Jay smothers Weird Al with love and appreciation for Al's perfection in his parody. We talk about Mad Magazine, Looney Tunes, pizza, travel, doing what you want, the power of an orchestra, the two pulls of being a comic vs a musician, how a true showman can come out of Linwood, and giving up architecture for being a professional goofball/genius. Bio: FEW WOULD HAVE GUESSED that “Weird Al” Yankovic – who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show– would go on to become a pop culture icon and the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with classic song and music video parodies such as“Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.” Now in his fourth decade as America's foremost song parodist, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including five Grammys® (out of sixteen total nominations) and a string of Gold and Platinum albums. In 2015 and 2016, Weird Al's Mandatory World Tour encompassed 200 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and a sold-out gig at New York's Radio City Music Hall. In the spring of 2018, Al performed 77 shows as part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, where he and his bandmates of over 35 years played setlists composed almost entirely of his original (non-parody) material, and without any of their signature over-the-top theatrics (no costumes, props or video screens). And in 2019 Weird Al followed up his most bare-bones tour with his most extravagant tour ever – Strings Attached – where he and his band were backed for each of their 67 shows by female singers and a full symphony orchestra.Weird Al's 14th studio album, the Grammy® award-winning Mandatory Fun (2014), became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and the first to even reach the top of that chart since 1963. Yankovic set the U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time, taking the top four spots. In addition, “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2).Al has remained active as a recording artist. June 2017 saw the release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Dreamworks), for which Al co-wrote and performed the film's theme song. In August 2017, Al wrote and performed “The North Korea Polka (Please Don't Nuke Us)” for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). In November 2017 Legacy Recordings released Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, a remastered 15-disc box set (including a rarities album) plus a 120-page book of archival photos, all housed in a replica of Weird Al's trademark accordion. Al also recorded cover versions of the Squidbillies theme for Adult Swim and the Ramones' “Beat on the Brat” for a Dr. Demento compilation album, and produced remixes of two hit singles for Portugal. The Man (“Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment”). And March 2018 brought us “The Hamilton Polka,” a frantic tour de force mash-up of 14 songs from the Broadway smash, commissioned by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself and released as part of his “Hamildrops” series. In addition to his cult-hit feature film UHF (1989), his late ‘90s CBS Saturday morning series The Weird Al Show and numerous AL-TV specials he has made for MTV and VH1 over the years, Yankovic has remained a staple of film and television, from appearances on The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Goldbergs and How I Met Your Mother to performing live on the Primetime Emmy Awards and starring in his own concert specials for Disney, VH1 and Comedy Central. In 2015 Yankovic took over as co-host and bandleader for the fifth season of IFC's Comedy Bang! Bang! Currently Al can be heard as the voice of the title character in Disney Channel's animated series Milo Murphy's Law (his other voice acting work includes appearances on Bojack Horseman, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wander Over Yonder, and the DC animated feature Batman vs. Robin). Yankovic added “New York Times bestselling author” to his resumé in 2011 with the release of his children's book, When I Grow Up (HarperCollins), followed two years later by My New Teacher and Me! An animated series based on his children's books is currently being developed in partnership with the Jim Henson Company. 2012 saw the release of Weird Al: The Book (Abrams), an illustrated hardcover on Al's life and career, and in 2015 Yankovic became not only MAD Magazine's cover boy, but the first guest editor in their 63-year history. In 2017 NECA Toys released the second in its line of retro-clothed Weird Al action figures, and in 2018 Funko released two of its own POP! vinyl figures. On August 27, 2018, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded “Weird Al” Yankovic with the 2,643rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It was a total eclipse in Texas, and a disappointing 1-0 loss for SAFC on the road in Las Vegas. Vegas is much improved, and SAFC fell back to some bad habits. The tv product was not great - we were much more impressed with the USL in CBS Saturday afternoon. Finally, we preview this week's home game vs the OC, check out scores around the league, and salute the Champions League and women's soccer in SA. Enjoy!

