In honor of Baby Loss Awareness Week this year, we revisit Sherokee Ilse's poignant journey. After experiencing the heart-wrenching loss of three babies—through miscarriage, a full-term stillborn son, and an ectopic pregnancy—Sherokee became a mentor for grieving parents, helping them navigate their deep anguish and despair.As a mother of two living sons and a pioneer in perinatal loss and bereavement, Sherokee has authored 18 books and booklets on loss and healing, including her most renowned work, Empty Arms: Coping with Miscarriage, Stillbirth, and Infant Death. With over 30 years of expertise, she has passionately spoken, trained, and consulted worldwide on topics such as miscarriage, stillbirth, NICU losses, sudden infant death, child loss, and general bereavement.A wonderful story I wanted to share about this interview is that it inspired a woman named Julie Reskakis to reach out to her, affirming that this was the work Julie felt called to do. After training with Sherokee for seven months, both online and in person in Pittsburgh, Julie recognized Sherokee's program as the gold standard in the field of perinatal bereavement. Upon becoming certified, she proposed a perinatal bereavement program at Holy Name Medical Center, aimed at supporting families through their loss and helping them create precious memories in the time they have together.Now a member of the staff on the Labor and Delivery unit, Julie feels honored to do this vital work. In part two of our special episode in support of Baby Loss Awareness Week in the UK, our host James Abbott speaks to two wonderful people who took their own trauma and grief and did an incredible thing with it. They founded a charity to help people in the same painful position they were in – a position nobody wants to find themselves in - facing the death of a baby.Jo and David Ward went through the tragedy of the death of their daughter, Abigail, who was stillborn at 41 weeks, and they're here to share their story with us now and to talk about their marvellous charity Abigail's Footsteps set up in memory of Abigail.With still births and neonatal deaths standing at around 14 a day in England and Wales – sadly one of the highest rates in the developed world - the work of the charity has never been more important.

Tess shares her experiences of IVF, pregnancy loss and her decision to try genetic screening. Whilst navigating her fertility journey, Tess found out that her ovarian reserve levels were much lower than they should be for her age and that in fact her egg age was 10 years older than her biological age. This came as a huge shock as Tess assumed that as she young she wouldn't have any problems getting pregnant.Tess shares her frustrations of not being able to progress her fertility journey during the pandemic and the isolation she felt during this time, which has been common to many.Tess tells me about how much IVF has taught her about herself and her body, and that during a fertility journey you have to learn a whole new language with all the different words and acronyms that she had to get familiar with. We talked about the decision to go through IVF and the support that she had from her friends and other women who had gone through fertility treatments. Tess talks openly about how she coped with IVF and the challenges they went through.Tess explains how it felt, to find out at her 10 weeks scan, that there was no heartbeat. The devastating news no one wants to ever hear.Tess unfortunately had a miscarriage just before Thanksgiving, an American National holiday at the end of November. She talks about her down she felt during the holiday.Like many women, Tess felt that there was something wrong and made the decision to get further medical opinion. One specialist mentioned blood clotting, something that hadn't been raised before with Tess.Tess made the decision to try an IVF add on tests and treatment, currently not available in the UK, called Pregmune which is a comprehensive, AI-powered fertility assessment. During these tests, Tess discovered that she had 3 active blood clots that were only present when she was pregnant. There can be few things more devastating than the death of a child. This incredibly emotive and difficult subject is the focus of this episode, which takes the form of two testimony-based podcasts. In part one we hear from Saskia Hogbin who tragically lost her baby, Josef, 28 weeks into her pregnancy. We are releasing this episode in Baby Loss Awareness Week in the UK (9th-15th October). Now in its 21st year, the week is an opportunity for everyone in the baby loss community and beyond to come together to remember and commemorate much-loved and missed babies.More than one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage, that's around a quarter of a million in the UK each year, and although most occur in the first three months, they can happen much later. In this episode, Amy from Southwater in West Sussex, shares the story of her daughter Eetha who sadly was born sleeping. After a traumatic miscarriage that was handled badly by her hospital, Amy knew that she wanted her next birth to happen away from the medical system. Amy and partner Charlie prepared extensively for freebirth, and despite the tragic outcome of loss, Amy describes the