The Comanche peaked and then fell in the decades between 1840 and 1880. In this episode, we discuss that story arc. From the Comanche retaliation against Texas for the Council House Massacre, through a brief peace with the Texans, drought and declining bison herds, collapsing population, and finally to the back-and-forth relations with the US that culminated in the reservation period. In the middle of this story, Quanah Parker emerges as a great Comanche warrior who would then, in an unexpected pivot, urge assimilation as the last, best hope for his people. What if Columbus committed to becoming the largest US city to completely eliminate homelessness? How much would it cost? What specifically would we do with the money? As Columbus works to hone a distinctive identity that differentiates it from other American cities, could its unique quality be that no one in Ohio's capital city lacked a place to call home? We'll soon know more about the current scope of homelessness in our neighborhoods: every year, a “Point-in-Time Count” of Columbus' homeless population occurs on a single day in January. The next count will be held on January 25, 2024. In January 2023, Community Shelter Board's (CSB) count revealed the single largest increase and an all-time high in the number of people experiencing homelessness at a single point in time in Columbus and Franklin County. That count revealed an overall 22% increase of those who were experiencing homelessness in our community, and that 71% of the people were Black or African American (compared to being 29% of the general population). According to the CSB, this inequality is the result of discriminatory “redlining” lending practices, restrictive covenants, structural racism, classism, and gender injustice. Predictions by a national research firm, Focus Strategies, show the housing availability crisis Columbus is experiencing locally will drive a decline in program outcomes and increase entries into homelessness, with those earning 30% or less of the area's median income being the most vulnerable population. With an expert panel we dive into homelessness in Columbus and ask the big question: what it would take to end homelessness in Central Ohio once and for all? Featuring Shannon Isom, President & CEO, Community Shelter Board, Sheli Mathias, Director, The Open Shelter, Bob Weiler, Chairman of the Board, The Robert Weiler Company, and Letha Pugh, Co-Founder, Bake Me Happy, with host Ann Bischoff, CEO, Star House. This forum was sponsored by The American Electric Power Foundation, Bath & Body Works, The Ohio State University, and The Community Shelter Board. The forum was supported by The Ellis and by The Columbus Dispatch. The livestream was presented by The Center for Human Kindness at The Columbus Foundation and The Columbus Dispatch. This forum was recorded before a live audience at The Ellis in Columbus, Ohio's historic Italian Village on January 10, 2024.

Florence Ashley & Sam Sanchinel, “The Saint of Christopher Street: Marsha P. Johnson and the Social Life of a Heroine” (2023) 134 Feminist Review 39–55 Abstract: This article analyses the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson as a heroine through the notion of labour, emphasising how heroine narratives are both a product of labour as well as a form of labour. After offering a short account of Marsha P. Johnson's role in the Stonewall riots and STAR, we explore the development of trans communities' ability to create, sustain and disseminate heroine narratives, emphasising Tourmaline's pivotal archival role in establishing Johnson's legacy. Then, we elucidate the role of heroine narratives in creating and sustaining a collective identity. We argue that community attachment to Marsha P. Johnson reclaims the place of trans communities in LGBTQ+ history but is often done in a manner that obscures the whiteness of mainstream trans advocacy. We suggest that the recent increase in interest towards the life-sustaining labour of STAR House reflects the evolution of trans collective identity in the post-visibility era. (Link to article)

Episode 12 of the famed…okay infamous Atlanta Grubber podcast. I get ITP and, in some cases, barely OTP, so not just AlphaRozCreek by any means on this broadcast. We talk about Il Giallo, a smidgen outside of 285 on Roswell Road. It's home to my wife's favorite item favorite of said item. I was also able to corroborate several other top shelf restaurants I've been hearing a lot about. Nur Kitchen, holy heck, yes everything you heard is true. It's great. What to get? Listen? Pretty much every person I know who has been to the Po'Boy Shop in Decatur says they have the best Nawlins sandwiches. Put me on that bandwagon! Casa Robles from one of my favorite restauranteurs is another winner from Ryan Pernice. Maybe my two favorite meatballs are discussed on this episode including from here! On the Beltline, I may have brought on the Armageddon with what I ordered at Rina's Kitchen. The newest “hidden gem” La Fondita puts out great