As we here at WAMC celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Roundtable, a little American musical is celebrating 10 years since it premiered in New York City – and quickly became a once-in-a-generation success in terms of reviews, ticket sales, fan enthusiasm, and awards recognition.“Hamilton” opened off-Broadway at The Public Theatre on January 20, 2015 and played there through May 3. It opened on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in early August of 2015, where it is still running. “Hamilton” won 11 Tony Awards, a 2016 Grammy Award for its cast recording, and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has played – and is playing – all over the world. A pro-tape of the production's original cast streams on Disney+ and was a pandemic sensation. But before all of that - “The Hamilton Mixtape” was a work-in-progress, put up in a black-box staged-reading, presented by New York Stage and Film and Vassar College in the summer of 2013. And I did get to be there - in the room where it was starting to happen.

On our latest weekly roundup, we discover that Catherine's children need a refresher on what a 529 college savings plan is, and possibly the number of a good attorney. What we're watching: We started season 2 of Reservation Dogs with episodes 1 and 2: "The Curse" and "Run." As we predicted and feared, Jackie and Elora's journey does not go well. Meanwhile, back home, Willie Jack tries to reverse their bad luck with the (questionable) help of Bucky and Brownie.Catherine's library find this week presents two books that kids might really enjoy, but that may teach some unsavory lessons: Ugly Animals by Laura Marsh and Animals That Make Me Say Ewww! by Dawn Cusick. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed admin club (February 19, 2020); mom friendships (February 19, 2018); and NSFW music (February 22, 2016). Mentioned: HARDY's "Radio Song" and "Ben Franklin's Song" from the Hamilton Mixtape.Next week, we'll watch the next two episodes of Reservation Dogs, season 2: E3 "Roofing" and E4 "Mabel." Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Dessa is many things but mostly she's a cake decorator. For our purposes for this episode, at least. Oh sure, you may know her has a brilliant musician, rapper, poet, and occasional guest host on public radio. You may have heard her work on Welcome to Night Vale or heard her in action as part of the Doomtree collective or on The Hamilton Mix Tape. But we think her real passion is doing up those cakes super fancy. She details for us what kinds of piping equipment and ingredients she uses to make beautiful flowers on all the cakes that she's constantly and giving away to friends. You can learn why roses are easier and daisies are surprisingly tricky as you nod off to sleep with visions of cakes dancing in your head.Listen to Dessa's new album, Bury The Lede, on the music streaming service of your choice. What music have you turned to during hard times? That's the question Dessa's latest album hopes to answer. The award-winning rapper, singer, writer, and podcast (and sometimes 1A) host has been in the game for a while. She came up as part of the Minneapolis rap collective, Doomtree. She's also the author of "My Own Devices: True Stories from the Road on Music, Science, and Senseless Love."But like many of us, her last few years weren't easy. And her new music, including "Hurricane Party" and pop-forward "Chopper," is her way of reckoning with — and dancing away — those feelings. We discuss Dessa's new album with her and the influence of pop music. Ahmed stars as the British-Pakistani rapper Zaheer—stage name Zed—and he co-wrote the film with Bassam Tariq. “It was very much a kind of inward journey,” Ahmed tells David Remnick. “It was very much about holding up a mirror and hoping that in the honesty and the vulnerability of that exercise, people would just connect emotionally—even if they couldn't necessarily connect to the specificity of the experience. But for those who could connect to that specificity, you would be, like, ‘Jesus Christ, I never thought I'd see that onscreen!' ”

