"Listen my children, and you shall hear, of the midnight ride of Paul Revere."  With this one line, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ensured the legacy of 18th-century Boston silversmith, mechanic and entrepreneur, Paul Revere.  The poem, published in January of 1861 in the Atlantic Monthly magazine was simply entitled "Paul Revere's Ride," and purports to detail the ride of Paul Revere to warn Middlesex county farmers and minute men about the approach of Regular Army soldiers to capture a cache of weapons and supplies hidden in Concord, Massachusetts.  However, that dramatic ride was just one of dozens of rides that Paul Revere was hired to do on behalf of the people of Massachusetts.  Join Professor Bob Allison in conversation with Tegan Kehoe, the Research and Adult Programs Director of the historic Paul Revere House on the many rides of Paul Revere.https://www.paulreverehouse.org/Tell us what you think! In this episode we speak to Brigadier Jaish Mahan, who commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) in 1994 and has served in roles spanning the medical profession. He has deployed on seven operational tours, including Kosovo, Sierra Leone, the Iraq war and Afghanistan three times. Brigadier Mahan has been an Army Reservist since his transition from the Regular Army in 2016, and was Deputy Commander (Reserves) 7th Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team, before taking up his current position as Deputy Commander (Reserves) 1st UK Division.    Drawing from his experiences, Brigadier Mahan emphasised the importance of consistent and stable values and highlighted integrity as the pre-eminent one, due to the importance of creating trust between leaders and their teams. He also comments on how a leadership intervention can be pivotal in altering the dynamic of a team and the situation, and how establishing relationships with teams wider than your own, early on, can increase support later. He acknowledges the power of facilitating cognitive diversity in teams, allowing individuals and teams to find their own way using empowered delegation - a concept that the British Army recognises as Mission Command.

Ron and his dog were later assigned to a Special Forces team performing combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The team was transported and protected by superbly skilled and battle-hardened Army helicopter crews. Ron was impressed by the skill and coolness of these pilots, and he had no idea that he would later join that elite group of aviators and lead other helicopter pilots into battle.

Threads In our Fabric: Buffalo Soldier

Moments of Grace

The Buffalo Soldiers were United States Army regiments that primarily comprised African Americans, formed during the 19th century to serve on the American frontier. In 1866, through an act of Congress, legislation was adopted to create six all African-American Army units. On September 21, 1866, the 10th Cavalry Regiment was formed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" was purportedly given to the regiment by Native Americans who fought against them in the American Indian Wars, and the term eventually became synonymous with all of the African American U.S. Army regiments established in 1866, including the 9th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Regiment and 38th Infantry Regiment.  The recruits came from varied backgrounds including former slaves and veterans from service in the Civil War. During the Civil War, the U.S. government formed regiments known as the United States Colored Troops, composed of black soldiers and Native Americans. The USCT was disbanded in the fall of 1865. In 1867 the Regular Army was set at ten regiments of cavalry and 45 regiments of infantry. The Army was authorized to raise two regiments of black cavalry (the 9th and 10th (Colored) Cavalry) and four regiments of black infantry (the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st (Colored) Infantry), who were mostly drawn from USCT veterans. The first draft of the bill that the House Committee on Military Affairs sent to the full chamber on March 7, 1866, did not include a provision for regiments of black cavalry, however, this provision was added by Senator Benjamin Wade prior to the bill's passing on July 28, 1866. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Buffalo Soldiers were assigned to the harshest and most desolate posts. Specific duties included subduing Mexican revolutionaries, outlaws, rustlers and warring Native Americans. Additional administrative duties included exploring and mapping the Southwest and establishing outposts for future towns. During the Indian Wars from 1866 to 1891, 416 soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor. Although the Buffalo Soldiers were 12% of the U.S. Army infantry force and 20% of the cavalry force in this era, Buffalo Soldiers were awarded less than 4% of all Medals of Honor awarded. Other regiments during the era received a greater number of Medals of Honor but were not distinguished enough to see duty in Cuba for the Spanish–American War. For example, the 8th Cavalry Regiment with 84 Medals of Honor, were not assigned duty to fight in Cuba in 1898. Scholars have hypothesized that commanders were reticent to award behavior that they expected from soldiers, the bureaucracy impeded awards, and the posting of black soldiers to remote outposts reduced the visibility of black soldiers (the 1st Cavalry participated in twenty-one campaigns and the 2nd cavalry participated in nineteen campaigns during this era, compared to the 9th Cavalry's eight campaigns). Historian Thomas Philips counted 2,704 engagements with native tribes during this era, of which the four black regiments participated in 141 or about 4%.  Despite the barriers imposed by the social climate of their day, the Buffalo Soldiers performed with grace and dignity in every conflict. Their resilience embodies the uncanny determination to overcome any opticals dispatched on the battlefield or from the nation they fought for. We honor the American spirit and true patriotism of the Buffalo Soldiers, who are threads in the spirit of freedom in the fabric of America. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/momentsofgrace/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/momentsofgrace/support