food at the former home of a no-longer-hidden one! Favorite items in town? My wife and I each may have found one or more at Brooklyn Café. The best banh mi is at the Asian Square on Buford Highway at Quôc Húóng. It's a dog day afternoon: today's episode profiles the bank robber John Wojtowicz, who infamously (and as memorialized in Sidney Lumet's 1975 film DOG DAY AFTERNOON) held up a bank in 1972 to pay for gender-affirming surgery for Elizabeth Eden, his trans girlfriend. Or did he? We take a look, using the story to think through 1972 as a fault line for emerging attitudes about homosexuality and trans femininity, Wojtowicz' surprising involvement in early gay liberation activism in New York City, the DOG DAY AFTERNOON phenomenon and what it says about growing distinctions between gay men and trans women and how they were represented and compensated, and the ethical complications of Wojtowicz as a figure in history and in historical memory. ----more---- SOURCES Check out trans historian Zagria's three part series on Eden and Wojtowicz, with links to some fantastic digitized primary sources at the end: Zagria, "Liz Eden and Dog Day Afternoon,” (three-part series), Gender Variance Who's Who. - https://zagria.blogspot.com/2020/08/liz-eden-and-dog-day-afternoon-part-i.html - https://zagria.blogspot.com/2020/08/liz-eden-and-dog-day-afternoon-part-ii.html - https://zagria.blogspot.com/2020/08/liz-eden-and-dog-day-afternoon-part-iii.html Check out Morgan M. Wayne Gipson is the current owner of the Quanah Parker Star House which now sits next to Eagle Park, an amusement park Wayne's family owned and operated from 1957 to 1985. The Gipson family built the park from scratch one ride at a time; his uncle gave his entire life to building the park and collecting the buildings which sit on the property- including the Star House. Wayne's first job in the park, at 6 years old, was to operate the mini golf course. In our conversation Wayne explains how his uncle acquired the Star House from Linda Parker Birdsong, Quanah Parker's daughter in 1957. When Wayne's uncle, Herbert Woesner, passed away in 2008 he passed the house down to Wayne and his sister. Since 2008, the Comanche Nation have made attempts to purchase the house from Wayne who has remained resistant. This story of the Star House dating back to 1890 is a fascinating story- Quanah Parker, the Commanche chief, demanded the US Government build it for him in 1890 on Fort Sill when he surrendered to them. Now in 2021, the Gipson family who acquired the house in a trade from Quanah's daughter have owned the house for 64 years, nearly as long than the Parker family owned the house. To this day the house continues to fall apart rapidly, mostly due to the roof being severely damaged. Negotiations between Wayne and the Comanche Nation are stagnant and it's clear in talking to Wayne how deeply he cares for this house, the park, and the restaurant which he now operates daily at the top of the hill up the road from the house. He wants to repair the house and revive the story but has no money and no time to pour into this project which he estimates may cost around 1 million dollars at this point. His apprehensiveness in selling the house to the Comanche Nation stems from the unknown of where he and his family will stand when things shake out. The house and the park is at the core of his DNA- his lifelong dream was to operate Eagle Park and continue sharing the story of Quanah Parker and his Star House. Every year that goes by without a solution is detrimental to the house and the story. I will be following up with Wayne on the story. I hope he can come to an agreement, find a solution that works for his family and the Comanche Nation, and that the house can be restored.

This is Lone Star House of Design, a podcast about all things design and architecture from and about the Great State of Texas. This episode features Melissa Gerstle, an artist of outdoor spaces. She crafts, teases and manipulates organic matter and design product into highly unique and crafted spaces. Texas is not always the best canvas for such things. At times, the weather doesn't really cooperate. You are going to hear how this artisan uses the inhospitable to craft incredible outdoor design. The old saying about the value of property are true, “location, location, location” and Mark Twain's, “Buy land, they are making it anymore.” Design and use of outdoor space is the equivalent to being given more land. By making the most out of every square yard, the value of the property is not only increases but the service value of the property is tapped to increase the ‘joy-per-foot' ratio. A designer that can tap into the value of previously unactivated spaces is rare and we have one here. Finally, episode 9 of the never-won-an-award podcast the Atlanta Grubber. I get all over town. In my backyard, I talk about From the Earth, which is a great restaurant, brewery, hangout, and now concert venue! Once a Decatur restaurant, now in Alpharetta, Madras Chettinaad