Imagine a tool so ancient, yet its relevance in sharpening cognitive abilities is still unmatched. It's my honor to bring you a fascinating conversation with Sensei Miwako as she unwraps the power of the abacus, a tool she believes can transform minds. We journey through her inspiring life story, from the resilience inherited from her visually impaired parents to the life-altering power of the word "it's okay".As we venture deeper, we discuss the role of cognitive skills in today's world. Sensei Miwako is a firm believer in the abacus, or as she calls it, 'advocacy', as an authority in cognitive skill development. She passionately shares her insights on how this tool can refine skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The subject of the American education system inevitably comes up as we question its lack of emphasis on math and the potential dangers of introducing calculators too early. The spotlight then shifts to the adrenaline-infused world of competitive abacus competitions. Sensei Miwako opens up about the sheer delight she takes in molding her students into 'human calculators' and her commitment to helping them clinch victory in regional and national competitions. This episode promises to be a goldmine for educators, parents, and anyone curious about the vast possibilities of the human mind. Did you know that dementia begins developing 20–30 years before any symptoms emerge ... with negative changes beginning in the brain in our 40s and 50s? At age 41, Cat learned that her genotype gives her a 92% chance of developing Alzheimer's. With the threat of early onset Alzheimer's looming, Cat made a series of changes that led her neurologist to ask (after her bloodwork came back): “I've never seen an improvement like this. Did you steal someone's blood??!” Learn how she made her changes stick, how her new lifestyle has led to more entrepreneurial creativity ... and what you can do to have the healthiest brain now and for decades to come! It's a No Brainer: Protect Your Business by Protecting Your Most Valuable Asset. A few years ago, Cat Hoke became passionate about brain health and preventing cognitive decline (especially Alzheimer's). She give this extremely informative talk to share her personal journey after her doctor told her that, “Your lifestyle is burning your brain out!” She has since made remarkable reversals in her cognitive decline, and despite her current physical limitations, her brain remains sharp. Cat is a previous guest on IMPACT and we felt that her story is so compelling that we needed to share it without our IMPACT audience. So with Cat's permission please enjoy, make notes and change your brain hearth. It's a No-Brainer Part I: Assessing Your Brain Health Disclaimer! Cat is not a doctor or medical expert. This content is for informational purposes only. It is general in nature and is not intended to be medical advice. Consult your own healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and to ensure this content and any recommended products are safe and appropriate for your own medical and physical condition. Cat's hope is that you'll look into resources and go see your doctor if you feel compelled to do so. There is a prevalent myth that there's nothing you can do about Alzheimer's, and this simply isn't true. Part II: Dementia and Alzheimer's Dementia Dementia is not a specific disease. It's an overall term that describes a group of symptoms including memory loss and loss of cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. Part III: Protecting and Nourishing Your Brain What to Eat and What to Avoid (listen here to learn what to eat and what not). “That was actually Darwin's hypothesis in observing his own son and he writes about this in “The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.” He writes about this incipient laughter – he was the first one to recognize this as a built-in response that the baby has that really pulls the baby into the adult world or pulls adults into the infant world. It is such an important emotional connection." Episode Description: We begin with recognizing the profound pleasure of sharing in an infant's laughter. Gina walks us through the stages of involuntary smiling, which begins in utero, to voluntary laughing which begins at about 6 weeks of age. We discuss the influence of parents on whether a baby finds something funny. We also consider ‘incongruity' and how it reveals the baby's 'theory of mind' - what the baby understands about how others' minds work. We come to appreciate teasing, which begins at around 6 months of age, and how it too reflects the baby's awareness of others' expectations. We also learn about the counterintuitive association between secure attachment and laughing. We close with Gina sharing with us her personal history that introduced her to the world of laughing infants. Our Guest: Gina Mireault, Ph.D. is a Developmental Psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Northern Vermont University (USA). Her research focuses on humor development in the first year of life. She investigates how infants detect humorous events with implications for understanding critical developmental milestones like ‘theory of mind', attachment security, and cognitive development. Dr. Mireault's research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and Vermont Biomedical Research Network. Her work has appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals including Human Development, Current Biology, and Infancy as well as in popular media outlets like