Did somebody say podcast cohort? We were excited to hear the news that ABC announced that they're doing a special podcast series called Behind The Table, based on The View. They will have past View cohosts talking about their time on The View, with behind the scenes stories and the hosts spilling the tea on the many controversies over the years. Obviously ABC is doing this because we have recently been thirsting for our View-like podcast panel services, where we bring together experts who share a similar audience to speak panel style, like a fireside chat. September 14th - check it out if you want to catch Meredith Vieira, Lisa Ling, and all your other faves! Riot if not McPizza McDonalds Canada recently posted a teaser saying they were bringing back a fan favourite, immediately leading the nostalgic internet to assume they were reviving the popular McPizza from the 80s. Turns out this was not the case, and what ensued was a hilarious thread of disappointed people, great (slightly panicked) marketing from McD's, and a lot of newsjacking from other companies. Oh yeah, and it's actually spicy McNuggets coming back. On another spicy note? Mountain Dew and Flaming Hot Cheetos have teamed up to make a spicy monstrosity of a beverage. As Will says, Mountain Dew? More like Mountain Don't. Pearl Milling Company Pearl Milling Company, previously known as Aunt Jemima, has released their first ad since their huge rebranding from a long-time look that really smacked of racism. This ad features several black families enjoying the food they've made. No word on how sales have been, but we're watching closely to see how this works out for them. Zoom Doom DYK that since remote working has been the norm, 1 in 4 bosses have had to fire someone for some kind of inappropriate Zoom behaviour, and most have had to dole out some discipline over poor Zoom etiquette? While things have been a bit more relaxed in general considering the circumstances (who really wears “hard pants” on these calls, amiright?), some people have slipped a little too far and execs and clients aren't digging it. Not only that, evidently the higher ups don't totally trust that work is getting done effectively enough at home either. Take it from some remote working experts - stay professional, stay on task, and just wear something - anything, please - on your bottom half. Empowering or demeaning? If you've been around for a while, you've definitely heard the term ”girl boss”. Love it or hate it, it's been the war cry of women everywhere who have worked to be seen as equal to men in the same situations. Adaptive Fashion for the win In the leadup to New York Fashion Week, we're seeing a great trend of designers showcasing their inclusive designs. It's not just about race and religion either. These designers are also creating “adaptive fashion” - clothes that are accessible to those with physical disabilities.

In this installment of the 17Twenty podcast, Will Pender joins the guys in the studio. Will is the new Gulf States President at Adolfson & Peterson Construction, a leading construction management and contracting firms in the U.S founded in 1946.The guys talk about growing up between Florida and Indiana, his eventual move to Texas (as fast as he could), and his recent transition to Adolfson & Peterson. They talk about the extended interview process for the job, the roundtable Q&A sessions with each of the various offices, and how the interview process vets out the Adolfson & Peterson culture. As Will looks at the "first 100 days" we talk through some observations about the company, how conversations with employees are helping to form the future of Adolfson & Peterson, and the power of the "better if" statements. These "better if" statements help empower people so that they can be the best that they can be.In discussing the rise to the Gulf States President at Adolfson & Peterson Construction, Will talks about the "we want Will" mindset he kept as he worked his way up. This is a great mindset to make sure you're on the forefront of the mind of your clients, whether internal or external to your organization. As usual, there are great nuggets of wisdom all throughout this episode as you prepare yourself to win the week.
