In this episode, I explore the use of diet pills and eating disorders. It's a topic that is not talked about enough. I'm aware that many people may be struggling with a physical and mental dependency to these pills. I explore the link between diet pills and eating disorders; how these pills are so easily accessible and 'normalised'; different types of pills and how to begin to come off them. Please do consult with your medical doctor before making any changes around diet pill usage. I hope that you find this helpful. TW: Eating Disorders, Diets, Extreme Food Restriction Join me on a journey through my history of chronic dieting as I delve into the darkly (and slightly comical at times) world of extreme food restriction and misguided weight loss attempts I tried between the ages 7 and 27. From the 18p Tommy Soup Diet to Special K and beyond, prepare to cringe, laugh, and maybe even cry, out of pure frustration, at the lengths I went to in pursuit of thinness. But fear not, for amidst the chaos lies a tale of redemption and resilience, as I reflect on how these experiences led me to becoming the coach I am today. So buckle up and brace yourselves for a rollercoaster ride through the pitfalls of all my fad diets with a little bit of hope at the end... This month we're talking to a distinguished social epidemiologist and behavioural scientist at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health. Her name is Professor Bryn Austin, and her research focuses on public health approaches to eating disorders. Our conversation begins with an overview of the web that connects consumer culture, corporate exploitation, and the pervasive influence of diet culture on body image. “We've known for decades how harmful the consumer marketplace can be with diet culture, the diet industry, diet pills and supplements, and all the negative body image pressures that come through media, social media and advertising,” she says. “People have been writing about this for decades.” The problem is we still need to more deeply understand–and do more to address—what corporations are doing to exploit diet culture for profit. Don't miss Professor Austin's wise perspective. Not only does she share her thoughts on the complexities of the body image and eating disorders landscape, but she also discusses the transformative potential of strategic initiatives, including what her Harvard-based laboratory did to protect young Americans from predatory diet-industry profiteering. Everything is just about figuring out how. It's not what you eat, it's how you eat.● [36:17] If you do LIIT, low intensity interval training, vs. HIIT, high intensity interval training, and can be consistent with it, you are better off maintaining that consistency, so you can get the daily habits that create health, vitality, and longevity. QUOTES: “Western medicine functions on the treatment of symptoms versus what's the underlying cause of the issue. So that's how a lot of people end up in the snowball of prescriptions because it's like this one's for the first symptom and then this is for the side effects.” - Jenn Trepeck “A friend's husband said to me, wait a minute, I thought we were supposed to put our daughters on birth control as soon as they got their period. So it's another thing to wait, stop, we have to take this back. We have to be our own health advocate and do our own knowledge search, get our own education.” - Jenn Trepeck “It almost goes back to that perfectionism thing. If you use a food scale at home and then you go eat out and you're anxious, that anxiety over the portion size is worse than whatever the portion size is, you know? So the objective is to make it work and figure it out, not to let all of this stuff completely consume your life.” - Jenn Trepeck“What feels really personal and specific, is often incredibly universal." - Jenn Trepeck"Everything we've talked about is about changing your life without disrupting it, without losing your life." - Jenn Trepeck RESOURCES:Episode 189: Should Chat GPT or AI Be Your Health Coach? In the Name of the Pill by Mike Gaskins Resolution RevolutionBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

Originally designed to treat diabetes, GLP-1 analogs are now prescribed as weight loss medications. But is this a good idea and should parents allow their kids to try this if they want to lose weight? Can these drugs increase the rates of eating disorders among young people? Diet pills have been around for decades and historically have been pulled from the market after noting serious side effects. So, what do patients — and parents — need to know about weight loss medications? Dr. Anna B. Tanner, Vice President of Child and Adolescent Medicine for Accanto Health, shares her findings on whether these medications are safe and whether they can lead to eating disorders. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest, Dr. Anna B. Tanner (she/her), is Vice President of Child and Adolescent Medicine for Accanto Health, the parent company of Veritas Collaborative, The Emily Program, and Gather Behavioral Health. In this role, she has the opportunity to help younger patients access treatment with age-appropriate medical care. She works with child and adolescent medical sites across The Emily Program and Veritas Collaborative brands and also enjoys providing direct care to patients at Veritas' Atlanta facility. Dr. Tanner is driven to provide research-based medicine to young people and is passionate about preventing the long-term effects of eating disorders in children and adolescents. Medical complications in eating disorders are often treated through an age-neutral lens, yet children and adolescents have unique medical complications related to growth and development. Dr. Tanner is a board-certified pediatrician who has specialized in the care of adolescent patients, in particular patients with eating disorders, for almost 25 years. Dr. Tanner completed medical school and residency at Vanderbilt University and then remained there to serve on the Pediatrics faculty in the Division of Young Adult and Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Tanner has been very involved in advocacy and education efforts and serves on national and international committees for eating disorders education. She speaks frequently across the United States on the medical complications of eating disorders, especially as they affect children and young adolescents, and contributed a book chapter on that topic in the 4th edition of Dr. Philip S. Mehler's “Eating Disorders: A Comprehensive Guide to Medical Care and Complications.” Dr. Tanner currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics for Emory University School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine. She is co-chair of the Academy of Eating Disorders (AED) Medical Care Standards Committee and a member of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) Curriculum Committee. Dr. Tanner is a Fellow in the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM), a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and a Certified Eating Disorders Supervisor. She has been named by Atlanta magazine as a “Top Doctor” every year from 2013 to 2023 and named by Castle Connelly as an Exceptional Woman in Medicine and one of America's Most Honored Doctors. In the last decade the body positivity movement has been deprogramming our pop culture brains from believing being thinner is better. Finally we're seeing diverse bodies on runways, on television, and on magazine covers and the supermarket. But is the rapid rise of weight loss drugs like Ozempic… about to change all that? This is not the first time drugs have promised to make us all thin… In fact diet pills have a pretty long history involving experiments on kids, heart problems and even deaths. So will things be different this time?
Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro are creating a deadly standard in diet culture. Jenn is telling us the real short cut, as she sees it. Today, Jenn is discussing the trending diet pills (or really pharmaceuticals being used for weight loss) that are currently taking the market by storm: Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. While your insurance may be covering these pills to assist with weight loss, are they the real deal? And what about Berberine which is being called “nature's Ozempic”? Jenn walks through the expectations that people have of taking these diet pills, how they work in the body and how successful outcomes are determined. She also shares the real shortcut, as she sees it, that can create weight loss in a healthy, long lasting way. Tune in today to understand the healthier ways to achieve weight loss goals and what you are desiring. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE:● [7:00] What are Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and how are they used?● [9:42] How quickly do you notice the effect of these drugs and what side effects are there?● [12:44] What were the original uses for these pharmaceuticals? ● [16:07] What do people experience by taking these options?● [16:32] How do they work in the body?● [19:35] How are successful outcomes determined?● [21:58] Do these meds mean that you can eat what you want and stop working out?● [23:30] What is berberine? Is it really “nature's ozempic”? ● [25:32] What happens when people stop taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or other diet pills?● [27:00] How do these feed into the toxic diet culture we already have? ● [33:18] What is the real short cut?