is flat out one of the premier dining destinations in the area. I give you an early scouting report on Chattahoochee Food Works, from Andrew Zimmerman, which appears to be well on its way to being the top food hall in the metro area. TydeTate Kitchen was where my maiden voyage was. But I have tried some previous locations of forthcoming purveyors and I tell you which ones I'm looking forward to. We finally have a good restaurant at Mansell Road and North Point Parkway. The drought ends with Passador Steak House. Two stud chefs Richard Ullio and Mike Di Paolo opened one of the best restaurants in Dunwoody, Novo Cucina. Near Halcyon in Forsyth Country are two good places, Heidi's Heavenly Cookies featured on national TV shows and publications, plus Jay's Mexican Grill, which boasts they are, “Definitely not Tex-Mex.” I ask you to visit the preferred charity of the Atlanta Grubber, the STAR House, which does splendid work with at-risk children, leveling the playing field and helping them get a great education. This is Lone Star House of Design, a podcast about all things design and architecture form the Great State of Texas with a panel conversation featuring some of the biggest names in American design today, and all from Texas. The following conversation is part of the Wellness and Design Leadership Series presented by ThermaSol and you are not going to want to miss a moment of this one featuring a panel of design icons, all from Texas. This is a conversation with Kyle Bunting & friends.I met Kyle Bunting through my friend and amazing publicist, Andrew Joseph. He reintroduced me to Kyle with whom my last contact was not direct but through designer Christopher Kennedy who designed my Small Space, Big Style design house which featured a stunning Kyle Bunting rug. Kyle Bunting is producing some of the most stunning rugs in the world, all from his studio in Austin, Texas. The work is groundbreaking and has turned the Hyde rug, the original luxury item into an art form, unrivaled and completely original. After my conversation with Kyle, he said, “let’s do something really cool” and invited three incredible guests to join for a group chat about the state of design in Texas. This group included; Fern Santini - Santini’s work is completely original, it’s bold and refined with a wild streak that is unmistakeable and wonderful. Fern’s use of furniture, color and materials blends design into a hand crafted sculpture of space, materials and light. Lauren Rottet - Rottet is the complete designer. Architect, interior designer, furniture designer and art curator. Founding principal and president of Rottet Studio. I could list her accolades, but there would be no time left for the conversation.Jan Showers - Showers is another world-class designer from Texas, and I don’t use this term lightly, at all. Her work is elegant, unique and layered, like an Impasto at times, glazing others. Her spaces art artfully placed and painted to create a multi-dimensional environment. That, to me has always been the true essence of design. Some idea came up during our conversation that bears repeating here. Texas design is very different by geography. Austin is funky and weird, yet still a college town and state capitol. The spirit of Austin is strong and diverse base on the the influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kinky Friedman, Michael Dell, Tito Beveridge combined with some of the most interesting architecture you can find around the state capitol and the University of Texas campus. It’s still a relatively small city but it doesn’t feel that way. The addition of a technology hub to the already vibrant music scene and South By South West, Austin is poised for even greater heights but at what price? The traffic, cost of living, loss of architecturally significant structures to make way for more livable space? Yeah, that’s probably coming. Having spent 9 years living in Dallas, I can tell you that this city is rich in arts and cultural experiences. If you ask many outside of Texas, they will tell you about Tom Landry, J.R Ewing and Roger Staubach. Sure, Dallas is a world-class sports town, I get it. But the arts and culture scene in Dallas goes far beyond what you hear about Dallas on ESPN. The City Hall building in Dallas, designed by I.M Pei and Theodore J. Musho is a brutalist statement piece. Pei also designed the Meyerson Symphony Center and with that, added a simply exquisite and acoustic masterpiece to the “Metroplex”. Fair Park, home of the State Fair of Texas is an Art Deco oasis crafted by architect, George Dahl. There is far more to explore, and I encourage you to do just that! So what about Houston? Oil energy money, right? Sure. There is a significant link between oil barons and the arts, it’s true. Try to find an American city that was built on energy money that does not hav significant art, architecture and design. Houston is no different. The city has incredible art installations, a museum district, architectural representations of almost any era you...