The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Science Daily, CNN.com, WebMD, American Baby, Parenting, and Salon. Her work has also appeared on NPR's The Takeaway, PBS' NOVA Science Now, NBC Nightly News, and CBC's The Nature of Things. Recommended Readings: Mireault, G. (2022). Lisa Mosconi, Ph.D is focused on research and strategies to preserve brain health, for women in particular, especially those at risk for Alzheimers. Her interest comes from her own strong family history of Alzheimers and the lack of information on how to approach brain health for women. Says Dr. Mosconi, “There's so much confusion around women's health and brain health. The last thing we need is another internet website telling us to buy more supplements. I wanted science to be the focus of my research and my book.” Based on nearly twenty years of research data, Mosconi authored The XX Brain: The Groundbreaking Science Empowering Women to Maximize Cognitive Health and Prevent Alzheimer's Disease. It was an instant New York Times bestseller and her findings were encouraging. A neuro-nutritionist as well as a world-renowned clinical neuroscientist, Dr. Mosconi asserts there is a lot you can do to maintain a healthy brain, as well as reduce the risk or delay the onset of diseases such as dementia and Alzheimers. Her pillars of brain health include diet, exercise, sleep, mental stimulation, stress reduction, and overall good health maintenance. Her book, Brain Food: the Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power, lays out the nutritional essentials for brain health. One of the most important essentials is water. The brain is 80% water, so even the slightest dehydration can impair function. Says Mosconi, “Keeping hydrated can have an immediate impact on mental power.” Mosconi also recommends a diet dense in nutrients that impact brain function. Important nutrients include Omega 3s (salmon, caviar, flaxseed oil), estrogens (dark chocolate), phytonutrients (red wine), and antioxidants (espresso) to name a few. Another key element for brain health is sleep. Dr. Mosconi explains, “Sleep essentially power washes the brain—removing all waste products, impurities, and toxins, including Alzheimers plaques.” Mosconi states that taking care of your brain requires discipline, but the benefits will last a lifetime, “Genetics, environment, and lifestyle literally shape the brain — the female brain in particular. There are all these things that are in our power to do, to promote brain health at any age and for the long-term. We need to take care of our brains because they're literally our most important asset and the sooner you start, the better.”

If you flip a coin and it comes up heads a couple of times in a row, chances are you would bet the next flip will come up tails. That is the perfect example of the “gambler’s fallacy.” Because the next flip is NOT more likely to come up tails. It gets gamblers in Las Vegas in trouble but it can also get you in trouble if you let it enter in to your decision making process. http://news.tamhsc.edu/?post=committing-the-gamblers-fallacy-may-be-in-the-cards-new-research-shows You instinctively know about body language. What do you think of when you hear the term “women’s health?” Traditionally, women’s healthcare is limited to maintaining the health of the reproductive system. Standard practices in women’s health include pelvic exams, mammography, and pregnancy and childbirth services. And while those services certainly have their role, women have many other systems in their body than just their reproductive organs. Just like everything else in healthcare, it’s time to stop compartmentalizing women and start thinking of their bodies as interconnected, holistic beings. Women are far more likely than men to suffer from autoimmune diseases, anxiety, migraines, and Alzheimer’s disease. This is because of unique functions and risk factors in the female brain that have been ignored in the healthcare field—until now. In her new book, The XX Brain, Dr. Lisa Mosconi fills in the gaps on women’s health and shares research-based insights on how to protect and sustain the female brain. Her work is massively shifting the conversation around what actually differentiates women from men, and more importantly how to nurture and appreciate those differences. I hope this episode will inspire and empower you to maximize your brain health and live a longer, healthier life. In this episode you’ll discover: The definition of bikini medicine. How men and women’s brains differ in terms of functionality. The statistics on Alzheimer’s disease prevalence in women. What structural connectivity is. How the XX chromosomes are related to brain function. What estradiol is. The impacts that estrogen has on the female brain. Why the onset of Alzheimer’s is not like catching a cold. How procedures like a hysterectomy affect the brain. The difference between biological age and hormonal age. What the grandmother hypothesis is. In Dr. Lisa Mosconi’s book “Brain Food: The Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power,” the neuroscientist and integrative nutritionist proposes a complete food plan, while calling out health trends, including why that paleo diet you are following may not be ideal, why avoiding gluten could be a terrible mistake and how simply getting enough water can dramatically improve alertness. Join us for a conversation with Dr. Mosconi on the link between what you eat and how you feel, in this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large” on WBAI.