Here is Dr. Fuller's Bio from his website https://theoldgrayman.com My name is T.C. Fuller. I am originally from California. I grew up in some occasionally rough places, in a shattered family, and was out on my own at 16. I put myself through prep school and college, got a degree and a Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, then headed off into the world. After my initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia, with all the “usual” infantry officer schools, I was off to the races. Over the next decade, I served in a variety of jobs. Most notably, I was an mechanized infantry platoon leader in the First Gulf War, then an Explosive Ordnance Disposal company commander twice, first in the Sinai Desert, Egypt as part of the Multinational Force and Observers, then at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After that, I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I served in various capacities in the FBI, working just about every investigative area in the Bureau's jurisdiction at one time or another during my 20 year career. Lots of street level criminal investigations, several years of counter-terrorism investigations, and even the occasional counter-intelligence case. There were other jobs in the FBI as well, including interrogator in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, time doing all kinds of stuff in Afghanistan, Firearms Instructor (both in the field and at the FBI Academy), Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Congressional Liaison up on Capitol Hill. In my spare time, I added a Master's of Education and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, as well as publishing a book under a nom de plume. Once I retired, I opened my own firm, doing private investigations, executive protection, and consulting (www.thehorusgroup.net). I have lived and worked in all kinds of places, doing all kinds of things. Importantly, that includes living and working across the U.S. and overseas, including war zones. And I have survived this long not only based on luck, but by being a Gray Man. By passing unnoticed when possible, seeing trouble before it sees me and leaving, escaping trouble when it finds me despite my best efforts, and, when all else has failed, by forcing the issue in my favor.I know what has worked for me, what has allowed me to survive long enough to earn my gray, to become an Old Gray Man. But that's not all, the general's aide is determined to make it seem the general died in blazing glory, fighting on the battlefield- except he can't find any fighting…in a war. In the early 1900's when tourism started to explode in Florida there were more people witnessing native Americans jumping in the water and catching alligators. Spectators called this alligator wrestling. It is a barehanded capture technique developed by the Native American people as well as other handlers to bring an alligator back home alive. You always wanted to bring the alligator back alive because the meat would spoil very quickly in the Florida Sun. As time went on spectators would pay to see native Americans handle alligators and learn more about the culture. This became one of the 1st forms of revenue for the native people in Florida. The name alligator wrestling is a name that has always stuck, it draws people in from all over the country to observe. The alligators in the demonstrations you see are ALL RESCUED alligators that will be able to live out the rest of their lives in a sanctuary instead of being put down.  Battle Reenactment 3 pm Lawn Chairs welcome        Terry Smith, local artist, will be doing a demonstration in the Lockey Room, in the main Building, during the Saturday event. In 1835, with the Federal Government tasked the U.S. Army to forcibly remove the Seminole from the Florida Territory, militia from Florida and volunteers from the several states, aided the regular Army in carrying out this controversial task. In this episode we will assess how the militia, volunteers, and regular Army performed.  Jesse Marshall returns to talk with us about the militia and the regular Army in the Second Seminole War. Self-titled ‘Polar Preet Chandi' is nothing short of extraordinary.   A passion and expertise for tennis at an early age saw Preet move to the Czech Republic to attend Novak's Tennis Academy when she was just 16.  A career in the Army Reserves and a degree in physiotherapy followed; but as her appetite for pushing and challenging herself grew, Preet went on to complete her first half marathon at 20 years old.   From there she progressed on to compete in ultra-marathons, and eventually joined the Regular Army in her late twenties, completing large scale exercises and deployments in places such as Nepal, Kenya and most recently a 6 month UN peacekeeping tour to South Sudan.   Currently based at a Medical Regiment in the North West of England, with a primary role as a Clinical Training Officer, Preet recently completed her MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary's University, but might have to wait to attend her graduation ceremony… Forever interested in ways in which to push the human body to its limits, Preet will very shortly be arriving in Chile to undertake her biggest challenge to date – being the first woman of colour to complete a solo, unsupported trek to the South Pole, travelling over 700 miles, facing wind speeds of 60mph and temperatures as low as -50c, before returning home with the intention of launching her own adventure grant for women.   Captain Preet Chandi was shortlisted for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards in the Sport category in 2020. When the US entered World War I, Douglas MacArthur was a major attached to the US Army General Staff. About 14 months later, he was a brigadier general. Prior to the war's conclusion in November 1918, he was on the verge of a promotion to major general. Wartime promotions in the National Army raised many career officers like MacArthur, George Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and George Patton several grades. After the war though, these officers typically reverted back to their pre-war rank in the Regular Army. MacArthur was an exception. He would spend the next several decades as a general officer. Jim Zobel and Amanda Williams of the MacArthur Memorial recently sat down together to discuss circumstances behind these World War I promotions - and whether or not they were warranted or influenced by family connections.

