Welcome to Episode #54 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Vera, a yoga teacher from Brunei, was so fun as we took a really honed in on what Universal Yoga really is. I hope that this conversation made you curious about how Universal Yoga can come from within, while still honoring the anatomical and scientific approach of the body. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about Universal Yoga, and the difference between being a yoga teacher and a yoga practitioner, then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Chek Lee Kong (Vera) Chek Lee Kong is a yoga teacher and studio owner in Brunei. She is the owner of Truharmony Yoga Studio in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. She teaches Hatha yoga (200hrs Certified Vikasa Yoga), Vinyasa Yoga- Fit Flow Fly (300hrs Bryce Yoga), and Universal Yoga (200hrs Certified). When the perfect opportunity arose, she renovated a space which is now Truharmony, located at Gadong Central in Brunei. Vera has also studied with dozens of yoga teachers around the world and completed so many workshops with Kino McGregor, Dylan Werner, Jason Crandell, Annie Carpenter, Sri Dharma Mittra, Tiffany Chruikshank, and more! What to expect in the Yoga In Brunei episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast What really peaked my interest was her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Universal Yoga. Universal Yoga is something I've never heard of before, and I was grateful that Vera took time to unravel how she first came to know about Universal Yoga and what Universal yoga is. Created and taught by Andrey Lappa. Universal Yoga has set sequences based on a highly scientific and anatomical approach.Yet, she says that Universal Yoga comes from within. The principle of Universal yoga is to always be awake and and to be conscious. It turns out that the founder of Universal Yoga is actually an engineer as well, so his attention to detail, anatomy, degrees of motion and movement is truly incredible. We talked also about how Vera— very recently— burned her legs very badly and has had to recover from this injury and return to her yoga practice and to teaching. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Brunei episode? What is Universal Yoga? Yoga that comes from within, not without What an engineer can bring to yoga as a teacher Being a yoga teacher is different from a yoga practitioner Recovering from badly burned legs and coming back to yoga Connect with Vera https://www.instagram.com/verayoga/ https://www.instagram.com/truharmony_yogastudio/ Want more? Yoga Is Vegan

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 21, 2021 58:17

Whitney discovered yoga in 2008 while in nursing school. A lifelong athlete, she was looking for increased flexibility and strength to supplement her triathlon training. As her high-stress career as a cardiovascular RN developed, she learned to rely on her yoga practice as a way to process the experiences she had at work, keep her body healthy, and stay calm under pressure. Throughout the years, Whitney’s yoga practice has helped her recover from eating disorders, sexual abuse, physically and emotionally abusive relationships, physical injuries, and addiction. This ultimately led her to become a yoga teacher and owner of the Indigo Yoga Studio, and embrace veganism. She first stopped eating animals at the age of 16. A lifelong animal lover, she grew up with pets of all sorts, from snakes and rats to birds, horses, goats, and pigs... and of course cats and dogs. She connected deeply with horses, working with them from a young age. One year, her 4-H pig won a prize and was sold at auction. Very distressed at the thought of her friend being turned into bacon, that was it until age 18, when she started eating meat as a way to attempt to lose weight on a diet. Once she stopped drinking alcohol and deepened her yoga practice, she gravitated naturally towards a plant-based diet, and became vegan completely in 2019. The transition to veganism was natural and driven by deep shadow work and spiritual searching during a dark time in life, particularly sparked by the teachings of Sri Dharma Mittra and practice of Dharma and Kundalini Yoga. She is an E-RYT® 200, YACEP® and practices/teaches a variety of styles of yoga, including Hot Yoga, Vinyasa, Yin, Ashtanga, Rocket, and is currently in the process of obtaining her Kundalini Yoga Level 1 certification. Her daily practice is Kundalini meditation and sometimes Kriya, and some sort of asana (mostly Ashtanga primary and rocket). In this Keen on Yoga Podcast Adam talks to Sri Dharma Mittra. A yoga master who has dedicated his life to the karma yoga or selfless service of sharing the accumulated wisdom gained through constant practice and teaching over a half-century at his school in New York and around the world. Sri Dharma Mittra has dedicated most of his life in service to humanity teaching yoga, the ancient knowledge of how to attain radiant health and develop spiritually. Since 1967, he has been teaching classical yoga: advanced postures, Yama and Niyama, and how to lead a content, simple and happy life. Sri Dharma was born in 1939 in the small, remote village of Pirapora, Brazil and was raised Catholic in a poor family of 5 children. In his early teens, he became involved in esoteric teachings and yoga through books his younger brother was studying. From 1958 through 1964, Sri Dharma served in the Brazilian National Air Force and practiced bodybuilding, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 1962, he took top honors in a national bodybuilding contest, achieved second place in powerlifting and