Chris does love a good car movie, though whether this one hits that description is up for debate. This week's movie is Gone in Sixty Seconds from the year 2000.Gone in Sixty Seconds was a high-octane production that aimed to modernize the 1974 cult classic while capitalizing on Hollywood's growing appetite for stylish car heist films. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film assembled a star-studded cast led by Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Robert Duvall, with Dominic Sena directing. Unlike the original's more guerilla-style filmmaking, the remake had the full backing of a major studio, leading to a more polished but equally adrenaline-fueled experience. Cage, ever the committed performer, insisted on doing many of his own driving stunts, and the production featured over 50 high-end vehicles, including the now-iconic Shelby GT500 “Eleanor.” The film's vehicular action sequences were a mix of practical stunts and CGI enhancements, though efforts were made to keep the high-speed chases feeling raw and authentic.Filming took place primarily in Los Angeles, with key sequences shot in Long Beach, including the climactic jump scene. The production team worked closely with car manufacturers and stunt coordinators to ensure the film delivered on its promise of thrilling, realistic chase scenes. However, some logistical challenges arose, including securing permits for large-scale stunts in heavily trafficked urban areas. The film's heavy use of practical effects and real car chases set it apart from other CGI-laden action films of the era, maintaining a grounded feel. While Gone in Sixty Seconds received mixed reviews from critics, who found the plot formulaic, audiences embraced its stylish action and high-energy spectacle, propelling it to a solid box office performance and cementing its place as a staple of early 2000s action cinema. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where time is running out and the stakes have never been higher, one man must do the impossible. Nicolas Cage is Memphis Raines, a legendary car thief dragged back into the game for one last job. With his brother's life on the line and a ruthless crime boss breathing down his neck, he has just 72 hours to steal 50 exotic cars—or face the ultimate price. But standing in his way is a relentless detective, a crew of misfit wheelmen, and the one car that has always eluded him: the infamous Eleanor. High-speed chases, impossible escapes, and engines roaring, Gone in Sixty Seconds proves that fast is never fast enough.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

'Brilliantly Insane' is a show that will be dedicated to the career and films of Nicolas Cage. One of the greatest living actors and eccentric individuals, his career has spanned 40 years and over 100 films credits and counting. We'll be covering a different movie or two from his expansive filmography in every episode. For Episode #4 we're talking about the action packed 2000 release "GONE IN 60 SECONDS" directed by Dominic Sena. It stars Cage, Angelina Jolie, Will Patton, Robert Duvall, Giovanni Ribisi, Vinnie Jones, Timothy Olyphant, Delroy Lindo, and more! It's a remake of the original 1974 classic of the same name where retired car thief Memphis Raines must get back into the game and steal 50 cars in one night to save his little brother. Nothing is as simple as getting the band back together but it is a LOT of fun for those who enjoy car chase flicks and high octane action. Join hosts Rook Medrano and Cameron Scott from the show 'Take Out Edition' as they talk shop about one of their favorite Cage films! "Control, vision, determination. These are the three fundamental components of the new generation race car driver. Speed is a byproduct. Going fast. But remember: The car is you, you are the car. Okay? Let's ride!"

Let's ride! This week on Scene Stealers we are riding shotgun with Memphis Raines and the rest of the crew for Gone in 60 Seconds. For The Vault we are talking about new movies and getting into the spirit of scary movie season. Leo talks about the newest Stephen King adaptation with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines and Charles is talking about new chum in The Meg 2: The Trench. The Main Take is Dominic Sena's remake of Gone in 60 Seconds, which is our 2nd Nicolas Cage heist movie, and a heist movie that plays the hits. The conversation is a lot of fun, talking about the reality of stealing 50 cars in 24 hours, a crew that features Angelina Jolie & Robert Duval, and making the car become an extension of the driver. At Scene Stealers, we're a little tired, a little wired, and we think we deserve a little appreciation!

