In this episode, Kim talks to Dr. Carmen Joy Imes about the women of Exodus. Dr. Imes brings her deep knowledge of Exodus to the average Christian audience, explaining how the structure and literary parallels of Exodus to show how the women are the rescuers of Moses, who then rescues the Hebrews. She provides the details of the midwives' spiritual work of saving lives. She demonstrates how Pharaoh's daughter displayed God's character as she sees Moses' misery, heard his cry, and took pity on him. She explains the Hebrew that illustrates how Miriam took a stand at the river to address Pharaoh's daughter just as Moses later took a stand to address Pharaoh. And she explains how Zipporah literally saved Moses' life as he decided which people group he belonged. Amidst these detailed portrayals of the Exodus women, Dr. Imes also points out the narrator's use of humor to depict the bumbling and nameless Pharaoh. 00:00 Introduction to Mutuality Matters 00:02 Exploring the Role of Zipporah in Exodus 01:04 Meet Dr. Carmen Joy IMEs 02:06 The Mystery of Exodus 4:24-25 03:26 Theological and Structural Significance of Zipporah 14:33 The Role of Women in the Early Chapters of Exodus 21:49 Elevating Women in Scripture 22:00 A Word from CBE 22:37 The Women of Exodus: Zipporah, Pua, and Shiphrah 22:52 The Story of Moses' Birth and the Women Who Saved Him 32:07 Moses' Identity and His Encounter with God 39:37 Closing Thoughts and Resources 41:20 Final Remarks and How to Stay Connected Guest Bio Dr. Carmen Joy Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in Southern California. “Moses protested, ‘If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' they will ask me, ‘What is his name?' Then what should I tell them?' God replied to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.' God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob-has sent me to you.” - Exodus 3:13-15Genesis introduced us to the world and to ourselves. Exodus, the second book of the Old Testament of the Bible, does more to introduce us to God – to he who was, and is, and is to come. To a God so eternal that he identifies himself as I AM, but also a God so personal that he also chooses to identify himself in relation to people – the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Exodus is a book of movement, propelling the true story of God and his people forward in such a way that sets forth not just the rest of the Biblical narrative, but human history up to where we are today. It is in Exodus that we see the baby in the basket, the burning bush, the ten plagues, the first Passover, the parting of the Red Sea, the 10 commandments, and so much more. To introduce us to the book of Exodus, host Jason Wieland is joined by Dr. Carmen Joy Imes. Dr. Imes is an Associate Professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, author of the books Being God's Image and Bearing God's Name, and is currently working on a commentary of Exodus. Conor Conway is a coffee connoisseur, top notch trumpeter, and spiritual conversationalist. Since he is a co-owner of Epoch Coffee in downtown Moncton, I have known of Conor for years now, but this in-depth conversation was long overdue. We dip into his early days with Canadian pop music sensation The Weeknd, drink three marvelously prepared cups of coffee, and dive DEEP into not only his own experiences of God in general and Judaism in particular, but also some of the (good and less-good) ways Judaism & Christianity have historically interacted.I learned a lot in this conversation, not least about Sistema and Reconstructionist Judaism. I also learned (hopefully) how to do a better job recording a pod in-person rather than online… next time. Please, your patience for the audio-quality is requested! Most importantly, though, I learned that while it is obviously difficult to talk about difficult things, it can be worth doing so with safe people, even if you stumble pretty hard over your own words. I truly appreciated Conor's grace to me throughout our chat, but especially in the back quarter when we get into one of the hottest of the hot topics (in my world, at least). During this episode I referenced Carmen Joy Imes' books. Here's a link to the podcast I recorded with her: Episode 31I also referenced my love for David Desteno's “How God Works” podcast. The Image of God (or Imago Dei) is one of the most important doctrines for youth pastors to teach teenagers, because almost every cultural landmine today finds its resolution in what it means to bear the image of God. That's why I'm excited to be talking with Dr. Imes today about her new book, Being God's Image. What is the doctrine of the Image of God and what prompted you to write this book now? Early in the book, you make the distinction between being created IN God's image and being created AS God's image. Could you share a little more about that distinction? What are some areas where the Imago Dei finds a lot of resonance in today's culture, and what are some areas where it's a powerful corrective? What's the relationship between the Imago Dei and the gospel? How can youth workers teach and talk faithfully about the Imago Dei and human dignity in the midst of the effects of sin and the fall? Do you have any practical recommendations for youth workers who want to teach about the Image of God? A viewer asks: “In Genesis 1:27, when it says we were "made in the image of God", What does it mean exactly? I hear people all the time say that it means we were made with the characteristics of God, but I grew and still believe It means we were made in the triune nature of God. We are body, soul, and spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 refers to this when it says "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.” ——— Here's how you can submit your own questions to DiscipleDojo: https://youtu.be/_bEUVpTSWLs More from Carmen Imes: Follow Carmen on Twitter: @carmenjoyimes Carmen's blog: http://www.carmenjoyimes.blogspot.com Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters at https://www.amazon.com/Being-Gods-Image-Creation-Matters-ebook/dp/B0BLD43TVC/ ***Disciple Dojo gifts (such as the shirt JM is wearing in this video!) are available over in our online store! - https://tinyurl.com/24ncuas2 ***Become a monthly Dojo Donor and help keep us going! - https://www.discipledojo.org/donate ***If you are an unmarried Christian looking for community, check out our Facebook group “The Grownup's Table” over at www.facebook.com/groups/grownupstable ------ Go deeper at www.discipledojo.org Subscribe to the Disciple Dojo podcast for more in-depth teaching and discussions: SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/discipledojo Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/26BDZz70HmnT5eoD9BEKQ7 iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/disciple-dojo/id1002934837 Amazon - https://tinyurl.com/uz8dbfet

So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
