This episode is brought to you by Ancient & Brave, Strong Coffee Company and Audible. What if your anxiety, exhaustion, gut issues, insomnia, chronic tension, or even emotional numbness weren't random… but your body trying to communicate unresolved stress and trauma? Somatic healing expert and When the Body Speaks author Liz Tenuto—better known online as "The Workout Witch"—joiins us to unpack how trauma gets stored in the nervous system and why so many people stay stuck even after years of therapy, self-help, and "doing all the right things." Liz explains the science behind somatic healing, bottom-up nervous system regulation, neurogenic tremors, emotional release, chronic stress physiology, and how seemingly "normal" symptoms like jaw clenching, gut issues, fatigue, insomnia, and brain fog may actually be signs your body never fully completed the stress response. This conversation blends neuroscience, emotional healing, nervous system education, and practical tools into one of the deepest conversations yet on what it truly means to move Ever Forward. The same part of your brain behind every bad habit you have ever had is the exact same part that builds your best ones. Which means the traits you have been trying to fix your whole life might be the very thing that builds your biggest success. That connection is exactly what Liz Tenuto, better known as The Workout Witch, lived. She went from posting somatic exercises from her bed during a divorce to building an eight figure business that has helped millions of people heal, and the only thing that changed was what she pointed her energy at. In this third Fitness Fridays episode with Liz, she breaks down the brain science behind habit formation, why HIIT might be working against you, and what her origin story reveals about turning your worst traits into your greatest asset. If you have ever felt like the hardest working version of you is still not getting results, this is the episode that explains exactly why. What's Discussed: (0:00) The business model nobody in her industry saw coming. (1:43) Why she started posting from bed and never expected what happened next. (3:59) Half a million a month and not a single brand deal. Here is why. (6:18) The one thing that separates her from every other somatic healer. (9:50) Why the workout you think is helping you lose weight is doing the opposite. (10:50) What stress actually does to your weight that has nothing to do with food. (13:08) The sequence that makes high intensity exercise actually work. (14:03) Why the easier Pilates class might be giving you the harder workout. (17:01) The muscle nobody talks about that controls more than you think. (18:25) The part of your brain behind every bad habit you have ever had. (19:31) How she turned her worst trait into the thing that built everything. (21:44) Where to find Liz and try her exercises for free. Hey team, today I'm talking with Liz Tenuto, more widely known as the Workout Witch. Liz is a somatic specialist with a degree in psychology from UCSB, who has spent over a decade helping people release chronic stress through movement. She's also the author of Moving Through Trauma, which hit shelves in January. Liz's work bridges the gap between psychology and physical health, specializing in how trauma and stress manifest as psychological issues like gut problems, insomnia, and chronic pain. In our conversation today, we're diving into the world of somatic exercises, which are slow conscious and gentle movements designed to enhance the mind-body connection and nervous system regulation.  We talk about how traditional no pain, no gain fitness often backfires for the ADHD brain, the nuances of introception, and why your body might feel stuck in a functional freeze without you even realizing it. If you'd like to follow along on the show notes notes page, you can find that at hackingyouradhd.com. All right, keep on listening to find out how to get your body and brain on the same page. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/294 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episodes Top Tips While random stimming may help us cope in the moment, it doesn't necessarily lead to long-term nervous system regulation. By intentionally performing certain somatic exercises, we can actually shift our baseline physiology over time. When we are in a state of functional freeze or understimulation, the goal isn't to lower our energy levels, but instead to move from a shutdown state up into a regulated and alert state of ease known as the ventral vagal state. Because ADHD involves a bottom-up nervous system, our mental state is often a direct reflection of our physical tension. By consciously relaxing, we can trigger an immediate emotional shift, even if we don't realize our own stress levels.