Have you ever heard the statistic that we only use 10% of our brains? That’s not exactly true. Like our bodies, our brains have very specific food requirements. In this episode we speak with Dr. Lisa Mosconi, who is both a neuroscientist and a certified integrative nutritionist, as she explains what should be on our menu.Dr. Lisa Mosconi, whose research spans an extraordinary range of specialties including brain science, the microbiome, and nutritional genomics, notes that the dietary needs of the brain are substantially different from those of the other organs, yet few of us have any idea what they might be. Her innovative approach to cognitive health incorporates concepts that most doctors have yet to learn. Busting through advice based on pseudoscience, Dr. Mosconi provides recommendations, while calling out noteworthy surprises, including the truth behind those delicious sweet potatoes, what's the verdict on cholesterol, good fat vs. bad fat, should you drink coconut oil, and much more.Lisa is also the author of the incredible brand new book, Brain Food: The Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power. She is also the associate director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC)/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, in the Department of Nutrition at NYU Steinhardt School of Nutrition and Public Health, and in the Departments of Neurology and Nuclear Medicine at the University of Florence (Italy). Formerly, Dr. Mosconi founded and was the director of the Nutrition & Brain Fitness Lab at New York University School of Medicine (NYU), and an assistant professor in the NYU Department of Psychiatry, where she served as the director of the Family History of Alzheimer's disease research program. Dr. Mosconi holds a dual PhD degree in Neuroscience and Nuclear Medicine from the University of Florence, Italy, and is a board certified integrative nutritionist and holistic healthcare practitioner. She is well known for her research on the early detection of Alzheimer's disease and is passionately interested in the mitigation and prevention of memory loss through lifestyle modifications including diet, nutrition, and physical and intellectual fitness.
In Part 1 of our conversation with neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Mosconi, we learned more about the connection between estrogen, menopause, and Alzheimer's. In short, in perimenopause and menopause, as estrogen declines, women lose some of the neuroprotective advantages of the hormone, making them more vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease. Make sure to listen to Part 1 to get grounded in the science. In Part 2, Dr. Mosconi lets us in on how we can protect our brains from the cognitive decline of Alzheimer's. Food, exercise, intellectual stimulation all have a part to play, so you're going to want to hear what Dr. Mosconi has to say. (Bonus: a lot of these same tips can help men age better, too.) Learn more about Dr. Mosconi, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, and how you might participate in their research. If you want to start nourishing your brain against age-related decline (“eating for retirement,” as Dr. Mosconi puts it), get your hands on a copy of her fascinating and very readable book, Brain Food: the Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power. “In the next three minutes, 3 people will develop Alzheimer’s. Two of them will be women.” As neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Mosconi says in her article, “Alzheimer’s and Women’s Health, an Urgent Call,” while women account for two-thirds of Alzheimer’s cases, little is being done to understand why simply being a woman significantly increases your risk of developing the disease. Dr. Mosconi is Associate Director of the Weill Cornell Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, where she and her colleagues are working to understand this critical – and critically overlooked – piece of women’s healthcare. Team genneve came across this story because Dr. Mosconi and others have linked Alzheimer’s disease with menopause. They postulate that as estrogen levels subside in a woman’s body as she ages, so do its neurological protections. As Dr. Mosconi puts it: “In straight talk: menopause causes metabolic changes in the brain that seem to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.” “In straight talk: menopause causes metabolic changes in the brain that seem to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.” Fortunately, as Dr. Mosconi has helped identify the problem, she has also helped point to some powerful solutions. Exercise and nutrition, she says, can play a significant role in preventing cognitive decline. In Part 1 of her podcast with genneve CEO Jill Angelo, Dr. Mosconi explains the mechanism behind menopause and Alzheimer’s risk. Come back for Part 2, where she discusses how women can protect their brains as they age. Learn more about Dr. Mosconi, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, and how you might participate in their research. When people act a certain way or don’t make eye contact with you – it causes you to make assumptions about them. Plus, how YOU act and carry yourself causes people to make assumptions about you. All this non-verbal communication is fascinating and Tonya Reiman, Fox News, contributor and author of The Yes Factor: Get What You Want. Say What You Mean (http://amzn.to/2Fuh7rp), joins me to offer some insight and advice to help you better use nonverbal communication to your advantage. If you don’t have time to floss, maybe you should chew some gum. It seems that chewing gum can do a lot for your oral health but you have to chew the right kind of gum and you have to make sure you don’t chew it too long. Listen to hear the explanation. Eat the right foods and your cognitive performance increases. East the wrong foods and the opposite occurs. Neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Mosconi, author of the new book Brain Food: The Surprising Science of Eating for Cognitive Power (http://amzn.to/2HqihAA) explains the connection between food (and drink) and your brain and she offers her list of best and worst foods to eat if you want to optimize your brain’s performance.