Are you searching for that special movie that openly invites you to log on, hack in, go anywhere, and steal everything? Then baby, you're in the right place because our latest episode has us gone in 60 mbps with Swordfish, the slick action thriller that once again challenged our assumptions on the lengths to which John Travolta would go to further embarrass himself. But before we jack into this wannabe Matrix...this week's Blue Plate Special finds us loving John Sayles's 1987 union masterpiece Matewan, waxing nostalgically at the 2000 Disney Channel original movie Phantom of the Megaplex, and taking issue with the very existence of the deeply stupid 2000 mob "comedy" The Crew. Speaking of questionable cinema from the early 00s, our discussion and commentary of Swordfish parses what exactly such a work is attempting to posit on a moral or ethical level, evaluates the extent to which this movie's premise and stylings ape a post-Tarantino cinematic philosophy, and assess the extent to which it's the least bit justifiable to fashion a movie about terrorism on the eve of 9/11 as smugly entertaining as this. Come for the pretentious monologues on the unreality of the opening moments of the 21st century, stay for the latest inductee of Overlapping Dialogue's Hall of Fame (the Immune) and a special announcement at the episode's conclusion about a very brief but special upcoming series of episodes we have in store... What did action movies look like in that small sliver of time between the dawn of the millennium and the events of 9/11? In our first 2000s miniseries, we'll be looking back at what genre filmmaking looked like before and after September 11th. Today, we'll be joined by podcast regular Nick Laskin to discuss a pair of early aughts action flicks from Bruckheimer protege and music video maverick, Dominic Sena: the 2000 remake of "Gone in 60 Seconds" starring Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, and Robert Duvall, as well as the 2001 techno thriller "Swordfish," starring Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and John Travolta with blonde streaks and a landing strip goatee. Did these two moderately successful summer action flicks mark the end of an era? Why is "Swordfish" more famous for a 3 second shot of Halle Berry's tits when there's an entire scene devoted to Hugh Jackman getting a blowjob with a gun to his head while he hacks the Department of Defense? Was Timothy Olyphant the low-key MVP of the early 2000s? And most importantly, how many closeted Paul Oakenfold fans walk amongst us? "Gone in 60 Seconds" is streaming with ads on Tubi and "Swordfish" is streaming on Netflix!
What if John Travolta made you hack the US government while a goon hold a gun to your head and you got a blowjob? Then you'd probably be Hugh Jackman in Swordfish, Dominic Sena's *other* masterpiece!
It's all about family this week, as we boost some cars, deal with the realities of naming a character Freb, marvel at bizarre set design, contrived heroin subplots and whatever that thing is on Angelina Jolie's head - it's Gone in Sixty Seconds, and it whips.
For this week's decidedly strange double feature, YouTube video essayist extraordinaire Patrick H. Willems hops into the driver's seat as we gawk at the baffling combination of Swordfish and 2003's Christmas Carol: The Movie! First, we put on our wraparound sunglasses and low-rise jeans to time-warp back to the gossamer pre-9/11 months of 2001, where the world was still riding high from Matrix fever and Dominic Sena tried to hop on that bandwagon with the ridiculous hacker-action-thriller Swordfish. It's the high-octane tale of a down-on-his-luck, incredibly handsome hacker (Hugh Jackman) roped into a criminal scheme by an over the top mastermind (John Travolta, slapping his Vincent Vega mullet back on and adding a landing strip) and his mysterious femme fatale (Halle Berry, whose topless scene was basically the main draw for horny teens). You know, cinema! Then we've got a dinky, low-stakes animated version of A Christmas Carol from the director of When the Wind Blows, a perfunctory retelling that mostly serves as an excuse for Nic Cage to show up for four minutes as Jacob Marley (sporting zero charisma and zero British accent). Which one is more bizarrely interesting? Which one do we have more to talk about? Which one has a more accurate depiction of the world of computer hacking? Listen and find out! This week, the realms of Travolta and Cage come perilously close to merging, as our double feature covers films directed by fillmmakers who either have or will directed the other! In The General’s Daughter, we’ve got a steamy, somewhat dated legal thriller/airport potboiler courtesy of Con Air director Simon West, in which a warrant officer (John Travolta) investigates the rape and murder of a young female captain on a Georgia army base. On the other, deliberately dumber side of the coin, we’ve got Gone in 60 Seconds, the Dominic Sena-directed car-heist remake starring Nic Cage as the leather-clad, “Low Rider”-jamming gentleman thief “Memphis” Raines. It came out a year before The Fast & The Furious, but it’s got a lot of neon-soaked machismo under its hood, alongside some neat turns from the typical Bruckheimer stable of too-good-for-this-actors (Angelina Jolie, Robert Duvall, Delroy Lindo). But does its goofiness hold up for two entire hours? Luckily, we’ve got a character witness in the passenger’s seatl, in the form of screenwriter extraordinaire (and scribe of the upcoming Face/Off sequel!) Simon Barrett! Together, the three of us discuss the shortcomings of women-in-the-military dramas, Nic Cage’s budding association with muscle cars, and much more. Music videos play a huge part in introducing dance to the screen. From MTV, commercials, and nowadays, YouTube premieres-- almost everyone has experienced a form of dance on screen through a widely known musical artist. As we discuss our three dance-centric music video picks, we come to realize that music videos are a commercialized version of experimental cinema.Behind the celebrity glamour and performance, there is a pure delivery of contrasting jump cuts, metaphorical imagery, and occasionally, non-traditional storytelling -- in this case, the dancing tells the story.