This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Five Times The Oscars Made History,” January 20, 2017, www.nyfa.edu; “Hollywood History: How World War II Forced the Academy to Rethink the 1942 Oscars,” April 16, 2021, Entertainment Weekly; “Charlie Chaplin vs. America Explores the Accusations that Sent a Star Into Exile,” October 24, 2023, byTerry Gross, www.npr.com; “The Most Memorable Oscar Speeches in Oscar History,” March 6, 2024, by Shannon Carlin, www.time.com;   Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; www.Oscars.org; Movies Mentioned:  Stella Dallas (1938), starring Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, & Alan Hale; Gone With The Wind (1939), starring Vivian Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Butterfly McQueen, Thomas Mitchell, & Barbara O'Neil; How Green Was My Valley (1941), starring Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, & Donald Crisp; Sergeant York (1941), starring Gary Cooper, Joan Leslie, & Walter Brennan;  The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), staring Jean Arthur Robert Cummings, & Charle Coburn; Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), starring Robert Montgomery, Claude Rains, & Evelyn Keyes; Ball of Fire (1942), starring Barbara Stanwyck & Cary Cooper; Double Indemnity (1944), starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray & Edward G Robinson; Key Largo (1948); starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G Robinson, Claire Trevor, & Lionel Barrymore; All The King's Men (1948), starring Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, Joanne Dru, & Mercedes McCambridge; Pinky (1949), starring Jeanne Crain, Ethel Waters, Ethel Barrymore, Nina Mae McKinney, & Wiliam Lundigan; Marty (1955); starring Ernest Borgnine. Episode 261 features Bill Mikita, Hollywood writer and film producer and Mike McCloud, creator of the World Food Championships. Bill Mikita is the writer and producer of the movie, Chasing 3000.  The movie is based on the true story of Bill and his brother's cross country trip to see Roberto Clemente get his 3,000th base hit.  The story of how this career lawyer became a Hollywood writer and film producer and was able to get Ray Liotta, among other celebrities to star in the movie is fascinating.  Some of those other celebrities include, Lauren Holly, M. Emmet Walsh, Lori Petty, Keith David, Trevor Morgan, Rory Culkin, Tania Raymonde, Seymour Cassel, and Willa Holland.  Bill gives us an inside look at the making of the film which, in its final form seemed improbable, but Bill persevered and the result is a wonderful movie.  Bill discusses his next project which is based on an amazing baseball game between two unbelievable teams and is a story you will not want to miss. Mike McCloud is focused on making Food Sport a long-term, fun-filled legacy for the culinary industry.  As the creator of the World Food Championships he appears to be on his way to doing that.  The first WFC competition was in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2012 where almost 300 culinary champions gathered to compete.  The event was filmed in 2013 for a reality show that aired 2014 on A&E's FYI Channel. WFC's 2014 competition grew 35% and culminated in the first $100,000 grand prize. In early 2016, WFC debuted its second television show on the Discovery Network and is now syndicated in 10 countries.  Fast forward to 2022 when the WFC celebrated its 10th anniversary and the brand achieved a record-setting media reach of more than 6 billion and the WFC's appeal continues to grow.   We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Hello everyone, today I talk about the 1986 vigilante action film Eye of the Tiger After serving time in prison, Buck Matthews (Gary Busey), a Vietnam War veteran, returns to his hometown to start his life over with his wife Christie (Denise Galik) and their five-year-old daughter Jennifer (Judith Barsi). He learns that the small town where he grew up is overrun by a large motorcycle gang that rides through the town in large numbers, harassing various citizens. On his first night back at his old job at a construction yard, Buck hears a woman screaming in the distance. He follows the screams to discover a large group of bikers attacking and attempting to rape a local nurse. Buck manages to chase the gang off using his truck, saving the nurse. The leader of the biker gang, Blade (William Smith), takes Buck's actions personally and begins to terrorize Buck and his family. The gang attacks the Matthews' home, beating Buck and killing his wife. This leaves Jennifer, his young daughter, in shock, as she witnesses the