EPISODE 59 DETAILS Bovine Tuberculosis Discovered In South Dakota & USDA Dietary Guidelines Tuberculosis Found In South Dakota Cattle Herd Bovine tuberculosis (TB) has been confirmed in South Dakota for the first time since 2021. According to State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson, the infected steer was initially identified in late October by meat inspectors during routine inspection at a Wisconsin packing plant. Records linked the steer to a Hamlin County feedlot which had marketed the animal.  The State Veterinarian's office is working closely with the feedlot owner as well as other producers who may have sold animals purchased by the feedlot, USDA officials, and area veterinarians to locate the steer's source herd. Necessary precautions are being taken to protect the health of South Dakota's cattle industry. Bovine TB is not currently a threat to food safety in the United States, thanks to milk pasteurization and comprehensive meat inspection programs. Bovine tuberculosis is a chronic, slowly progressive respiratory disease of cattle. Infected animals may transmit infection to other animals when in close proximity for prolonged periods. Cattle rarely exhibit visible signs of illness. The US has nearly eliminated bovine TB due to a cooperative eradication campaign and South Dakota has officially been recognized as free of the disease since 1982. Criticisms To The New Scientific Report On USDA Dietary Guidelines The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is providing access to a new Scientific Report that will assist two government agencies to develop the final Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030, which is expected to be published late next year. Several cattle organizations including The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) quickly responded to the report's recommendation that nutrition guidelines incorporate reduced consumption of red meat. NCBA President Mark Eisele said in a statement that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee ignored robust and rigorous scientific evidence about beef's essential nutrients and the foundational, positive role it plays in health as a preferred protein food in a variety of healthy diets for all Americans. The committee is offering the Scientific Report online and offers its “independent, evidence-based findings and advice” for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the USDA. The report, along with public comments and federal agency input, will inform the departments as they prepare the final document for publication. The Committee says it is focused on health equity to ensure that factors like socioeconomic position, race, ethnicity and culture are considered to the greatest extent possible when it comes to establishing the most effective report for all Americans. HHS and USDA plan to launch a 60-day public comment period and are encouraging the public to provide written comments on the committee's Scientific Report, the agencies said in the announcement referencing the online document, which is available HERE. Latest Beef Industry News European Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban The European Commission criticized Hungary's proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market. “No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU's scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved. The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments. Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill. Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections. NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA's Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides. Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA's Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS. Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey's Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas's Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. Selected from over 2,400 nominations across 410+ burgers, the contest's top ten burgers — two from each of the state's five regions — were judged on taste, appearance, cooking, and overall impression by an anonymous panel. The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. Updated every five years, the Dietary Guidelines inform federal policies on everything from school lunches to chronic disease prevention. Unfortunately, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is recommending that Americans reduce their consumption of red meat—including beef—and replace it with beans, peas, and lentils. Dr. McNeill explains why this recommended swap is so out-of-touch with the average American's wallet, tastes, and available options at the grocery store. Even worse, it can have unintended consequences for the health of Americans. Dr. Pate is a Professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He has held several administrative positions including Chair for the Department of Exercise Science, Associate Dean for Research at the Arnold School of Public Health, and Vice Provost for Health Sciences. Dr. Pate is an exercise physiologist with interests in physical activity and physical fitness in children and the health implications of physical activity. His research has been supported by NIH, CDC, the American Heart Association, and several private foundations and corporations. He coordinated the effort that led to the development of the recommendation on Physical Activity and Public Health of the CDC and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) (1995). He served on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee, and an Institute of Medicine panel that developed guidelines on prevention of childhood obesity. He currently serves as Chair of the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance. Today, we're going to dive into a topic that's been on my mind for the past 25 years as a fitness professional - our flawed nutrition guidelines and the ideas behind them. Do you ever wonder why our nutrition guidelines, which have only led to increased metabolic diseases, continue down the same path despite decades of failure? Well, there's a strong driving force behind it all. (Can you guess what it is?) Hit play to learn more! The famous 1979 food pyramid recommended 6 to 11 servings of grains, leading to weight gain. The guidelines were established by politicians and nutrition scientists, including Mark Hegsted who was paid by the Sugar Research Foundation to promote sugar and blame saturated fat for heart disease. Hegsted later became head of the USDA and drafted the nutrition guidelines. The food pyramid was released in 1980 and updated every 5 years. The nutrition guidelines have been influenced by politics and the food industry, including organizations like the USDA, Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Last year, two articles revealed the extent of industry influence over these organizations. 