Who is winning the chicken wars? This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast A Deeper Dive features a discussion on recent earnings with RB Executive Editor Lisa Jennings. A huge number of earnings have come in and many of them are head-scratchers. While a lot of chains have done really well, like Wingstop and its 22% same-store sales number, others have not, such as KFC and its sales decline. We discuss that issue, and what the first quarter means for the chicken market in general, including Popeyes and Chick-fil-A. We also contrast the performance of Chipotle and Starbucks, and why one chain can do well despite concerns about prices, while another cannot. We're talking earnings on A Deeper Dive so please check it out.

Then the Wolf uncovers his #1 recommendation for back-office franchisee solutions (hint: it's a software that's near and dear to his heart), before dissecting the differences between chains and franchises. Plus, who will win the Nashville Chicken Wars? Or do all chicken franchises come out the loser if the market has hit its peak saturation point? We then discuss the Alabama boat dock brawl. Lizzo is getting cancelled for body shaming her dancers amongst other things. Jaime wants you to watch the Johnny Football Netflix documentary. We tell Jaime not to take drugs from a stranger and even better don't do drugs at all. We talk about Phil Michelson's crazy gambling career. I didn't order barbecue but instead ordered the fried chicken sandwich as an ode the Chicken Wars in Season 1. I will definitely stamp this one the crunchy juicy as Hector would say. They also have some fried spare ribs that we've talked about but never tried. Maybe next time. Jaime would like to make a trip out there to try the chicken fried steak. My cousin cooks us up some Loco Mocos. Jaime disrespects the whole Nation of Hawaii by describing it as meh. He also cooked up some Pikana steaks which came out great. We talk about all you can eat restaurants and what are the best buffet options when it comes to food. 30:00 Behind the Red Carpet. It's the end of the Summer so we talk summer blockbusters we've seen and even more that we haven't seen. I run through the top 12 earning summer blockbusters of Summer 2023. Have you ever wanted to hear takes from movies the critics haven't seen well then you've come to the right place. Hiram shares his love for Tom Cruise but he's not Jaime's favorite. We give an animated Spider-Man movie some love but don't think they can do a live action version of this one. Barbie crosses the Billion dollar threshold in a very short amount of time. Jaime thinks Chris Pratt is so hot right now. We also talk some Dallas Cowboys football and how Jaime is barely holding on to the band wagon. We do something a little different on this episode as we do a year in review on some of the more memorable moments and guest that we had on the podcast in 2021. We start off talking about our first episode where we really didn't know what we were doing. Our first guest joins the podcast Nick "I'm not Hollywood" Lopez. Many other guest joined the podcast throughout the year including Captain Mike, The Queen of BBQ, Chillin and Grillin and many more. In this conversation, you’ll find out why: Being efficient can be smarter than being fancy; Transferring the experience of the restaurant’s interior to the exterior is important; Being calculated and methodical in your growth is a wise expansion strategy; It’s never too late to bring on an equity partner; You should go toe to toe with your competitors, even if it requires major change. Kiana talks about how social media has changed her perspective on herself and the content that she produces. Before that we talk about stuff on our mind where we dive into the “Chicken Wars” and NYC's new vaccine passport requirements for indoor activities such as dining and going to the gym.
