coach in Arizona history. He was also the AP History teacher.