Diana Powell, in 100 American Crime Writers, wrote: Cabin B-13 is the harrowing tale of a new bride who boards an ocean liner for her honeymoon only to find out the groom has disappeared and that the ship's crew doubt his existence and her sanity. Her fear over her groom's whereabouts is heightened by a threat to her inherited wealth and the stress of not being believed. Cabin B-13 was first broadcast on the American radio program Suspense on March 16, 1943, with Ralph Bellamy starring. It was broadcast again on Suspense on November 9, 1943, this time co-starring Margo and Philip Dorn. The trade publication Radio Daily reported in its December 26, 1948, issue that the play would "have its third airing over CBS Saturday, December 27" — as a standalone program rather than being broadcast as an episode of Suspense. Additionally, the article noted, "Screen executives on the West Coast will hear Cabin B-13 in a special rebroadcast over KNX, Hollywood, Saturday, January 3, 4:00-4:30 p.m. in order to weigh its screen possibilities." On September 11, 1943, Cabin B-13 was used for the premiere of the British Broadcasting Corporation program Appointment with Fear. Richard J. Hand, in his book Listen in terror: British horror radio from the advent of broadcasting to the digital age, wrote, "Carr deliberately chose Cabin B-13 [for the first episode] as he felt it was his best Suspense play and would be an effective opening for this British series in the American style."

[00:30] January 6 Texts (26 minutes)During yesterday's January 6 Committee hearing, Liz Cheney read personal text messages received by Donald Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, during the January 6 protest. Incredibly, the propaganda media are using the messages as proof that Donald Trump organized an insurrection. We're way overdue for another look at an old Saturday morning TV schedule, so let's see what the kids watched on CBS half a century ago while chomping on their Count Chocula. The CBS 1971 Saturday morning lineup included classics like Bugs Bunny (of course), Scooby Doo (the original version), and The Flintstones (reformatted to feature Pebbles and Bamm Bamm, and their modern stone age rock band). The Harlem Globetrotters had their own goofy cartoon, and were still a decade away from battling robots on Gilligan's Island. There were THREE separate cartoons based on Archie characters! (One had an odd connection to Dick Tracy, while another featured the singing voice of a future Charlie's Angel star.) Meanwhile, Help!... It's the Hair Bear Bunch! starred a freaky cartoon bear wearing a belt but no pants. And there's even a weird Hair Bear/Brady Bunch connection. So we are officially delighted. (We might even have a 50-year-old lunch box from one of these shows here at Chickentown Studios...) Plus: Our second concert review of the whole stupid year, because the farewell Monkees tour may be coming to your town! Also: Happy Birthday to Lou Ferrigno. We do actually like him when he's angry. It's the 20th episode of Network Special and we are celebrating by going back to our roots! This week we are taking a ride down south to Hazard County to check out a new dance club owned and operated by 80s heartthrob Scott Baio. In 1983, CBS was excited to announce it's all new cartoon block dedicated to video games and Baio was all too happy to tell kids all about it. Also, we get a look at a reused Kroft puppet and some hijinx courtesy of Boss Hog and Rosco P. Coletrane! Moves are being made in the NBA, a day ahead of the draft. Has Milwaukee done enough for the Freak? Can KD, Kyrie, and Harden coexist and win? New players are opting out in college football.
Another SEC game is off the docket, at this rate, South Carolina and Ole Miss will be on CBS Saturday afternoon.
It's another cartoon-themed episode, as we continue our look at the Saturday morning TV landscape of 1990. This time we've tuned into CBS and found some long-running favorites (Muppet Babies, Garfield and Friends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pee Wee's Playhouse) and a couple of short-lived oddities (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures, and yes, Dink the Little Dinosaur.) Our discussion includes Barbara Billingsley, Lorenzo Music, a couple of cartoon chickens (Camilla and Sheldon), and a tooth-brushing turtle. Also: John Lithgow sings, George Carlin is pumped up like Hans and Franz, and the DragonCon American Sci-Fi Classics Track has serial killers battling cereal mascots. We're continuing our look at the Saturday morning cartoon landscape forty years ago, but we're changing the channel to see what was happening on CBS. (Sorry, no remote control, kids. Gotta get off the couch and turn the stupid knob.) CBS ran a bunch of Filmation shows that year, including some odd remakes of older properties (Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Tom and Jerry) and surprisingly strong versions of a couple of action/adventure legends (Tarzan and the Lone Ranger). Hanna Barbera supplied a new (and strangely violence-free) Popeye series, as well as one of our very favorite monster cartoons... Drak Pack! And of course, Bugs Bunny and Road Runner ruled the morning for ninety whole minutes. So get yourself some Frankenberry and join us. If you keep the TV going deep into the afternoon, you might even spot Kornflake's grandfather on Candlepin Bowling. So, you know, on with the show, this is it.