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome Atlantic Records VP of A&R and Artist Development Riggs Morales to the Upper West Side! Riggs discusses growing up in Washington Heights, a kid in love with comic books, riding the subways to avoid school, a terrible hustler with a great work ethic, who had an interest in the music business, but no way in, and the break he caught when he met the legendary hip-hop writer Bonz Malone. We talk about how he got on at The Source, writing Ma$e's first cover story, buying photos from a young Lenny S and young Johnny Nunez, where he was when Suge Knight took the stage at the 1995 Source Awards, and choosing David Banner, Juelz Santana and most famously, Eminem, for the Unsigned Hype column. Riggs reminisces on his time as an A&R for Shady Records during their dominant years, putting together the 8 Mile soundtrack with Em and seeing what a genius mind 50 Cent is from the moment he signed. Riggs gets into how he decided to move on from Shady, how he hoped to grow as an executive, who he could rely on for advice in that time, why he chose to work at Atlantic, his contributions to projects with Wiz Khalifa, Travie McCoy and O.T. Genesis, and his dream of one day working with Phil Collins. We also break down how he closed the Hamilton Mixtape deal with Lin-Manuel Miranda, bringing Busta Rhymes to a preview of the play, how the experience has changed his life, the most important promise he made and kept with Lin, and what the upcoming feature film In The Heights means to a Washington Heights native like Riggs. All that, plus the lessons he learned from his parents, the heartfelt words HeadQCourterz left him with as they grew up, being early on Razor scooters, meeting George Lucas, the crazy list of artists he worked toward signing as an exec, and so much more! 14:41 AKAsEric aka Cancel PETA aka Dragging My MinkJeff aka Drop a Dime on You aka The Empire State Building Riggs aka Rigg Flair aka Riggy Smallz aka Rigg RossRiggs Morales speaks about: 15:22 His time at Shady Records during 50 Cent’s debut 21:19 Growing up in NYC 28:42 Finding himself and getting into journalism 1:02:16 Leaving The Source Magazine and becoming an A&R 1:23:44 Leaving Shady Records and heading to Atlantic Records 1:37:00 Working on Hamilton the Hip Hop Musical 1:50:53 Mac Miller, Alchemist, The Beatnuts/Big Pun video shoot, DJ Green Lantern, Johnny Nuñez See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This time, we sat down with the man, the myth, the legend, Mikaelin ‘Blue’ Bluespruce (@mixedbyblue). Blue is a Grammy Winning Engineer and record producer, a top respected name in the industry, and most importantly, a new father and a stand-up gentleman. Blue is a relatively reserved, calm dude, much like myself, but for the next 90 or so minutes we are going to take about how he is quietly making a dent in the music game with a nonstop work ethic. He has worked with prominent artists like Solange, Skepta, and those involved on the Hamilton Mixtape. Style-wise, Blue does not look like your typical engineer. This dude dresses fly as heck to show up to the studio with the tapered joggers, fade on point, sneaker game stupid, and that’s who he is. He brings his own brand to the beat beyond just the moves he makes in the studio. When Blue touches a track, you know it’s him, and he’s here to tell you how he developed his own unique aesthetic. In this episode, Blue discusses his early creative experiences with music, the routine that leads to greatness, the creative process with Solange, pulling all-nighters in NYU studios, the flow state of engineering, and more. Regina Spektor has been a favorite of the crew at TMBTG for years—as far back as 2004's Soviet Kitsch—and we're delighted to have had the iconic indie singer-songwriter call in to this week's episode of the show. The idiosyncratic genius infuses classical-esque flourishes into beguiling pop structures, matching grand scope with delicate intimacy. That depth has been utilized on soundtracks as wide-ranging as The Hamilton Mixtape to Kubo and the Two Strings, not to mention the theme for Orange Is the New Black. There’s something theatrical, surreal, and yet deeply emotionally resonant about her songwriting and fluttery voice, and now nearly two decades into a breathtaking career that spans so many different styles and sounds, she's making her debut on Broadway with a series of shows at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre beginning June 20. On this week's show, we chat with Regina about that amazing achievement, her surprising first concerts in Europe, opening for the Strokes, and so much more. We're kicking off season two with 2 episodes about the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical Hamilton. Featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Director Tommy Kail, Producers Jeffrey Seller & Oskar Eustis, Alex Lacamoire, David Korins, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, and more, these episodes will dazzle both the Hamilton super-fans and the casual ones as we find out how the show developed from a vacation beach read to a genre-bending international phenomenon.  Part 1 takes us all the way back to 2008 when Lin-Manuel Miranda picked up Ron Chernow's book for the first time and, as Lin says, heard hip hop songs rising off the pages. From there, Lin begins work on a concept album called The Hamilton Mixtape. After a fateful performance of the Mixtape, the wheels are set in motion to develop the album into an off-Broadway musical in partnership with The Public Theater. As the off-Broadway production approached opening night, the creative team knew the work was good, but as The Public Theater's Oskar Eustis says, anybody who says they knew what Hamilton would become is lying.   Download the TodayTix app in googleplay or the app store or visit todaytix.com to see what's playing this month and treat yourself to a show. Isaiah (Hamilton, The Color Purple) plays George Washington on our tour and was a part of the show during its infancy stages when it was The Hamilton Mixtape.  He comes a long way from Broadway (Anchorage, Alaska) and his route to get to where he is makes for quite the tale. Isaiah has a passionate stance on the role of the actor in society and a wonderful sense of humor. Rory and Isaiah also solve the mystery of the shaking stool. You'll have to listen to understand that one!