entire event. The local sheriff (Seymour Cassel) refuses to help Buck, leaving him with no other option but to take justice into his own hands. Buck then calls in a favor from Jamie (Jorge Gil), a friend from prison. Jamie is a Miami-based Colombian drug kingpin whom Buck saved during a prison riot, and who was also paroled with Buck in the opening scene. Buck receives a high-tech truck, equipped with machine guns and mortars. Buck's friend, J.B. Deveraux (Yaphet Kotto), a local deputy who fought alongside Buck in Vietnam, provides Buck with a history of the motorcycle gang. The sheriff is shown to be colluding with the motorcycle gang as Blade and his men give the sheriff bribes of cash to ignore their activities.Buck and J.B. begin to retaliate against the bikers through various means. Buck uses a wire to string out onto a road to decapitate at least two of the bikers. He lures another small group to their deaths by exploding his old truck when they attack it. He shoots other gang members whom they have seen committing crimes in and around the town.Eventually, the bikers kidnap Buck's daughter Jennifer from the hospital, forcing Buck to go to their camp in the desert outside of town. With the help of J.B., flying a bomb-dropping crop duster airplane, Buck successfully defeats the gang and rescues his daughter. The sheriff tries to have Buck arrested, but the deputies, having enough of his corruption, rebel against him and willingly let Buck deal with him. In an explosive climax, Buck has the local sheriff killed (the sheriff seems to have framed Buck for a murder committed years earlier) by offering him as a target for the gang, and then has a one-on-one fistfight with Blade, which ends with the death of the villain when he accidentally ingests cocaine the gang is manufacturing. With their leader dead, the surviving motorcycle gang members ride away. Buck catches up with J.B. and the other deputies and they celebrate their victory for saving the town.Social Media Links:Twitch: TTVGervais - TwitchYouTube: Youtube.com/@GervaisDemonSteven Gervais (@gervaisdemon) | TikTokSteven Gervais (@ttvgervaisdemon) • Instagram photos and videosGervaisDemon (@TTVGervaisDemon) / X (twitter.com)

Joined once again by Mike Rodmaker, we discuss his bananas early life before acting, how his career exploded pairing with Cassevettes, how things might have changed if he was cast in Reservoir Dogs, our many opinions on films like Johnny Be Goode & Bartleby, and crush over his love for independent film. How does he rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

Our miniseries on the 1980s movies of director Martha Coolidge ends with a look back at her 1988 film Plain Clothes. ----more---- TRANSCRIPT   From Los Angeles, California, the Entertainment Capital of the World, it's The 80s Movies Podcast. I am your host, Edward Havens. Thank you for listening today.   On this episode, we're going to complete our miniseries on the 1980s films of director Martha Coolidge with her little seen 1988 movie Plain Clothes.   When we last left Ms. Coolidge, she had just seen her 1985 film Real Genius get lost in the mix between a number of similarly themed movies, although it would eventually find its audience through home video and repeated cable airings throughout the rest of the decade.   Shortly after the release of Real Genius, she would pick out her next project, a comedy mystery called Glory Days. Written by Dan Vining, Glory Days was one of a number of television and movie scripts floating around Hollywood that featured a supposedly young looking cop who goes undercover as a student at a high school. Whatever Coolidge saw in it, she would quickly get to work making it her own, hiring a young writer working at Paramount Studios named A. Scott Frank to help her rewrite the script. Coolidge had been impressed by one of his screenplays, a Neo-noir romantic mystery thriller called Dead Again, and felt Frank was the right person to help her add some extra mystery to the Glory Days screenplay.     While Frank and Coolidge would keep some elements of the original Glory Days script, including having the undercover cop's high school identity, Nick Springsteen, be a distant relative of the famous rock star from whose song the script had taken its title. But Coolidge would have Frank add a younger brother for the cop, and add a murdered teacher, who the younger brother is accused of killing, to give the film something extra to work towards.   For the cast, Coolidge would go with a mix of newcomers in the main roles, with some industry veterans to fill out the supporting cast.   