It's Episode 6 of the Atlanta Grubber. Years ago, some of the best barbecue was in Cumming at Pappy Red's. Atlanta barbecue has advanced light years since then. But Cumming has one of the top choices in the south, Sock's Love Barbecue. Sock's has gotten deserved press, so no longer a “hidden gem” just a gem. Sandy Springs/Dunwoody almost in Brookhaven has Buon Fornello, featuring homemade pasta. Pick your own pasta, protein (or in my case proteins), sauce. Love Bolognese sauce? If you haven't been here, you must drop what you are doing and go now. Downtown Norcross has some of the best Cuban food and without question one of their best Cuban sandwich at Mojito's Cuban-American Bistro. Atlanta has a lot of good Chinese restaurants, from Cantonese to Sichuan, and nearby Taiwanese. For American-Chinese staples, Canton Cooks is among the best. New Realm Brewery, situated on the Atlanta Beltline has everything: good beer, food, and A-Plus as a hangout, especially on a beautiful day. This is Lone Star House of Design, a podcast about all things design and architecture from the Great State of Texas. Following is another installment of The Wellness and Design Thought Leadership Series presented by ThermaSol. This conversation, as previously mentioned is from the Wellness and Design Thought Leadership Series presented by ThermaSol. This conversation features designers; Cindy Aplanalp-Yates, Allison Jaffe and Cheri Etchelecu. It is moderated by Dove Agency founder, Beth Bender. I am incredibly proud to partner with ThermaSol on this initiative called the Wellness and Design Thought Leadership Series. These panel conversations feature smart, innovative design thought leaders talking about issues affecting us all in the business today. I’m working with ThermaSol for the second year now and I have had the opportunity to get to know Mitch Altman, third generation of this family owned and operated business. This company was built on innovation. Their origin story is impressive and the products are innovative, they showcase not only the increased interest for wellness in todays ground breaking design but the need for smart showers, steam and spa-like luxury in the bathroom. If you are not incorporating smart steam showers into every bathroom you design, you are missing out on an opportunity to increase the per bathroom budget and provide clients with something they desperately want.Brilliant! This is Lone Star House of Design a showcase of divine design from the great State of Texas featuring Allison Jaffe, an Austin designer whose cerebral approach to design is nothing short of genius. We talk about the psychology of design quite often on the podcast because it isn’t easy to understand what someone really wants the design to ‘feel’ like. Allison didn’t start as a designer, to the contrary, she started by pursuing the sciences, specifically, a degree in neuropsychology from the University of Pittsburgh. You are going to hear how Allison modified her pursuit from the scientific to the creative and used her education to drill down with clients to reach their subconscious desires as it relates to the manner in which they wish to live. Sigmund Freud said, “The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.” To me, this is one of the true assets of interior designers. The truly talented ones have different means and methods for discovering what the client’s true desire is. We all know clients that have said one thing only to later discover they mean something entirely different. Speaking of discovering true desires…you have needs too. Find some inspiration and new perspectives so you can see, in real time how the industry is changing so quickly. While discussing Cuban sandwiches, we give deserved shoutouts to Mojito's Cuban-American Bistro, Tortugas Cuban Grill, D'Cuban Café, and Buena Gente Cuban Bakery. “Hidden gems” is a phrase thrown around a lot, but what does it mean? Joe Duffy may not be able to define it, but he knows them when he tastes them and he may unveil the two best in Greater Atlanta in Frankfurt Doner and Meats in Ball Ground and Johns Creek's Mama's Kitchen. This is Lone Star House of Design, a showcase of amazing design and architecture from the Great State of Texas. This is a look back at some of the talent making Texas a hotbed for new, amazing, and world-class design. Mike and Bryan created Yates Desygn in 2015 and have been practicing in Dallas ever since. Important to know, and you will hear how they hung a shingle in Texas without knowing anyone in Texas. They are going to share how they networked and built their firm from scratch. This is one of those rare firms that offer both interior and landscape services with equal mastery. You will find both southern charm and big-city sophistication in their work. I think that is important right now. I believe that the renewed interest in those moving from highly congested cities like LA, New York and Chicago is growing. I think in the next 3-5 years you will see an absolute explosion in the Texas population. Dallas being its biggest beneficiary. Folks moving in will be looking to blend their contemporary sensibilities with southern charm and The Yates’ are in a very good spot to benefit. This is Mike and Bryan Yates of Yates Desygn.Luxury living and livable design can both share the same space and designer Traci Connell shares her strategies for making sure both concepts get equal focus in her work. Traci shares her design philosophy and walks us through a few of her projects. You are going to hear how high-end luxury meets easy living. Traci also shares some time and money-saving strategies. Enjoy this conversation with Traci Connell of Traci Connell Interiors.Sara Malek Barney, founder of Bandd Design. Sara is a remarkable talent who brings a number of unique elements to her incredible rise in design, that of a first career in sports and entertainment. She