Climate change is affecting the ecosystems that support life and everything we depend on. The United Nations declared 2021 to 2030 the ‘Decade of Ecosystem Restoration', and there is a global effort to restore ecosystems and the many benefits they provide, from enhancing food security and safe water to biodiversity. In this episode, we're talking about the Pacific Region and how Engineering With Nature can learn from and add value to innovative ecosystem restoration, conservation, disaster management efforts, and infrastructure development. Our guests are Todd Bridges, Senior Research Scientist for Environmental Science with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Lead for EWN; Anita van Breda, Senior Director, Environment and Disaster Management, World Wildlife Fund; and William Glamore, Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow at the Water Research Laboratory, UNSW Sydney, Australia. EWN can learn many lessons from the Pacific region in terms of its size, scale, and its diversity in nature and cultures. In the Pacific alone, there are about 25,000 islands. The Pacific Ocean covers 32% of the total surface area of the earth. The 11 Pacific Island countries that are members of the World Bank have a combined population of 2.3 million spread over 15% of the Earth's surface. Pacific Island nations are facing critical challenges from climate change and sea level rise. The Pacific and Indian Oceans together cover almost half the surface area of the earth. If you add Asia, which is the largest continent, most of the world is in the Pacific and Asian region. Australia itself is a huge island continent. As Will points out, the coastline of one Australian state is equivalent to the entire U.S. East and West Coasts combined! It's a land of extremes with searing heat, long droughts broken up by major floods, and waves of cold Antarctic blasts. Climate change is further compounding these effects, and the impacts are being felt through massive coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, disastrous wildfires along the East Coast, and other large-scale climate effects. As Anita notes, “The Pacific people have a strong attachment to land, not just as an economic commodity, but as a strong tie to their history and culture, their sense of who they are as a people. This presents a unique opportunity to use natural and nature-based features and the services they provide for local communities.” She adds, “Nature is such a fundamental part of who we are as people. Even at the smallest scale of the individual household level, it is a powerful thing. We should include that when we think about tackling big, systemic problems at landscape-level scale.” As Todd describes it, “There's tremendous diversity in context physically, but also culturally, that dwarfs the landscape and cultural diversity we have in North America or even in Europe. So how do we, consistent with Engineering With Nature, follow Mother Nature's lead in composing solutions for these challenges rather than trying to impose and control Mother Nature with completely artificial solutions?” Will notes that when Europeans settled Australasia and the Pacific, they applied a Eurocentric, one-size-fits-all view of the world. “Today I sit at the same desk as people who, 50 or 60 years ago, built the traditional dams, dykes, levees and canals. Now I'm trying to de-engineer those structures and make them more effectively engineered with nature.” He describes his early work as a PhD student faced with the challenge of acidic floodplains and how nature-based solutions were needed to solve the problem at scale. While this initial research helped solve the acid problem, he also quickly realized that it provided co-benefits of improved water quality, reduced flood risk, increased aquaculture, and blue carbon habitat. In this podcast, Will describes how his EcoEng team has grown this research from small test sites to huge scale creation projects and how he is now trying to create a wetland-based economy for the future. Anita's work at the World Wildlife Fund often has her thinking about how she and her team of environmental scientists can work more successfully with engineers like Will, as well as with humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross and others. Her key objectives “are to better understand each other's perspectives, timing, and goals, and to train the next generation of practitioners to be able to better work together by breaking down our institutional silos so they can address a really challenging future together”. As we wrap up Part 1, Todd notes that the value of taking what has been learned in the Pacific Region and applying it more broadly must focus on addressing not only the challenges faced by the islands, but also the connection between people and nature and how important nature is to people and people are to nature. “If we respect Mother Nature, I think she will respect us back, and we will find solutions to many of these very tangled and difficult challenges that we confront around the world.” Related Links: EWN Website ERDC Website Todd Bridges at LinkedIn Todd Bridges at EWN Anita van Breda at LinkedIn Anita van Breda at World Wildlife Fund William Glamore at LinkedIn William Glamore's Publications on Google Scholar William Glamore at UNSW Water Research Laboratory EWN NNBF Guidelines Project Environment and Disaster Management Webpage UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration An Introduction to the Global Sand Crisis The Flood Green Guide Podcast Series Natural and Nature-Based Flood Management: A Green Guide Nature-Based Solutions for Water-Related Disasters Tomago Wetland Restoration Project (Australia) Big Swamp Restoration Project (Australia) Oyster Reef Restoration Project (Australia) Climate Change and Estuaries Coastal Wetlands Can Be Saved From Sea Level Rise by Recreating Past Tidal Regimes
Produced by Alex Greer and directed by Joe Saunders, THE PENNY BLACK is a documentary that sounds like it was written by the best of mystery writers. When Will is handed a mysterious package from his neighbour and asked to watch it, he never imagined that it would contain a million-dollar stamp collection. As Will searches for the truth about the package, so too does the film question whether or not he's as innocent as they once thought. In this 1on1, we speak to Greer and Saunders about what we value, what they were thinking throughout the process and what they think they would've done in the same situation.

