Brooklyn’s own Nems—rapper, hustler, and Coney Island’s unofficial mayor—pulls up to share his raw, unfiltered story. From battling addiction and running the streets to doing time, facing homelessness, and ultimately turning his life around by working for DSNY, Nems has lived it all. But through every struggle, music was his therapy, and for the last 20 years, he’s been grinding—dropping projects, pushing his FYL merch (starting from Instagram DMs!), and even trademarking his viral catchphrase, Bing-Bong. Now signed to Paul Rosenberg and gearing up for tour, Nems reflects on his journey, his love for his Mami who never gave up on him, and what it really means to go from rock bottom to running the city. Tap in for an episode full of real talk, wild stories, and the undeniable energy of a true Brooklyn legend. Gorilla Nems in the building—Bing-Bong!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New York City's mandatory composting program, which is already operational in Brooklyn and Queens, is expanding to Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx. Hilary Howard, New York Times reporter covering how the New York City region is adapting to climate change and other environmental challenges, breaks down how residents and landlords can get on board, what's compostable and when the program will start being enforced.Note: During the segment, our guest noted that composting experts don't recommend using bags marketed as "biodegradable" to dispose of food waste, either for curbside composting or the smart composting bins found on the street. The Department of Sanitation reached out to clarify that those bags ARE permitted in both curbside compost bins and the smart bins. DSNY said the bags are removed during processing, and that paper, compostable or clear plastic bags are all acceptable.
As the New York City Department of Sanitation plans to ramp up its fines for restaurants and residential buildings, Sophia Chang, WNYC/Gothamist reporter, breaks down the new guidelines and their deadlines, plus other sanitation-related news.

Scanner School - Everything you wanted to know about the Scanner Radio Hobby
Why is one of my favorite nights to listen to the scanner radio New Years Eve? That is because my scanner allows me to get behind the scenes to the biggest New Years Eve party in the United States. Every year in Times Square, the ball drops at midnight and the entire event is televised on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years with Ryan Seacrest. Using my scanner, I'm able to hear the link between the director and the remote cameras and hosts. I'm able to listen to them queue in the next shot and also hear them record "B-Roll" as soon as the sun goes down. But not only am I able to hear behind the scenes, but I'm also able to hear coordination from NYPD and DSNY. This podcast lays out how I hear all of this activity and how you might be able to listen to similar activity in your area. I'll also tell you how you can listen to my live scanner feed as well. Today's podcast is also available on YouTube as a presentation at: https://youtu.be/FGVQkxASZL0 ====================================

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 6th July. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. VOLKSWAGEN TO SELL STAKE IN ELECTRIFY AMERICA - Volkswagen is to sell a stake in its electric vehicle charging unit Electrify America, two people familiar with the matter said, as the carmaker looks for outside funds to build infrastructure for battery-powered cars. - Set up in the aftermath of Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal that broke in the United States, Electrify America plans to spend $2 billion in the 2017-2026 period to expand charging stations for electric vehicles (EV). - Charging infrastructure has attracted several sectors, including utilities, carmakers and big oil firms, all hoping to cash in on a rising demand for electricity in the wake of a global EV rollout. Sources told Reuters last week that Renault and Shell were both interested in becoming co-owners in Ionity, the European EV charging joint venture owned by BMW Hyundai, Ford, Daimler and VW. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/06/volkswagen-reportedly-wants-to-sell-stake-in-charging-unit-electrify-america.html PREMIUM ELECTRIC CAR OF THE YEAR 2021: HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 - The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the 2021 Auto Express Premium Electric Car of the Year, with the Audi Q4 e-tron and Tesla Model 3 commended - With the Ioniq 5, Hyundai has stepped up a level from its already highly-rated Kona Electric. Here, the Korean brand has aimed for the premium territory, and it's nailed the brief at its first attempt. - Like the Hyundai, the Audi Q4 e-tron is a very recent newcomer to the segment – and it runs our winner close. Practicality is staggering for the car's modest footprint, and on the move it's comfortable and easy to drive. However, the Q4 must play second best to the Ioniq because it can't keep up with its more advanced charging tech. - the Model 3 seems like an old-timer in this segment now, such is the rate of progress. However, it remains tough to beat in some areas – in particular the ease of access to its Supercharger network, and its huge touchscreen display. Elsewhere, it doesn't quite feel as sophisticated as the newest rivals, Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hyundai/ioniq-5/355451/premium-electric-car-year-2021-hyundai-ioniq-5?utm_source=pocket_mylist CAR AND DRIVER'S 2021 EV OF THE YEAR - If an automaker wanted to convert people from EV skeptics to EV evangelists, it's hard to imagine a better vehicle for the job than the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It arrives in the familiar shape and size of the crossovers Americans love, at a price that competes with gas-powered alternatives, and with a design that gets noticed. The Mach-E has the range and charging speed to wave off the most common EV criticisms, and thanks to Electrify America's recent work, there's a nationwide charging network that makes long interstate trips not just possible but tolerable. For new EV converts, piloting a Mach-E isn't so different from driving a gas-burning SUV that it feels foreign, yet the experience is futuristic enough to be exciting. It's the right car to bring drivers along during this watershed moment as EVs transition from niche alternative to new normal. The engine achieves 410 HP and 550 Nm of torque up to 5,650 rpm, and the motor, which is located between the transmission and the