Dr Lisa Searle, Project Coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), discusses the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan amidst the war.

The decision by the US government to temporarily freeze funding to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) alongside all other foreign aid for at least 90 days has had immediate effects on people living with HIV according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The independent medical humanitarian organisation says although the US has since clarified that certain treatment programs can continue at least until April, it is still concerned that critical elements of the PEPFAR program remain frozen. President Donald Trump's administration announced the huge cuts while it undertakes a "review" to ensure they align with President Trump's priorities or agenda. Experts in global health have been expressing their dismay and concern over the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which distributes tens of billions of dollars' worth of overseas aid every year. On THURSDAY , A federal judge ordered Donald Trump's administration to temporarily lift the funding freeze and has set a five-day deadline for the administration to prove it is complying. Since 2018, Jérôme Tubiana has been working as an operational adviser and advocacy manager with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), focusing on refugee and migration issues. This included advocating for Out of Libya's initiative aiming at opening safe and legal pathways for migrants and refugees stranded in Libya, and systematically victims of abuses, which the United Nations have qualified as “crimes against humanity”. Prior to this, Jérôme worked as a researcher specializing in conflicts and migration across the Sahara and Horn of Africa, in particular in Sudan, including for MSF and other humanitarian NGOs, human rights organizations, the International Crisis Group, the Clingendael Institute and other think tanks, as well as the UN Security Council Panel of Experts on the Sudan and the African Union–United Nations Joint Mediation Support Team on Darfur. In addition to various reports, he is the author of several books including Chroniques du Darfour (on the war in Darfur, Glénat, 2010) and the award-winning graphic novel Guantánamo Kid (the true story of Guantánamo's youngest prisoner, SelfMadeHero/Abrams, 2019). His articles have appeared in the New York Review of Books, the London Review of Books, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, The Nation, The Baffler, Le Monde diplomatique and XXI.

Wounds of War: Narrating Health and Healing is the third conversation in a series centering the Warscapes anthology Insurgent Feminisms: Writing War (Daraja Press). Featuring Zahra Moloo, Valerie Gruhn and Danielle Villasana. War brings the experiences and stories of health, health workers and emergency medicine into sharp focus. When one speaks about the horrors of war, it is primarily a reference to the vulnerability of bodies that are being deliberately targeted for harm irrespective of whether these are civilians or military personnel. Legal frameworks exist to protect health workers and hospitals, and to prioritize the rights of the wounded and sick no matter what side of the hostilities they may be on. Yet, attacks on health workers and the destruction of hospitals make the practice of care incredibly difficult and only exacerbate precarity. Even outside of the space of the war zone, the practice of health and healing can be a fraught and embattled world where marginalized populations navigate hostile and unjust societal structures that are not designed to provide them with equitable care. This discussion explore the complex ways in which these experiences can be written about by addressing their own positionality as women and as insiders/outsiders, the challenges of bearing witness, and the traumas that arise from doing this work. Zahra Moloo is a Kenyan investigative journalist, researcher, and documentary filmmaker. Her work focuses on biodiversity, the extractive industries and neoliberalism in Africa. She has published in Al Jazeera, BBC Focus on Africa, Jacobin, Africa is a Country, Project Syndicate, Warscapes magazine, IRIN News, and in the collection Against Colonization and Rural Dispossession (Zed Books, 2017). She currently works for the ETC Group and is directing a documentary on conservation in Central Africa. She holds a BA in History and Development Studies from McGill University and an MA in Broadcast Journalism from City University in London.Valérie Gruhn is a clinician, humanitarian, public health specialist, and author with over a decade of experience in global health and humanitarian response. She began her career as a registered nurse. Valérie's humanitarian work spans continents, with significant contributions in the Middle East, East and Central Africa, and beyond. She has worked with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Iraq during the Mosul Battle, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during the Ebola Outbreak, and in Chad, addressing nutrition and refugee emergencies, as well as in projects in Kenya and Yemen. Additionally, Valérie has contributed as an assistant researcher on projects investigating human rights violations during the Syrian War. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she played a pivotal role in the response in New York City. Her writings have been featured in various online magazines, and her piece "Mosul Journal" was notably selected for inclusion in the book compilation Insurgent Feminisms: Writing War. Her expertise and insights have been shared on platforms such as the Council on Foreign Relations and France-Atlanta. Valérie is dedicated to amplifying the voices of vulnerable populations through her advocacy and firsthand experiences. Danielle Villasana is an independent photojournalist whose documentary work focuses on human rights, women, identity, displacement, and health around the world. Her work has been included in solo and group exhibits and has been published in The New York Times, National Geographic, and The Washington Post, among others. She contributes to Redux and is a member of the groups Women Photograph and Diversify Photo. Her first photo book, A Light Inside, was published in 2018 by FotoEvidence. More than 14,000 people there have been killed, 8 million have been displaced, and some 25 million are in dire need of humanitarian aid as the health system crumbles. As famine conditions hit Gaza, we chat to Médecins Sans Frontières about the continuing humanitarian crisis. Speaking to Pat this morning was Camille Niel, Deputy Head of Mission for Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

