In 2020, a 30-year-old father of two in the Bronx had an idea. While struggling to establish a music career, John Jaequan Cotton, better known as Jae Tips, took inspiration from the streetwear brands he loved and committed fully to a vision for a personal brand focused on apparel and merch. After building an organic following for his designs, Jae stepped outside of his comfort zone and started knocking on the doors of the people who could help scale his vision. That hustle led to a partnership with an obscure running shoe brand, Saucony, and a series of beloved footwear collaborations that captured the imagination of the sneaker community. But despite critical and cultural acclaim, the harsh economics of streetwear and the crowded footwear landscape mean that Jae still cannot take success for granted. And it all started with one idea…Chapters:0:00 - Intro2:15 - Growing Up / Early Influences4:50 - Dealing with Social Anxiety 6:08 - The Influence of Billionaire Boys Club and BAPE8:10 - Lessons Learned Working at Footlocker9:10 - Music Career / Shifting Focus to Merch13:00 - Opportunities During COVID15:00 - Creating Hats, Sneakers, and Shirts17:55 - Keys to Building Community19:30 - First Sneakers with Saucony24:17 - Balancing Supply & Demand / Marketing27:30 - Aftermarket and Resellers29:00 - Five Year Plan / Managing Growth of the Brand32:40 - Biggest Challenges as an Entrepreneur38:20 - Aspirations / What's Success?40:30 - Leaving ComplexCon Sneaker of the Year Panel43:05 - Turning Adversity into Art

In this episode of Great Practice, Great Life®, we flip the script and put thought leader Steve Riley in the guest seat to answer a powerful question: What does it really take to start or grow a law practice in 2025 while staying true to your vision, your values, and your well-being? Guest host Glenn Gutek and Steve explore the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of the legal profession, discussing how rapid changes in technology, politics, and economics contribute to the anxiety and stress attorneys face today. Steve shares insights on how lawyers can maintain a healthy balance between their professional commitments and personal well-being. He emphasizes the importance of navigating these challenges while maintaining a clear vision. Glenn and Steve's conversation also explores the role of vision protection in achieving greatness. It's easy to lose sight of one's aspirations amidst the daily grind, but they emphasize the importance of nurturing one's vision and legacy through strategic action. The fast-paced world, full of social media distractions, requires focused attention and control over where we direct our energy. Steve addresses the detrimental effects of “hurry sickness.” He stresses the importance of pursuing meaningful visions, encouraging attorneys not to settle for mediocrity and to maintain high standards in both their personal and professional lives. As we navigate the influence of AI on the legal profession, we discuss its impact on traditional business models and billing practices. AI offers efficiencies that challenge the billable hour model, compelling law firms to reassess how they provide value to clients. Steve discusses the trend toward hyper-niching, where attorneys can specialize in highly specific subspecialties, enhancing their practice with AI-driven tools. This episode provides invaluable guidance for lawyers seeking to adapt and thrive amidst the changing legal landscape, making it a must-listen for anyone invested in the future of legal practice. Thanks to The Best Notary for sponsoring this episode! Today’s guest is rewriting the rules of digital trust and security. Imagine a world where your identity is protected by a groundbreaking device — a computer embedded inside a credit card, complete with biometric sensors. This isn’t sci-fi; it’s the disruptive reality created by today’s visionary. With over 25 years of leadership in space systems, secure digital platforms, and game-changing innovation, this guest is not just building technology—he’s building the future. As the Co-Founder and CEO of Sentry Enterprises, he’s tackling the root causes of identity threats, reshaping cybersecurity, and making these cutting-edge solutions scalable and accessible for everyone. A member of Abundance360 and the Planetary Society, he’s fueled by a passion for uniting humanity through technology and breaking the boundaries of what’s possible in the digital age. Key Takeaways: 01:09 - The Problem with Traditional Identity Systems 11:20 - Credentials vs. True Identity 13:18 - Biometrics as the Future of Identity 19:41 - The Threat of Deepfakes and AI 28:43 - Decentralized Finance and Global Accessibility 36:35 - Adoption as the Biggest Challenge, and Optimism for the Future Quote of the Show: 36:08: “I do think there's going to be disruption in jobs in those kinds of things, but I think there's also going to be just an equal number of opportunities. I'm very optimistic about the future. I think we're going to see massive, rapid advances in, in healthcare, efficiencies in, and everything in an industry to government is related to these sort of tools. When it comes specifically to digital identity, the good news is that technology is here to solve those problems. Right. The biggest challenge is adoption. But, as with anything, when there's a pain point and people want it, it will get adopted, right? And, we're working and others are working with the right partners in the world, the government and others to solve these kinds of problems. So I think people should leave thinking that we have a very bright future in front of us. And despite political turmoil, all those kinds of things. Those are very short lived. The human species has proven to be very resilient. And that's beautiful.” Podcast Information Want PR that actually matters?