engine, provides up to 134 HP - 14.1 kWh lithium ion battery Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/06/bentley-reveals-flying-spur-hybrid-its-latest-in-the-push-towards-electric/?utm_source=pocket_mylist GM FILES TO BRAND ETRUNK FOR ELECTRIC CAR FRONT TRUNK - General Motors has filed to trademark ETRUNK, GM Authority has uncovered. The filing may be used in branding for a feature slated for a selection of GM's upcoming electric cars, trucks, and utility vehicles. - The trademark filing is likely a new brand name intended for use with a GM front truck feature (sometimes referred to as a “frunk”) slated for use in a selection of the automaker's upcoming electric vehicles. It is now known that the carmaker, which belongs to the Tata Group, has an increased need for battery cells: Under the new CEO Thierry Bolloré, the ‘Reimagine' strategy was drawn up, according to which Jaguar is to become an all-electric brand from 2025. The force recently added two new Zero electric motorcycles to its fleet, part of the city's transition to all-renewable energy. - Traffic officers say the electric motorcycles are smoother, faster and quieter.“It allows us to patrol the parks and trails,” said Sgt. Mike Blickensdorf, “without disturbing the citizens while not emitting exhaust.” - In Florida, the EV opportunity is great. The state is home to more than 21 million residents, and passenger vehicles are responsible for 50 percent of criteria air pollutant emissions - Due to its warm climate and hundreds of coastline miles, Florida is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change – rising sea level, high temperatures and storm surges. Mack made the announcement during WasteExpo 2021 - The world's largest municipal sanitation department, DSNY collects about 12,000 tons of refuse and recyclables daily with more than 6,000 vehicles - The three-mode regenerative braking system accounts for the refuse truck's increasing load throughout the day and helps recapture energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes each day. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Two VERY different kinds of holiday films. Both over the top but in much different ways. Intro, the band is back together but very remote. Eshom Nelms and Ian Nelms The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2 (Netflix) Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are part of the allure here- and as they should be along with Tyrese Gibson, Malcolm McDowell, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. As a part two to Netflix's original Christmas Chronicles in which a brother and sister had to help save Christmas. Part two is no different. Once again, the sister and step brother must help Santa and Mrs. save Christmas as they get sucked into a portal by the evil elf turned human, Belsnickle. Tis one has a huge amount of camp and Christmas spirit, BUT that's about it. (3/10) Fatman (VOD) This is one of the season's best movies, hands down. Mel Gibson just SHINES as Chris K, a real life broken Santa Clause that the script immediately commits to and doesn't look back. Him, Mrs. Claus and his elven work force are contracted by the U.S. government to help with building military vehicles to supplement financially because, "All I have is loathing for a world thats forgotten." That statement fits perfectly with Mel as an actor. Walton Goggins is an assassin hired to kill Santa. You can think you know where this movie is going, but you really don't. But you will absolutely enjoy this. (6.5/10) Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion. Guest appearance by Christopher Boughan. Music by Chad Wall. The measles outbreak continues to grow as new cases are identified. According to the city health department, there have been 466 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since September, and New York is a major contributor to the nationwide total of 764 cases, the highest number in 25 years. Within the city, Orthodox Jewish communities are hardest hit due to a combination of unvaccinated individuals and travelers returning from Israel, where there has been an outbreak of measles since last year. In the city health department data, Williamsburg has the highest total number of cases, at 379, and has added 31 new cases just in the previous week. The city has also carried through with restrictions outlined in an official health department declaration from last month, closing multiple schools and citing more than 80 individuals for failing to show proof of vaccination or to obtain a new vaccination. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. 142 years ago on May 8, 1877 — The first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is held in Manhattan 170 years ago on May 10, 1849 — A rivalry between Shakespearean actors fuels the Astor Place Riot at the Astor Opera House 136 years ago on May 12, 1883 — The Brooklyn Grays hold their first baseball game 116 years ago on May 15, 1903 — New York becomes the first state to require vehicle registration numbers 78 years ago on May 15, 1941 — Joe DiMaggio begins what would become his famous 56-game hitting streak City data on DSNY salt usage: In the DSNY data, storms are loosely grouped into numbered storms when road clearing takes place over multiple days. From November 2018 to March 2019, there were eight significant storms that required an average of around 41,000 tons of salt per storm, for a season total of 329,849 tons. A deadly fire at the Frederick E. Samuel Apartments in Harlem claimed the lives of four children and two adults in the early-morning hours of May 8th. In what appears to have been an unfortunate accident, fire marshals found the cause to have been an unattended stove that was left lit. It was unknown whether the stove was being used for cooking, to heat the apartment, or if it was left lit for religious reasons, as was the case in a similar overnight fire in Midwood, Brooklyn in 2015 that killed seven children. Speaking to PIX11, an FDNY source said that the smoke alarm was found disconnected, which could explain why the family was not alerted by the alarm, which was inspected just five months earlier. 42 years ago on May 16, 1977 — A New York Airways helicopter crashes while loading passengers from atop the Pan Am building Planetary Defense Conference in College Park, Maryland simulates a hypothetical asteroid impact on ol' New York City Manhattanhenge Photography Tips and Viewing Locations A Great Big City has been running a 24-hour newsfeed since 2010, but the AGBC News podcast is just getting started, and we need your support.
