Here's my background. Love Bryan Adams. He did "Cuts Like a Knife", one of the great rock tracks of eighties radio. "Straight from the Heart", one of the great ballads of rock radio, and the windows down, summertime, turn it up loud, catch a little buzz, rock and roll of Reckless. His eighties work is the foundation. And then he went into the nineties and worked with Mutt Lange and had a huge album. And then worked on some soundtracks, went ballad-heavy, and then lost his way. Now I saw him live, would have been 1987.  The Hooters opened. It was Joe Louis Arena. So it was the, you know, 17,000. Great show. Saw him in Indianapolis  - 2007-ish. And it was really good Bryan Adams has always been good live. He has a 2025 tour of Europe planned. Now he has new music. And I've been so disappointed with Bryan Adams music over the past 30 years.  Never a great lyricist - he's not Springsteen. He's not Petty. But the the banging eighties guitar, drums, whiskey-soaked voice played loud - that's Bryan Adams. That is his sweet spot, and and he had lost that. Shyper-generic and not great fun - to me anyway. But he's come back with some new music. It's a first listen for me.  Hadn't heard it yet. We're gonna hear it together. We're gonna I'm gonna react to it, and we'll see what we see what I think. What does it do for me? For you?  A single called Roll With the Punches was released in February. That's gonna be the name of the album due to come out sometime in 2025. And then he has released a second single in March He's working again with Mutt Lange. Let's see what this sounds like.    may stop it as we're getting through part of it. What do we think? So this is the brand new single. It's called "Make Up Your Mind".  Let's turn it up and listen together.   And then I found a couple of added surprises. :) email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com

We play just five songs from an artist's catalog - from all the albums, the singles, the live albums. The music game is called "Play Me 5". Can we hear a band or performer in five songs, and find the reason - a bit of the understanding - as to why they are who they are and why they matter in the rock and roll continuum?  That's it.  Let's go. This episode, it is Bryan Adams.   Why does Adams, a rock and roll singer from Canada, have a place in rock and roll history?  Or does he? Reckless was a huge album.  Cuts Like a Knife had a pretty good pop/rock/heartland vibe too. Five songs. That's the rule.  Agree or disagree as you please. Five songs that do two things: 1. Give a representation of the artist - the musician - the band - the singer.  2. Find songs that reveal a bit of the magic of the performance or the musicians.  Or both. With an unprecedented four Juno awards for songwriter of the year, Jim Vallance is one of Canada's pre-eminent songwriters and the creative force behind top tracks for artists like Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Glass Tiger. He played drums with the Vancouver band Prism, and wrote their first single, Spaceship Superstar (which was played on the Discovery Space Shuttle). After touring with Prism,  he became a session musician before a chance meeting with 18-year-old Bryan Adams determined his songwriting career direction. The two began a fruitful decades-long songwriting collaboration.  Adams's album, Cuts Like a Knife, yielded three hit singles co-written with Vallance, and reached platinum. The follow-up album Reckless cemented the Vallance-Adams writing partnership in the annals of rock music. No. 1 on the Canadian and U.S. album charts, it sold five times platinum, with six Vallance co-writes in the Top 15, including the duo's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, Heaven; and the No. 1 Mainstream Rock tracks Run To You and Somebody. Vallance concentrated on songwriting, penning a non-stop stream of hit rock ballads, including the now-famous chart-topping charity single Tears Are Not Enough, a collaboration with Adams and fellow Canadian producer David Foster. Jim's creative talent has benefitted top international acts like Pat Benatar, Roger Daltry, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, Rick Springfield, Tina Turner,  Rod Stewart, Anne Murray, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Chilliwack, Loverboy, Toronto, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS and The Scorpions. Vallance went on to collaborate with Adams on songs for the Broadway show Pretty Woman: The Musical. He has served on the boards of SOCAN, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and FACTOR, is a member of the Order of Canada, and boasts 22 SOCAN Classic awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