When casting began in early 1987, Coolidge looked at dozens of actors for the lead role of Nick Dunbar, but she was particularly struck by thirty-two year old Arliss Howard, whose film work had been limited to supporting roles in two movies, but was expected to become a star once his role in Stanley Kubrick's next project, Full Metal Jacket, opened later in the summer.   Twenty-five year old Suzy Amis, a former model who, like Arlisss, had limited film work in supporting roles, would be cast as Robin, a teacher at the school who Nick develops a crush on while undercover.   The supporting cast would include George Wendt from Cheers, Laura Dern's mother Diane Ladd, an Oscar nominee for her role as Flo in Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, veteran character actor Seymour Cassel, an Oscar nominee himself for John Cassavetes' Faces, Robert Stack, the original Elliot Ness who was yet another former Oscar nominee, Harry Shearer, and the great Abe Vigoda.   The $7.5m film would begin production in the Seattle metro area on May 6th, 1987 and would last for seven weeks, ending on June 30th.    Plain Clothes would open in 193 theatres on April 15th, 1988, including 59 theatres in New York City and eight in Seattle. The reviews would be vicious on the film, with many critics pointing out how ludicrous the plot was, and how distracting it was the filmmakers were trying to pass a thirty two year old actor off as a twenty four year old police officer going undercover as an eighteen year old high school student. Audiences would stay away in droves, with only about 57k people buying a ticket to see the film during the opening three days. A performance so bad, Paramount would end up pulling the film from theatres after seven days at a $289k ticket gross, replacing every screen with another high school-set movie, the similarly-titled Permanent Record, featuring Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Rubin and Kathy Baker, which would also be the final film for Martha Coolidge's regular co-star Michelle Meyrink, who would quit acting the following year and develop an affinity in Zen Buddhism. She would eventually open her own acting studio in her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia. Not so coincidentally, Martha Coolidge is one of advisory board members of the school.   There would be one more movie for Martha Coolidge in the 1980s, a made for television mystery called Trenchcoat in Paradise, featuring Dirk Benedict from Battlestar Galactica and The A-Team, Catherine Oxenberg from Dynasty, and Bruce Dern, but it's not very good and not really work talking about.   As the 80s moved into the 90s, Coolidge would continue to work both in television and in motion pictures.    In 1991, she would direct her Plain Clothes co-star Diane Ladd alongside Ladd's daughter, Laura Dern, in the Depression-era drama Rambling Rose. But despite unanimous critical consent and Oscar nominations for both Ladd and Dern, the first and only mother-daughter duo to be nominated for the same movie or in the same year, the $7.5m movie would only gross $6.3m.   1993's Lost in Yonkers would be the 23rd film written by Neil Simon, an adaptation of his 1991 Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Actors Irene Worth and Mercedes Ruehl would reprise their Broadway roles for the film, although Richard Dreyfuss would replace Kevin Spacey in the pivotal role as the gangster uncle of two teenage boys who go to live with their aunt after their mother dies. Despite good reviews, the $15m Lost in Yonkers would only gross about $9m.   Originally written as a starring vehicle for Madonna, the 1994 romantic-comedy Angie would instead star Geena Davis as an office worker in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, who sets her neighborhood upside-down when she decides to become a single mother. Coolidge's highest budgeted film at $26m, Angie would gross just $9.4m, but would in the years to come become famous for being the first film of James Gandolfini, Michael Rispoli and Aida Turturro, who would all go on to star in five years later.   1995's Three Wishes is a bizarre fantasy drama with Patrick Swayze and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, about two young boys whose mother starts to fall for a mysterious stranger after their father is reported missing during the Korean War. The $10m film would be the worst reviewed movie of Coolidge's career, and would barely gross $7m when it was released.   