The field of somatics has one uncomfortable truth most people aren't ready to hear: you cannot think your way out of trauma or chronic stress. If the stress response of the body never gets discharged through physical movement, your body stays on high alert. Some people still write somatics off as “woo-woo”. That gap between what the science actually says and what people assume is exactly why I wanted to go deeper with Liz Tenuto, better known as The Workout Witch. Liz holds a degree in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara, is certified in Pilates and Reiki, and spent six years being mentored in the Feldenkrais Method under Augusta Moore. She got herself off beta blockers for anxiety using the same somatic exercises she now teaches. In part two of this three-part Fitness Friday series with Liz, she breaks down the actual science, Polyvagal Theory, the psoas muscle, why betrayal trauma has a biological address in your body, and why your nervous system is still running an operating system designed for surviving predators, not inbox anxiety. If you have ever felt stuck in stress no matter what you try, this is the episode that explains exactly why. What's Discussed: (0:00) How Liz grew to 4.8 million followers and who her audience really is. (1:01) Why somatics bridges the gap where doctors just tell you it's stress. (1:48) How Liz got off beta blockers for anxiety using somatic exercises. (3:12) What somatics can actually help with and how it works for sleep. (9:11) The science behind somatics and how your body stores stress physically (13:33) How trauma gets stored as subconscious muscle tension and shows up as pain. (16:52) Liz's personal story: how quitting dance made her chronic pain worse, not better. (27:05) Sleep positions that reveal your stress state: T-REX ARMS, mountain climber, extreme fetal. (33:21) The psoas muscle: the muscle of the soul and its role as a first responder in fight or flight. (35:13) The gentle 18-day protocol Liz uses before ever touching the psoas. The Greek word "soma" means body. Somatic exercises were first researched in the 1970s as a way to release trauma and stress through tiny physical movements, bypassing the mind entirely.  Decades later, most people still think it sounds like a woo-woo wellness trend. That gap between what the science says and what people assume is exactly why I wanted to sit down with Liz Tenuto. Liz, better known as The Workout Witch, has nearly 5 million followers, 240,000 students, and a 99% success rate with her courses. She holds a degree in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara, is certified in Pilates and Reiki, and spent six years being mentored in the Feldenkrais Method under Augusta Moore. With fifteen years of hands-on teaching experience, she bridges science, movement, and somatic practice to help people release stress, stored trauma, and tension from their bodies, using the same methods that got her off beta blockers for anxiety. Her work has been featured in USA Today, BBC News, Harper's Bazaar France, and more.   In this Fitness Friday episode with Liz, part one of a three-part series, she shows me several somatic exercises live on the podcast. One of them nearly put me to sleep on camera! She also breaks down why your body holds onto stress long after your mind has moved on, what chronic stress is actually doing to the way you look and feel, and why so many people struggle with pain, bloating, and sleep issues that no doctor can fully explain. If you have ever felt like your body is working against you no matter what you try, this conversation will change how you think about where stress actually lives and what it takes to release it. What's Discussed: (00:00) What is somatic healing and how it differs from meditation, breathwork, and talk therapy. (03:20) How a ballet dancer with PTSD discovered somatics out of desperation. (04:06) The first somatics class that changed everything and why it made her cry in the bathroom. (04:42) How somatics reestablishes the mind-body connection when your nervous system is stuck in freeze. (05:27) The live forehead exercise that calms your fight-flight response in under a minute. (07:25) Why this simple exercise can make you feel like falling asleep almost instantly. (07:37) The cranial nerve behind the forehead exercise and why it works so fast. (08:23) The ear pulling exercise that stimulates your vagus nerve and gives you an instant energy boost. (10:40) How bilateral stimulation connects somatic exercises to EMDR therapy. (11:44) What CPTSD is and why somatic exercises help people heal trauma without verbalizing it. (12:21) The different schools of somatics that have been researched since the 1970s. (13:29) The somatic exercise for sciatica using a figure four position and gentle rocking. (15:19) How stress accelerates aging and why chronic stress caused a gray streak during a toxic marriage. (16:57) Why your body diverts energy away from repair systems when stuck in survival mode. (19:48) The scalp exercise that brings blood flow back and helps repigment gray hair. (21:41) The "chair twerking" bloating exercise that can make a difference in as little as three days. (24:18) Why sequencing matters and one exercise alone is not enough for lasting results. What if your anxiety isn’t just in your mind, but in your body? Why do certain pains never fully go away? Can tiny movements actually release stored trauma? What if your body isn’t broken but just protective? In this episode of A Really Good Cry, Radhi sits down with somatic healing expert Liz Tenuto to explore how emotional stress and trauma live in the body, and how to safely release it. Liz explains that “soma” means body, and somatic healing focuses on small, intentional micro-movements that help regulate the nervous system. Unlike traditional workouts or even yoga, somatics is about restoring agency, reconnecting the mind and body so you feel safe inside yourself again. They discuss how unprocessed stress can show up as jaw tension, tight hips, gut issues, panic attacks, and chronic pain. Liz breaks down nervous system responses like fight, flight, freeze, and dissociation, and explains why shaking, or neurogenic tremors, can actually be the body completing a stress cycle. In this episode, you’ll learn: How trauma gets stored physically in the body. Why jaw, neck, and hips hold stress. What the freeze response actually feels like. How to calm panic through simple body-based tools. The difference between nervous system safety and intensity. Why healing is about regulation, not perfection. This episode is a reminder that your body is always trying to protect you - and with the right tools, you can teach it that it’s safe again. Allora egli cominciò a imprecare e a giurare: «Non conosco quell'uomo!».