In our penultimate “fuck this year” episode, all of our hosts return!  Except the other chick “Welcome to the jungle, we got fun and games - we got volcanoes exploding.. right in your face.”  The Hamilton Mixtape is now available on Spotify! (Or for purchase if you’re 1000 years old).  The Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) has been struck down for now, but what will happen under a Trump Presidency?  Amazon Go is here to scan your phone for all those dick pics. “Put the Magnums down, Jonathan, the Lifestyles are right in front of you.”  Afraid President Pussy Grabber Elect might lose access to his Twitter? Never fear - technology is being expanded so POTUS can use the cellular emergency alert system to let us know what else he thinks is overrated, sad, or bad.  Trump the Distractor: Laura explains why the GOP has warmed to Trump, and why all of his gaffes and faux pas are intended to distract us.  Meanwhile, Senator Turtle McTurtleton of the Galapagos is threatening to scrap the filibuster if Democrats try to obstruct GOP SCOTUS nominations.  Texas is now legally allowed to force aborted fetus burials.  Foreign diplomats are staying at Trump hotels in droves because that’s not a conflict of interest.  Andrew does another check in on the savings habits of millennials and we still don’t have any. Are you gonna eat that ramen? Surprise, Bitch! brings us to the UK, where Phoebe commiserates with three yanks about the bucket of suck that is watching an alt-reich takeover.  Dictionary.com chooses an actual word for this year’s “Word of the Year,” and it’s more evidence that the US needs to take some time to be alone and try to find itself.  And this week’s After Dark is available to all $2 Patrons, so don’t miss out on our discussion of Uncle Joe’s remarks about running for President in 2020!  Would Joe Biden have won against Trump this year?  We invent a series of mostly stupid, somewhat fucked up campaign slogans for Joe.  Asking the important questions: Can he beat Kanye?

Definitely explicit language in this one. Last week was a hard one and we needed to vent some. Of course we discuss the election, so if that's been too stressful for you, please skip most of the first segment (go to about 14:50) But other than that! We talk about SNL, have some long anime talks, talk about Pacific Rim, and the Hamilton Mixtape. We managed to pull some fun into this one, and there's great music as always!

Dave and Pat return to discuss Johnny Depp's polarizing casting in 'Fantastic Beasts', Rami Malek's ability to portray Freddie Mercury, Stranger Things Season 2, and the surprising return of Young Justice. We discuss Quentin Tarantino confirming he has 2 films left and offer conflicting takes on The Hamilton Mixtape. We then review the first season of Atlanta by sharing our favorite moments, what makes the show special, and why it's the best show of the fall. We also ponder if FX is the best network on TV.

Aw yeah, we're back from vacation. Recorded this past Sunday. We definitely had a good time, laughed and joked, and got a bit...ridiculous and personal. But, DC Movies seem to be getting out of their slump, comics are still weird, Dom's Phone Saga seems to be coming to an end, and representation is staying strong. Good news, right?

This week we’re feeling The Crown (4:35), American Honey (14:20), and Moonlight (25:25). We then discuss the tracklist announcement of the Hamilton Mixtape (33:25) and our feelings about Marvel’s latest addition the the MCU, Doctor Strange (44:30). Sidenote: It feels very strange to post this episode the day after last night’s election. I debated whether or not it was appropriate. It might not be. My thinking is that for whoever might be expecting it to get posted today and is looking forward to it as a distraction, I want to uphold our schedule. I also want to acknowledge that this conversation feels out of place in today’s atmosphere. The three of us are grieving today and even though we are publishing this previously recorded discussion today, please know that it is not reflective of our current moods.
