If we are sincere with ourselves, we would agree that we tend to sit hunched over, staring down at our computer or phone most of the time. This is truly harmful to our posture and impacts our physical and mental health. We should all make an effort to sit up straighter, especially when tackling a difficult task because our posture does not just affect our bodies but also touches our brains. Posture has a wide-ranging effect on our well-being, both physical and mental. Have you heard of the famous saying, “Stand strong, look like a winner?” I am sure most of us have heard similar encouraging statements but could not understand what they mean. Research shows that posture plays a critical role in how we present ourselves to the world. How Maintaining Good Posture Can Boost Your Confidence.   Good posture helps boost your confidence: Any time you stand up straight, you automatically feel more confident and assertive. This happens because good posture engages your core muscles, which helps to stabilize your spine and improve your balance. This, in turn, makes you feel more secure and confident in your body. It helps command attention: If you are a leader or working in a professional setting, standing up straight helps project confidence through your posture, making people more likely to pay attention to and take you seriously. Good posture makes you look more attractive and approachable: People with good posture are more confident and approchable than those with poor posture. This is because good posture makes you look more open and approachable, which can appeal to other people. Studies show that sitting up straight can invite conversation and even compliments, while someone hunching over a screen sends the message that they don't want to be approached. Improved clarity: Did you know that good posture can significantly improve your clarity? Good posture increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, generating clarity. With good clarity, we are able to focus better and apply ourselves. Therefore, whenever you feel low, it would help to sit or stand upright to improve your mind. How to Create a More Confident Posture From nailing your leadership to interview, check out some of the postures to help improve your confidence! Keep Your Chin Up: During conversations, always keep your head up, whether you are waiting or while you present. This helps create a positive, confident image. Also, ensure you straighten your whole body by standing up tall with a straight spine and rolled-back shoulders to show poise. Make Eye Contact: Making and maintaining direct eye contact with the people you speak to shows you are sure of yourself and ready to tackle any conversation. Avoid Fidgeting: Keep fidgeting to a minimum. If you are used to playing with your hands, fiddling with your glass or key, or pulling at your clothes, try to stop. Fidgeting can be distracting to those around you and show signs of anxiety. Good posture is significant in projecting confidence and authority, improving physical health, and making a positive impression on others. For more guidance on how good posture impacts your confidence, contact Dr. Jason Jones at our Chiropractic office in Elizabeth City, NC, for assistance!

Apartment 140, ninth floor. Yegor stuck his large shaved head out of the bedroom window. Low in the night sky, the lights of a plane were gliding by, and soon the familiar hum of jet engines would catch up. Yegor wished he could be there on board right now. And not flying to some far away place, but coming home. Fidgeting in a not-so-comfortable seat, waiting for the landing, and looking out of the window at the familiar concrete high-rises on the outskirts of the city, the occasional cars on the roads, and the streetlights casting a soft yellow glow on the empty yards and streets. Then there would be the taxi ride with an overly chatty driver, the familiar clank of the key in the door lock, and a home that feels and smells a little different after a long absence. Like putting on a winter coat for the first time in a year. And when the floor in the living room creaks underfoot, as it always does, there will be a sudden, special kind of comfort — just like the feeling when you turn on the Sasha Foam mix for 5/8: radio.

