In this controversial conversation, the hosts discuss the topics of ephedrine and its ability to increase metabolic rate and suppress hunger. Nicotine and the studied health *benefits (yes, you read that right), pelvic floor training (especially for men). And when it comes to nutrition labels, they caution against relying solely on front-of-package claims, as they can be extremely misleading. TIMESTAMPS: (00:00) Intro (04:22) Ephedrine for fat loss (17:04) How to read nutrition labels (28:32) Nicotine benefits & risks (55:30) Pelvic floor (especially for men) Resources: -> Access to all complete 12-week training programs HERE -> Fitness Stuff Calculators (Calorie, Protein, etc.) FS Premium: Sign up for Fitness Stuff PREMIUM here!! Takeaways Ephedrine can be an effective fat burning supplement when used responsibly, but it should be used towards the end of a diet or on days when hunger control is needed. Front-of-package claims on nutrition labels can be misleading, and it's important to be aware of the most common misleading claims, such as 'natural' and 'organic'. The term 'natural' on a nutrition label does not have a formal definition and does not necessarily mean that the product resembles anything natural. The 'organic' label tells you nothing about the health of a food, it is regulated by governing bodies but organic crops can still use both synthetic pesticides and non-synthetic pesticides. Understand the potential benefits of nicotine when separated from tobacco. Nicotine acts as a strong nootropic, enhancing cognition and focus by increasing neurotransmitters like dopamine, acetylcholine, and norepinephrine. Nicotine can also be used to reduce appetite and suppress cravings while dieting, but it should be used in moderation and with caution due to its addictive nature. Delivery methods like smoking and vaping can have harmful effects on the body, while options like nicotine gum or mints are safer. Pelvic floor training is beneficial for both men and women, improving bladder control, sexual pleasure, core stability, and reducing the risk of injury. A weight loss drug? Yes, there is a "new" weight loss drug on the market (beginning of 2023). But, don't get to excited just yet...Remember things like Fen-Phen, Ephedrine, or Dinitrophenol (DNP)? There are many other drugs that have proven to be effective for weight loss, but also dangerous and even deadly. Smoking meth or snorting cocaine are also pretty effective ways to lose weight...The new class of drug that is all the rage these days is a compound called semaglutide. The truth is that these drugs are not very new. The drug Ozempic was developed in 2012 and later approved by the FDA for the treatment of diabetes in 2017. However, this year, 2023, Ozempic as well as other brand name drugs of semaglutide have been approved for the treatment of Obesity. So what exactly is semaglutide and how does it work to promote weight loss? We'll cover the science and mechanisms of that in today's episode. But the bigger question is whether the weight loss achieved through taking this medication is actually healthy or sustainable.Spoiler alert: There are probably much more ways to spend $1200 each month than on 4 weekly injections of semaglutide to curb appetite. Some highlights from the episode:Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist (glucagon like peptide - 1) that serves to promote insulin release in the pancreas, decrease gastric emptying (digestive function), and block appetite signals in the brain. The effects - and side effects - of GLP-1 agonistsWhy suppressing appetite is naturally unsustainable - we need food and nutrients! How these drugs treat diabetes and obesity by addressing the symptomsWhat the actual cause of diabetes and obesity is and how these conditions can be reversed easily and naturally by eating MORELinks to some more good stuff- ALL NEW EAT MORE, WEIGH LESS PROGRAM - www.alter.health/eat-more-weigh-less- 1-on-1 Nutritional Analysis Package - www.alter.health/nutritional-analysis - Get the Alter Health weekly WFPB Meal Guides: www.alter.health/meal-guides- Work with us in the Thrive on Plants program: www.alter.health/thrive-on-plants

Intro Randy talks about how he is dropping his life-long habit of inhaling abnormal amounts of caffeine. Why I drink so much caffeine: - It's a stimulant and feels very good to help focus while in front of a computer, for often 12 hours a day. The problem with the caffeine amount that I drink is that coffee is often 3 x's the amount found in a soda. For example: an 8-ouce cup of coffee has between 95-200mg of caffeine. - For comparison, a 12 ounce can of soda has 34-45mg - 8-ounce energy drink: 70-100mg - 8-ounce cup of tea: 14-60mg Why I'm cutting Caffeine - Increases blood pressure - Increases release of acid in your stomach - It may interfere with the absorption of calcium in the body - Apparently there is synthetic caffeine that's added to some medicines, foods, and drinks. I did not know this. I probably just assumed that those companies were just finding the natural caffeine and then extracting it and adding it to different things. - Source for all of that above information - [Caffeine: MedlinePlus](https://medlineplus.gov/caffeine.html#:~:text=What%20are%20caffeine%27s%20effects%20on%20the%20body%3F%201,in%20the%20body%205%20Increases%20your%20blood%20pressure) - The side effects kind of concern me. There are the obvious side effects like staying awake, but there are others such as anxiety, dehydration, and rapid or abnormal heart rhythm. - When looking on Mayo Clinic's site, they write a "TLDR" version that says you may want to cut back if you're drinking more than 4 cups of caffeinated coffee a day and have side effects such as headache, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, fast heartbeat, muscle tremors. Don't take it with Ephedrine (commonly found in decongestants), may increase risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, or seizure. - If you drink caffeinated tea, you can cut down on the brew time to lessen the caffeine content. - Mayo Clinic source for above info: [Caffeine: How much is too much? - Mayo Clinic](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20045678?p=1) Follow our Podcast - If you're a new listener to the Manly Hanley Podcast, we would love to hear from you. Weight training is the most important type of exercise for fat loss, overall health, and mental and physical strength and resilience. No, that's not a typo. Weight training is more important than cardio, even for getting and staying lean. Unfortunately, through public health propaganda, we've been led