--Topic FilmsRhythm Nation - Janet Jackson (1989)Dir. Paul Cameron, ASC got his start guerilla-shooting live music with borrowed equipment from film school. Starting off in the budding world of music videos and fast-paced commercials creatively prepared Paul for the action/thriller genre. Paul met cinematographer-turned-director Dominic Sena, who gave him the opportunity to shoot Paul's first feature, Gone in 60 Seconds. They were able to collaborate and communicate with a shared visual language. Later, Paul's work on the film Man on Fire with director Tony Scott allowed him to really hone his look. Though he prefers to use film cameras, Paul had the opportunity to shoot Michael Mann's Collateral with digital cameras, one of the first major films to use the technology. Jonathan Nolan, the director and producer of the HBO series, Westworld, asked Paul to shoot the pilot before there was even a script. They quickly decided to shoot on 35 mm to capture the grand scale of the western landscape. For season three of Westworld, Paul was the director of photography for the first episode, and has earned an Emmy nomination for his work. He also had the opportunity to direct episode four of the series for the very first time and really enjoyed it. Westworld will return for Season 4. It’s our second Cagetastic installment of the SUMMER OF CAGE and boy is it a testosterone filled one. For our 12th episode we explore some of Mr. Cage’s fuel injected flicks with a “Fast & The Furious” themed double feature. Up first is the summer block buster heist movie that inspired aspects of the Grand Theft Auto video game series and had us all exclaiming “Ok, let’s ride” before we went cruising. Nic plays professional car thief, Memphis Rains in Dominic Sena’s Gone In 60 Seconds (2000). On deck in our second feature Nicolas Cage plays John Milton, a criminal hellbent on getting revenge for crimes committed against his family by a Satanic Cult who’ve taken his granddaughter hostage. With the help of a foul mouthed, ass kicking sexpot and her bad ass muscle car they fuck shit up in Patrick Lussier’s action flick Drive Angry (2011). Along the way we also discuss the glaring flaws with Anchor’s app, Joel Schumacher’s death, movie roles Mr. Cage has turned down over the years, stereotypes & cultural appropriation in films and the sexual magnetism of the dead. The outlaw journey of THELMA AND LOUISE was fresh in 1991, yet is still remarkably relevant almost 30 years later. Both visually stunning and packed with symbolism, this film was unafraid to focus on female friendship with a feminist backbone, along with the female experience in an unsupportive world. Beautifully crafted and atmospheric, THELMA AND LOUISE remains eerily timely and believable, while being empowering and forever iconic. ▶️Synopsis: Two best friends set out for a weekend road trip, which quickly turns into numerous unforeseen events snowballing into an ultimate, life-altering resolution. ⏩⏩Discussions include: First-time screenwriter Callie Khouri’s path to creating THELMA AND LOUISE; director Ridley Scott’s stylized grit and aesthetics; the film’s initial release, surrounding controversy and what it meant for women in film; the cast and evolving character breakdowns; how humor and plots devices interact with the film’s narrative; personal thoughts on the actual vs. alternate endings, along with fun facts sprinkled all throughout. **Starring Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Keitel, Brad Pitt. Nic Cage looking like an older, cooler Chad Kroeger! Ron Perlman sucking up all the air in the room with his gigantic head! Christopher Lee being awesome and sporting gruesome plague makeup!

Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie in a car heist movie? How can that NOT be exciting? That's what we asked ourselves going into Gone in 60 Seconds (2000). Unfortunately, we found ourselves BORED OUT OF OUR MINDS. I mean, we hoped our first Nicolas Cage movie would be chock full of Cage insanity, but unfortunately we had to slog through this boring, lazy heist movie. Where did this film go wrong? Everything that could be a draw — Cage, Jolie, cars, car chases, shoot outs — was in short supply. Instead you get a lot of setup for an underwhelming climax. Directed by Dominic Sena, Gone in 60 Seconds was rated 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nic Cage makes his first (but almost definitely not last) appearance on How Did This Get Made with Season of the Witch, a psuedo-religious buddy movie set during the black plague. Chris Hardwick joins the HDTGM crew to experience the inconsistent accents and sub-par CGI that famed director Dominic Sena cultivated in this cinematic gem. They pitch some alternate endings, delve into the subtle differences between witches and demons, and ask the all important question: How many women were killed during the crusades? Keep leaving us your suggestions and tell us what you thought of this chain-mesh disaster!