What if every human being is the image of God? What would that change about how we view ourselves and others? In the episode, Carmen Joy Imes, author of Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters, helps us unpack this critical question. Carmen Joy Imes is an associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University. A graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, she is the author of Bearing YHWH's Name at Sinai, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters, and the editor of Praying the Psalms with Augustine and Friends. Some highlights from our conversation: Carmen shares the distinction between being God's image and bearing God's image – and why she thinks it's critical we understand that we don't just bear the image of God, but we are the image of God. We discuss the creation story found in Genesis 1 and how God creates and fills. She helps us see God's pattern of creation. Carmen shares how the Lord led her in her time meditation on Genesis 1. I love that Carmen has pretty much written an entire book on the creation account, yet God still had something new for her in this passage. We discuss how, when you read the creation account closely, God didn't create a hierarchy between male and female. Carmen shares the implication for why being God's image is so important – and how that gives every human inherent dignity and worth. Carmen and I talk about why the creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 are different. Carmen shares her research on what it means for a woman in Genesis 2:18 to be called a “suitable helper” or an “ezer.” Carmen has profound insight into why she believes a woman was the first to see Jesus after his resurrection. Don't miss this. It's so good. Does creation care and stewarding matter today? Carmen believes so. Listen as she unpacks why our earthly home and bodies still matter. Finally, Carmen encourages us to base our identity in Genesis 1 and 2, as people created by God and in his image, versus Genesis 3, as people marked by the fall and in need of grace. Both are true, but where we start matters. GREAT NEWS! So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Let's go back to the beginning, where it was good - very good. Genesis says, "God created them; male and female he created them." And God gave them the job of ruling and reigning together. This passage may be familiar to you. But as you hear the words, ask the Spirit to help them become new. He will guide you to notice what he has for you. His Word is living and active, so God may help you see something you haven't noticed before. Longtime readers of The Well will recognize Carmen's name from the many articles and prayers that she has published over the years, and so it was a special delight to have a chance to talk with her about her work as a professor and how the different pieces of her life fit together, in addition to her new book. And if you listen to the end of the podcast, you'll hear an excerpt from our conversation in which Carmen offers a practical strategy that she and her family employed to foster connection during some of their busiest years with young children. So jump right in! We're so glad you're here. — Ann Boyd For show notes or more information please visit our article at The Well. How are we to understand the purpose of the Book of Exodus? Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart and what exactly does it mean? Why did God try and kill Moses, but was stopped by Zipporah? What does it mean to take the Lord's name in vain? We discussed these questions and more with Dr. Carmen Joy Imes who has spent significant time in the Book of Exodus and is currently writing a commentary on it. If this conversation interests you Dr. Imes is teaching a summer class at Regent College on the book of Exodus, check it out here. Also, Dr. Imes puts out a weekly reflection and interaction with a Biblical text called Torah Tuesday. When it comes to new technology, there is always as much trepidation as there is excitement…particularly when the technology is potentially world-changing. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is just such a technology! From Chat GPT to Midjourney to deepfake videos…there are as many opinions and predictions as there are people, it seems! So I wanted to bring in someone who has decades of experience in the world of tech security and who is also familiar with current A.I. technology AND who is also as big of a Bible nerd as me! There's only one person I know who fits all of those criteria…my BibleHacking friend, Gregory Richardson! We had a fantastic discussion and I hope it helps all of us better discern (rather than merely react to!) what all is happening in this technological revolution in which we are currently living! What does it mean that human beings, male and female, are made in God's image? A Texas megachurch is facing criticism after a viral TikTok video showed a rehearsal of its Christmas production with drummers flying over the crowd on wires. The church says it's simply offering its best to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Critics say it's an extravagant violation of Jesus' humble spirit. Who's right? New data says Americans are far more isolated and lonely than ever before, and it's not because of Covid. Is the church the solution or part of the problem? And a researcher offers three surprising explanations for why the decline of religion in the U.S. didn't start until the 1990s. Then, Old Testament scholar Carmen Imes answers questions about the book of Exodus. Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? What does it really mean to take God's name in vain? And how do all of the details about the tabernacle apply to Christians today? There's not a lot making Americans hopeful these days. More than half of the country told pollsters last year that they were “extremely worried” about the direction of the country. One in 4 said that “nothing made them hopeful.” Their anxieties: politics, the pandemic, and inflation. This year, existing worries have likely been compounded by fears and anger over mass shootings, the war in Ukraine, more fallen Christian leaders, and sex abuse scandal cover-ups by church leaders, a massive drought on the Southwest side of the country, climate change inaction, spiking fentanyl deaths, a surge in crime, an explosion in homelessness. In the midst of this, why should Christians hope? Carmen Joy Imes is Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University. She has previously joined the show to nerd out about the Bible in light of Trump getting COVID and controversy over the San Francisco school board seeking to drop the names of a lot of well-known Americans from their schools.Imes joined global media manager Morgan Lee to discuss what it looks like to practice hope in the mist of despair and how we move past Christian platitudes and flimsy one-liners to a robust faith that there is more to our present circumstances. Phil explores Peter's answer to this by looking at not only what Peter calls us to do, but crucially how he invites us to do it. Expect to hear from Howard Thurman, Scot Knight, Carmen Joy Imes, Henri Nouwen...and Beatrix Potter.