"When I got into medical school, the last thing in the world I wanted to be was a surgeon because I couldn't stand the sight of blood," said Dr. Mike Moser. Fast-forward to the present day, where Moser is now one of Saskatchewan's top kidney transplant surgeons, winning last year's Golden Scalpel Award for Pre-clerkship Education, the 2022 Logan Boulet Humanitarian of the Year Award, and numerous teaching awards. In this episode, the professor of general surgery at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine takes us back to one pivotal day where everything changed, propelling forward his career in Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery and organ transplants Moser's research has pushed forward transplant science, and led to safer kidney biopsies. Along with interventional radiologist Dr. Chris Wall, Moser led the charge to bring NanoKnife technology to Saskatchewan. His team has now spent a decade using the tool to treat otherwise inoperable tumors.  The NanoKnife relies on irreversible electroporation (IRE) — using electrical pulses to create tiny holes in tumor cells, causing them to die without harming surrounding structures. "I love making those little, elegant, tiny connections," said Moser, whose work focuses on destroying cancer cells, while preserving delicate tissue. Those two interests led to collaborations with various departments, including biomedical engineering, as well as chemistry, immunology, and pharmacology.  Moser is most excited today to see IRE combined with immunotherapy, to enhance the body's immune response against cancer.  "It's like a killed cell vaccine situation because we've got these dead, helpless cancer cells. They're still exposing their proteins," said Moser. Although the research is still in its early stages, Moser said the results so far show "great potential" in treating metastatic cancers. "One could actually treat the area where the tumor started without directly treating it,” he said.

EX57 - Bryan Adams - A Great Canadian Musical Export - Cuts Like a Knife and Everything I Do, I Do it For You Bryan Adams, in full Bryan Guy Adams, (born November 5, 1959, Kingston, Ontario, Canada), Canadian rock singer-songwriter, photographer, and social activist whose hit albums Cuts Like a Knife (1983) and Reckless (1984) made him one of the most popular and successful recording artists of the 1980s. Adams was musically talented at an early age and taught himself how to play guitar. His father served in the Canadian army, was a UN peacekeeping observer, and served as a diplomat, necessitating many relocations for the family. When his parents divorced, he lived with his mother just north of Vancouver, British Columbia. At age 16, he dropped out of high school, ready to pursue a full-time career as a musician, having already performed as lead vocalist for Canadian glam-rock band Sweeney Todd. He spent time working in a recording studio, performing on tours, and recording music for Sweeney Todd's album If Wishes Were Horses (1977). Shortly after the recording's release, Adams was introduced to Jim Vallance, a Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer. Vallance recognized Adams's ability but also saw the need for further vocal training. With Vallance's help, it was not long before Adams established a powerful, distinct sound, one compared to that of Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, and Steve Marriott. 1983 - November: Billy Idol "Rebel Yell"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2020 40:38

Did the artists make MTV, or did MTV make the artists?  There is no doubt about the complementary relationship between the then-new music video channel and rocker Billy Idol.  He had exploded on the scene with his debut solo album featuring hits such as "White Wedding" and "Dancing With Myself."  His popularity would continue with his second studio album, Rebel Yell.  Born as William Michael Albert Broad, Billy Idol found his studio name in a schoolteacher's derogatory description of him as "idle."  Billy Idol got his start in the punk scene.  He started performing with a retro-rock band called Chelsea in 1976, but quit after a few weeks to co-found a punk band called Generation X.  While the music was punk, the image Idol created was more 1950's Elvis-styled rocker with a dash of glam rock thrown in.  Billy Idol was a prominent member of the "second British invasion" on MTV in the early 80's, and would see mainstream success with Rebel Yell.  Singles like the title track and "Eyes Without a Face" got heavy airplay on rock stations in the US.  Idol's iconic look and "whiplash smile" was especially appealing to the new media of music videos shown prominently on MTV but also on other stations both on cable TV and the airwaves.  If you enjoyed music videos back in the day, this episode will leave you saying "more, more more!" Daytime DramaThis slower and deeper cut was the second track on the album and was not released as a single.  It compares life and relationships to a soap opera.  "Beautiful star of my daytime drama...you're my hope for a future."Blue HighwayA faster rocking song, this track was also not released as a single.  However it was the B-side to the single "Flesh for Fantasy," and it did get significant airplay on rock stations at the time.Flesh for FantasyThis track was the third single from the album and a significant hit, peaking at 29 on Billboard's Hot 100.  It is heavily produced, and while a rock song it also was played in dance clubs as well.  "Face to face and back to back, you see and feel my sex attack.  Sing it!"Catch My FallPerhaps less popular than other album singles, this was the fourth single from the album.  It has a new wave feel as well, and continues to have a dance beat. The saxophone is played by Mars Williams.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:"Bob's Major Award" (from the motion picture “A Christmas Story")This now-classic Christmas movie was surprisingly not that successful as a first run movie in 1983.  This song gets its title from the "leg lamp." STAFF PICKS:“The Safety Dance” by Men Without HatsRob's staff pick spent 4 weeks at number 3 on Billboard's hot 100, and was another big hit from MTV.  The song was meant to be a statement about people "pogoing" - flailing around on the dance floor in a way that could cause people to get hurt.“Mean Streak” by Y&TWayne features a heavy metal song from a group originally known as "Yesterday & Today."  Y&T formed in 1974 in Oakland, and opened for a number of bands like Wild Cherry and Kiss.  The lead singer is still performing with the group, but unfortunately all other members have died.  Lars of Metallica credits Y&T with inspiring him to become a musician.“Mama” by GenesisBruce's staff pick is the opening track to Genesis' self-titled album.  This dark song is about a young man with a mother fixation towards an older prostitute.  Mike Rutherford wrote the electric drum machine parts that start the song and continue throughout the piece.“This Time” by Bryan AdamsBrian closes out the staff picks with the lead track from Adam's "Cuts Like a Knife" album.  Bryan Adams was another beneficiary of MTV's influence, and this album was his breakthrough hit.   LAUGH TRACK:Jim Carrey premieres on Johnny CarsonThis month marked the first time Canadian Jim Carrey appeared on American television on "The Tonight Show."  He would go on several years later to fame after his stint on the television show "In Living Color"