95% of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Council members had conflicts of interest with the food and pharmaceutical industries. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics became a pro-industry voice, accepting corporate contributions and investing in companies like Nestle and PepsiCo, even if it clashed with their original mission of public health. Academic institutions like Harvard and Tufts, heavily funded by corporations, have been recommending a low-fat, plant-based diet and vilifying meat, full-fat dairy, and saturated fats for decades. With 65% of the US diet being processed food and 80% of the US being metabolically unhealthy, it's clear that this isn't working. Eating whole foods is the solution. Artificial sweeteners, known more recently as non-nutritive or low-calorie sweeteners, have been a source of great hope. What could be better than enjoying sweetness in foods but without the calories? Sucralose, xylitol, stevia, saccharin, aspartame, there are a lot of them out there. You may add them to food yourself, you may consume them in beverages, and if not, there's a good chance they'll show up in foods that you buy. But, do they work and are they safe? Few know this area like Dr. Richard Mattes, distinguished Professor of Nutrition Science at Purdue University.  Interview Summary So Rick, thanks so much for joining us. You've done pioneering work on this area and there are a few people better positioned to discuss this topic, so I appreciate you joining us today. So let's start off with why do we need these sweeteners at all? Well, I think the primary driver here is concern about the consumption of nutritive sweeteners – sugars. It is the case that often sugars are consumed in foods that provide limited other nutritional value. So they add calories without nutrients. And then given an environment where there's concern about weight gain and obesity, there is a reasonable assumption that we can reduce sugar intake without compromising nutritional status. So, it's a good target for interventions to manage body weight. Low-calorie sweeteners, as you pointed out, are one approach that can be taken to reduce sugar intake without compromising the sensory qualities of foods. I think it's very well accepted that the sensory qualities of foods are really the primary driver of food choice. We as nutritionists would like to believe people make food choices based on nutrition. We recognize the importance of cost and convenience. But the reality is if a product does not have the right sensory properties, people just won't consume it. We have to pay attention to the sensory properties of foods. Added sugars are presently contributing about 13% of daily energy intake – so that's a very high percent without contributing a lot of nutrients. To give you a little more perspective, at the 75th percentile in the US population, that translates to about 400 kilocalories a day for males, about 300 kilocalories a day for females. If we use a 2,000 kilocalorie diet as sort of the standard, which is what's used on food packaging labels, that represents 20% for males and 15% of energy on a daily basis. It's very, very high. Now, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee from 2020 reviewed sweeteners and their relationship to body weight. In their modeling analyses they concluded that people can really only take in something on the order of 5 to 6% or so of energy from added sugars without going into positive energy balance. That is taking in more energy than we need and as a result, putting ourselves at risk for weight gain. That is based on what it would take to obtain all the necessary nutrients in the diet if we make smart food choices. There's very little discretionary room for added sugars. As a result, low-calorie sweeteners are a way to reduce total sugar intake, again, without compromising sensory quality. That makes good sense and those numbers are really quite striking. Can you give us a little bit of a sense of how much these low-calorie sweeteners are consumed and how they show up in the food supply? Well, the primary source is through sweetened beverages, but there is increasing use in solid foods as well. They are ubiquitous in the food supply, I think that's safe to say, but low calorie sweetened beverages are the primary source. There's been concern that these low-calorie sweeteners can disrupt carbohydrate metabolism and result in greater hunger and food intake. What do you think about that? Yes, this has been very extensively studied and my interpretation of the literature is that they do not disrupt carbohydrate metabolism. We know that when people consume nutritive sweeteners sugars, that they are absorbed, the blood sugar rises. That elicits the release of insulin as a way to get the sugar out of the blood and into our cells. When blood sugar levels drop and insulin levels are relatively high, that's viewed as a sort of metabolic signal that we should be hungry and be interested in eating again. However, my reading of the literature shows that low-calorie sweeteners do not elicit a rise in insulin, do not lead to a drop in blood sugar and as a result don't generate a hunger signal. But even if they did that, the question is, does a rise in blood sugar or a drop in blood sugar or a rise in insulin after a typical meal really serve as the driver, or the primary mechanism for generation of hunger signals? There's an experimental approach called euglycaemic clamp. We don't need to go into all of the details, but suffice it to say it's an approach that allows one to independently manipulate the level of glucose in the blood or the level of insulin in the blood. When those studies have