Things would turn around for Coolidge on her next film, Out to Sea. The penultimate film for both Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, this weak but genial romp, according to Janet Maslin of the New York Times, finds the regular co-stars on a Mexico-bound cruise ship, where they must work as dance hosts in order to pay for their trip. Also featuring Golden Girls co-stars Estelle Harris and Rue McClanahan alongside Dyan Cannon and Donald O'Connor, Out to Sea would become her highest grossing film to date, bringing in $29m worth of ticket sales.   While she would make a couple more movies, 2004's The Prince and Me and 2006's Material Girls, Coolidge would spend 1999 and the 2000s making her mark on television, directing episodes of CSI, Madame Secretary, Psych and Weeds, amongst dozens of shows, as well as the 1999 HBO film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, which would not only win its lead star Halle Berry a number of awards including the Emmy, the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award, it would be the first screenplay to be produced by a young writer named Shonda Rhimes. Coolidge herself would be nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Outstanding Directing of a Movie Made for Television.   But her biggest achievement in Hollywood would come in 2002, when Coolidge would become the first female President of the Directors Guild of America. And in addition to being an advisor to Michelle Meyrink's acting school, she is also a professor of film studies at Chapman University in Southern California.   Thank you for joining us. You are in for a treat today. We have legendary 80's action director Sam Firstenberg. At a young age Sam began to "create" movies to entertain his friends. Horrifying his mother, he would cut up books, stringing together the pictures and rolling them up. He would then put the roll into a box with a cut out window, shine a flashlight from behind, and manually pull the roll, revealing the pictures through the window in sequence.Sometimes he would plan a special show in which his sister narrated the "film" based on a script Sam would concoct, and his father would accompany on the violin. As he grew up he found a hobby in photography and by high school had turned his bedroom into a darkroom where he would earn pocket money by developing pictures for his friends. After serving three years in the Israeli army, Sam came to the US in 1971, began to study and work in films, and culminated his studies with “One More Chance," the graduate film thesis which turned into a feature-length film."After Golan bailed us out, our film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981, then went on to become the official US entry at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, and won a Silver Plaque at the 17th Annual Chicago Film Festival. This film became my calling card, and launched my career." recalls Sam.By then Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus had acquired Cannon Films. They hired Sam to direct “Revenge of the Ninja." Sam knew nothing about martial arts, but learned quickly and the film, which starred Sho Kosugi, was shot in Salt Lake City, Utah. Distributed by MGM to a great box-office bonanza, it set the stage for Sam's next directing assignment, “Ninja III - The Domination," also starring Kosugi. The film was shot in Phoenix, Arizona and was also tremendously successful. Both Ninja films directed by Sam were sequels to the highly successful “Enter the Ninja” directed by Golan. "Then came a pleasant opportunity," Sam smiles."Golan wanted me to direct ' Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo," another sequel, which then made me the king of sequels, but also gave me a break from directing Ninja action films."In fact, each of the sequels directed by Firstenberg resulted in better reviews and box office draws than the originals. “Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo " was a musical that featured major dance production numbers, filmed in Los Angeles. Distributed by TRI-STAR it was critically acclaimed; and a box office success, one of the reviews hailed it as"The most exuberant musical of the decade."Soon after the release of " Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo " Sam was on his way to the Philippines to direct "American Ninja" a major action picture starring Michael Dudikoff and Steve James, who would team up with Sam for two additional motion pictures, "Avenging Force," shot in New Orleans and the swamps of Louisiana, and "American Ninja II"'Avenging Force' was one of the most physically grueling productions I ever worked on,"comments Sam."We spent days and nights in water, mud up to our waists, with snakes crawling between our legs."The film opened to rave reviews. The LA Times called Firstenberg"... a rockin' young action director who's