worked for Hollywood powerhouse talent firm CAA, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and then came home to Austin to launch her design firm, Bandd Design. Sara and I talk about her journey and her work, work that is influenced by her Hollywood experience and Texas roots, equally and balanced which makes her work truly unique.Thank you, Mike, Bryan, Traci and Sara, that was fun and I truly appreciate the time. This is Lone Star House of Design, a showcase of amazing design and architecture from the Great State of Texas. This is a look back at some of the talents making Texas a hotbed for new, amazing, and world-class design. Ann Edgerton is an interior decorator and stylist from Austin and we spoke about wide-open spaces that seem appropriate when talking about ideas emanating from Texas. Ann has a very unique design signature that maximizes space, proportion, and product blending to create unique environments. We talk about her approach to this blending of large spaces and cozy design, modern lines with rustic materials, cosmopolitan ranches, and living room offices. I think Ann has a unique talent for blending and molding space, materials, and color to achieve unique moments in design.Kim Armstrong is a designer out of Dallas. She is fearless with color, surgical in her blending of materials and styles. I became familiar with Kim’s work through a friend in Dallas who is also a designer. When one designer tells me that I have to check out the work of another designer, that is a suggestion to which I cannot say no. And I am glad that I followed up because our conversation was fun, colorful and I think you are going to enjoy it. This is Kim Armstrong in episode number 5 of Lone Star House of Design!Studio|Ten|25 is the Dallas based firm owned and operated by Abbe Fenimore. Abbe has earned a reputation for her playful style and unique interiors. She has earned the nickname, “queen of sorority houses.” I have never before spoken with a designer who specialized in sorority houses. I can tell you, having lived in a fraternity, college housing can take some serious abuse. Abbe has figured out how to preserve the beauty and high performance. She applies these same ideas to her residential and office projects. Abbe and I had a very cool chat about these and other issues that shape design and architecture in the Great State of Texas.Thank you, Ann, Kim, and Abbe, that was fun and I truly appreciate the time. This is Lone Star House of Design, a showcase of amazing design and architecture from the Great State of Texas. This is a look back at some of the talents making Texas a hotbed for new, amazing, and world-class design. The first episode featured an amazing designer and a really good friend. What does that really mean, intentional design? Isn’t all design, ‘intentional’? I really thought so prior to speaking with Ashley, but, as I always do through these conversations, I learned something. Intentional has many different meanings to different people. The intent of crafting space with a purposeful goal of blending old and new while crafting a unique space specifically with the individual for whom the space is crafted is an art form that requires a great deal of focus and applied craft. This is Mike and Bryan Yates of Yates Desygn.Thank you Bryan and Mike, excellent job, that was fun. Studio|Ten|25 is the Dallas based firm owned and operated by Abbe Fenimore. Abbe has earned a reputation for her playful style and unique interiors. She has earned the nickname, “queen of sorority houses.” I have never before spoke with a designer who specialized in sorority houses. I can tell you, having lived in a fraternity, college housing can take some serious abuse. Abbe has figured out how to preserve beauty and high performance. She applies these same ideas to her residential and office projects. Abbe and I had a very cool chat about these and other issues that shape design and architecture in the Great State of Texas.Thank you Abbe, that was fun and I truly appreciate the time. Kim Armstrong is a designer out of Dallas. Ann Edgerton is an interior decorator and stylist from Austin and we spoke about wide-open spaces which seems appropriate when talking about ideas emanating from Texas. Ann has a very unique design signature that maximizes space, proportion, and product blending to create unique environments. We talk about her approach to this blending of large spaces and cozy design, modern lines with rustic materials, cosmopolitan ranches, and living room offices. I think Ann has a unique talent for blending and molding space, materials, and color to achieve unique moments in design. Thank you, Ann, that was great and I truly appreciate the time. I’m Josh Cooperman and this is Lone Star | House of Design, produced and distributed by the team that brings you Convo By Design with another story about design and architecture from the Great State of Texas. This is the inaugural episode of Lone Star House of Design so I think I should probably back up a bit and explain where this came from for those new to the show. I’m Josh Cooperman, I host and publish Convo By Design, a podcast about all things design and architecture covering Southern California and a bit beyond. I have been hosting and publishing Convo By Design for seven years as of this recording with over 260 episodes of the podcast, 200 videos on the YouTube channel, over 50 live panels, and events produced and I have hosted well over 500 interviews with some of the most amazing and talented creators in the biz today. I am a design enthusiast with a background in broadcasting. I produced a design house here in Los Angeles in 2012, contributed editorial to some of California’s most forward-thinking home decor magazines and I produce panel conversations for design-focused events in California as well. All this being said, I produce Convo By Design and now Lone Star