Just as our eyes work together to create a sense of depth perception, so too do our ears...And yet, so few radio and podcast productions take advantage of the full stereo field—how differences between the “left” and “right” sides of a mix work together to create an immersive sense of space. How can we use this space to help us show vs. tell in radio storytelling, and create more visceral auditory imagery? In this session from the 2018 Third Coast Conference, Brendan Baker shared ideas, tools, and techniques to enhance our sense of space as both listeners and producers. You can listen to all the sessions from previous years of the conference at ThirdCoastFestival.org. Just after the new year, Kaitlin and Mitra take a business trip to small town Ontario to meet Steffy. At six foot two inches, Stefonknee is the tallest six year old you will ever meet. Of course, she isn’t actually six. She is an age-player, meaning she likes to pretend to be a kid. She fluidly moves in and out of her six year old self and her adult self. In addition to her male and female identities. Steffy is in a place of peace with her identities after a very traumatic falling out with her family, which for trans folks, is unfortunately, not uncommon. Here are the results of a 2011 survey the American trans community. The National Center for Transgender Equality is launching another survey this summer. You can sign up to take the survey or help distribute it here. In addition to our dynomite team, this story could not have been possible without the help of so many people. Production Assistance by Maria Dønvang. Editorial Advising by Julia Alsop, Brendan Baker, Kelsey Padgett, Tina Horn and Ignacio Rivera. The biggest thanks to Mummy & Daddy and of course, Stefonknee Wolscht.

The final story of our series is about two people who took a one day’s love and tried to make it last for ever. Sarah and Kim were braver than most of us. Instead of leaving the one day’s love to linger in their memories and fantasies of accidental future meetings, they moved in together. They uhauled it. After the lake and 6 weeks of talking on the phone every day, Sarah amtraked to the big city and settled in to the apartment they signed a year’s lease for. They hadn’t even slept together yet. But they were crazy about each other. They wanted more. They wanted it all. The great question: is chemistry enough to get through the yet unknown interpersonal frictions and differences? This episode of The Heart is secretly called 9-1-1 Vox Pop, produced at the last minute with the help of some very talented individuals. First, the music. The music was originally composed for the episode by the incredible Matthew Daher. He just released an EP called Dwelling Lightheartedly In the Futility of Everything. Go get it. You also heard music at the beginning by Man Meets Bear, who also released a new album recently called Wagaskina. It’s also fucking awesome. So many thanks: editorial genius as always by Mitra Kaboli and Sharon Mashihi. The team and beyond who helped get this episode together: Samara Breger, Jen Ng, Shira Bannerman, Megan Detrie, Julia Murphy, Martin Johnson, Ido Fluk, Hana Crawford and Brendan Baker who gives me advice all the time about everything.

In the fall of 1902, twelve young men in suits regularly gathered for dinners in the basement of a government building in Washington, D.C. The men ate what they were served, even though they knew that their food was spiked with poison. The mastermind behind these experiments was Harvey Washington Wiley. Before you condemn him, though, you’d be surprised to know that you probably owe him a debt of gratitude. Incidentally, Wiley is the founding father of the Food and Drug Administration. Inside the Episode: The intention of these experiments was not to induce digestive discomfort for its own sake. Rather, they were part of an extensive study on how chemical preservatives in food — before regulations existed — could harm human beings over time. You might cringe at what was once used to keep food “fresh.” Producer Sruthi Pinnamaneni gave us a closer look inside the story. About diving deep into archival materials, she says, “I spent hours [at the Library of Congress], reading thousands of [Wiley’s] letters and squinting at his tiny journals.  It is when you know every curve and squiggle of a man’s handwriting that you feel as though you’re starting to get to know him!” One surprising fact that she discovered while researching the piece was that while Wiley’s experiments contributed so much to food regulation, today’s practices still leave something to be desired: “…The FDA doesn’t really test food additives anymore.  There are more than five thousand additives commonly found in processed food and most of them haven’t been tested on animals and almost none (except for dietary supplements) have been tested on humans.” Sruthi sent us some photographs of the Poison Squad, Wiley, and some (how shall I put this?) unconventional tools that were used during the experiments. William Carter with Wiley and the Poison Squad   Wiley in his lab   A letter showing interest in participating   A fecal drying machine “None but the brave can eat the fare.” Are you brave enough? Full serving of intrigue and radio in this piece. Bon appetit. The Poison Squad won Best Radio & Podcast Media at the Jackson Hole Science Media Awards in 2014. The Poison Squad was produced by Sruthi Pinnamaneni with sound design by Brendan Baker. It was hosted for this episode of Transistor by Genevieve Sponsler and mixed for Transistor by Erika Lantz. A story of hustles and gambles within lowlife culture. Charles Farrell could be labeled a number of things: pianist, writer, boxing manager, and hustler. As a teenager, Farrell lived in the streets of Boston, playing piano in mafia-owned clubs. With a love for boxing, he started gambling on high-profile matches while also managing fighters. He fixed an array of professional fights by using code-talk with trainers, foolproof matchmaking, and buying referees and judges. In this story, the highs and lows of gangster culture are explored as Charles Farrell describes the ease of taking advantage of society’s vulnerable parts.  Produced by Brendan Baker, Garrett Crowe, Mike Martinez, Nick van der Kolk, and Tyler Wray Information on Charles Farrell at worldtriberecords.com.