For this COVID-19 Roundtable, it probably won’t surprise you at all that we’re going to talk quite a bit about vaccines. We are also going to talk about ASU’s latest predictive modeling results regarding the next four months, and we’re going to paint a picture of how hospitals and health care professionals are trying to process and recover from a very stressful time. Plus, did you ever think a podcast focused on COVID would also talk about pizza boxes? In this episode we will, in fact, check that box. We have reached a state of pseudo-balance. Arizona is still experiencing a moderate to substantial rate of new COVID cases from the much more transmissible B.1.1.7 variant. The balance point comes from a combination of people who have already COVID and those who are vaccinated. There is no guarantee that balance will hold. What’s required is finding ways to get more and more Arizonans vaccinated. As Will notes, we’ll get to herd immunity, but the question is when. And how. So let’s get to it. It’s time to talk about putting all the puzzle pieces together, taking pizza boxes apart, getting people off of fences, and getting shots into arms as of May 10, 2021.
On this episode, we welcome Mike Behrmann, Director of Security at Blumira to talk with Cybrary's Director of Content, Will Carlson, about Workforce Development. Next up in our awards season mini-series is an insight into the creation of one of the most enchanting animations in recent memory. Wolfwalkers is the latest gorgeously-drawn and beautifully-told adventure from Irish studio Cartoon Saloon. It follows a young named Robyn, living in 17th century Kilkenny. One day while exploring forbidden woodland, she meets Mebh: a free-spirited girl by day with the ability to transform into a wolf. The pair join forces to search for Mebh’s missing mother, uncovering secrets along the way that park a tense standoff between the townsfolk, Robyn’s father, the sinister Lord Protector and Mebh’s tribe of wolves. Inspired by Irish folklore, screenwriter Will Collins wrote the film based on a story by the film’s directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart. On the surface it’s a children’s fairytale, full of adorable animal sidekicks and flourishing forests where there’s adventure to be had and magic at every turn. Look deeper into this densely layered drama, however, and you’ll also find environmental worry, coming-of-age excitement, exploration of society’s fear of the “other” and empowering messages about choosing your own path in life. Wolfwalkers almost was a very different movie. As Will reveals in this episode, the film’s creative team originally flirted with a much darker story, in which Mebh’s mother is discovered dead and Robyn is shot by her own father. We get into all of those abandoned plot threads in this episode, as well as the real-life historical darkness underpinning this magical tale.As you may have already guessed, this is a spoiler-filled discussion, so we highly recommend watching Wolfwalkers before listening. Support for this episode comes from Arc Studio – the beautifully-designed screenwriting programme whose intuitive interface and host of innovative features helps you get the most out of your writing time – and Coverfly, who curate the best screenwriting talent-discovery programs into one place and connect emerging screenwriters with industry professionals who can bring their ideas to screen.Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies. An estimated 95% of colleges and universities with more than 2,500 students operate their own law enforcement agencies. As WILL's Lee Gaines reports, there's a growing movement on campuses across the U.S. to defund and disband those police departments. Also, soaring COVID-19 caseloads in Lebanon are compounding an economic crisis there that has sparked protests. Borzou Daragahi, international correspondent for The Independent, has more.