House of Design because I love the design and architecture space. The creators you will hear from on Lone Star House of Design are taking Texas design to new heights through brave choices, incredible creativity, and brilliant business minds. You are going to hear about how they craft their creations as well as their design firms. this is how design is changing the landscape across the great State of Texas, this is Lone Star House of Design. The first episode features an amazing designer and a really good friend. Tracy Martin Taylor is the principal designer behind Eleven 11 Design. She is also a former boss of mine when I lived in Dallas. Tracy is a creative mind like none I have met before. Her creativity is immense, her compassion, even greater and her skill as a business owner is why Tracy is so successful in this, her second career. Tracy and I discuss our past which led to her design firm, the tough choices she made to get where she is and how the state of design is growing across the Metroplex and beyond. Today’s special, special guest is Suzy Bureau of GiveBackHack. If you listened to episode 50, you knew this would happen. I was encouraged to share a little more about my story, especially Wild Tiger Tees, and Suzy jumped in to share my experience starting a social enterprise. Wild Tiger Tees came together during a weekend at GiveBackHack in 2018. I, Adam Morris, am the co-founder of this social enterprise where we “empower youth experiencing homelessness with the skills necessary to gain employment through the art of screen printing.” We partner with Star House under their workforce development program called Star Works. Our talk began at a point where I did not have an idea for Wild Tiger Tees or the People Helping People Podcast. In 2006, I was out in London working at a bank after my MBA and was not connecting with my role. If anything, the most meaningful thing to me at that time was my volunteer work with Samaritans for suicide prevention. Once I acknowledged that passion I began trying to build a career around giving back and making an impact. Of course, I didn’t forget to tell Suzy about the oddly comical moment of being let go from that bank job. Until 2016, I wasn’t having any luck with ideas on how I would give back or make an impact. Then I realized that 10 years passed already. I told Suzy about the importance I found in being able to connect with people and what things mean. I discussed my thoughts on being inspired to make a change awhile “thinking into it”. Suzy gave a positive outlook on my choice to look at the strengths and weaknesses of my entrepreneur skills; whether it was looking at experience or exposure to the issue. I discovered that spending 10 years of trying to figure something out on my own was not helping much, and decided I needed to talk to people who were active and engaged in cool work. My only thought was to see where that would take me. With this approach, I was led to the conversation inspiring this podcast. Coincidentally, or maybe not-so-coincidentally, the same approach towards interaction inspired the idea behind Wild Tiger Tees. I enjoyed getting to dig back into the journey with Suzy. Another inspiration behind Wild Tiger Tees came from a staggering statistic. Out of the youth that come into Star House, 90% secure jobs. After revisiting those youth three months later, only 10% still have that job. Wild Tiger Tees began concentrating on better preparing the youth to deal with the real-world workforce. Our focus points are teamwork, communication, effort, and punctuality. The conversation with Suzy had such great momentum, so we split our talk into two episodes. Up next, we get into building an interdisciplinary team, doing the groundwork for your ideas, and making things work. If you want to learn more about Wild Tiger Tees, check out Instagram, Facebook, or the official site.
Ann leads a team that works with local youth experiencing homelessness to provide a safe respite from the streets & crucial connections to stabilize resources.
Heide Rembold is a conscious business activist here in Columbus, Ohio. She’s passionate about reducing waste, making purchasing decisions that have an impact, and social entrepreneurship. She’s just released her holiday guide to purchasing conscious gifts. Heidi runs @consciouscbus on Instagram - highlighting small businesses doing good in central Ohio, with a real focus on conscious living and conscious consumerism. For a long time, Heidi has been digging into social issues here in Columbus. She previously worked at the Star House as a youth advocate -- the Star House is a drop-in centre for youth experiencing homelessness, aged 14-24. She would spend time with the youth to listen to their story and help them in any way that she could. She also has launched a social enterprise called Solar Bean Cafe and is currently looking for a home for her coffeehouse, where she plans to hire at-risk youth and others with barriers to employment. I love her passion for reducing waste and evaluating what you purchase to see where you can make better choices. We both love amazon but recognize that with a little planning you can make choices which support your local economy and have a better net impact on the environment and the community. She's put together this guide to help save you time on finding these opportunities. Check out what she's doing on Instagram, Facebook and on The Conscious Hive! Read Full Transcript [00:00:00]Adam: Welcome to people, helping people, the podcast to inspire greater social change in the business world and give you ideas on how to take action. I'm your host, Adam Morris, and today I'm talking with Heidi rumble, a conscious business activist here in Columbus, Ohio. She's passionate about reducing waste and making purchasing decisions that have an impact, and she's also has plans for our own social enterprise. [00:00:35] She's