US equity futures are higher, with S&P up 2.5%. European equity markets are also pointing up. Asian markets go broadly higher. Greater China markets outperform on latest US-China trade developments. Nikkei was lagging, mild gains for ASX and Kospi sees moderate gains. Bond yields are back up with US 10-year 7 bps higher at 4.5%. Dollar sees big gains versus Japanese yen, euro, Swiss franc and sterling. Oil higher. Gold sharply lower. Industrial metals mixed. In a significant de-escalation of the US-China trade war, both countries announced that they will significantly reduce tariffs on the other. US will reduce tariffs on Chinese goods to 30% from 145%, for 90 days and China will reduce tariffs on US goods to 10% from 125%, also for 90 days. New duties reverse reciprocal and subsequent retaliatory tariffs imposed from 2-April, while US keeps in place 20% fentanyl tariff. Its importance however was emphasised in my conversation with Dame Alison Rose DBE, our guest on episode #007 of ‘In the Arena'.Dame Alison Rose DBE was formerly the NatWest Group's CEO and the first woman appointed to this role. With operating revenue of £6 billion, assets of £693 billion, 61,500 employees and 19 million customers, she led in one of the highest stakes environments in business.“It can be a very individualistic kind of culture if you're not careful. And so, for me, it was always about bringing the right team with the right culture on a common mission”, says Alison.“I used to cox rowing teams. You'd have eight highly competitive individuals in a boat. And if you got them all moving in the same way, this boat would sing, and it would fly. It was amazing. And you could tell the difference between when it was working and when it wasn't. But each of those individual people had to be motivated in a different way. And that's true of corporate teams.”“It was the thesis I had on the multiple teams I've built throughout my career. Always hire people better than you. A sign of a weak leader is when you push talent down. So, you should never be intimidated by talent. You hire the best people, people who are better than you, because you want collective skills in your team.”“Be very clear on the culture you want to create. "You can't do it on your own, you need brilliant people around you. Communication is critical here to mange the complexity You need to operate a very simple model in a complex situation. Essentially you need to make sure we are backing the things we know work well, that we can measure it all and optimise it At that point was know we're mature enough to add to that mix." On telling a consistent brand story; "The thing that's challenging about consistency is scale and pace. In media we need to make sure that when the customer sees something from us that it's relevant to them on any channel."Agency relationships: A one team culture if what work, when everyone's working to the same outcomes. Relationships used to be transactional and binary but now we need a multiple of expertise from multiple sources. The relationship is  now more flexible. On search marketing: "Search is not a media channel but a behaviour and it tells you that the way people's behaviour changes as they go from platform to platform."

The FTSE 100 opened modestly higher ahead of the Bank of England's rate decision later today. In early trade, the index was up just under a quarter of a percent at 8,223. Among the movers, Sainsbury's is top of the leaderboard, up 2% after agreeing a deal to offload its core banking business to NatWest Group, even though it had to pay the lender £125 million to do it. CMC Markets PLC jumped 9.1% after following the recent deal with Revolut by announcing full-year results well ahead of consensus forecasts. Alpha Financial Markets Consulting is up another 3% on top of yesterday big jump, with the board formally backing a £626 million takeover by private equity group Bridgepoint. The fund management consultant said investors will receive 505p a share in cash, with the transaction expected to be completed in the third quarter, subject to a shareholder vote. On the downside, Tate & Lyle fell close to 7% as investors don't seem to like the sound of its $1.8 billion acquisition of US rival CP Kelco and £215 million share buyback. He is also Chair of the Law Society of Scotland's Wellbeing Steering Group. Kenny shares some of the lessons he's learned in law including:·      Be Yourself! Giving legal advice is a relationships game, and its hard to build relationships without being authentic. ·      Play with your head up (to use a sporting analogy). Be aware, be able to identify opportunities, adapt to change and be ready for whatever might be around the corner.  ·      Create and nurture a positive culture within your team. Kenny admits that early on in his career he tried to live up to his pre-conceived ideas of what a lawyer should be, and how damaging this can be for lawyers' wellbeing.