One of my favourtite episodes, talking to Kristine was incredible. What a woman. Working with some of the highest risk women in the world in refugee camps amongst other very low/impoverished places where c-section rates are only 5% and the whole scope of midwifery care is used. Whilst she is also a registered midwife, former traditional midwife, in the United States where she recently supported her approx. 10th set of triplets at home. The Sudan conflict began over a month ago, and the consequences for the population are getting more and more serious. In this episode we take a long hard look at the conflict in Sudan, and what the UN and humanitarian agencies here in Geneva – the ones whose very purpose is to either prevent such conflicts happening, or at the very least help ease the suffering – can actually do. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have been operating in Sudan for decades and Vittorio Oppizzi, the project coordinator in Sudan, says that this conflict "adds on a situation that was already critical." Another member of MSF, Melat Haile, says that "it's the poor, the innocent, the medical people who will suffer from this." She explains that in 2022 alone, they conducted more than half a million medical consultations, "and now the need is going to be much more." Then what can be done about this situation? In episode 207 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on keeping it simple, ignorant criticism, lack of empathy, and not placing your agendas on others. Plus this week photographer Ian Brown takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Ian Brown is an award winning photographer whose work focuses on the human condition. Brown grew up dividing his time between the urban landscape and time in the highlands of Northern Ontario. He survived cancer at the age of 19, a heart attack at age 32 and being shot at in the middle of a civil war in Colombia while on assignment for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) documenting conditions in the remote Darrien jungle region a body of work that later went on to become the international exhibition Lost between River and Sky. His work includes projects documenting HIV survivors in Malawi, Africa; a continuing documentary series on the Opioid epidemic and a long term study on the urban anthropology of Detroit. This project, Prairie and Pavement was one of the featured exhibitions at the 2014 Scotiabank Photography Festival in Toronto. For his major portrait body of work American Dreams Brown traveled over 80,000 miles and to all fifty states over the course of twelve years photographing people and asking them to write down in their own handwriting their ideas on America and the concept of the 'American Dream'. This work was published in September 2020. Anika is also an academic and attends her local high school as well as Santa Barbara City College, with hopes of getting degrees in both film and English. Anika prioritizes diverse representation, and believes that everyone has a story worth telling. Host Ladybird Morgan, RN, MSW Ladybird is program director and co-founder of the Humane Prison Hospice Project, and has been working in end-of-life care as a registered nurse, clinical social worker, and educator for 20+ years. She has worked with organizations including The Zen Hospice Project and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Ladybird has guided medical practitioners, families and private caregivers to find their clearest voice as they step across significant thresholds in life and in preparing for death. As Accreditation Coordinator, he also led the process to establish Bloomfield as New Jersey's first nationally accredited health department, from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB), a joint initiative of the CDC and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to advance quality and performance of all US public health departments. An integral part of this process was the development of a comprehensive Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), which Michael managed. He's the recipient of the Montclair State University George G. King Memorial Award for improving the health of the community through leadership and collaboration. He has served as a mentor/internship supervisor for several physicians (including 2 Fulbright Scholars) pursuing their MPH degrees. Michael has also served on the Board of Directors and Board of Commissioners of the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) and is one of the past planners for the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) Annual Public Health Conference.   Most recently, Michael has been performing HACCP-based food safety and sanitation inspections, infection control consulting, outbreak investigations, and Occupational Health & Safety (OSHA) Audits, and health education for Fortune 500 Companies, Top-Tier Law Firms, Private Schools, and Hospitals in the NYC Metro area. He's currently developing Infection Control and Prevention protocols and providing Health Education services (including Social Determinants of Health and Trauma Informed Care) for the City of New York COVID-19 Hotel Program, working closely with the CDC, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and NYC Health + Hospitals.   Michael is also an adjunct professor for Southern New Hampshire University where he teaches various public health courses.