Will Berson had been haunted by the story of the murder of Black Panthers leader Fred Hampton by police since his hippy parents told it to him as a child. As Will watched events like the Ferguson riots unfold he realized Fred Hampton's story had to be told. After writing the script as a spec he discovered writer/director Shaka King had been working on the same story, and together they joined forces to make the powerful Judas and the Black Messiah. On this episode of Write On, Will Berson and guest host Sade' Sellers discuss Berson’s roots in comedy writing and his particular approach to historical drama: “Essential truths are more important to me than historical facts.” He talks about writing strong female characters, what it is like to write with multiple collaborators, and how to manage a career in Hollywood. “My advice would be to play the game a little more. Just realize how ridiculous this town is and embrace it. Act like you're in an improv scene and just go with the flow.” Judas and the Black Messiah releases in theaters and on HBO Max on February 12. When asked about what he does for a living, Will Bowman answers, “Professionally, I am three things.” Will is a management consultant (full time), a real estate agent, and a real estate investor. But that wasn’t always the case. The advice given to many aspiring real estate investors is to find good deals and find someone with money to help fund those deals. If we were to put Will in this example, he would be the one with money to help fund the deal. Initially, Will had no intention of ever investing in real estate. It wasn’t until his childhood friend, Austin Carrol (see Episode 53), approached him and introduced him to the business. What they quickly realized was how much they complimented each other’s strengths. From there, a partnership was born and they each have not looked back since. Shortly thereafter, along with his partnership and working full time, Will began venturing out on his own and purchased his own rentals as well. Up to date, he has acquired a total of 14 units, and is almost out of corporate America. Going forward, he plans to invest in real estate full time, grow his real estate sales team, and become an even stronger organization. Takeaways from our conversation with Will: 1) Stay in the zone. When purchasing (and occasionally selling) a property of any kind, make sure to do your diligence on the zoning of not only the property you are purchasing, but also the zoning of the neighboring in which you’re purchasing. Markets shift constantly, and cities have to keep up with the changes. One way they do this is by changing the zoning of certain areas. That means properties that haven’t been sold in a long time have a good chance that they do not have the same zoning as they once did. To save yourself the trouble in the future, always check the zoning of the property (and neighborhood) and plan accordingly. Quick tip: When doing conversions or additions, this is another time to consider such a topic. Do not overlook code requirements and zoning limits. Making such structural changes to a property may increase your ROI, but it can also inhibit your available exit strategies. 2) Being your own general contractor. What this means is you, as the owner/landlord, take the role and responsibility of hiring subcontractors to complete jobs and tasks as a regular general contractor would. As Will notes, this line of work isn’t for everyone. It takes time, knowledge, and constant attention and communication. On the flip side, the experience can be very empowering and educational. So how can you be a successful general contractor for your properties? As per Will, figure what things cost. Develop your expertise and understanding of labor and materials. Secondly, hire out small tasks. Test your subcontractors with small jobs first and graduate them into larger and larger projects, similar to how your investments will probably go anyway (meaning, your first property probably won’t be a complete tear down). Progress your general contracting skills along with the intensity of your rehabs. And finally, manage and monitor your projects. Stay in constant contact with your subcontractors and take the time to physically visit the work site (or have someone visit the work site for you). Verify jobs are being done correctly, properly, and in a timely manner. 3) Nurturing partnerships. A big part of how Will go to where he is today is thanks to his partnership. Lucky for him, he was able to find someone who suited his strengths and compensated his weaknesses. However, partnerships are much more than that. At the end of the day, you’re dealing with another human being. That means human errors are bound to occur. Do not expect your partner to never make mistakes. That will only lead to disappointment and chaos. Rather, develop a culture of transparency and responsibility, both for yourself and one another. That is how you will mitigate issues and become successful long term. 4) Hospitality services on top of being a landlord. Will also runs an AirBNB unit in his basement. With this kind of investment, Will quickly learned that you aren’t simply managing a tenant, you are also operating a hospitality business. That means that along with the regular duties of maintaining and caring for a unit, you are also expected to deliver a satisfactory experience for your guests. However, with the right systems, most of the time, Will says, “You don’t even notice people are there.” If Will could go back and talk to his 16 year old self, he’d tell him, “Thank you,” for the relationships that he’s nurtured and the personal responsibility that he’s developed over the years. An unexpected benefit of real estate investing, Will said, was being able to be a part of a community, not just a market. And with that community, he’s built a lot of friendships that transcend real estate. A piece of advice Will would tell his friends looking to get started in real estate would be to know your goal(s) and just get into the game. Build a surplus of capital, preserve that capital, and recuperate that capital as quickly as possible. Will recommends establishing a Pro Account with Home Depot to not only get discounts, but have a better customer experience. This is especially helpful if you do (or are planning to do) a lot of renovations. Will recommends reading Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike by Phil Knight to help you find the strength to push through the challenges when times get tough. Plant-Based diet...Celery Juice & Bone Broth....Why you hear so many Doctors recommending complete opposite diets...How fiber and your microbiome are crucial in understanding how to optimize gut health...why endurance athletes should take gut health seriously...These are a few of the amazing topics we cover in today's podcast! Today joining us is the Gut Health MD, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz to talk the how athletes can improve their performance through optimizing Gut Health. Now Will is days away from releasing his new book, Fiber Fueled, which outlines a Plant-Based Gut Health Program so we caught him at a perfect time to pick his brain on optimizing gut health. This is an important topic for a number of reasons. When you think of it from the performance point of view, endurance athletes eat way more calories a day than the average person. Not only that, athletes will need to resort to some less-than-optimal foods during our workouts to fuel our bodies. And when we workout we put our bodies in a sympathetic/fight-or-flight state, which means we’ve left our parasympathetic/rest-and-digest state. So in these long workouts we are continuously neglecting our gut health by shutting our digestive systems down and filling it with tons of carbs and electrolytes. Now from the health point of view, our gut accounts for up to 70% of our immune system and plays a vital role in our overall health and longevity. His book has several hundred science-backed studies showing how a Plant-based approach can completely revamp your microbiome, improve your digestive health, which in turn will make you healthier AND a better athlete. As Will describes in his book, Fiber Fueled isn’t a quick fix or diet, it’s a lifestyle trajectory that heals. This is an excellent podcast and the privilege is all mine to be speaking him! Now, let’s get into it! Let’s get into it.