James January  was burned September 1991. He was Branched but not Commissioned, Regular Army, Military Intelligence...a fancy way of saying that he got burned his senior year of college. At age 21, everything he worked for went up in smoke when the vehicle he was driving had some issues, to put it mildly. At one point the braking did not work properly, swerving out of its lane & rather than hit the oncoming car, taking out the family inside, he steered the truck right when it wanted to go left. He remembers reaching through flames to undo the seatbelt as the truck was skidding on its side. The other guy got out quick, it exploded on him before he was able to climb out the passenger side window. He was burned 85-90% most of it full thickness burns every where except where he was wearing shorts and shoes. After a period of struggle, due to both his injuries and a search for something that would challenge him, in the mid 1990's he became involved with the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, specifically its education, prevention and post burn programs. He has immersed himself in anything that deals with burn survivors and their family and friends, anyone who works with burn survivors, and the prevention of burn injury ever since. He believes any program designed to work beyond the hospital doors...anything dealing with the prevention of burn injury, life beyond a burn injury, or getting the patient from living to thriving in spite of a burn injury...functions best with a well trained, highly motivated burn survivor as part of the team. From such foundation, has sprung BurnSurvivor.org"A sot of burn trauma think tank if you will. We work with burn survivors, their family and friends. We work with those who work with burn survivors. We work to prevent burns. We seek to become a resource and networking center for burn survivors, burn care professionals, firefighters, family and friends. Encourage the development of programs that go beyond the operating room. Recruit and train burn survivors to be part of the burn team. Wild West Podcast

This is the story of Moses Embree Milner, one man's life on the frontier as an Indian Scout. By the late 1860s the Army had been involved in the Indians Wars for 20 years and because of the vast, challenging land to the west, the Army needed more manpower. To offset the vastness of the territory the Army employed Indian Scouts to performed reconnaissance and combat duties. These scouts helped to subdue the last warring tribes.  There were several types of scouts: those who enlisted as Indian Scouts for brief terms and those hired as scouts by the U.S. Army. Sometimes an individual may have served at different times as a hired scout and an enlisted scout, but never at the same time. In addition to enlisted and hired scouts, some scouts not of native American descent served in Regular Army infantry and cavalry regiments in short-lived Indian campaigns in the 1800s. To read more about early frontier history you can purchase the book Trail, Forts, Treaties and Indian Wars at Amazon.

Throughout her 10 year career in the Regular Army, she had the opportunity to deploy to Afghanistan and take part in expeditions around the world - enjoying all the opportunities for adventure and travel that a military career offers. In 2007, Heather married a fellow serving officer and when their family grew, the pressures of bringing up a young family meant that in 2014 she took the difficult decision to leave. Heather now saw life on the other side of the fence and found it much tougher. Her eyes were opened to the incredible sacrifices made by those that hold the fort at home and she really wanted to give something back by providing opportunities for this community to have a taste of the exciting adventures, teamwork and sense of belonging she had enjoyed in the military. And so the Forces Wives Challenge (FWC) was born, seeking to unite women with partners in the military through adventure and challenge.Since its creation in 2018, FWC has completed a number of exciting adventures from the flagship expedition to Chile where they climbed the highest volcano in the world, to the iconic Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the National 3 Peaks and Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons. FWC is growing rapidly with over the 600 members nationally and their events having raised over £30,000 for charity! We hope you enjoy the episode.