She has worked with many organizations including The Zen Hospice Project, Hospice By The Bay, Marin General Hospital and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). At Commonweal, Ladybird supports the work of various projects including the Cancer Help Program and Healing Circles. Sandra Fish Also a co-founder of the Humane Prison Hospice Project, Sandra is an actor, writer, and caregiver, with decades of passion for prison reform and end of life support. She taught in Riker’s Island Prison, worked as an employment specialist for newly released prisoners in Manhattan, attended ex-prisoner support groups, sat in on parole hearings, and visited SingSing to observe classrooms there. Today (Thursday) is World Refugee Day. Aid organisation Doctors Without Borders (MSF) says there are now over 70 million people forced out of their homes around the world-more than at any time in modern history. The organisation says these are people who have fled extreme danger including relentless bombing, gang violence and other life-threatening circumstances. South Africa has become the first country in the world to replace an inject-able drug with toxic side effects, with a new oral medicine in the standard multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has applauded the department of health following the announcement, saying this is a positive step aimed at making MDR-TB treatment more tolerable. Dr. Joanne Liu is the International President of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), otherwise known as Doctors without Borders. She is a Canadian Pediatrician by training and has been with MSF for almost her entire career. She became the international head of MSF in 2013.   We spoke not long after she visited MSF's operations in a stretch of land in Bangladesh called Cox's Bazar. This is where hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees have fled from neighboring Myanmar in recent months and it is the site of one of the world's most urgent global humanitarian emergencies. Dr. Liu discusses the conditions there--and the kind of unique medical needs that stem from having such a massive population displacement in such a short period of time.    We also discuss MSF's history--including how it gained a reputation as one of the more fearless global humanitarian organizations. Humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders (MSF) says medical facilities have become the front line in conflict zones such Syria Afghanistan and South Sudan. The organisation says two years after the bombing of one of their hospitals by the US army in Afghanistan, medical facilities are no longer safe places where civilians can go for aid and lifesaving medical care. Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to MSF's Senior Humanitarian Policy Advisor Jens Pederson who has worked with the organisation in the Central Arican Republic, South Sudan, Sudan and Sierra Leone.

Earlier this year, paediatric nurse Johanna Bosowski embarked on her first mission with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to Agok, in northern South Sudan. Working on the neonatal ward, she encountered a young patient with a disease she had never seen in the UK before. In most developed countries, thanks to a vaccine, cases of tetanus are extremely rare. But, in 2013 (the latest year for which estimates are available), it still killed roughly 59,000 people around the world - many of whom wouldn’t have had access to the vaccine. Bob Baxt is a surgeon who spends most of his time these days out of the country. He works with civilian humanitarian medical services like Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the former hospital ship Hope.  He's spent a lot of time in Africa and has seen what is actually going on there.  Bob states at the outset of the interview that his views are his and do not represent the views of any government or any organization he has worked with.  But he says we're trying so hard in this country to help the people in war-torn countries, but we can never understand what is going on there unless you understand the tribal system that they have used as their form of government for eons.  The concept of a centralized government isn't even in their consciousness, yet that's what we keep trying to get them to use.  Bob also steps back some and gives us a brief history of how things got the way they are in Africa.With the dangers involved, the lack of supplies and sterility, why do Bob and others like him keep going back?  Listen and you'll know.