Old Testament scholar Carmen Joy Imes shares why she works so hard to take the valuable insights from the best of Old Testament study to help God's people today. Join this fun conversation with Carmen, Lynn, and Ingrid as they explore everything from praying the Psalms, bearing God's name as His people, and the implication of being created with God's image. It often gets missed, but the Old Testament has an empowering message for women to play a significant and active role in God's saving work among His people. This is the same work God wants to do through women today. Purchase Bearing God's Name by Dr. Carmen Joy Imes - http://bit.ly/AJPodcast_CarmenImes
In this episode I got to speak with the highly regarded Dr. Carmen Joy Imes. Carmen has been one of the scholars that's been crucial in my own journey of biblical understanding over the past 3 years because she just seemed to keep popping up on all of my favorite scholarly podcasts. She is an Old Testament Scholar whose work on the meaning of bearing God's name and taking the Lord's name in vain has been widely recognized. You can hear some of her discussion on the topic on other popular podcast such as The Bible Project ep. 186; The Disrupters season 1 ep. 4; The Naked Bible Podcast 302 and dozens of other podcasts. In this discussion I wanted to touch more on her own journey and other work that she finds interesting that lay people often miss. Even more, I wanted to pick up on some of the themes of inclusion and representation of women, black and brown people, and other minorities in the world of biblical scholarship. I first heard her touch on some of those ideas in her discussion with Dr. Esau McCauley on the Disrupters podcast. We're sitting down today to talk with Dr. Carmen Imes about the Old Testament law: What is it, and how did it function? How is it like (and unlike) the law that we know and follow in civil society today? How did neglect of the law play out for God's people? And do we need the law from Mount Sinai now that we have the Sermon on the Mount? Dr. Carmen Imes is Associate Professor of Old Testament at Prairie College and author of Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters (IVP). Prof. Carmen Joy Imes joins us to delve into the idea of being created "in the image of God." What's that mean? Who exactly is in God's image? Did we lose it with the "fall"? Does it have moral and ethnical ramifications for us today? Do some traditional understandings of being "in the image" exclude people with various disabilities? Is Adam whose name means earth more akin to God or to earth? Also a magical creature, a wild etymological adventure, and some thoughts about how we evaluate traditional interpretations. Growing up, Carmen Joy Imes had no idea she'd one day be in an academic setting, lecturing on Old Testament to rooms full of men. Raised in an environment that was skeptical of women teachers, Imes deviated from expectations when she embraced her roles in both the home and classroom. Carmen Imes's mastery of the Old Testament more than justifies this incidental rebellion. Her love for the subject is evident, and her familiarity with it is undeniable. While her presence may make some uncomfortable, her unapologetic passion combined with her emphasis on the Old Testament's place in Christian theology deeply influence her students and their scholarship.
It's an honor to welcome Old Testament scholar Carmen Joy Imes to the show to share about her fantastic book Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters. For additional show notes, visit ShaunTabatt.com/331. The Shaun Tabatt Show is part of the Destiny Image Podcast Network.
After spending two chapters teaching on the supremacy of Christ and refuting false teaching, Paul and Timothy turn their attention to the lives of the Colossian Christians. In this long list of commands and prohibitions, we see that the gospel fundamentally changes how we relate to rules, law, and commandments.Discussion QuestionsWhen it comes to your relationship to rules and instructions, which direction do you lean: naturally submissive or naturally resistant?Which areas of the “negative” list are you wrestling with? Relatedly, which elements of the “positive” list do you struggle with and need to grow in? Share with your group.Read Ephesians 4:25-32 and compare to this list in Colossians? Why is it important to remember that lists like these are not exhaustive but representative? How is Jesus the perfect fulfillment of all the commandments of God? How can we help one another to growPrayer PointsTake time in your group for silent, reflective prayer on these commands and prohibitions. Then collectively, give God praise that our relationship with him is based on Christ's perfect life, not our own moral efforts.Pray that we would share the gospel of Jesus, not a list of behaviors that people ought to do. Pray that our lives would look more like Jesus so that we would be effective witnesses. For Further ReadingBearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters by Carmen Joy Imes