Are you ever going to have sex again? It is the question so many couples in midlife are quietly asking. Sex has become obligatory. Or it has disappeared. Hormones have shifted. Resentment has built. Communication has broken down.In this episode of Taboo To Truth, I sit down with clinical sexologist Dr. Stacy Friedman to talk about how couples move from duty sex or no sex back to real desire. We break down spontaneous versus responsive desire. We explain why sex starts to feel like a chore. We talk about what happens after the lust phase fades and oxytocin replaces testosterone. We also cover:Why many women need arousal before desireHow long term relationships shift biologically and emotionallyWhat to do if you have not had sex in months or yearsHow removing the expectation of intercourse can rebuild intimacyHow to handle mismatched libidos without resentmentWhy collaboration works better than compromiseIf you feel stuck in the friend zone with your own partner, this conversation will give you a practical roadmap back to connection. And if you are a man trying to understand what menopause is doing to your relationship, my NEW course Men Meet Menopause is built for you! Half of men over 40 will experience erectile dysfunction. In this episode, I explain why ED is rarely only about sex. I walk you through what erections actually reveal about cardiovascular health, metabolic function, hormones, pelvic floor tension, and fertility.I break down why urologists call the penis a barometer of heart health. The blood vessels that support erections are smaller than the ones that support your heart and brain. That means they often show damage earlier. In many cases, ED appears years before a heart attack or stroke.I also talk about diabetes, high cholesterol, nitric oxide, testosterone shifts, excess body fat, and sperm quality after 40. We cover pelvic floor tension in men and why many men struggle with tight muscles, not weak ones.I share evidence informed tools some men use while they work on underlying health. These are not cures. They are supports. Most importantly, I reframe ED as information. Not shame. Not failure.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this special episode I spend some time with a couple who has a new book coming out this summer on the Star Wars radio dramas that were on NPR back in the 80's and 90's. The book is titled ‘The Winds that Shook the Stars,' and both authors, John & Mary Jo Tetuno talk about a little about how these came to be and how the book came together. From the description: ‘A comprehensive history of the Star Wars audio dramas. An expanded radio dramatization of the original Star Wars trilogy, produced in 1981, 1983, and 1996 respectively, produced and broadcast by National Public Radio as part of NPR Playhouse. These radio serials were made with the full co-operation of George Lucas, who for one dollar each sold the rights to KUSC-FM, the public radio affiliate at his alma mater, the University of Southern California. Lucas also allowed the use of original sound effects and music from the films.

In this episode, I discuss a few ways to get the most out of your practice when you are short on time. The most important thing is what you practice. Instead of playing the same riff or song, you have been playing for the last 20 years. Make sure you have structure and are practising the seven essential skills which are: PickingChordsArpeggiosScalesRhythmNotesAural Break up your practice into four different sections: Picking/Warm-upSkill OneSkill TwoSong For skill one and skill two choose from the list of seven essential skills and rotate through the remaining skills every time you practice. The goal is to get to the end of the week having practised all seven skills. You can spend as long as you like on each section such as 5 minutes on each section totalling 20 minutes or if you are short on time even just one minute on each section. A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing. Have a clear goal when practising, I want to get my G to C chord change quicker is not clear whereas I want to change between G & C 10 times in 30 seconds is clear. When coming up with a goal make sure it is a smart goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Here are a couple of apps to download to allow you to practice when you do not have a guitar: Tenuto - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tenuto/id459313476 Ear Master - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/earmaster-music-theory/id1105030163 Hope you enjoyed this episode! see you next week.