CBS ran a bunch of Filmation shows that year, including some odd remakes of older properties (Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Tom and Jerry) and surprisingly strong versions of a couple of action/adventure legends (Tarzan and The Lone Ranger). Hanna Barbera supplied a new (and strangely violence-free) Popeye series, as well as one of our very favorite monster cartoons… Drak Pack! If you think this episode’s title is odd, just brace yourself. Today the tangents are flowing fast and furious between Megan, Tierney, and Jim O’Kane. This is an iconic minute of MASH where we see Captain Peterson bested, ask Trapper how he wants his steak cooked, start an operation on the congressman’s son, AND meet Colonel Merrill and his boss mustache. But if you think having that much to talk about will stop us from also discussing astronauts, Mr. and Mrs. Radar’s autumnal Ottumwa Iowa retirement, Groucho’s tv career, Jack Armstrong All American Boy and his progeny, townie license plates, the CBS Saturday night lineup and what it meant to American culture, and Jim’s massive crush on Jo Ann Pflug, well, then you don’t know MASH Minute. Make yourself comfortable because Grandpa has a lot to tell us about the ancient history of the early 1970s and you won’t want to miss his story of sneaking into the movie theater to see this for the first time.

As they make their way through the fall 1983 Saturday morning animated lineup for CBS, Will and Dan bear witness to a surreal descent into abject madness, which astonishingly does not come at the hands of obnoxious tiny puppy knights, flashdancing beagles, or stock car racing moonshiners facing off against the grand wizard of the leprechauns. What is donut?

Sean and Dave want to know if you have you ever had the following thought, "I'd love to adapt a Black Comedy anthology that used to be a 1950's comic book, that then HBO adapted into a live action show, but I want to remove all the sex, perversion, and gore, so kids can watch it!" Extremely relatable, huh? Well, that's exactly what the CBS Saturday morning cartoon block of programming did in the 90's with Tales from the Cryptkeeper. If you were ever a fan of the HBO series in the 90's then you'll remember each show was had an introduction from the Cryptkeeper himself. So, how would you do this type of intro for a children's cartoon? Well, you'd pepper in nothing but "Dad jokes" and bad puns. How will Sean react to the idea of Werewolf tea? Will Dave finally become a franchise owner for a health food store? All of this and more on this week's episode of Saturday Mourning Cartoons! This week's episode is brought to you by "thoughts." Thoughts are the things that happen in your brain! "Think'em, think'em real good!" Join us next week as the SMC crew has special guest comedian Evan Valentine on the show to finish up our CBS Saturday morning cartoon block with the non so covert WildC.A.T.s!
Steve Cooper talks with former child actor Rodney Allen Rippy. Rodney appeared in TV commercials for the fast-food chain Jack in the Box in the early 1970s, as well as in numerous roles in television and movies. In the advertisements, Rippy was seen trying to wrap his mouth around the super-sized Jumbo Jack hamburger. The tag line "It's too big to eat!" (pronounced "It's too big-a-eat!") became a catch-phrase. Another spot showed Rippy giggling while singing the song Take Life a Little Easier, which was released as a single by Bell Records in the fall of 1973 in the wake of the commercial's popularity. He subsequently had guest-roles in many popular television shows, including The Six Million Dollar Man, Marcus Welby, MD, Police Story, and The Odd Couple (where Rodney played the owner of the building where Oscar and Felix lived). He also appeared frequently on talk shows such as The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Dinah's Place with Dinah Shore and had a co-starring role on the CBS Saturday morning children's show The Harlem Globetrotters Popcorn Machine. He now is a partner in the film production company, Bow Tie Productions, and spokesman for Hurricane Housing Relief. He worked at KABC-TV in Los Angeles, California. A resident of Carson, California, he has served as Master of Ceremonies for the Carson Relay For Life. He is also a national director of marketing with Metro Networks.