● [40:02] What are some supplements that may be helpful with weight loss in a way that improves health?KEY TAKEAWAYS:● Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro reduce the rate of gastric emptying so we feel fuller longer. Decreases hunger and appetite, increases fullness which gives reduced food consumption and weight loss. This could impact the nutrients that someone is actually getting creating a potential for malnutrition and a loss of muscle more than a loss of fat. ● BMI is not an indication of health or health outcomes. Those are better assessed by looking at body completion, how much of our body is fat, lean muscle, water, organs, etc. 5 Lifestyle Medicine Aspects:● Fitness (movement daily)● Nutrition (low glycemic impact foods and some supplementation)● Measuring body fat percentage (focus on change rather than the number) and Fasting glucose (ask dr. to do a fasting glucose test)● Address stress in your life● Stop smoking/drinking alcoholQUOTES: “What they're seeing with people on these medications is that it's 2/3 muscle loss, 1/3 fat loss. They might be a lower number on the scale but they are fatter at that lower number...that is not health." - Jenn Trepeck“You cannot supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Period. Supplements can help but if you're eating calorically dense, nutrient deficient foods, there are no supplements that can undo your food.” - Jenn Trepeck “I wish I was exaggerating when I said I think this is deadly and it's setting a deadly standard, and I'm beside myself over it.” - Jenn Trepeck “The real shortcut isn't any one thing. The real short cut is a combination of things, which are really lifestyle medicine's top 5.” - Jenn Trepeck“Lifestyle medicine is about shifting our habits and our lives to create health and energy and vitality…life to years and years to life.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Recommended Scale: Tanita and Omron Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram
June 27, 2023 - In 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed legislation restricting minors from purchasing over-the-counter diet pills and supplements. I get that it can be frustrating when it comes to weight loss struggles. I've had a few clients who have used diet pills in the past only to end up having even more struggles. In this episode, I'm going to be talking about a few of the dangers of diet pills and how they can affect your overall health. I get it, we feel that if we are overweight, we are risking our health…BUT do we really even know the cost these diet pills are putting on our health? Which is the lesser of 2 evils? If you know me, you may already know the answer. If not, don't worry, I'll be sure to bring it all into the light in this podcast. For individuals with a strong desire to lose or maintain their weight, diet pills may seem like a magical solution. The manufacturers of these products make fancy promises about the “magic” these drugs can do, but most of these claims are not backed up by clinical research. In fact, these drugs that promise to help you shed pounds or burn fat may hold hidden dangers to your health. In spite of the risks of using diet supplements, the demand for these products continues to rise, especially among individuals with eating disorders. I'm just going to throw a few of the dangers out there real quick such as addiction, increased risk for heart attacks and strokes, ineffectiveness, along with multiple different side effects…not to mention the lack of sustainability. It may look tempting, especially if you've been battling that scale for more than half your life...BUT, before you go popping that pill, I want you to listen to this podcast before you make ANY decision. Let's dive in…shall we?
Are the diet pills and supplements you take to offset that midnight chalupa habit doing you any favors? You wouldn't be alone in wondering. All over the world, people buy pills or supplements in hopes of preventing disease, improving their health, and losing weight. But do any of them really work? Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and fact-checker, comedian, and podcast host David C. Smalley break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: With 40% of Americans being obese, 70% overweight, and 100% duped by corporate greed for an easy, instant solution, it's no wonder diet pills and supplements are pitched as the greatest thing since sliced bread (and the bread is probably how you got like that). A self-administered injection of semaglutide (popularly branded as Wegovy or Ozempic) can provide up to 17% weight loss at a cost of over $1,300 per month. Side effects include possible thyroid tumors, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, kidney damage, and stomach pain. Fat blockers can reduce fat intake by 30%, but the weight loss is typically only around six pounds over two years. The diet supplement industry is largely unregulated by the FDA, so there's a risk of potentially harmful, unlabeled ingredients sneaking past protective scrutiny. Over-the-counter diet supplements are often BS, but green tea is a natural weight loss aid that can help block fat, suppress appetite, and help people lose weight. Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the corrupt and morally bankrupt American Academy of Pediatrics has announced new guidelines for dealing with childhood obesity. No surprise: they recommend drugs and surgery. We'll talk about that, and the medical industry's decades-long campaign to medicalize every aspect of the human condition. Also, the DOJ is investigating after classified documents from Joe Biden's time as Vice President were found stashed away. I guess we have to impeach Biden now. Those are the rules. Plus, schools across the country reinstate masking policies.