The Masterson Method with Will Friday Will Friday is a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner. I ran across Will Friday at the Skills of the Rancho this summer. The Skills celebrates the tradition of the Californio Bridlehorse. I was walking around the stables when I saw this man doing what looked like a cross between chiropractic and massage on a horse in the breezeway. I stood and watched for a while and found the procedure fascinating. As Will skillfully tugged, pulled, and laid his fingers on the horse, I could see the horse relax. In our short conversation that day, Will said he was trying to let the horse release tension and soreness in his body using the Masterson Method. The Masterson Method, developed by horseman Jim Masterson, is a systematic way of releasing tension and soreness in horses. The procedure can last between 1 and 2 hours as the practitioner places fingers along the horse's body looking for areas of tension and soreness. I contacted Will at his company Performance Equine BodyWork. He invited me to a Parelli clinic that was being hosted by one of his clients at the 3L Ranch. Owners of the ranch, Maurice Thibault and Susan Nelson, invited me to come up and observe the clinic and watch Will work on some of their clinic horses. Both Maurice and Susan are 4-Star Parelli Professionals. Our government and legal system as a whole will not, and cannot, do it for us. As the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund has stated: “Each municipality is a match, and each instance of a law being overturned as violative of these legal doctrines is an opportunity for people to see how the structure actually functions. This does the necessary work of penetrating the denial, piercing the illusion of democracy, and removing the blinders that prevent a large majority of people from seeing the reality on the ground.” As Will elaborates in this interview, the United States legal system is not designed to effectively protect human and non-human communities from ecologically destructive projects. Instead, as Will explains, it exists primarily “to make it near impossible for the citizenry to oppose those projects” through legal means. This assertion can be demonstrated to be true by examining numerous legal cases that have come up in the last several decades in communities around US -- perhaps most dramatically by the community of Toledo, Ohio in their efforts to end the proliferation of toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie — the region’s main source of potable water. In response to this environmental crisis, the community organized to have a “Lake Erie Bill of Rights” on the ballot in their local elections. If enacted, the legislation would effectively grant legal rights to a natural entity (Lake Erie), and would work to protect the lake and the residents of Toledo from the destructive impacts of industrial agricultural runoff (which produces toxic algae blooms as a byproduct). As Will explains in detail, this campaign, in spite of being extremely well organized, well funded, legally and ethically sound, and having gained enough votes in the election, was shut down by the very legal processes that the community of Toledo relied upon for the success their campaign. This case, unfortunately, is not unique. Will Falk is a writer, lawyer, and environmental activist. [INTRO: 8:30] In this episode I speak with lawyer and radical environmental activist Will Falk. In this discussion, Will examines the United States legal system, in particular environmental law, and the difficult realities communities around the US continuously face when it comes to protecting natural entities (lakes, rivers, forests, etc.) from ecologically destructive government and corporate projects. As Will elaborates in this interview, the United States legal system is not designed to effectively protect human and non-human communities from ecologically destructive projects. Instead, as Will explains, it exists primarily “to make it near impossible for the citizenry to oppose those projects” through legal means.