pulled off a series of rave up pictures for Cannon including ' American Ninja ' and ' Electric Boogaloo,' and now in ' Avenging Force ' shows off his savvy style, which combines a keen sense of pacing with brawny punch...it marks the emergence of a truly gifted movie talent."The next picture for Sam was “Riverbend”, a controversial drama with Steve James and Margaret Avery from "The Color Purple." The picture explored race relations in 1966 Georgia, and was an opportunity for Firstenberg to work with strong dramatic material. In sharp contrast, Sam's next picture was an all-out comedy, “The Day We Met,” which proved to him that his directorial talents were easily extended."Delta Force III” came next, a military action picture with Nick Cassavettes, Eric Douglas, Mike Norris, and Matthew Penn, and was followed with a breakthrough approach to martial arts in “American Samurai” introducing hot young martial artists David Bradley and Marc Dacascos. Firstenberg then got his first taste of TV work with a nighttime crime show for CBS, directing six episodes of “Sweating Bullets"With the creation of Nu Image, principles Avi Lerner and Danny Dimbort recruited Firstenberg to direct their first production, "Cyborg Cop," and then the sequel, "Cyborg Soldier," both sci-fi action flicks with David Bradley. In addition, Firstenberg completed with Bradley and Frank Zagarino the action picture "Blood Warrior." Next came “Operation Delta Force” a military style action / adventure with Ernie Hudson, Jeff Fahey, Joe Lara, Frank Zagarino, and Hall Halbrok.1997 brought Firstenberg to explore new directorial areas; “McCinsey's Island” is a comedy for children, a treasure hunt movie with Hulk Hogan, Robert Vaughn, and Grace Jones, and “Motel Blue” with Sean Young, Soleil Moon Frye, and Seymour Cassel, is a psychological thriller with two women in the lead.Sam and I had an amazing conversation about all things Cannon Films, Ninjas, Break Dancing, and 80's action films. Enjoy!

It's your lucky day: you just secured a pair of highly sought after backstage passes to the show of a lifetime, brought to you by the many talented ladies and handful of gentleman at Crazy Horse West. That's right, you walked right into...The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, John Cassavetes's crime genre turn of the mid 70s? Well, why we clean up the unexpectedly bloody stage, treat yourself to an opening act Blue Plate Special discussion of Elvis (the man, the myth, and the latest maximalist spectacular from Baz Luhrmann), the new chiller The Black Phone (starring none other than Ethan Hawke), and the promising film project on the horizon (no pun intended) from Yellowstone star Kevin Costner. This week's featured attraction finds us ruminating on the intensely casual cinema of Cassavetes, finding a lot to love in the confident disaster that is Ben Gazzara's performance, and pleasurably surveying what happens when an artist of the highest order decides to take what would otherwise be a soulless "one for them" and turn it into the sort of explosive concoction only they could've made. Are you searching for that special movie that openly invites you to log on, hack in, go anywhere, and steal everything? Then baby, you're in the right place because our latest episode has us gone in 60 mbps with Swordfish, the slick action thriller that once again challenged our assumptions on the lengths to which John Travolta would go to further embarrass himself. But before we jack into this wannabe Matrix...this week's Blue Plate Special finds us loving John Sayles's 1987 union masterpiece Matewan, waxing nostalgically at the 2000 Disney Channel original movie Phantom of the Megaplex, and taking issue with the very existence of the deeply stupid 2000 mob "comedy" The Crew. Speaking of questionable cinema from the early 00s, our discussion and commentary of Swordfish parses what exactly such a work is attempting to posit on a moral or ethical level, evaluates the extent to which this movie's premise and stylings ape a post-Tarantino cinematic philosophy, and assess the extent to which it's the least bit justifiable to fashion a movie about terrorism on the eve of 9/11 as smugly entertaining as this. Come for the pretentious monologues on the unreality of the opening moments of the 21st century, stay for the latest inductee of Overlapping Dialogue's Hall of Fame (the Immune) and a special announcement at the episode's conclusion about a very brief but special upcoming series of episodes we have in store... "Then came a pleasant opportunity," Sam smiles. "Golan wanted me to direct ' Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo," another