been done, they demonstrate unequivocally that independent changes in glucose do not alter appetitive sensations, hunger, nor do independent manipulations of insulin. They undoubtedly change following a meal, but they are not the cause of the generation of hunger signals. So this gets right at the heart of a key question. Some people are saying that, when you consume these artificial sweeteners, they rev up the body in a way that makes you want to eat. You'll then consume as many calories as you might have if you'd been consuming sugar or maybe even overdo it. But you're saying there's not a biological basis for that in science. That's correct. I think where there is credibility to that scenario lies more in cognitive or psychological dimension. When people use a product or a food that is reduced in energy, and we require products that we purchase to label their energy content and often claims are made about them being low energy when they are, people are overly optimistic about the energy that they save when they consume these products. So they may then may be more inclined to indulge subsequent to that and overestimating the amount of energy they saved, they can indeed offset the benefit of substituting a low-calorie sweetener for a nutritive sweetener and result in higher energy intake. But that is not a biologically-driven phenomenon. It therefore requires more education in terms of how to use low-calorie sweeteners to better effect, rather than it being a biological basis that is kind of out of people's control. If people are consuming diet beverages for example, and they're getting accustomed to a high level of sweetness because they're consuming these throughout the day, does that generalize to other parts of their diet? Might they then like other things sweeter than they might have otherwise or have sort of a drive for these things? I think where there is credibility to that scenario lies more in cognitive or psychological dimension. When people use a product or a food that is reduced in energy – and we require products that we purchase to label their energy content and often claims are made about them being low energy when they are – people are overly optimistic about the energy that they save when they consume these products. So, they may be more inclined to indulge subsequent to that and overestimating the amount of energy they saved, they can indeed offset the benefit of substituting a low-calorie sweetener for a nutritive sweetener and result in higher energy intake. But that is not a biologically-driven phenomenon. It therefore requires more education in terms of how to use low-calorie sweeteners to better effect, rather than it being a biological basis that is kind of out of people's control. That seems like a really important question to nail down, doesn't it? Because what you say about salt and fat and the dairy products and things makes all the sense in the world. I know I've experienced myself with low fat dairy products compared to when I was a kid and people were drinking high-fat versions of milk and things. So if that's true and it does apply to sweetness, then you'd think the artificial sweeteners would be counterproductive because they keep people consuming sweet and not getting used to less of it over time. Does that make sense? That's a most interesting question and highly relevant right now. So there is a reasonable body of science on the effects of exposure to sensory qualities and the preferred level of that quality in foods for salt and for fat. If one consumes high salt levels, foods with high levels of salt and saltiness, they generally come to like and actually prefer foods that are high in salt. If you've gone on a diet that limits sensory exposure, it's not the amount of sodium actually consumed, it's the sensory exposure that determines this. If you limit sensory exposure to salt, you can actually come to prefer low salt foods. The same is true for fat. Probably many people have exposed themselves to low fat dairy products, for example, and over time actually come to prefer them to the higher fat versions. But the story for sweeteners is still very much unknown. There is a small amount of evidence based on short-term studies with small sample sizes that would suggest that scenario holds, at least in kids, but the largest and probably best-controlled study to date fails to find an effect of exposure to sweetness on the preference for sweetness of foods. In contrast, they find that it alters the sensory perception (that is the intensity of sweetness) but not the preference or the liking of sweetness. So the jury is still out on that scenario. Let me ask one of the bottom line question:  Are low-calorie sweeteners associated with lower or higher body weight? Yes, that's the logical conclusion. The question is whether sweetness is indeed different from salt and fat and how exposure effects work. Okay, good to know. We've been talking about these sweeteners as a group, but if we start to separate them, do the different ones have different effects on the body? So there is ammunition for different perspectives on this question. The epidemiologic data, that is the data based on surveys, pretty consistently shows that there is a positive association between consumption of low-calorie sweeteners and indices of adiposity, body fatness, things like body mass index or body weight or waist circumference. However, the evidence also in my opinion quite convincingly and strongly shows from randomized control trials that consumption of low-calorie sweeteners is associated with lower indices of adiposity, BMI, body weight. In the sort of hierarchy of scientific rigor, randomized controlled trials are viewed as stronger than these cohort studies, these survey studies. In my opinion, the strongest science shows that they're associated with lower body weight rather than higher. I'm really happy you brought up that study because it's clearly a landmark study. It's nice that you're being modest about it, but boy, it sure opens the door to some very interesting and important questions. I appreciate you doing this study and describing it today. If these compounds are having different effects because they're different biologically, which would make sense that they wouldn't all behave the same once they get inside the body. I'm assuming