* This assertion can be demonstrated to be true by examining numerous legal cases that have come up in the last several decades in communities around US -- perhaps most dramatically by the community of Toledo, Ohio in their efforts to end the proliferation of toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie — the region’s main source of potable water. After expounding on the details of this case, Will explains what must actually be done to halt the pervasive and ongoing destruction of the living systems of the planet. Our government and legal system as a whole will not, and cannot, do it for us. As the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund has stated: “Each municipality is a match, and each instance of a law being overturned as violative of these legal doctrines is an opportunity for people to see how the structure actually functions. Will O'Brien took over the podcast today and brought a professional standard to the show. Will was an Infantry Officer, who's excellent leadership skills he refocused and is now applying, in the true nature of a Volunteer, to the minds of our youth in a classroom environment. Will points out key areas that Veterans need to think about if they are thinking about making a second career out of teaching. The strength of this episode is built within these areas: 1) Understand your military service and work through all mental health and service related issues. 2) Focus on a teaching school that is going to accredit you for the state that you are planning on teaching and living in. Set up the conditions for the final shot. 3) Discover what grade your skills and personality match with. Go on student teacher visits, get as much exposure that you can to help you "see" the environment you are going to be working in. 4) Defining your passion in the subject that you teach, this can be a sticking point. As Will points out, wanting to be a history or gym teacher is great, put those positions are hard to get, don't let this deter you, come in where you can and make your moves through your strengths. 5) Getting hired on can be an easy to hard process. Along with getting your certifications, you need to network. Call Veterans and see if they know Veterans or family that are in the system you're applying. NETWORK it!! 6) The personal nature of teaching has the potential to be a real life changer. Will brings his dedication to teaching to the whole episode, but he really understands and performs his duties far beyond what is normal. Know your students as you did those you led in the military, get into their lives and be a force of change for the good. Amazing episode and once again, a great chat with a truly great American and friend. HOV©2019

When the smoked cleared, the only witnesses left alive were dogs and babies. “What Had Happened Was” host Amelia Robinson sat down with Will Garbe, an investigative reporter for the Dayton Daily News and WHIO-TV, for an unusual episode of the podcast. Will has been reporting on the Pike County murders for two years and recently returned from a hunting trip there with local residents. He and Amelia discuss what is known and what investigators think they know about the case in which eight members of a family where murdered in four different locations on the same night. Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine, the state’s next governor, recently announced charges against four members of a Pike County. Investigators say the Wagners - a husband, his wife and two adult sons - gunned down, Christopher Rhoden Jr.; Christopher Rhoden Sr., Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden; Dana Lynn Rhoden; Gary Rhoden; Hanna May Rhoden; Hannah Hazel Gilley and Kenneth Rhoden. The shocking case has seen several twists and turns. As Will explains in the podcast, things are now just getting started. There have been rumors about a drug cartel, arrested grandmothers and an alleged custody dispute in this tragic case.

In this passion-fueled conversation we reflect on some deeper realizations that have struck us recently. A lot of our discussion generates a general yet powerful recommendation, to become very curious. Do so early, and often, and especially if you're going into a service industry. If you're curious, you'll be more likely to build awareness of the influences of business and how it can interact with our behaviors and lives. Some very wise words are shared by Will in this episode in particular. If were going to passionately express our observation of a struggle we've gone through, we might as well deliver some action steps in case others find themselves also struggling. Will highlights 3 key business principles that, when mastered, can make any person more valuable to a business (in terms of employment-more hirable). The funny thing is, you don't even really have to master these functions, just be better than some others are and you can help them. Generate new leads or potential customers Convert leads or potential customers into customers Retain customers for repeated service When do we really learn how the basics of all that works? As Will and Nick describe, its never too late to learn. Check out the facebook group "Healthcare Digital Marketing" with Will and Alex Engar, those two are producing some incredible content and sharing solutions that can take your career to another level.

