Nic also said “El Niña” (0:24:01), coupling a male article and female noun, which might sound sexy but is wrong. El Niño o La Niña habrían sido correctos. Cartoonist Chris Giarrusso needs no introduction... but we'll give him one anyway! Rising in the ranks from lowly intern to production support in Marvel's famed bullpen, Chris' life changed when his strip Mini Marvels was chosen to grace the Bullpen Bulletins column in nearly every Marvel book. After dozens of strips, as well as one-shot stories and collections, Chris took his talents to Image, where he debuted G-Man as a backup feature in Savage Dragon. G-Man turned into a successful series of books, and Chris continued his illustrative career with Encounter in 2018 and Hashtag: Danger in 2019, among others. Now, he's teamed up with Brian "Smitty" Smith, a former colleague from the Marvel days, for Officer Clawsome, a kids graphic novel published earlier this year. You can follow Chris at his website, chrisgiarrusso.com, or on all the socials by searching his name._____________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Wrapping up our three-part introduction to Lorna Dane... as she discovers the truth (for now) about her parentage! Also, Cyclops dons dollar store Shi'ar armor... for no discernible reason! Seriously... there's NO reason why he'd done it! Plus: the usual silliness of our seemingly-endless backup strip, the utterly insane Mutant Mailbox, and blustery Bullpen Bulletins! -- Twitter: @acecomics / Instagram: @90sxmen weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen
100 years ago the universe graced us with a creative mind that changed our culture forever. This week we look back on the life and career of the legendary Stan Lee. Some of the most memorable characters and stories were created by this icon of the comic industry and his influence spans the world. Plus, news of an injured hero, a returning hero, and much more. Jay and Josh shout "Excelsior!" to the rooftops on Superhero Suite.
How can we miss the X-Men if they never go away? Today we wrap up the "split-up era" for our Uncanny Heroes... just an issue after we kicked it off! This time, we're hanging out high in the desert mountains of New York City with Cyclops and Marvel Girl while they face off with a reject Fantastic Four baddie! It's not ALL bad though, once we get through with our lead feature, we get to watch Hank McCoy write with his feet for a few pages! There's still the Mutant Mail-Box, the Bullpen Bulletins, and Stan's Soapbox gets relevant! All that, plus some discussion and interview notes about Gary Friedrich and Arnold Drake's little discussed time with the World's Strangest Teens!
With the X-Men no more, we check in with the Bosom Buddies and their Belles as they try to get tickets to the theatre! It's the return of the Warlock (not THAT Warlock... or the other one... probably not the third or fourth one yer thinkin' of either!). Also, despite the title of this ish... he's only got one face, and it's very boring! Also: The Mutant Mail-Box, The Bullpen Bulletins... small-talk on Arnold Drake and Fabulous Flo Steinberg... and, finally, I read Professor Charles Xavier's eulogy! Join us, won't you?
Back behind the mic after a long hiatus... jumping back in with the Silver Age X-Men, just as they're getting set to split up! This being a Chris-show, expect the first half-hour of it to be full of stuff you probably couldn't care less about... but, once I finally get to the comics-content, it's a pretty good time! Two "ehh" stories, the Mutant Mail-Box, and Bullpen Bulletins are all here! Huge and sincere THANK YOU for your patience and lack of new episodes over the past few months.