Fidgeting. Being loud. Having trouble staying seated. Running or climbing when it's not appropriate. We used to consider these normal behaviors for young boys.  But now, they are listed as symptoms of ADHD. Attention disorders are certainly real. But in some cases, what if instead of changing our boys' behavior, we need to adjust our approach as adults? For instance–too much screen time and not enough exercise can make it hard for your son to sleep at night. In turn, being tired can make it hard for him to focus during the day. What if you turned off all screens after dinner, and took a family walk before bed instead? You and your son will both reap the benefits. It's going to sound sort of basic and maybe even cheesy but I'm telling you it's the secret sauce.   When you're in an awkward situation… maybe having small talk with someone you've just met or you walk into a crowded room of people you don't know or walk on stage before a speech… you're nervous!! Deep breath in and SMILE.     It's like the most basic thing… that most people don't do.  But I'm telling you if you can train yourself to do this… you will get comfortable in uncomfortable situations so much faster!!    Smiling is contagious … it lowers stress and anxiety… you're more approachable… you appear more confident.   Because of the reaction your body has to smiling, you're almost tricking your body into feeling more happy and less nervous.   Now it's not a nervous smile or WORSE- a nervous laugh. It's just a calm and confident smile- without saying anything.  It's subtle but changes everything.    Today we are talking about our superpower in uncomfortable situations - SMILING.       -We all get nervous - sometimes a little or sometimes a lot.    -Smiling is an easy way to boost your mood and be more relaxed.    -And it's way better than the alternatives!! looking down  Retreating on your phone  Crossing arms  Biting nails  Fidgeting or swaying  -This is NOT a nervous laugh!  -When we smoke it triggers a cascade of feel good brain chemicals called endorphins!    -It's almost like you TRICK your body into feeling new emotions.    -The act of smiling is a cue to your brain to release neuropeptides or happiness hormones like Dopamine, Serotonin and Endorphins.  Dopamin- gives you an instant boost of energy and motivation Serotonin- helps calm you down and soothes your nerves  Endorphins- reduce cortisol levels and even decreases feelings of pain.    Together these brain chemicals work to reduce the effects of stress and pressure and improve your mood!!    -Contagious!!  For you and for those around you.  When someone smokes at you.. your instinct is to smile back.  It instantly creates a positive social connection that reduces stress and improves connection.  It also tells your brain - im surrounded by friendly people here.    “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” It's not the EMOTION it's the MEANING you give to the emotion that makes it come alive.      -So change your state, change the MEANING you give to the situation and change your emotion.   -It's like an instant confidence bump.  And it's one easy hack.  Breathe and smile.    -This is NOT putting on a happy face when you're upset - in fact we should FEEL ALL THE FEELINGS. -It's about how you label the situation and how you react.  Instead of OH MY GOD im so nervous.  It's deep breath and we got this.    -People respond so well to this because even if you dont talk to people, you appear friendly.    -And it helps you have GOOD REACTIONS!  When you don't know what to do- default to smile - when most people default to something else - resting not so kind face or reaction etc.    -There's zero downside and it's easy to remember.    CHEERS!! To your SMILE being your superpower!

Fidgeting. “You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away.” – Psalm 139:2 (NLT) Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is kind of neat. It is calories you burn just moving about throughout the day. For example, if a 150lb female were to stand for 5 hours, she would burn almost 200 calories more than if she were to sit for 5 hours. Simple, standing is more challenging to the body than sitting. Fidgeting is also a form of NEAT. Those that do manual labor have much higher NEAT than those who sit at a desk all day. NEAT effects are what we call cumulative, which means they may be small in nature but they add up over the course of a day, week, or year. What if you had a desk job and you decided to stand for half of your day instead of sitting? This means you would get 4 hours of standing instead of sitting. In one day, being a 150lb female, you would burn an extra 150 calories. If you add that up through the 5-day work week you get 750 extra calories burned, and if you add that up over the work month you get over 3000 extra calories burned just by standing up. Keeping every other variable in your life equal for the sake of this argument, 3000 calories equates to almost a pound of fat loss per month. Pretty cool right? And all you did was stand up instead of sit down. Ways to Increase NEAT Park at the back of the parking lot when you go shopping. Carry your groceries in a basket instead of pushing a cart. Go to the bathroom two floors below your office. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Fidget more at your desk. Use a stand-up workstation instead of sitting for part of the day. Take walking meetings. Stand up and walk around when you are talking on the phone. Get a high-energy dog that needs to be walked every day. Ride your bike for short errands instead of getting in the car. There are many ways throughout the day that you can unknowingly burn more calories by simply changing your environment.  How can you increase the NEAT in your own life? We used to have a name for sufferers of ADHD. We called them boys.AnonymousBackground: For opioids, the deaths, addiction, and social destruction are the drug industry's fault—there is no controversy. There is now an anemic effort to fine and sometimes imprison a handful of people who were partly responsible for the death of more individuals than most wars. There is no consensus, however, for the closely related situation of amphetamines and similar stimulants, possibly because there are only 10,000 US deaths a year. Doctors who are in the pockets of manufacturers still proclaim with straight faces that amphetamine-class prescriptions are worlds apart from the same drugs used for abuse. They say that we are under-medicating despite close to universal usage. Physicians promote prescription stimulants for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other syndromes. Classroom misbehavior gets kids a quick prescription these days. Fidgeting, squirming, interrupting, forgetting, and being disorganized are the symptoms. For adults, the criteria are inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and other similar issues. This has made ten percent of our children and many adults “legitimate” drug candidates. American psychiatrists now treat ADHD with at least fifty prescription medications (listed on drugs.com).