birth as incredible and empowering. Amy shares her experience of amazing support during a difficult time, and what to expect if you do experience a loss. Clare Worgan Head of Training and Education at Sands, talks about how her role involves researching and training individuals and professionals. A survey in 2018 which found 50% of employees felt unsupported, showed a gap in education for line managers and employers to be able to create a supportive workplace. They share some small things we can do to prioritise self-care, and simply acknowledge the amount that bereaved parents are carrying. They also speak to Lucy Livesey, an occupational health nurse about supporting bereaved parents to deliver their babies through hypnobirthing. Lucy lost her daughter Ellie at just under 24 weeks, when she found out Ellie's heart hadn't formed properly and made the difficult decision to terminate for medical reasons. She decided to have a hypnobirthing experience to deliver Ellie, and to provide some comfort to her and her husband. Lucy went on to train as a hypnobirthing teacher and teach parents how to work with their bodies and manage their wellbeing, setting up Relax with Lucy & Co. Since then, she's set up The Ellie's Gift Project and app to help the baby loss community through mindfulness and relaxation interventions. They also share some of the ways in which Sands can support parents' wellbeing, through their Bereavement Support Services team and through virtual fundraising challenges. This week is Baby Loss Awareness Week, October 15th is Pregnancy, Infant, and Child Loss Remeberence Day, and today on Sense of Soul podcast we will be remembering Dylan Taylor. His parents, our dear friends Angelica and Billy Taylor joined us for a hard and very heartfelt conversation. In 1997 the newly married couple were preparing for their first child. They had learned through an ultrasound that they were having a boy. Billy and Angelica were so excited to begin their lives as parents. Everything was going well until Angelica begun to have concerning symptoms that lead her to the hospital, in her second trimester. Angelica was diagnosed with “HELLP Syndrome” a rare pregnancy complication. It is a type of preeclampsia that causes elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count. Many women who have HELLP syndrome need to give birth early to prevent health complications. Angelica and Billy were faced with having to make decisions that nobody should ever have to make. However this was an emergency and the urgency was a matter of life and death. The risks were great, inducing labor would mean that their baby would be very premature, but if they didn't, there would be a chance Billy would lose them both. Angelica and Billy take us back to the day they had their firstborn, to the moments they lost their firstborn. Hear from a fathers prespective as Billy so genuinely shares his story, learn how they struggled in grief, yet managed to survive this traumatic loss and find their happy once again. This conversation comes with a trigger warning regarding baby loss.Eight Years ago, Jon and I lost our daughter Alma at six months in the womb through a late stage termination due to medical reasons. We discuss the pregnancy, the procedure, her birth and her funeral.At certain points we express a humour which could be uncomfortable for some listeners. This was, and still is, one of our ways of processing the grief, and as always, we try to be as honest as possible in sharing our experience, in the hope that it may help others feel less alone.For this episode, we shared out story while making lunch at home in our kitchen. To mark Baby Loss Awareness Week which falls on 9th to 15th October 2022 our latest podcast deals with the sensitive topic of fertility, infertility and pregnancy loss. We look at why this is a workplace issue and what employers can do to support employees going through these experiences. This episode is different to the rest of our employment law series as rather than a deep dive into the legal framework it's a discussion of where the law stands, or rather trails behind, modern society and the challenges faced by many. In this special episode for Baby Loss Awareness Week, we're focussing once again on surgical termination. We're speaking with Jane Fisher from Antenatal Results & Choices (ARC) and Dr Patricia Lohr, Medical Director for the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) Also joining us are Sabrina Fletcher @thetfmrdoula, Emma Belle from @tfmrmamas and Paige Wissam @paigewissam. All three women have experienced a surgical termination. Jane and Patricia tell us about how BPAS took on the task of creating a TFMR pathway for those wanting/needing to access a ST and how there are more specialist hubs coming online within hospitals. These units will care for those women with medical conditions, meaning they can't be served by the independent sector. However, the hope/plan is that this will also serve those needing a TFMR as well. This means there will eventually be more doctors who can preform ST within the NHS, ensuring continuity of care for women and birthing people. They also bust the myths surrounding the debates around which is better for psychological well-being: surgical or medical termination.