Episode 110 celebrates the American tradition of Thanksgiving with the 80’s slasher, “Blood Rage”(1987). Before getting into the featured attraction, your hosts talk about recently watched movies, some of which show the rubber shark waaaaaay too much. In some cases, literally. Have you ever pondered how Bill Paxton would’ve done as Jack Torrence in “The Shining”? Maybe you should. Then, that which cannot be ignored, “Blood Rage” is discussed. Jolyon watched it, Richard watched it and Will watched "Blood Rage”…twice! This is a movie that delivers on the nudity and the gore, which is what you’d ask of any decent 80’s slasher. The individual victims may not have a great sense of urgency when trying to escape the killer, but at least they team up to make a great body count! As Will puts it: “This is just the kind of crap I would’ve loved at age 12”. So, grab a seat at the card table, dish up some turkey and stuffing, but be careful, because that’s not cranberry sauce!!! Last time, the group headed back to Vallaki to bury one of the Martikovs and then did a few things on their own. As Will got a shave and a haircut (two bits!), a comb (it's not just a stick!), and some information about what had been happening while the party was at the Wizard of Wines, the rest of the party discovered they had been invited to a dinner with the burgomaster. Then Will paid a visit to Blinsky and found that the toymaker was having some sort of stupid problem that they'll probably have to fix - other than the problems the guy already has. This week on StoryWeb: Tim Burton’s film Big Fish. A witch. A giant. A werewolf. Conjoined twins. Daring feats of strength. A magical town. Tim Burton’s 2003 film, Big Fish, has it all. Based on Daniel Wallace’s 1998 novel of the same name, the film stars Albert Finney, Ewan McGregor, Steve Buscemi, Danny DeVito, Jessica Lange, and a large cast of other actors. It is a delightful, fantastic, over-the-top spectacle of a small Southern traveling circus, complete with “freaks,” as they are often known. It also tells the story of Spectre, a fairy-tale, utopian version of a small town in Alabama. Big Fish is also a tale within a tale, the story of a young man, Will Bloom, saying goodbye to his elderly, dying father, Edward. When Will was a boy, Edward regaled him with one fantastic story after another – and he continues the outlandish tall tales on his deathbed. Will, who had been caught in the tales as a child, eventually came to believe his father was a liar, that he’d spun crazy yarns to make himself look larger than life and perhaps to hide the secrets of his real life. Most of the film is the reconstructed telling of Edward’s fantastic, dreamlike world, the stuff of myth and legend. Swept along with the story, the viewer – as Will had as a boy – wants to believe, but it all just seems so far-fetched. Is it real? Is it make-believe? Or is it something in between? You’ll have to watch the film – all the way through to the end – and then decide for yourself. In the meantime, I will say that – true or not – Big Fish is a marvelous, wonderful tale of an unlikely cast of characters you won’t soon forget. It’s also a beautiful, if emotionally challenging exploration of a father-son relationship. Will Edward and Will come to an understanding of each other in time? Will Will forgive his father’s tall tales, his penchant for what can only be called Southern gothic storytelling? StoryWeb, of course, celebrates all things storytelling – and Edward Bloom is a storyteller par excellence. His tales raise the age-old question: Is the story true – or is it “just” a story? By film’s end, you may be inclined to believe, as Edward clearly does, that truth and imagination, story and fact are inextricably tied up together. As Will says, “In telling the story of my father’s life, it’s impossible to separate the fact from the fiction, the man from the myth. It doesn’t always make sense, but that’s the kind of story this is.” The film is available on DVD, and the entire script is online. You might find it fun to explore the locations used in the filming of Big Fish. And of course, you’ll want to stop by Tim Burton’s official website. (Be forewarned: it’s tricky to navigate this one-of-a-kind website!) As Edward tells Will, “Most men will tell you a story straight through. It won’t be complicated, but it won’t be interesting either.” Big Fish is delightfully complicated and very, very interesting. Watch it – you won’t be disappointed! Visit the storyweb.com/burton for links to all these resources and to watch the trailer for Big Fish. It will give you a taste of the fantastical yarns Edward Bloom spins.

Following the course of the Collider through the French and Swiss countryside, Will stops at regular intervals to descend to the tunnel below and view the experiments. As Will gets close to completing his circuit, he visits Voltaire's chateau and an abandoned CERN experiment. The excursions put Will in a pensive frame of mind as he heads towards Geneva Airport.