just released her holiday guide to help you purchase conscious gifts. And I'm very excited to have her on the podcast to talk about easy ways that you can make an impact while you do your holiday shopping. So without further ado, Heidi, welcome on the podcast. [00:00:50] Heidi: Thank you. It's so nice to be here. [00:00:52] Adam: You have quite a social impact mission that you're developing in your life. And I was wondering if we could just start and talk about some of the projects that you're working on. [00:01:01] Heidi: Absolutely. So we can start with, conscious Columbus since that's my kind of most recent and most active one. I started at conscious Columbus too. [00:01:08] Really connect consumers with conscious businesses in Columbus, Ohio. so kind of a little bit of everything, social enterprises, nonprofits, even those small kind of non-classified businesses that actually are giving back with their business in some way or another. So I started that on social media, just an Instagram page, really to get with people, meet new people, and connect everybody together. [00:01:28]I always say, I'm not. Necessarily the creative one behind the scenes doing the arts and crafts, but I am a loud speaker and I'm very passionate so I can really amplify their voice and their existence. so sort of that and just started posting, started getting to meet people. Well, doing a lot of networking with it and then going from there. [00:01:48]we are slowly transitioning into a full blog and a couple of other little fun things that are coming along this holiday season to really highlight those businesses and those people and individuals doing good in Columbus. All right, cool. [00:02:02] Adam: You have big dreams as well. Plans to open a coffee shop down the road, correct? [00:02:05] Heidi: Yes. Yes. I have a social enterprise of my own called the solar bean cafe, and currently we're seeking a home in a small village outside of Zanesville, Ohio. it's an impoverished village with a lot of, social issues going on right now, and they're looking to revamp it.
Many children in Franklin County are born into complex circumstances and work hard to navigate life absent of consistent and thoughtful guidance from a community of caring and engaged adults. The result is "Opportunity Youth", 18-24-year-olds who are unstably housed, not on track to graduate high school or further educational programs, and not earning a sustainable wage. Building on previous research from two previous reports, the Children's Defense Fund has provided a fresh look at Franklin County Opportunity Youth. To reinforce the findings of this report, a diverse cross-section of community partners have come together to ensure that all youth enter adulthood prepared to pursue opportunities to live well. To discuss Opportunity Youth and what's being done to support them, we welcome Tracy Nájera, Ph.D. (Executive Director of Children's Defense Fund-Ohio), Ann Bischoff (CEO of Star House), and host Tonisha Johnson (Reporter at Spectrum News 1). Recorded on September 18, 2019 at the Boat House at Confluence Park in Columbus, Ohio.
Lamar Peoples is the outreach coordinator at the Star House, a drop-in center for youth experiencing homelessness here in Central Ohio. Lamar’s has spent his career on the ground reaching out to people, and he’s put a lot of effort into something that has long been a mystery to me... politics. Generally, political news drives me nuts, but I’ve always wondered how politics actually works, and how people make a difference through the government. His political career started off with grassroots outreach into the community, knocking on doors. October 9, 2012, met President Obama on the tarmac when he came into Columbus, Ohio, and was impacted by his presence. After the election, he became a super volunteer, canvasing through different neighborhoods. And it gave him a first-hand perspective of what people really want from their government. People want clean air, a livable wage job, and access to decent healthcare. They want their kids and grandkids to have a good education. One of his colleagues got a job at the statehouse, and he started hanging out with him... which gave him a chance to talk to local politicians of all background. He was such in the thick of it, he joined an internship in the Ohio House of Representatives. It really gave him a perspective of the state - it is made of 99 members, all representing various representations. It’s interesting because, on the inside, all the politicians are getting along - they all have to work together. But then quite often the put a show when they’re on the floor... partly to keep their base in check, to show up for what their base has voted for them on. He also found it interesting how many different issues people represent, and how there is a lot of negotiating to address a broad range of issue. Over time, Lamar got involved with AmeriCorps and realized he really loves the non-profit sector. He enjoys finding a mission and creating programming around realizing that mission. He really has this passion for going out, knocking doors, being that presents, working with politicians and talking about policy. For a while, he went around and let people know about the work Habitat for Humanity does - telling people how they can build a house from the ground up, and get a 15-year interest-free loan... as well as the work they do to educate and help people learn how to be homeowners. Habitat is a great organization which doesn’t just provide housing but teaches people about how to be successful in their homeownership. He went to work for Danny O’Conner, and found it really insightful working in the statehouse, but wanted more than just an administrative position, so around August of 2017, left to be the outreach coordinator at Star House - a local center for youth ages 14-24 who are experiencing homelessness. They