was awarded the title “Mister Minas Gerais” (the state in Brazil he is from). As above, Sri Dharma had only practiced yoga through books in his late teens when his younger brother Sattya went to New York City to meet and commence studies with their future Guru (teacher; spiritual preceptor) in 1962. Sattya wrote to Sri Dharma about Sri Swami Kailashananda a.k.a. Yogi Gupta, and extended an invitation for him to come to New York City, stay with him and meet the man they had both been hoping to meet. Sri Dharma took leave of his mother, left the Air Force, sold the bodybuilding gym he owned and managed, and he gathered together just enough money for the flight to the United States. On September 14, 1964, he and his brother met on MacDougal Street near Sattya’s Leroy Street apartment in the heart of Greenwich Village, filled with the colors of the 1960s. The very next day, Sri Dharma had a private consultation with the Guru with his brother serving as translator. After meeting his Guru, Sri Dharma immersed himself in intense study and practice of the classical Eight Limbs of Yoga and dedicated ten years of his life to the full-time practice of Karma Yoga. After three-and-a-half years, Sri Dharma was initiated as a Sannyasi (one who renounces the world in order to realize God). During his years as a renunciate, he had the esteemed honor of being the personal assistant to the Guru, attending to all his needs. In 1967, Sri Dharma was asked to teach intermediate and advanced classes in Asana (postures) and Pranayama (breathing exercises) at the Yogi Gupta New York Center both for his fellow disciples and the general public. He was also involved with preparing food, manning the juice bar and was the main handyman. Sri Dharma demonstrated Yoga Asana at the lectures the Guru offered to the public in the ’60s and ’70s in hotel ballrooms all around New York City. With Yogi Gupta’s blessings, Sri Dharma left the ashram in 1974 to found the Yoga Asana Center in 1975, known of now as the Dharma Yoga Center. Sri Dharma left the ashram to live his destiny — a life dedicated to sharing and spreading the truth, knowledge and light of God through yoga in the most humble and quiet of ways. Over the years, the Dharma Yoga Center was located at many locations throughout Manhattan. It is currently located on the 6th Floor of 61 West 23rd Street. For many years, Sri Dharma was the only yoga teacher in New York City teaching advanced yoga postures. Teachers from other schools and ashrams have always come to him to learn, practice, and then teach elsewhere. Sri Dharma is truly a sweet, gentle master who sets the greatest example of yoga by living what he teaches and asking nothing in return. He continues to be that same selfless, shining example today.

Back in 2013, Jennelle was held hostage by her final sex trafficker. As she found the courage to leave, she met a guardian angel who sent her to her first yoga teacher training with Sri Dharma Mittra in NYC.   Yoga helped Jennelle begin her healing process both mentally and physically, and soon gave her the courage to leave her last trafficker.   Jennelle had a new precision of life and realized she could do so much more than sell her body. She began her path to becoming a holistic health coach. The first step she took led her to a program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In addition to studying holistic health, she also studied Tantra in Thailand, which helped her realize that sexuality is spirituality. Tantra ultimately helped her heal from the sexual trauma she experienced during her captivity.   Tantra led her to turn her feminine energy into an exotic dance journey of connection, healing, and liberation. This became the Dance OM, another channel that helped her heal from her past traumas. Everything Jennelle has learned, from yoga to holistic health to Tantra to Dance OM, became the building blocks for The O Factors.   Key topics discussed in this episode: Human trafficking Light and dark tantra Divine feminine archetypes Spirituality and sexuality Different kinds of orgasm   Quotes:   “It's all about helping women feel safe in their bodies so that they can open up and be fully surrendered, they can love more, they can be more receptive and experience more connection. Joining me on the show today are the following passionate and generous teachers...Juliana Machado (E-RYT 500) is a native of Brazil, who moved to New York in 2000 where she was introduced to yoga. She has taken 4 yoga teacher trainings since then: Ashtanga Primary Series a 200 Hour TT (2001), Forrest Yoga a 200 Hour TT (2006), and "Life of a Yogi" 500 Hour TT with Sri Dharma Mittra (2012), and the 800 Hour “Life of a Yogi” with Sri Dharma Mittra (2013). Juliana considers herself to be a lifelong student who is lucky enough to share and teach her lessons learned on this sacred science with all those who wish to receive it. She has taught in New York, Florida, California and in South America for the past 18. Juliana believes yoga is the "house of no judgement" where one of the best things a student can do is to practice as often as possible and never give up. Her teaching style comes from a belief in empowerment of the higher self and observance of the yoga ethical rules on and off the mat. She tailors her classes to fit needs of the ones in the room, so everyone in her class receives the maximum benefit from their time spent on the mat. With a background in contemporary dance and awareness through the movement, Juliana blends her artistic experience with her love of yoga, creating a unique space for self-exploration and discovery through the practice and power of yoga. Juliana believes that the highest we go, the easier it gets as we walk the path of yoga. After offering her classes widely across the globe, Juliana put roots down and opened Yoga Path for Healing in Catskill in 2017.Jacquelyn Nash is a yoga teacher and co-owner of The Yoga House. With her roots and practice firmly grounded in the Ashtanga lineage, Jacquelyn's classes draw from the foundational principles of that practice but also incorporate the softer and therapeutic applications of yoga that she has absorbed through various trainings. Jacquelyn teaches with the intention to make yoga accessible to all people and to demystify the “secret language” of yoga. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of many of her teachers, Jacquelyn's approach to sharing yoga is nurturing, compassionate, and seasoned with a touch of humor. Jacquelyn also owns and manages Hudson Valley Wedding Yoga, which organizes yoga classes for weddings, bachelorette parties, and special events.Carisa Borrello is the director and owner of The Living Seed, which opened its doors to the Hudson Valley Community in the summer of 2000. Carisa is certified in Sivananda Yoga, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Tune Up®, completed the Forrest Yoga foundation course and two Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Ana Forrest, Gil Headly's 6 Day Human Dissection Workshop and is initiated into the path of Andean Mysticism with Elizabeth Jenkins and Don Juan Nunez Del Prado. She is a certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) from The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and a level 6 Student and level 1 Instructor of I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, a family style Kung Fu based on principles of Tai Chi and Zen philosophy. Carisa is eternally grateful for the devotion, wisdom and insight that all of her teachers and ancestors have shared with her. Their passion for their arts, for healing the human spirit and mending the hoop of the people are a daily inspiration. She is honored to practice and share the art of  Hanna Somatics, Yoga and the Internal Arts- they are gifts - bringing us back to ourselves so we can heal, love and grow to express our highest potential. Carisa creates a sanctuary, a sacred place for people to deepen their relationship to their spirits through movement, mindfulness, meditation and creative expression.Today these ladies share how and why they got into yoga, how they became yoga teachers and then eventually yoga studio owners. We checked in on how they are doing business now with COVID forcing the closing of their physical spaces. They are all offering classes virtually and in person outdoors with some on demand options at the Living Seed and The Yoga House. They of course also offer private sessions and if you were inspired by Carisa's sharing of Hanna Somatics, she is also doing private sessions outdoors at her home and her studio which for pain management and other needs. They happily share how yoga has changed their lives for the better and offer ways to stay connected to the present moment versus in fear or anxiety during these uncertain times we are all navigating.Because we broadcast out of Kingston, NY, I wanted to also recognize the other Kingston based studios, The Hot Spot offering outdoor and online classes, and Yoga Lab offering online classes.Today's show was engineered Nick Panken host of Freedom Highway from radiokingston.orgOur show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! Steve's practices of Yoga started much before he knew anything about, or had even ever seen any examples of Yoga poses. As a young teen with an extremely busy (and difficult to manage) mind, he was interested in gaining clarity of mind or accessing a space of his inner silence. Through being in nature (mostly skiing & snowboarding), and through music he was able to find some states of cohesion where the wildness of his mind was stilled momentarily and the body and mind could work together in unison; these forms of active meditation were a relief from the seemingly nonstop battle with the fluctuations of the mind.Seeking for a greater understanding of this inner space, he began studying Eastern philosophy at the age of 13 in the form of Buddhist teachings. When Yoga started to come into his life, he was drawn back to his early years reading Buddhist scriptures. He saw the same essence in the teachings of Yoga as he did in the Buddhist teachings. He continued his journey into Yoga but was inspired to make this his life path when he met his teacher, Dharma Mittra. Steve has completed Advanced- and Senior-level training with the living master Sri Dharma Mittra (500- and 800-hour trainings), as well as assisted at his teacher’s side. Since completion of his formal training, Steve has continued to study with his teacher, receiving countless hours of private instruction. Much like Dharma, he has been drawn towards being a teacher of teachers, having led over 20 Yoga Teacher Trainings and a number of continuing education programs in Yoga Nidra. In this episode, Yoga Is Vegan's Holly Skodis and Steve Fazarri discuss the following:Our relationship with social media and becoming mindful with technologyOur collective experiences with Sri Dharma Mittra. May 2019 marked the beginning year of the Yoga Is Vegan Podcast. In The Best Of: Part 1, Holly Skodis features excerpts from some of her favorite interviews this year. This is a great episode to listen to if you are new to the show or haven't quite yet listened to them all. Clearly there wasn't enough time to share as many as she would have liked. Stay tuned next week, for