the same thing would probably be true for safety concerns. I know over the years, there have just been lots of things in the press about worries, about safety of these products. What do you think about that? Do you think these concerns are merited? So this is a very interesting area because we tend to speak about all low-calorie sweeteners as though they were kind of one thing. And it's true, they all impart sweetness with very little or no energy. But, does that mean that they all have the same effect in the body? We know, again, from other kinds of chemicals that that's not the case. For example, salt, sodium chloride, tastes salty, but is associated with elevation of blood pressure. Potassium chloride also tastes salty, but the potassium is associated with lower blood pressure. The fact that they share a sensory property doesn't mean that they have the same physiological effect. Yet we view all these different low-calorie sweeteners that have entirely different chemical structures as though they're the same thing. I think that the time has come to look at them individually. We conducted a study with Kelly Higgins as the first author, and compared four low-calorie sweeteners and their effects on body weight. People consumed these on a daily basis for 12 weeks. We monitored body weight, as well as things like hunger and appetite and so on, but the most important endpoint was body weight. One of the groups consumed sugar. We expected that if we asked people to consume sugar on a daily basis that they would gain weight and indeed they did. The interesting finding of the study though was when people consumed saccharin, they also gained body weight and at a rate that was comparable to the sugar. In contrast, when they consumed Splenda, they lost body weight. By the end of 12 weeks, there was a significant difference in body weight between those consuming Splenda and those consuming saccharin. So, what this suggests is that there may indeed be substantive differences in how we respond to these different commercially available and widely consumed sweeteners. I want to emphasize that this is the one and only study that has addressed this issue and we should never believe a single study, no matter how well done it is, until it's replicated. I think this is an intriguing hypothesis. I think there is logic to viewing them as potentially different. Again, they all have different chemical structures, but this requires verification. I guess because these products are used by so many millions of people, you'd think if there were negative effects, we'd know by now. But on the other hand, there are some of these products relatively new to the market compared to others like Splenda. And if this may not have immediate effects but long-term effects after somebody's consumed them after many years, we may not know yet, I'm assuming. But it sounds like from your reading of the science, there are no negative effects of these at this moment. Two levels of response to that. First, I'm not a toxicologist, so you should be cautious in interpreting my perspective on it. But these sweeteners have been highly studied by the regulatory agencies of many, many nations, the European Union, the US, Australia, Canada, Japan, around the world. And uniformly, they have concluded that when used within reasonable amounts, they are safe. And of course, that stipulation, when used in reasonable amounts, may be open to debate among people with different views in this area. But it's a qualification that would be used for any food or any nutrient. Any nutrient consumed at excessive levels becomes a drug and has effects very different from its role as a nutrient. So it's not unusual to put that qualification on such a claim. However, yes, they're different chemicals. They should be evaluated independently. As a particular sweetener is petitioned for approval, regulatory agencies do review the science for its safety independently. So for the commercially available products, I think it's safe to conclude that they are safe, but as new products are developed, they will have to be evaluated on their own merits as well. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (01/30/2023): 3:05pm- In his latest New York Post editorial, attorney Jonathan Turley argues that the Department of Justice needs to immediately investigate documents President Joe Biden gave to the University of Delaware. Turley writes, “[t]he university is sitting on Biden documents due to a cynical 2012 arrangement… The University of Delaware has been used for years to shield potentially embarrassing documents from public review for the Biden family, including allegations that the president engaged in sexual harassment or assault as a member of the Senate. The university effectively agreed to serve as a type of lockbox for the Bidens to prevent a review of his senatorial records as he ran for higher office.” Since it has now been determined that Biden improperly stored classified materials at both his Wilmington, DE home and his University of Pennsylvania office, isn't it reasonable to conclude classified material may be improperly housed at the University of Delaware as well? Why hasn't the Justice Department acted? 3:25pm- According to the Washington Examiner, a Pennsylvania jury has found Pastor Mark Houck not guilty. The pro-life father charged with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for protesting outside of an abortion clinic was notably arrested at his home during an over-the-top FBI raid. Pastor Bill Devlin calls in to describe the scene in the courtroom—and talks about the nationwide implications of this decision.  4:05pm- On CNN's State of the Union, host Dana Bash spoke with Representatives Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN)—all of whom were removed from prestigious House committee assignments by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Rep. Omar claimed she “wasn't aware” that her past comments could be considered anti-Semitic. Meanwhile, Rep. Schiff conceded he “should have been more clear” when denying contact with whistleblowers. 4:10pm- While appearing on Face the Nation, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy called out Margaret Brennan and the media for never referring to Democrats like Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Bennie Thompson (D-MS), or Jamie Raskin (D-MD) as “election deniers” despite their public questioning of the validity of past elections won by Republicans.  