Standard Orbit 298: The Rise Of Fan Service JJ Abrams, Star Trek, Star Wars And Fan Service. With the recent release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, JJ Abrams has now directed two Star Trek and two Star Wars films. Each respective first film was embraced by the overwhelming majority of casual and die hard fans alike, while each respective second has been divisive to say the least. Is fan service (or attempted fan service) to blame? This week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart discuss the concept of fan service and how perhaps too much creeped in to JJ's second films in each franchise. What is fan service, is it what the writers and directors of our favorite franchises think it is, does is do more harm than good, and do we as fans really even want it? Standard Orbit 287: Bigger is Better The Size of Starships It is time to geek out with Hayley and Ken as we discuss the size and functionality of starships in the Star Trek universe and beyond. Why are the bad ships always bigger? Should size even matter? Did the Kelvin timeline universe get it right or were they too big? Starships have always been a mainstay and as much of a character as the cast. Ken and Hayley discuss the potential reasons for the size of the ships between the series and in the Kelvin timeline. Standard Orbit 286: Return To Yesterday Season 4 Episode Pitches. As we all know, the USS Enterprise was on a five year mission. Unfortunately that mission was cut short by NBC when it canceled Star Trek after just three seasons, but what if it wasn't? This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart each pitch a story idea for a hypothetical fourth season of TOS.  What kind of episodes would Zach and Hayley have wanted to seen on TOS? How would an almost certainly slashed budget affect these stories? What guest stars or alien races would make return appearances? Is there time travel involved? Spoiler: Of course there is! High Drama of TOS and The Movies. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Hayley Stoddart talk the most dramatic moments of TOS and the movies. Is the impact of Spock's death diminished by his resurrection? Which Enterprise's destruction carries the most weight? Standard Orbit 256: We Forgot Nimbus III Romulans and Klingons.    This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the the two primary antagonists of The Original Series: the Romulans and the Klingons. One is an honorable foe with a cloaking device and a code of duty, the other is a ruthless adversary who often works behind the scenes to undermine the Federation by proxy. Which is which you ask? That depends on the era of Star Trek you're watching! The Romulans and Klingons have shared and swapped many cultural traits over the years, sometimes in-universe like ship designs, other times by merely the executive decision of writers. Standard Orbit 212: Patching Up Continuity Uniform Patches, Starships Names, and Registry Numbers.   Until Star Trek: The Motion Picture, each Starfleet vessel has its own unique insignia patch on its uniforms...or did it? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by Larry "Dr. Trek" Nemecek to discuss this hotly debated topic among fandom and how these seemingly incongruous and contradictory uniform patches can be reconciled within greater Star Trek continuity. From production memos in response to The Omega Glory to the long-awaited Defiant uniform patches finally turning up on Enterprise, we attempt to trace the confusing history of the Starfleet insignias, and the starships and registry numbers associated with them. Standard Orbit 211: Kicked Upstairs Gene Roddenberry and Harve Bennett    From the launch of the original series through Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Gene Roddenberry was synonymous with all things Star Trek. With the franchise's future in the balance and in order to bring in a new movie with strict cost control and more resembling the TV show: Harve Bennett was brought in to deliver.  Zach and Ken discuss this interesting dynamic between these two men and the unpleasantness surrounding their relationship. Standard Orbit 210: Foreheadgate The Evolution of the Klingons.   There are few races in Star Trek as iconic as the Klingons. Introduced in the first season of The Original Series, the warrior race remains as relevant as ever over fifty years later playing an integral role in the latest entry in the franchise, Discovery. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore talk the Klingons' ever-changing appearance from Kor to T’Kuvma, if the franchise may have gone too far in explaining out-of-universe production aesthetics in-universe, and how the Klingons are forever tied to the Romulans. Star Trek Continues. The Original Series quite infamously was never able to complete the five year mission that was promised in its opening credits. This sly attempt by Gene Roddenberry to will a five season run of his new series into existence by mere narration was unfortunately not to be. In recent years many Star Trek fan productions have taken it upon themselves to complete the mission, and this month Star Trek Continues has done exactly that. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Zach Moore is joined by host of Continuing Mission Tony Robinson to discuss this fan favorite fan series now that it's concluded, how it fits in with TOS, and also tease an exciting new collaboration coming soon to Trek.fm! Shuttlecraft in TOS. As we see across the Star Trek franchise, a flight in a Federation shuttle craft is probably the riskiest thing you can do in the 23rd and 24th centuries. While it set the standard for all future "stranded in a shuttlecraft" stories with The Galileo Seven, TOS used its shuttles in more ways than just that and in this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss all such instances in The Original Series and the films. Standard Orbit 178: The Gospel According to Star Trek   Author Kevin C. Neece Interview.   On first glance, the Christian worldview and the humanistic worldview of Star Trek would seem to have nothing in common. After all Star Trek takes place in a future when religion has essentially vanished from Earth. In that case, how can there even be a "gospel according to Star Trek"? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by author and speaker Kevin C. Neece to answer that very question. Through The Gospel According to Star Trek book series and his The Undiscovered Country Project, Kevin poses questions about the spiritual significance of Star Trek as both popular art and cultural phenomenon from a Christian perspective.