His fourth studio album would move Bryan Adams from a successful singer-songwriter to super-stardom. The multi-platinum album, “Reckless” is packed with hits, as six of the ten tracks would hit the charts including the evergreen hit “Summer of 69.” Adams took some time off following his multi-year tour "Cuts Like a Knife," and that brief retreat would result in a burst of creativity that would result in many of this album's hits. Friend of the show Vann Mathis joins us for this podcast. “One Night Love Affair” This track was the fifth single to hit the charts, and the title is pretty self-explanatory. “Run to You” This debut single from the album starts with a great guitar riff, and describes an ongoing affair, unlike the first track we profiled. “Somebody” This track was the second single off the album with a straightforward rock sound and a catchy chorus. “Kids Wanna Rock” We pick up the pace, leaving the love songs behind with this strong rock track. Even though not released as a single, it still made it to number 42 on the charts. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” The horror movie that would become a classic was released in November 1984. STAFF PICKS: “I Can't Drive 55” by Sammy Hagar Hagar's protest song against the National Maximum Speed Law is enough to get your foot pressing a little heavier on the gas. Bruce explains it was inspired by a late night ticket for driving 62 in a 55 that Sammy Hagar received. “Girls with Guns” by Tommy Shaw Vann Mathis' staff pick is a fast paced throwback to the 80's from Styx alumnus Tommy Shaw. Styx band mate Dennis DeYoung was also doing solo work at the time. The video was filmed from one camera in a continuous take. “Hello Again” by The Cars Rob presents this fourth single from the album "Heartbeat City." The Cars were a huge hit on MTV, with well produced, awared winning videos. They balanced well between pop hooks and experimental new wave music. “Turn Up The Radio” by Autograph Wayne's staff pick is a mid-80's rock anthem. This is the lead single off the album "Sign in Please," and was their only top 40 hit. "Day in, day out, all week long, things go better with rock!" “Sea of Love” by The Honeydrippers Brian goes in a sentimental direction with Robert Plant's cover of Phil Phillips from Lake Charles, Louisiana. Phillips original version was a one-hit wonder in 1959. Paul Shaffer was on keyboards in The Honeydrippers. LAUGH TRACK: Ray Stevens - “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival” Ray Stevens takes us out this week with his memories of what happened when a squirrel got loose in the church.

The Hellfire missile offers an interesting perspective, not just on military technology, but product lifecycle in general. The missile was initially developed with a shaped charge, which means the explosion it generated was intense, but channeled to produce a very narrow, focused blast. This make sense as its primary application was taking out heavily armored tanks and vehicles. The precision of the missile drew military leaders to desire its use in targeting groups of enemy troops, so it was modified to provide a larger explosion radius. The problem was that the Hellfire was not only taking out the intended targets, but placing innocent civilians and infrastructure at risk.To help address this concern, the Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency developed a variant of the Hellfire during the Obama Administration. And according to a report in the Wall Street Journal last week, the agencies have been utilizing the R9X in Syria and Yemen since 2017. It’s credited with taking out two very high-profile Al-Qaeda targets. The R9X is a missile, but instead of being packed with explosive ordinance, it’s designed to discharge six metal blades seconds before impact. And seeing as how they’re traveling at up to 1,000 mph, they pretty much cut through whatever is their way – like the roofs of armored vehicles or buildings. So they’re not only precise and effective, there’s no explosion. They R9X essentially reverts back to the Hellfire’s initial mission of an extremely precise strike. The operational aspects of the R9X are fascinating, but use of the 100-pound missile, according to a report by Defense One, has thus far been limited to less than 10 instances. The premise is similar to that of the railgun - hit the enemy with something very hard that’s traveling very fast. The main difference is that while the railgun’s targets are 100 miles away, the R9X has a maximum effective range of about six miles, and can essentially be fired from the ground or air on platforms already in use.