4:35pm- On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers and will now be headed to “The Big Game”—Rich isn't allowed to call the game anything else for legal reasons… 4:45pm- On Friday, Memphis officials released several disturbing videos showing police officers fatally beating Tyre Nichols. The video depicts officers hitting Nichols with batons following a traffic stop for alleged reckless driving. Fox News host Dan Bongino called on Conservatives and Libertarians to speak out against what happened to Nichols—explaining we need to stand for life and liberty. 4:50pm- Despite all police officers involved in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols being Black, members of the far-left have called the horrifying event an example of “white supremacy.” MSNBC's Mehdi Hasan called on a renewed push for defunding the police.  5:05pm- On Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, actor Bryan Cranston attempted to defend the adoption of critical race theory (CRT) in grade school classrooms. Zeoli explains the underlying ambition of CRT is Marxism and the abandonment of capitalism.  5:25pm- On HBO's Real Time, comedian Bill Maher mocked Hollywood celebrities who routinely warn of climate change but continue to fly on private jets. How can they be taken seriously? 5:30pm- Disney is permanently closing Splash Mountain—citing the rides “racist back story, drawn from the 1946 musical film “Song of the South,” writes The New York Times. Fans of the ride have begun buying/selling jars of water from the ride for as much as $150! 5:45pm- Over the weekend, President Donald Trump said it would be “disloyal” of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to run for President in 2024. While speaking in New Hampshire, Trump also joked about Hunter Biden's incriminating laptop.  5:50pm- Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford—newly appointed to President Biden's USDA 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee—spoke with Leslie Stahl on 60 Minutes. Dr. Stanford claimed obesity is primarily driven by genetics and can't be treated with diet and exercise. 6:05pm- While speaking with GBH News Boston, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) refused to explicitly endorse Kamala Harris for Vice President should President Joe Biden choose to run for reelection in 2024.  6:10pm- Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press, Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) defended parents who, after appearing at school board meetings and allegedly acting disruptively, had been targeted by FBI officials. Why was the FBI involved at all? Food and diet-related chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some types of cancer pose a major public health problem. Today, more than half of adults have one or more diet-related chronic diseases.How do we know whether what we are eating is medicine or is toxic and leading to chronic diseases.  To address this question the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) was set by The U.S Federal government to provide dietary advice for the public for more than 100 years.In 1977, after years of discussion, scientific review, and debate, the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, led by Senator George McGovern, released Dietary Goals for the United States. The Dietary Goals recommended:To avoid overweight, consume only as much energy as is expended; if overweight, decrease energy intake and increase energy expenditure.Increase the consumption of complex carbohydrates and “naturally occurring” sugars from about 28 percent of intake to about 48 percent of energy intake.Reduce the consumption of refined and processed sugars by about 45 percent to account for about 10 percent of total energy intake.Reduce overall fat consumption from approximately 40 percent to about 30 percent of energy intake.n 1980, the first publication of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans was released. Since then, the Dietary Guidelines have become the cornerstone of Federal food and nutrition guidance. Who sets the guidelines and do they have any conflicts of interest. This was the question asked by Dr Paulo Serodio who has a PhD in Political Economy from the University of Essex and held research positions at Northeastern University (Boston, USA), University of Oxford (Oxford, UK) and University of Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain).  His vast research experience is in network science, econometrics, data analysis, text analysis and machine learning. The 2020-2025 Guidelines are centred around the philosophy of  Make every bite count and it is up to the individual to make healthy food and beverage choices.The guidelines matter as they set the tone for global nutrition recommendations. From the DGA website:"The guidelines aims are on disease prevention and health promotion, the information in the Dietary Guidelines is used to develop Federal food, nutrition, and health policies and programs. It also serves as the basis for nutrition education materials designed for the public and for the nutrition education components of the USDA and HHS food programs. State and local governments, schools, the food industry, other businesses, community groups, and media also use Dietary Guidelines information to develop programs, policies, and communication for the general public. Nutrition and health professionals are encouraged to promote the Dietary Guidelines as a means of helping Americans to focus on eating a healthful diet and being physically active at each life stage. A fundamental premise of the 2020- 2025 Dietary Guidelines is that just about everyone, no matter their health status, can benefit from shifting food and beverage choices to better support healthy dietary patterns."It also is the basis for Federal nutrition education materials designed for the public and for the nutrition education components of USDA and HHS nutrition programs. State and local governments, schools, the food industry, other businesses, community groups, and media also use Dietary Guidelines information to develop programs, policies, and communication for the general public.