We're finally back for a stint in the Silver-Age... where one of our teen-age heroes meets a fella outta Marvel's Golden Age! It's the coming (and going) of Red Raven! Hold on to yer harnesses gang, this one's gonna be a barn-burner! We've got us a new writer to boot! Plus - The Origins of the X-Men backup strip focuses on Kid Kool as he gets roughed up by some Strong Island street toughs, and thrown in the clink! Also - our normal Silver-Age back-matter - Letters Pages (featuring future pros Keith Giffen and Carl Gafford), an abridged Bullpen Bulletins bit, and an absolutely overflowing MIGHTY Marvel Checklist! It's great to be back in "the long ago", I sure hope you'll join me! -- Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/xlapsed X-Lapsed Voicemail: 623-396-5375 (or, 623-396-JERK) Twitter: @acecomics / Instagram: @90sxmen weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com The All-New, All-Different chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen
The Essential X-Lapsed rolls on... and OFF the beaten X-Path to continue x-ploring the x-ploits of the Silver Age X-Men... as well as popping in on the first appearance of semi-relevant Marvel Mutant... Mentallo, in the pages of Strange Tales - a three-part adventure starring Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.! All that, and our usual Silver Age Back-Matter, including Letters Pages and Bullpen Bulletins! -- https://www.patreon.com/xlapsed X-Lapsed Voicemail: 623-396-5375 (or, 623-396-JERK) Twitter: @acecomics / Instagram: @90sxmen weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com The All-New, All-Different chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen
A bit of a shorter MasterworX compilation this time out in order to compile all three of our "Off the Beaten Path" Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D./Mentallo episodes into the next bunch... but, a fun group of issues all the same! Today we'll see the torch passed, as Stan Lee makes his exit as the writer of our merry Mutants, welcoming Rascally Roy Thomas who'll take over the chore for the next few years! We're going to tangle with Magneto, meet The Mimic... and get a bit more Luciferian gobbledygook! Plus: All the usual Silver Age backmatter (Letters Pages, Ads, Bullpen Bulletins) you can handle! Happy New Year! -- TIMESTAMPS: (00:00:00) X-Men #18: "If Iceman Should Fail...!" (00:37:08) X-Men #19: "Lo! Now Shall Appear -- The Mimic!" (01:16:14) X-Men #20: "I, Lucifer..." Back to the flagship... but still with Magneto! A wildly convenient little ditty today, which starts at Professor X's somber memorial... and ends up on the electrified floor of Island M. The hows and whys are part of (if not ALL of) the fun... Also: A backup strip to shut up some of the more annoying... err, prolific... letterhacks, finally explaining how Cyclops' powers work! Speaking of letterhacks, we'll be covering 7-8 of those, then hopping into the Bullpen Bulletins to talk about the 1968 Marvel Explosion, I kvetch s'more about variant covers... and much, much more! -- https://www.patreon.com/xlapsed X-Lapsed Voicemail: 623-396-5375 (or, 623-396-JERK) Twitter: @acecomics / Instagram: @90sxmen weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com The All-New, All-Different chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen
Not a Dream! Not a Hoax! Not an Imaginary Story! Not a... good story either! Today we celebrate... wait, that's not the right word for it... we commemorate the passing of the Mentor, Trainer, and Tormenter of the Uncanny X-Men: Professor Charles Francis Xavier! We will almost certainly never see him ever again. Plus: We wrap up Cyclops' origin in our Origins of the X-Men backup, we chat up the letters pages, go through the Bullpen Bulletins - have a brief aside about the Somerton Man, check out the new-look MIGHTY Marvel Checklist (now with 2 less anthologies!), hit up out own mailbag... and much, much more! In our third compilation of the X-Ploits of the Silver Age X-Men, the Marvel Universe tour continues -- pitting our heroes against the Avengers for the first of a billion times! Also, they have their sure-to-be final confrontation with Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants... EVER! After which, the two fan-favorites from that crew have to decide where their allegiances lay -- will Wanda and Pietro make dozens of letterhacks happy by joining the X-Men... or, will they wind up somewhere altogether un-x-pected instead?! Speaking of letterhacks - each of the X-Men segments in this collection feature a full-blown discussion of the Letters Pages, as well as the proto-Bullpen Bulletins! -- https://www.patreon.com/xlapsed X-Lapsed Voicemail: 623-396-5375 (or, 623-396-JERK) Twitter: @acecomics / Instagram: @90sxmen weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com chrisandreggie.podbean.com The All-New, All-Different chrisisoninfiniteearths.com facebook.com/groups/90sxmen