In today's conversation we dive into Karen's powerful personal story about how she saved her daughter's life from organophosphate (household pesticide) poisoning by researching, studying and implementing her own program to save her little girl's life. Choosing to employ the alternative method of nutrition, she began to administer a plan for healing using the knowledge she had gained through her research. Much to the amazement of the doctors, her daughter began to improve. Within six weeks, her daughter had made such improvement that there were no more measurable signs of distress. The only question remained if any permanent neural damage would be manifest as she grew older. Her daughter is now 31 years old, with no signs of permanent neural damage or any other damage. We also discuss beans (and how they help remove toxins from the body), fiber, the "s" word SUGAR, hormones, and so much more. You will not want to miss this very moving and powerful episode. Karen is a graduate of the American Academy of Nutrition (now called Huntington College of Health Sciences) and completed her coursework in Comprehensive Nutrition. On screen, someone is manipulating someone into playing a football game, but we are as confused as Duke about exactly what’s happening. We continue trying to read the room as Hammond joins Henry in his office and inches closer to our sports spectacle while playing with a model helicopter and ignoring Blake’s speech.

SUPPORT THIS PODCAST!Army Women’s Tennis Coach, Paul Peck took an unconventional path to arrive at his current profession. As a young man, growing up in Chicago, he excelled at many sports before finally settling on tennis and playing in high school and college. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he entered the work force. Failing to find fulfillment working a 9-5 job, he enlisted in the Army and contracted for Officer Candidate School as a means of paying off his college debt and guaranteeing a Master’s Degree. His first duty assignment was Germany, where he was assigned to an 8 inch Artillery Battery. He trained to fight the Soviets and witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall. Upon returning to the United States he was again assigned to the last Regular Army 8 inch self-propelled howitzer unit. The day after he was promoted to Captain, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and his unit immediately made preparations to deploy. A month after he made Captain, he was placed in command of an artillery battery and was enroute to the Persian Gulf. Before the conventional ground war started, he participated in artillery raids. Once the ground war started, his battery followed the advance and provided support to the rapidly advancing coalition forces. After returning from the war, he applied to teach in the Department of Physical Education at West Point and received his Masters from the University of Illinois. While teaching in DPE, he returned to the sport he loved, and helped out as an Officer Representative and an Assistant Coach on the Women’s Tennis Team. Coach Peck was a perfect fit for the Women’s Tennis Program, and shortly after pinning on Major’s rank, he resigned from the Army and accepted a civilian job as the Women’s Tennis Head Coach. He has been coaching at West Point since 1995. In 2012, he received the Mike Krzyzewski Teaching Character Through Sport Award.Dave SwansonWebsiteBook Goat Wrestling Perseverance Clothes Free Chapter of my Bestselling Book? To gain a better understanding of what life in the military was like for your ancestors, it is essential to know in what capacity someone may have served. Did your ancestor serve in the regulars, or was he a volunteer soldier, or did he have service with the local militia? These terms are generally associated with the records of the United States Army. The other branches enlisted men using different terminology. Free download: by Trevor K. Plante (Reference Information Paper 109) for National Archives reference materials for military acronyms, abbreviations, and dictionaries that will aid genealogists when researching how exactly their ancestors served : One of the best examples of how colonial militias operated (laws, rules, and regulations, and parent organizations). Pennsylvania followed very closely the doings of other colonies during the same period. Samuel Howard in the Civil War Because of his age he wasn't able to enlist until 1865 when he turned 18. He was a volunteer soldier who served as a substitute for another man who was drafted. After his discharge, he again enlisted in the Regular Army in 1866. He was assigned to the 13th U.S. Infantry, where he served one month before deserting at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Samuel was married in 1867 (this may have some relevance to his decision to leave the military). He lived in Pennsylvania from the end of the war until his death in 1913. Shown here in 1876, Lebanon, PA. Both his Regular and Volunteer Army enlistment forms are included here, along with the above photograph of Samuel with his wife circa 1876 from an early tintype. The forms look very similar, as each contains common information asked of a typical recruit. However they are decidedly different as the one covers his Civil War service and the other his post war service when he joined the regular Army after the men who served during the war would have been discharged.   