provide access to food, clothes, counselling, workforce development, (even yoga). In 2018, they served 1,200 individual youths. There is an estimate that there are 3,000 - 9,000 in the Columbus area of these youth in any year. He’s run for office, although missed the deadline to be endorsed by the Democratic Party, and without that endorsement, it is very difficult. But it’s also very challenging... as a young politician, you join a caucus, and a junior member of a caucus focuses largely on getting re-elected. It’s often based on seniority on who has the greatest voice, so after you’ve demonstrated that you can get re-elected, you slowly develop more and more capabilities to effect policy. Best way to get involved? “Think about what keeps you up at night. What’s on your mind about what could be better. Think about it, and about the party that supports it. Each party has local volunteer events - search in google, and Democratic Party in Franklinton County - and they’ll be eager to talk. Learn the issues and go from there!”-- Lamar Peoples

Marsha P. Johnson was a legend of Christopher Street, a revolutionary trans and LGBTQ+ activist, and a leading figure of Stonewall. Famed for her extravagant floral headdresses, her bright red plastic heels, and her generous spirit, Marsha made a name for herself not just as a drag queen, but as a mother to the queer street and trans youth who needed her. Together with her best friend, fellow trans activist Sylvia Rivera, she created STAR, the Street Transvestite (now Transgender) Action Revolutionaries, and advocated for the rights of the most marginalised of her community. If you all want to know about the people in jail and do not forget Bambi L'amour, and Dora Mark, Kenny Metzner, and other gay people in jail, come and see the people at Star House on Twelfth Street on 640 East Twelfth Street between B and C apartment 14. In this episode we dive deep into investment insight, on how to save for your future. The People Helping People podcast is back after a long break. Over the last year, I went to Give Back Hack up in Cleveland, and pitched an idea to start a t-shirt screen printing company to employ youth experiencing homelessness. The idea was selected, a team was formed, and we launched Wild Tiger Tees. Working in partnership with the Star House, we're helping mentor and employ youth in the Columbus area. The youth that we work with are amazing - they're all quite different with each navigating their own challenging situation - and usually without family or mentors giving them feedback or direction. So, I was excited to recored a podcast with a long-time friend, and New Yorker, Alan Grodin, founder of Northern State Financial. He has a career in financial services, but has been giving back by teaching youth about finance and saving... so I was curious what he does. Alan started his financial services right on the precipice of the tech bubble... and weathered the storm in 2008, when the average stock lost 40% of its value. He speaks about good savings habits -- but what struck me is that his core message was to build the habit. In your 20s and 30s, even if you can just save $50 a month - it’s giving you the mindset you need to be successful later on. On the flip side, he warns to never be fooled by credit cards, and to learn how to use them as tool to only spend what you have... never to accumulate debt with them, because their interest rates are so high that it becomes a very ineffective method of managing your money. I didn’t know this, but when selecting a financial advisor, you can search on FINRA -- (I even checked out Alan) and advisors with more complaints, or those that move between jobs more often, should be treated with suspect. The podcast is packed full of investment advice, and is a great starting point if you have no idea about saving for your future, so tune in!
When you walk around Columbus, one population you don’t encounter are the homeless, but they are here behind the backdrop of the city. The organization Star House reaches out to specifically help those who are between the ages of 14 to 24 and don’t have permanent housing. Star house offers a safe place, providing these homeless youth with access to food and basic needs, showers, resources, and counseling. Not only are they the only research-based drop-in center in the country, but they are also launching a social enterprise to help this vulnerable population get the support they need to get on their feet. For episode 21, I sat down with Ann Bischoff, CEO of Star House to learn more about their mission and understand better the homeless youth they serve, and some of the challenges they face. The Four Pillars of Stability Ann described the four pillars that people need in order to have stability - housing, transportation, jobs and support from others. Without any one of these pillars, then the others fall apart. Without transportation or stable housing, it’s hard to get a job. And without a job, you can’t get housing or afford transportation. Without support from others, then dealing with the complexities of the three other pillars can be paralyzing. It's a catch-22. It’s a catch-22. This is why Star House exists - to help set these pillars up, in a way that they’re not going to just collapse after a short period of time. Understand What You Don’t See I think Ann really explained it well that you can drive from the suburbs downtown to work, and never see the epidemic of homelessness in Columbus. I’m so glad of the work that Star House is done, but it’s so clear that there is so much more to do. If you want to explore the conversation further, The Columbus Metropolitan Club is having a talk at noon on November 29th about the Unexpected Face of Homelessness: Teens on the Street to explore this topic further. It’s down at the Boat House at Confluence Park, and you can find more on columbusmetroclub.org.