For our second MasterworX compilation, we x-plore the X-Men's first crossovers... having them cross paths with the likes of the Fantastic Four and Iron Man... while Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has a run-in with The Mighty Thor! We also advance the X-Men's own story... including an episode that has some sort of weird temporal anomaly... not sure if y'all can help me out with this, but - during X-Men #8, the pages get a bit fuzzy... and the art and writing style changes a bit for a blink of an eye. Hmm... it's probably nothing important! All that, plus the original letters pages, the proto-Bullpen Bulletins, and much more! -- TIMESTAMPS: (00:00:00) Tales of Suspense #49: "The New Iron Man Meets The Angel!" Finally... our X-Tended stint with Factor Three comes to a close! Today, your humble host proves that not even threat of illness will keep his stupid ass off the microphone, as we close out this arc, and prepare to jump headlong into the next... even weirder era! Our Factor-Three story rolls on... well, it kinda limps on, but we'll try and remain positive. Also, for the first time ever, X-Men has a back-up featurette, as we're kicking off the long-promised "Origins of the X-Men" series of stories! In today's issue-sode, the heroes head underground to rescue Ralphie Roberts, who was caught in a war for the Underworld between Tyrannus and the Mole Man - a battle to see which one of them might bore us more! Into the Ruby Limbo of Cyttorak! Today we wrap up our second Juggernaut arc by traveling INTO the Gem of Cyttorak itself... and facing off against the dread demonic Xorak. Today we find out what lurked behind the brown door (don't Google that) and our youngest X-Man's birthday party is interrupted by both Bernard the Beat Poet and the dread threat of Satan's Saints! Someone cue Yakety Sax... as silliness abounds! Plus: Mutant Mail-box, Bullpen Bulletins, the inaugural Stan's Soapbox, the dramatic return of the Mighty Marvel Checklist... and much, much more! Slurp matzoh ball soup with Will Eisner Award-winning writer/editor Mark Evanier as we discuss the lesson he learned watching Stan Lee write one of his famous Bullpen Bulletins pages, how his first sale to Laugh-In magazine led him to believe he could make it as a professional writer, the lunch at which Jack Kirby swore him to secrecy about quitting Marvel, the inker Kirby would have chosen if he was allowed to choose only one (and why it wouldn't be Vince Colletta), his stupefied reaction when Sergio Aragonés placed the original art for the first issue of MAD in his hands (and how Mark later stupefied Jerry Lewis), whether he can imagine a world in which Stan Lee and Jack Kirby could have ironed out their differences, and much, much more.
Conway cannily caches a crepuscular clone cameo near the crescendo of a seemingly throwaway Mysterio two-parter straight out of the Scooby Doo script slush pile. So many incredible developments in these issues! MJ and Pete’s autumnal stroll through Central Park; Betty and Ned – engaged at last; J. Jonah Jameson leaves the country; and Spider-Buggy: No More! And, as usual, the paratext pushes the conversation in a million different semi-coherent directions – most notably some reflection on Roy Thomas’s World War II titles (occasioned by a Bullpen Bulletins teaser for THE INVADERS) and the Hobbesian editorial power vacuum at Marvel during the mid-1970s. All this plus another missive from Todd Murry, chock full of information about contemporary comics and Sesame Street lore. Credits: Intro music: Debbie Harry - "Comic Books"