Viel Spass beim Nachspielen. Toys with Tenuto. Science Fiction and toys have gone hand in hand since studios realized that they could make money off of their intellectual properties, and both Star Trek and Star Wars were no exception to the flood of creative ideas to grace the toy shelves. Beginning with toys that were re-labelled as "Astro" toys that weren't originally created for Star Trek, all the way through the current line of Eaglemoss star ships, we take a nostalgic, fun filled trip back to days of garage sales and dollar discount bins filled with wonderful toys. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined by sociology professor and Star Trek expert John Tenuto to discuss the fascinating history of Star Trek toys. We also discuss toy lines that were abandoned, toys that continue to get reissued, and we even offer some advice for the aspiring collector of goodies from the final frontier. Melodic Treks: A Star Trek Music Podcast

Five Film Favorites with John Tenuto. John Tenuto has been a sociology professor for 20 years, most of those at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. He and his wife, Maria Jose, have become experts on Star Trek through personal research and the friendships they have cultivated with talent from both behind and in front of the camera. Their research on Star Trek's production history, Star Trek library archives, and Star Trek's cultural influences have been featured on numerous radio stations, television shows, and newspapers including USA Today, BBC Radio, WGN News, and the Chicago Tribune—not to mention many podcast episodes right here on Trek.fm. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by John Tenuto to discuss the scores, composers, and behind-the-scenes information on the Star Trek films. We talk about the music that played at the Tenuto wedding, what part of Titanic inspired Michael Piller when writing Star Trek: Insurrection, the budget for film scores, Cliff Eidelman's influence on and Giacchino's additions to the franchise, and John's five favorites from the films. We also find out whom John would choose to compose for Star Trek 2017. Chapters Intro (00:00:00) "Nimbus III" (excerpt from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, composed by J. The Road to The Wrath of Khan. While The Motion Picture did its job of resurrecting Star Trek on the big screen, it was the second outing of Kirk and crew that really propelled the franchise forward. Nicholas Meyer, a director who was not a Trekkie, somehow “got” the very core of Star Trek and put together once of the most amazing stories ever filmed. But the road from initial idea to final cut was a lot less straightforward than the flowing narrative might suggest. In this episode ofThe Ready Room we are joined by Star Trek historian Larry Nemecek and Sociology professor John Tenuto to explore the genesis of Star Trek II, the creative choices that led to the film we know, and a wealth of behind-the-scenes information that has never been shared anywhere before. Tenuto has researched more deeply into the Nicholas Meyer archives and the life of Ricardo Montalban than perhaps anyone else in the world. In the process he uncovered the minutiae of “Space Seed” and The Wrath Khan as well as connections that indicate that Khan is indeed the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness.   In news we cover new information about the Star Trek console game release date, William Shatner's plans for a TNG documentary, three bonus features planned for the Enterprise Season One Blu-ray set, new images from Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams making a terminally ill fan's final dream come true, Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pine on the cover of EMPIRE, and some of the first details of this summer's edition of the Star Trek Geek Tours. Plus, we mark the 20th anniversary of Deep Space Nine by remembering the day that “Emissary” premiered.

Matter Stream: Science, Creativity, and the World Inspired by Star Trek

John Tenuto. Few characters have endured in the hearts of Star Trek fans like Khan Noonien Singh. And one of the primary reasons is the man who portrayed him: Ricardo Montalbán, the Mexican born actor who became one of America’s most enduring figures of radio, theatre, television, and film. Despite making only two appearances in the franchise, Montalbán influenced Star Trek in a way few have. Yet his contributions to entertainment extend far beyond the bounds of the 23rd century. Facing many obstacles in his life, Montalbán defied the odds to become an inspiration to millions. In this episode of Matter Stream we’re joined by John Tenuto, sociology professor at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. This month Tenuto will be presenting three special events celebrating the life of Montalbán, the history of Star Trek fandom, and the making of Montalbán’s most famous film: The Wrath of Khan.