Part 2. Episodes featured in this episode: Joy Pierson and Bart Potenza are pioneers in the vegan restaurant business. They have been New York's staple for fine dining for over 16 years and their restaurants have included Candle 79, Candle Cafe West and Candle Cafe. Named by VegNews in 2019 as one of the top 20 most influential vegans in the world, she utilizes her degree in plant-based nutrition to inform her impassioned messages as an advocate on behalf of humans, planet earth and animals.Never one to shy away from facing staggering odds – just like she did in the Olympics while riding for Team USA, whose unlikely and triumphant story is chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold” – her latest initiative is founding the non-profit Switch4Good. Switch4Good launched in early 2018 with a television commercial featuring six Olympians from four different countries and proves that cow’s milk is not part of a high-performance diet. Yancy hopes that through the yoga practices and techniques you will not be bound by the body or the mind. “You are not your body, you are not your mind.” -Sri Dharma Mittra Here are Yancy's SHAIR Podcast interview highlights: Omar: Yancy, tell us a little bit about what's going on in your life today, your hobbies, exercise. Take us into your normal daily routine, including recovery. Yancy: My normal routine ... I wake up, have a little bit of coffee ... A little bit, not too much. I look at social media, like a couple of things, get that little bit of coffee in me. I do a meditative practice for about thirty, forty five minutes, which involves breathing exercises, chanting, and all sitting in a - if you understand, if you're a yogi - lotus position, which ... It's pretty intense. Once you get used to it, it's pretty good. After that, I go teach a class. I get on my little scooter, go by the beach, teach some yoga classes at the studios. In between classes, I'm either skating or messing around doing yoga on the beach. There's a skate park over there. I teach my last class and then I might take a class and then I bail and go back to Hollywood on the little scooter, go home, eat dinner. That's it. Simple. Omar: It sounds very simple. Now, how do you maintain your recovery program? Do you have a recovery program? Do you hit meetings? I mean, how is that integrated into your life? Yancy: I think my recovery is doing my meditations and my pranayama ... Man, I got hit hard when I was dabbling with stuff. Yeah, I stopped pretty cold, but there's always a little relapse here and there or not knowing, I suppose, what to do or how to do it. I was slow ... I got off hard drugs. I was still drinking here and there and so that took a little while. After I got the yoga ... Yoga is my recovery program. Just going to yoga. That's it. Omar: Well, I'll tell you one thing is for sure, when you're doing thirty to forty five minutes of meditation in lotus position every day, that's pretty intense. Yancy: Yeah. Now, it's pretty normal. Omar: I was just thinking about being in lotus position. First of all, I can't get into lotus position and then, even sitting with my legs crossed for more than five minutes becomes so, so uncomfortable. My wife's a yoga instructor. I get to watch her bend and fold and she makes it look so effortless. I commend you ... Yancy: Well, it took me three years of just sitting half lotus. Three years, man. Three years to sit in full lotus comfortable. Well, three years, so I've been sitting in lotus for three years to be very comfortable. Omar: Well, that's a testament to dedication, to patience. It comes when it comes. You just keep plugging away and plugging away and moving forward. You stay vigilant until it finally happens. That's a lot of what my wife tells me, too. She's just like, "Look, it doesn't matter how far you get. You're going to get a little bit further every day and your body will tell you. It'll help you along." I should probably do a little bit more of it, but I don't. I watch her do it and I could see how much she loves it. Omar: All right, so tell us when is your anniversary date and how long you have clean? Yancy: I have clean ... Man, it's been so long. Omar: Good. Awesome. Yancy: It's been a long time. I would say ... What year was the Northridge ... Do you remember that earthquake? Omar: That earthquake in Northridge? Dude. I mean, that's a long time. Yancy: Yeah. Omar: Man, maybe ... Is that over twenty years? Yancy: At Northridge, I was out of my mind crazy. A little bit after Northridge maybe ... Whatever that time is. Probably, I'd say, nineteen years clean ... Well, there's some relapses. There was some drinking, but hard drugs? Clean. Nineteen years pretty Sobi-Wan Kenobi. Omar: Well, it says here Northridge earthquake was in 1994. Yancy: I'd say I was clean about '95. Before that ... I grew up skateboarding in New York City, so there was a lot of corruption and I got roped in. It was out of control.

The practice of Dharma Yoga found Dani in 2010, and after her very first class, she began to immerse herself in it. She discovered, through heartfelt self-practice, that this lineage of yoga is an incredibly powerful tool for embodied empowerment and total transformation. After observing the way her life began to improve in every aspect through consistent practice, she naturally felt called to share this form of yoga with others. She participated in Sri Dharma Mittra's 200-hour “Life of a Yogi” teacher training program in June 2011 (completing her certification the following May), and she completed her 500-hour certification in May 2013. In August 2015 she completed Sri Dharma's advanced 800-hour training program.