This week on the podcast, Peter Parker’s every effort to track down his Aunt May lands him smack back in the middle of a gang war. It’s Doc Ock vs. Hammerhead (who makes his debut in these pages) for control of the New York City rackets. Also: Peter’s roiling regrets finally rear up an ulcer! Meanwhile, in the paratext… The Bullpen Bulletins burgeon with ballyhoo for a wealth of woman-centered winners (The Cat, Shanna the She-Devil, and Night Nurse) – none of which got their due on the newsstands. And issue #114’s “Spider’s Web” lettercol spotlights a lengthy letter from Jeff Berlin of Bayville, New York which superbly synopsizes the title’s status quo ante-Conway. This week's episode of The GAR! Podcast is a long one, the incredible fourth of five episodes recorded live at the 2017 Camden Comic Con. First Glenn and friend of the show, the amazing Robert Repici, discuss the panels of the Con, including the one that they and Ray moderated later in the afternoon. They also discuss the guests of the panel – Amy Chu, Fred Van Lente, Dean Haspiel, and Larry Hama – the legendary silent issue of G.I. Joe, the Hydra Captain America, diversity in comics, the Justice Society, the Fox, and the art of storytelling. Next, in a special French Fry Diary segment, the GAR! con crew (Jennifer Walker of The Make Mine Magic Podcast, friends of the show Jeff Milliman and Jessy Lukens, and the returning Ray) try some of the fries from the food trucks assembled by the Camden Comic Con, even the kimchi ones, which Glenn rightfully refuses to try. There's also more discussion of energy drinks, and anti-vaxers. Thanks to Stink Fisher of The Pop Shop for the awesome burger. Then we finally meet the mythical David Lisa, the geekiest librarian in New Jersey, and the equally cool Janel Miller of the South Jersey Writers' Group, and we talk about the Echelon Mall, Michael Jackson's Thriller, computers, injectable contraceptives, old school phones, libraries, first movies, drive-in theaters, the etymology of dork, graphic novels, and of course, Fantastic Four. David recently re-read the first one hundred issues of the classic series, which made for an intriguing starting point for the discussion of the characters and the creators, favorite stories, the lost FF adventure, the Silver Surfer, reprints, Bullpen Bulletins, comic book movies, Avenger X, March, and the legacy and tragedy of Jack Kirby. The GAR! Podcast is the Glenn Walker and Ray Cornwall weekly podcast where they talk unrehearsed about whatever happens to come to mind. It's an audio-zine for your mind, a nerd exploration of a nerd world, coming to you from the suburbs of New Jersey and the sunny lakes of Florida via Skype. Steve Buscemi's Fantastic Four Hello, and welcome to episode 123 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week on the Fantasticast, we're taking a look Fantastic Four #107. Ben's about to get defrosted, Janus is looming on the horizon, and nobody's really caring about Crystal. More importantly, this is the first issue to feature art from Fantastic Four mainstay John Buscema. As well as this, Steve's autocorrect leads to an unusual arrival on the show, we wonder just how a lethargic alarm system would sound, and we exhibit a high level of suspicion regarding a claim that the Bullpen Bulletins are not just about plugging other books. Oh, The Inhumanity Hello, and welcome to episode 114 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week sees Steve and Andy tackle Fantastic Four #99, Jack Kirby's preantepenultimate issue of the title. There's a new Inhumans strip in the offing, so Kirby's treasured creations make their final appearance under his pen in the Fantastic Four. Johnny's got all hot-headed (pun!) and the rest of the team have to get to him before he destroys the Inhumans. Why? I can't explain. We also take a very brief look at how the Fantastic Four help SHIELD defend against an attack by the Silver Surfer in Silver Surfer #17. And, for extra fun, we both decide to answer the 1970 Marvel Readers' Survey as featured in this month's Bullpen Bulletins. Definitely Not Not Brand Echh! It's really not. What it is, though, is the 74th episode of The Fantasticast, hosted by Steve Lacey and Andrew Leyland. This week we're looking at the first physical appearance of the Kree in the Marvel Universe, as both the Supreme Intelligence and Ronan The Accuser make their debut appearances in the Marvel Universe. Hint: One of these is a lot more prominent than the other! Yes, it's Fantastic Four #65. We've also dragged show artist Michael Georgiou back for a second bout of commentary and stumbling through the Bullpen Bulletins. And, as a special bonus, we spend almost two minutes looking at the lead strip from the first issue of Not Brand Echh!, Marvel's first humour mag. And I use the word 'humour' very broadly.