GEM: AN INSPIRING FAMILY HISTORY VIDEO   based on poem by Tom Boyer Learn more about the Where I'm From poetry project and hear a conversation with the original author, Kentucky poet laureate George Ella Lyon in the free . Hannah's Animoto Advice: You'll find when using the video templates, timing the photos to the narration can pose some challenges. Originally, when she put the photos in place and “previewed” the video, the narration didn't line up at all with the images. Hannah explains: “When I was in “creator” mode, I selected a picture that I wanted to appear on the screen for a longer duration then I clicked the “spotlight” button that is on the left-hand side in the editor column. Or If you double click the image, it will open into a larger single view and you can select the “star” button which will do the same thing. I applied this spotlight option to several photos within my gallery. I knew which photos to do this to by previewing the video several times to make sure I liked the timing of it all. Now if your problem is not with just a few photos but the overall timing, then try editing the pace of your photos.  In the top right-hand corner, click the “edit song/trim and pacing” button. Here you can trim you uploaded mp3 audio as well as the pace to which your photos appear. My photos appeared too fast on the screen in comparison to the narration I had, so I moved the pace button to left by one notch and previewed the video. This did the trick and the result was a heart-warming poem, turned into a visually beautiful story.” Do you have a darn good reason to take action right now to get your family history in front of your family? Perhaps: a video of the loving couples in your family tree for Valentine's Day a video of your family's traditional Easter Egg hunt through the years a tribute to the mom's young and old in your family on Mother's Day your child's or grandchild's graduation a video to promote your upcoming family reunion to get folks really visualizing the fun they are going to have Or perhaps it's the story of a genealogy journey you've been on where you finally busted a brick wall and retrieved an ancestor's memory from being lost forever. 5 Steps to Jump-Starting Your Video Project Pick one family history topic Write the topic in one brief sentence – the title of your video Select 12 photos that represent that topic. On a piece of paper, number it 1 – 12 and write one brief sentence about each photo that convey your message. You don't have to have one for every photo, but it doesn't hurt to try. Scan the photos if they aren't already and save them to one folder on your hard drive. And now you are in great shape to take the next step and get your video made in a way that suits your interest, skill, and time. 4 Easy Methods for Creating Video Got an iPhone? iOS 10 now has “Memories” a feature of your Photos app that can instantly create a video of a group of related photos. There's the free Adobe Spark Video app which can you can add photos, video clips and text to, pick a theme and a music track from their collection, and whip up something pretty impressive in a very short time. Visit your device's app store or There's which does everything that Spark does, but gives you even more control over the content, and most importantly the ability to download your video in HD quality. You can even add a button to the end that the viewer can tap and it will take them to a website, like your genealogy society website, a Facebook group for your family reunion or even a document on FamilySearch. And finally, if you have the idea, and pull together the photos, you can book Hannah at Genealogy Gems to create a video with your content. Go to and scroll to the Contact form at the bottom of the home page to request ordering information. The most important thing is that your family history can be treasured and shared so that it brings joy to your life today, and also, to future generations. The thing is, if your kids and grandkids can see the value of your genealogy research, they will be more motivated to preserve and protect it.   PREMIUM INTERVIEW: SYLVIA BROWN In , publishing later this month, Sylvia Brown (of the family connected to Brown University) will join Lisa Louise Cooke to talk about researching her new book, , which traces her family's involvement in philanthropy, Rhode Island history and the institution of slavery hundreds of years. From the American Revolution to the present day, African Americans have stepped forward in their nation’s defense. Fighting for Uncle Sam: Buffalo Solders in the Frontier Army (Schiffer, 2016) breathes new vitality into a stirring subject, emphasizing the role men who have come to be known as “buffalo soldiers” played in opening the Trans-Mississippi West. This concise overview reveals a cast of characters as big as the land they served. Over 150 images painstakingly gathered nearly a half century from public and private collections enhance the written word as windows to the past. Now 150 years after Congress authorized blacks to serve in the Regular Army, the reader literally can peer into the eyes of formerly enslaved men who bravely bought their freedom on the bloody battlefields of the Civil War, then trekked westward, carried the “Stars and Stripes” to the Caribbean, and pursued Pancho Villa into Mexico with John “Black Jack” Pershing. Growing up in Tucson, Arizona, historian and author John P. Langellier spent four decades working in public history after earning a B.A. and M.A. in history from the University of San Diego and his Ph.D. in military history from Kansas State University. He spent a dozen years with the U.S. Army, helped found California’s Autry Museum of the American West, and served as director for Wyoming State Museum, deputy director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, executive director of Arizona’s Sharlot Hall Museum, and director of Arizona Historical Society’s Central Division. He was also awarded an honorary membership into the 9th and 10th U.S. Horse Calvary Association. He has written dozens of published books, served as a Hollywood film consultant, a Smithsonian Institution fellow, and produced history documentaries for television networks A&E, History, and PBS. Langellier officially “retired” to Tucson in 2015, but still continues his work as one of the preeminent military historians in the United States.