to believe that low-fat, minimal meat diets and lots of cardio are the solution. They're not. A new study adds to the fat-burning benefits of resistance training. How Resistance Training Stimulates Fat Loss Strength training helps you shed fat through multiple mechanisms, some direct and some indirect. Catecholamines and Lipolysis This one is a bit technical, but I wanted to include it for those who get geeked out by physiology like I do. In August of 2021, Vechetti IJ, et al. published Mechanical overload-induced muscle-derived extracellular vesicles promote adipose tissue lipolysis. Their research showed, for the first time, how resistance-trained muscles directly increase fat metabolism. The catecholamines norepinephrine and epinephrine stimulate -adrenergic receptors in fat cells, which enhances insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, and metabolic rate. Ephedrine was one of the most powerful supplements for triggering this process, which is why it was so effective for fat loss. However, the FDA banned its use in supplements in 2004 based on concerns of cardiovascular risk. First using animal and human in vitro studies, and then animal and human in vivo studies, NAME, et al. found that overloaded muscle tissue, like that exposed to a hypertrophy-style strength training session, has a similar effect. When skeletal muscles are overloaded, they release microRNA 1 (miR-1) containing extracellular vesicles (EVs). Epidydimal white adipose tissue (eWAT) then takes up those EVs, which increases B-adrenergic (AdrB3) expression, which increases lipolysis (fat breakdown). Since the increased levels of catecholamines also increase overall energy expenditure, the fatty acids can then be used for energy, reducing fat mass. Increased glycogen storage and reduced blood sugar When you eat carbohydrates, you use them one of four ways: Burn them for your immediate energy needsStore them in your liver and muscle cells as glycogenLet the glucose float around in your blood, which causes significant damage as is seen in those with type II diabetesConvert them to triglycerides and fat It would be impossible for most of us to eat a meal's worth of carbohydrates, and then burn them immediately afterwards. That means the last three scenarios are the most likely. This is where resistance training comes in. The more muscle you have, the more capacity you have for storing carbohydrates. That means when you eat them, you have a place to put them so they won't leave you with elevated blood sugar and you won't convert them to fat and get fatter. Unfortunately, most diabetes doctors significantly under emphasize the importance of resistance training. They leave a patient feeling like strength training is an optional activity, rather than hitting them over the head with its importance. Type II diabetes need not be a lifelong condition. At its core, it's an issue of carbohydrate intolerance. By reducing dietary carbohydrates and increasing carbohydrate storage capacity through resistance training, most people can regain their health and don't need to survive by using pharmaceuticals. Supplements like berberine and other lifestyle hacks can help, too. But if you're serious about controlling your blood sugar, you'll make strength training a nonnegotiable part of your lifestyle. By controlling blood sugar, you maintain lower insulin levels, which allows you to tap into your fat stores for more of your energy needs. Improved strength and stamina which increases physical activity Weak bodies tend to be more sedentary. Sedentary bodies lead to weak bodies.

This episode I describe the science of fat loss, including how fat is mobilized and oxidized (burned) and how to increase fat burning by leveraging the nervous system. Most people don't realize it, but our neurons connect to our fat and release epinephrine/adrenaline to facilitate fat oxidation. I explain how this can be accomplished with non-exercise movements such as fidgeting to burn thousands of calories of fat a day-- a practice is rarely discussed but very well supported by the science literature. I also discuss an optimal fat loss protocol using cold to create shiver, and how specific types and timing of exercise impact fat loss. I discuss if exercising fasted indeed increases fat oxidation-- it turns out the type and duration of exercise really matters. And I discuss the use of caffeine, GLP1 from Mate or guayusa and emerging new prescription compounds for fat loss. The episode includes a lot of tools, links to cost-free resources and explanation of the science underlying each tool for fat loss. No matter how hard you train, how dialed in your diet is, or how smartly you supplement, losing weight is a pain in the ass. The leaner you get, the more you have to deal with hunger and cravings, the harder your workouts become, and the less you have to eat to keep the needle moving. That’s why many people turn to drugs like ephedrine for help, which has a special place in the hearts of bodybuilders everywhere. If you’ve spent any amount of time in the gym, you’ve undoubtedly heard that it’s as close to a weight loss “magic bullet” as you can ask for. Ephedrine purportedly kills your appetite while also dramatically increasing your metabolic rate and fat burning, which means you’ll not only lose fat faster but will also have an easier time of sticking to your meal plans, as well. Even better, we’re told, ephedrine is just as safe as caffeine but, unlike the world’s most popular drug, gets more effective the longer you use it. Poke around online, though, and you’ll find the opposition party, who claim that ephedrine is middling at best as a fat burner and not nearly as safe as many people think. The more strident critics even claim that it can significantly raise the risk of anxiety attack, heart attack, and stroke. And so, like with many things related to building muscle, losing fat, and getting healthy, you’re stuck in the middle, wondering whom to believe. How effective is ephedrine, really? How serious are the side effects and health risks? And if it’s safe, how should it be dosed and how long should you take it for? Well, you’re going to get answers to all of those questions and more in this episode. You’re going to learn exactly how ephedrine works, how good of a “fat burner” it really is, what the literature has to say about its safety, and more. Let’s get to it. 3:34 - What is Ephedrine and how does it work? 9:28 - Is Ephedrine safe? 10:07 - Why is Ephedrine labeled dangerous? 12:41 - How much Ephedrine should I take? 14:56 - Is Ephedrine legal? 15:46 - Is there another product similar to Ephedrine?
