What if the key to healing trauma lies in the unexpected fusion of military discipline and psychedelic therapy? This episode features an enlightening conversation with Army veteran Mark Cunningham, who reveals his journey from the battlefields of Afghanistan to the nuanced world of MDMA-assisted therapy. With a rich background in anthropology and marriage and family therapy, Mark shares how his experiences overseas not only reshaped his view of military service but also fueled his passion for addressing moral injury and PTSD among veterans. His story serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of sharing one's experiences in the quest for healing.Together, we explore the profound impact of military service on personal identity and moral beliefs, diving deep into concepts like moral injury and its distinction from PTSD. Mark introduces wisdom from figures like Claude Anshin Thomas and Thich Nhat Hanh, highlighting the role of mindfulness and Zen Buddhism in addressing these complex issues. We also venture into the evolutionary lessons from our primate relatives, bonobos and chimpanzees, examining what their cultural adaptations can teach us about human evolution and the modern challenges young men face in defining masculinity. The episode wraps up with a look at the transformative power of MDMA-assisted therapy and the broader societal implications of psychedelic use. Mark shares insights from his therapeutic practice, discussing how MDMA therapy can calm the fear response and foster trust, offering veterans a path to profound healing. We also touch on cultural perspectives around psychedelics, considering decriminalization efforts in Portugal and cannabis legalization in Colorado. As Mark and I reflect on our own journeys, we emphasize the importance of community and shared experiences, underscoring the healing power of connection for veterans transitioning to civilian life. What do engaging with our suffering, breaking from addiction, and knowing our true nature have to do with beating the prosecution? Join Jon's riveting talk with Claude AnShin Thomas who has travelled the path between fighting in the thick of the Vietnam war to now being a warrior for peace and for helping others, including veterans. Claude ultimately became a mendicant Soto Zen Buddhist monk, meeting people "at the point of their humanity", as Claude says. After leaving Vietnam, Brother Claude pickled himself in drugs, alcohol and sex. Learn how he successfully ended drug and alcohol use with the help of a treatment program, how he became a monk, and how he travels to schools, prisons, war zones, and so many other places where he is invited, wanting to meet with a cross section of people there. Fairfax, Northern Virginia criminal defense / DUI lawyer Jon Katz first met Claude around 2005, when Claude completely revealed the inner turmoil he underwent during and after his fighting in Vietnam, his life committed to service to others, and about living in peace with unpeacefulness. It is not a stretch to say that the courthouse is full of turmoil, and also of possibilities, starting with the criminal defense lawyer and defendant quieting their minds, being in the present, and, again, living in peace with unpeacefulness. If you like what you hear on this Beat the Prosecution episode number 28, please visit Claude's organization's website Zaltho.org, and read and share his essential autobiography At Hell's Gate- A Soldier's Journey from War to Peace, and read his other books On the Edges of Peace, and Bringing Meditation to Life. And through this suffering she can be hurtful to other people. How can I be connected to her and have her in my life but not always get hurt by her? 23:13 I have a question about something you said on a podcast about a comment on social media about you do not following “real” Zen. Can you help me understand this? 27:52 I have heard the statement that it is up to me how much I let something or someone hurt me or anger me. What is your experience how much determination is really involved in that? 33:15 I know you make commitments in the morning, generally toward life. Is there any time you also ask for help let say, to the greater reality of the universe or interconnectedness, that I could use some help? 35:02 How do you digest all the suffering you are exposed to, the personal and also the wider suffering? 39:20 How are we not broken? 40:44 Are you worried for the future of your grandchildren in relation with climate change? 43:02 During the meditation practice I notice my way of being with thoughts when they come up, is different. I am wondering if that is natural and part of the process or if I am imposing things on my thoughts which at times can seem harsh? 49:07 My conditioning around death is rather dark and heavy. In the spirit of having more balance would you think it would be good to look a little more at it in a celebratory way? 52:04 There are behaviors we need to stop, and we stop those behaviors because we know that is for the better, right? …. Isn't that the same thing with the thoughts?

These are questions and topics that Claude AnShin Thomas - fully ordained Zen Buddhist Monk in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition - reflects on. He reminds the listener of how to stay awake to life and how to understand the trappings of a deluded mind more deeply. This episode was recorded during a zoom questions&response session with a German-speaking audience. How do you deal with science that is killing living beings to reach conclusions?   07:48 How can I deal with the feeling of loneliness that drives me to cling or hang on to the ones I love. How can I surrender to the reality of my loneliness without suffering?     11:48 How can practice inform me about anything other than practice if all I do is focus on the essential point?   16:37 Amnesty International has criticized the Ukraine for strategically using human beings in its warfare. Is it ok to criticize the Ukraine?   19:07 How do I deal emotionally with the fact that in war there are not good people (right side, wrong side)?   21:40 Do you sometimes feel lazy, and if so, how do you deal with the sensation of laziness?   23:10 When you speak of awakening and the essential point, you create a sense of security for me. Is this sense of security something you always had or was there a certain point when it started?   27:30 What is the transfer from teacher to student? What is transferred and how does it work?   30:30 At the retreat you just completed, there was a meditation teacher. What did they offer?   32:38 How has the vow “creations are numberless, I vow to free them,” unfolded for you?   36:55 Do you sometimes have a hard time to focus, and if you do, what do you do with that?   41:55 Claude AnShin adds a more appropriate response to the question regarding science and doing harm.

How can we meditate when it seems like the world is falling apart? How do we titrate our news consumption? What do we do with our fears about World War III? How can we do anything constructive to help given how far away many of us are from the action? Why are so many people so upset about Ukraine when they weren't paying much attention to the wars raging in places like Syria, Yemen, or Ethiopia? Today's guest is uniquely qualified to answer these questions, given his experience in combat. Claude AnShin Thomas is an ordained monk in the Japanese Soto Zen Tradition. At 17, he signed up to fight in Vietnam and spent his tour of duty in the theater of war, surrounded by death and destruction. He came home suffering from an undiagnosed case of PTSD and spent years grappling with addiction and homelessness before he was introduced to Buddhism. He says meditation can help all of us look at the roots of war and violence that we all harbor.Claude Anshin is now the founder of the Zaltho Foundation, dedicated to addressing the causes and consequences of violence in and among individuals, families, and societies. He has served in war zones, hospitals, schools, and prisons. He has also led meditation retreats at sites of war and suffering, and has worked with gang members, guerillas, and refugees. He is the author of the award-winning book At Hell's Gate: A Soldier's Journey from War to Peace, which has been translated into several languages, and Bringing Meditation to Life. This episode explores the above questions and additionally:The narcotic effect of war.How Buddhism helped Claude Anshin be at peace with what he calls his own unpeacefulness, and yet, why, to this day, he has to reckon with his impulse towards violence. Why he doesn't believe there is such a thing as a “just war.”Content Warning: There are discussions of war, violence, suicide, and substance abuse throughout this episode.Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/claude-anshin-thomas-427See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