sequel, which then made me the king of sequels, but also gave me a break from directing Ninja action films."In fact, each of the sequels directed by Firstenberg resulted in better reviews and box office draws than the originals. “Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo " was a musical that featured major dance production numbers, filmed in Los Angeles. Distributed by TRI-STAR it was critically acclaimed; and a box office success, one of the reviews hailed it as "The most exuberant musical of the decade."Soon after the release of " Breakin 2 - Electric Boogaloo " Sam was on his way to the Philippines to direct "American Ninja" a major action picture starring Michael Dudikoff and Steve James, who would team up with Sam for two additional motion pictures, "Avenging Force," shot in New Orleans and the swamps of Louisiana, and "American Ninja II"        'Avenging Force' was one of the most physically grueling productions I ever worked on,"comments Sam."We spent days and nights in water, mud up to our waists, with snakes crawling between our legs."The film opened to rave reviews. The LA Times called Firstenberg "... a rockin' young action director who's pulled off a series of rave up pictures for Cannon including ' American Ninja ' and ' Electric Boogaloo,' and now in ' Avenging Force ' shows off his savvy style, which combines a keen sense of pacing with brawny punch...it marks the emergence of a truly gifted movie talent."The next picture for Sam was “Riverbend”, a controversial drama with Steve James and Margaret Avery from "The Color Purple." The picture explored race relations in 1966 Georgia, and was an opportunity for Firstenberg to work with strong dramatic material. In addition, Firstenberg completed with Bradley and Frank Zagarino the action picture "Blood Warrior." Next came “Operation Delta Force” a military style action / adventure with Ernie Hudson, Jeff Fahey, Joe Lara, Frank Zagarino, and Hall Halbrok.1997 brought Firstenberg to explore new directorial areas; “McCinsey's Island” is a comedy for children, a treasure hunt movie with Hulk Hogan, Robert Vaughn, and Grace Jones, and “Motel Blue” with Sean Young, Soleil Moon Frye, and Seymour Cassel, is a psychological thriller with two women in the lead.Sam and I had an amazing conversation about all things Cannon Films, Ninjas, Break Dancing and 80's action films. Enjoy!

This week: the Nude Clan boys discuss the film Postal (2007), based on the video game of the same name!   Wikipedia:   Postal is a 2007 American–German action comedy film co-written and directed by Uwe Boll, and starring Zack Ward, Dave Foley, Chris Coppola, Jackie Tohn, J.K. Simmons, Verne Troyer, Larry Thomas, David Huddleston and Seymour Cassel. Like the majority of Boll's previous films, Postal is a film adaptation of a video game, in this case, Postal, though this film draws more heavily from the video game's sequel, Postal 2. Also like Boll's predecessors, it was a critical and commercial failure, grossing less than 1% of its budget.   #UweBoll #Postal #Review   -------------------------------------   LINKS   Thanks for your support! And then next they talk about legendary documentary filmmaker, D.A. Pennebaker, who Teal worked with on Depeche Mode: 101.   On the last episode, Jim mentioned seeing The Irishman, but now Teal saw it, and the two spend a chunk of time dissecting the film. After that, Teal tells Jim he watched The Farewell, based on his recommendation. It wasn't intentional, but both films (Irishman and Farewell) have a lot to say about the meaning of Life and Death, and make for an interesting double-bill.

The world of cinema has lost some true giants with the deaths of Stanley Donen, Agnes Varda and actor Seymour Cassel in the past few months. But Larry Cohen, one of the most overlooked filmmakers of his generation, also passed away recently. Aside from a few outlier critical voices like Robin Wood, Cohen's work has had a great deal less critical analysis than it deserves. Jay, Azed and guest host Omar Majeed try to do their own small part to rectify this oversight giving particular attention to the films Bone, God Told Me To and It's Alive. A trio of films that make indelible criticisms of race, religion and the nuclear family and expose cracks in the dominant social order with an acuity rarely seen before or since. The hosts also briefly discuss Agnes Varda's death, Julian Assange's arrest and, most importantly, how Omar's recent CSA award really classes up the show. A tastefulness we suspect Cohen would have found oddly inappropriate considering his own stubborn commitment to his status as the ultimate schlockmeister.
