Hear about travel to Duluth, Minnesota as the Amateur Traveler talks to travel photographer Autumn Carolynn about this city on Lake Superior that has captured her heart. Why should you go to Duluth? Autumn says, "There are so many reasons why Duluth to me is a place that someone can go and feel like they are at home, I feel like it is just so unbelievably beautiful, but it's also a place where you feel at peace and you feel calm. So it is one of the top places in my mind. I had this goal to go to 30 countries before I turned 30 and out of all the places that I've been to, Duluth is still my number one, which some people think is weird, but to me it just is." Summer Itinerary (Warm-Weather Activities & Scenic North Shore Drive) This itinerary focuses on outdoor activities, hiking, and exploring the North Shore of Lake Superior. Start in Duluth: Visit the Aerial Lift Bridge (watch ships pass under it, listen for the Captain's Salute). Walk around Canal Park, shop at Duluth Pack, and eat at Grandma's Saloon (wild rice burger & chicken wild rice soup). Stop by Canal Park Brewing Company (try "Loon Juice" cider). ... https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-duluth-minnesota/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mike Ferguson in the Morning 11-21-24 (7:05am) Darrell Jones from the Herzog Foundation talks about Trump's nomination of Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education and we also discuss the three illegal teachers' strikes in Massachusetts which are forcing over 10,000 students out of school.  From the Herzog Foundation: President-elect Donald Trump has nominated business executive and former Cabinet member Linda McMahon for Secretary of Education. In his press statement, Trump described McMahon, who is well-known for founding and leading the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Inc. with her husband Vince McMahon, as a “fierce advocate for Parents' Rights.” “Linda will fight tirelessly to expand ‘Choice' in every State in America, and empower parents to make the best Education decisions for their families,” Trump wrote. “Linda will use her decades of Leadership experience, and a deep understanding of both Education and Business, to empower the next Generation of American Students and Workers, and make America Number One in Education in the World.” Story here: https://readlion.com/trump-names-former-cabinet-member-linda-mcmahon-as-next-secretary-of-education/   Meanwhile, illegal teachers' union strikes in Massachusetts are nearing their third week, amassing thousands in fines. Three Massachusetts teachers' unions are continuing their illegal strike, forcing 10,000 students out of school. The Beverly Teachers Association (BTA), the Union of Gloucester Educators (UCE), and the Marblehead Education Association (MEA) are on strike in their respective school districts, even though public union walkouts are outlawed in Massachusetts. The districts are in the Greater Boston area. Gloucester school board chair Kathleen Clancy said they'd offer the union “the largest salary increases ever” in the district's history but needed to make sure the city “does not overstrain its finances or be forced to make service and personnel cuts.” Beverly leadership also made generous offers to increase teacher salaries by nearly 30% and paraprofessional wages by nearly 45%. But the unions still aren't satisfied, even though they're running up against legal ramifications. A judge told the MEA to end their strike by Nov. 14 or else face a $50,000 fine, with an additional $10,000 for every day the strike continues. BTA and UCE are compounding similar fines, though their penalties started on Nov. 12. NBC10 reported the BTA is scheduled to appear in court next Monday. Today from many of the 12 or so sauna benches, we hear from guests attending Sauna Days 2023 at Larsmont Cottages, Two Harbors, Minnesota. The stories are from their hearts. We get to tap into their motivations and ambitions to make their way to Northern Minnesota for the third Sauna Days festival this early chilly May weekend. Though upwards of 200 people were in attendance, we hear from a fraction of the attendees. Most were on other benches or experiencing the world's largest cold plunge in Lake Superior. Yet with the voices on this episode, you'll be able to get an on the spot perspective of what Sauna Days is all about. I'll take a moment to set the scene. Larsmont Cottage is an upscale resort along the shores of Lake Superior, along the rocky North Shore North of Duluth Minnesota, and South of Canada. If you're looking for peace and tranquility or a launch pad for North Shore adventures but not your typical hotel — our cottages on Lake Superior are a place to celebrate the immense beauty and scale of our planet's greatest lake. Tucked away in 40 acres of private woods south of Two Harbors, this location combines a Northwoods experience with 1,300 feet of beachfront shoreline. – Larsmont Cottages.com So, imagine a Larsmont Cottages sauna take over, and you've got a picture of Sauna Days. I'll keep this introduction nice and short, and will leave you with this final thought of consideration. Does sauna bring out the best in people or does sauna bring out the best people. Maybe it's a lot of both. But whatever the case, judging from the smiles, laughter, and community spirit, Sauna Days was a joyful experience. At checkout on Sunday, many were signing up for Sauna Days 2024. I caught more than a few guests walking the grounds, sizing up their favorite lakeside cottage to commit back to the front desk. Hope you enjoy this episode, and I hope to see you at Sauna Days 2024. For more on Sauna Days 2023, please check the review here.

Today, Bishop Daniel Felton of the Diocese of Duluth, MN announced how Pope Francis's motu proprio, "Traditionis custodes", would be implemented in the Duluth diocese.  It was much better news than many dioceses have received.  The current weekly TLM in the diocese will continue as is with no changes.  The "moderator" of the TLM community in the diocese is Father Joel Hastings, who is the Director of Liturgy for the Duluth diocese and is the priest who has been saying the weekly TLM.#catholic #traditional #duluth ********************************************************Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.Avoiding Babylon does not criticize the hierarchy or institutional Church, especially Pope Francis. We recognize there is an unprecedented crisis in the Church, but we feel that there are other shows that address these issues that are more qualified than us. Instead, we try to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God's Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,There's always laughter and good red wine.At least I've always found it so.Benedicamus Domino!”https://www.avoidingbabylon.comTelegram Chat:  https://t.me/+0Y7wFEkoovg1NTcxCheck out our store! - https://avoiding-babylon.sellfy.store Support the showCheck out our new store!

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2022 30:44

A dive into the Close Talking archives - one of the first episodes we ever recorded in which we discuss the poem "The Lynching Postcard, Duluth, Minnesota" by Ray Gonzalez. Poetry can seem a little insignificant in the face of an onslaught of historically awful news, like the one we've all been experience the last few weeks. But poems like this one have a special kind of power - cutting to deep truths and insisting on action in the face of the horrors of history. And reminding us that history walks along side us every day. The Lynching Postcard, Duluth, Minnesota By: Ray Gonzalez There is a postcard in an antique shop in Duluth with a photograph of the infamous lynching of a black man carried out in the town in the 1930s. The owner was turned down by eBay when he wanted to sell it there. Tourists walk into his shop and stare at the lone card in the glass case. The owner says it is better to sell it than donate it to a museum where it would be locked away in a drawer. Some people want it removed. Others snicker and stare, shake their heads and accept the fact this is "only Minnesota." Each morning, the shop owner glances at the case to make sure the postcard is there. Thousands have bowed over the glass. At night, when the shop is closed, the postcard lies in the case, the body hanging in the cold moonlight from Lake Superior, the shadow from the swinging body forming a shape that rises through the glass to darken the shop. Over a dozen people have come across it. They don't know the act of bending over the glass to study the dead body on the pole is forming an invisible arc of light over time, a shadow where those who bow to look imitate the shape of a hanging tree.
