In this episode of The Book Fix, Yajaira and Cheli review The Strawberry Patch Pancake House by Laurie Gilmore, the fourth book in the Dream Harbor series. They dive into the signature “insta-love” setup the series is known for—and question whether it ever really works for them. The book follows Archer, a Michelin-starred chef living in Paris, who's suddenly called to Dream Harbor to raise a daughter he didn't know existed after the mother passes away. Enter Iris, a yoga instructor who ends up becoming Olive's nanny—not because she's qualified, but because small-town connections and financial need make it happen. Join the besties as they discuss whether or not they would recommend this book!Support the showOur Linktree: https://linktr.ee/thebookfix?utm_source=linktree_admin_sharebecome our Patron ♡ https://www.patreon.com/BookFixbuy us a book ♡ https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thebookfixBusiness Inquiries: thebookfixpodcast@gmail.comfollow us on Tiktok! ♡ https://www.tiktok.com/@thebookfix

The Pancake House, and why won't "Latin X" people ever give me ketchup at the drive thru? Florida, Christmas, and beyond. Jack Ryan season 3 stinks. Heat 2 ("tWoOo?!") was an interesting read.
Abby was brought from Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of three to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Her parents had a dream of owning and operating a small motel. From when Abby was three until she went off through college, her parents owned and operated a 12-unit motel a block and a half off the beach. Abby learned from an early age that she would need to work hard at whatever she did if she ever wanted to achieve her goals. This lesson was reinforced throughout her life. Abby's desire to be self-sufficient drove her to begin working at the Pancake House, which was located just a few blocks up the street from where they lived, despite the fact that her parents were always there to lend their support. Kim, on the other hand, grew up in western New York outside of Buffalo. She grew up with two very loving parents who were able to be present for various activities, sporting events, and educational events, which impacted Kim's competence and overall skill set in the years to come. Kim's father was adamant that they discuss one aspect of the news around the globe at the dinner table each night. That eventually encouraged Kim to become active and interested in politics and public service. She also had a mother who was actively engaged in ensuring that they were giving back to the community through various church-related activities or neighborhood community activities. Why did Kim and Abby choose to get a law degree? In all her illustrious career, what was the biggest failure of Kim? What was the most challenging issue Abby worked on? Check out Kim and Abby as they share their journey in this new episode of the State Lobbying Heroes.

Christopher Garcia From their website in 1957, Jack and Anne holder sold their Dairy Queen business in Roseburg, Oregon, and moved their family to the Valley of heart's delight. And open Uncle John's Pancake House in Santa Clara. I seem to remember that vaguely. And I do remember a coffee shop on, I believe, Scott, that seemed to be in that same realm. It was a wonderful, wonderful place. Christopher Garcia But what I'm actually more connected to was the holders country in at the Old Town and Country village. And that was across the street from Valleyfair. And what is now today, Santana row. And I only went there a few times, there were usually long lines, particularly on the weekends, but from 1967 through 1999. Holders country inn was one of the primary places you would go for breakfast in the morning. Places like mini gourmet was sort of in a different realm. And just a little later, it informed how places like Stacks would do their breakfasts. The portions were large and delicious, particularly the pancakes were fantastic. I usually get pancakes and sausage and do pigs in a blanket. Of course, the biscuits and gravy were also phenomenal. What's wonderful is that even when they were forced to move to relocate the destruction of the town and country to be replaced by Santana row in 1989, meant that a number of places had to leave. And they found the spot on DeAnza Boulevard in a prime location. And at that point, it wasn't quite as prime. I believe the Home Depot was already there. I think what is now a Japanese sushi place at that point might have still been the Carl's Jr. There was another Japanese restaurant, I believe a couple of plant stores where they're still the Trader Joe's was not there yet for sure. Nor the Popeyes for that matter. You had the Taco Bell. Couple of other places, I think there was a KFC. And you had to pretend your arms just a little bit further down. It was a solid part of town. And that part was definitely going to be growing and growing rather quickly. And what ended up happening was it became the breakfast spot once we lost the original Pancake House, which is just on the other side of 85. And again, even more of a following when Clark's closed. These were all replaced mostly by new businesses that were drawing in sort of the family get the Trader Joe's is an excellent example. But you also had the CVS, the things up and down there. I think in 99, probably through about 2007. Maybe less than that. You had diddums, for example. And you had the new library that in the same ish neighborhood. It was turning that area into more and more of a not necessarily destination, but a place where you would stop when you're doing a dozen other things. And holders was phenomenal. There's still one on Saratoga Avenue, which opened in 1995, which was at the original hole the holders was in the Paseo and when they knocked down the original to build the new one, which now has the AMC and all that move down which is a good thing. Actually. That one still active, still wonderful. Lots of outdoor seating very important. It's places like these that we lost when we lost the original Pancake House that a lot of them have been going away lately. They're a step up from Denny's. But the most important thing about them is they are dependable family type restaurants but are a level above your Applebee's your Denny's your things like that because they are serving. I don't want to say more genuine food but it's it's hearty. It has a authenticity towards this idea of what an American Christopher Garcia breakfast is. I think one of the things that I really enjoy is that they very Are you pointedly note that their family of six sons and a daughter are all still in the business that their parents founded? That's wonderful to see. Because that sort of continuity leads to the traditions of reasonable prices of good food of great dishes that need to continue on down the line. I'm sad to see this one go to Silicon Valley. Hopefully they'll rebuild. But honestly, even if they don't, I'll have many many great memories of stuffing my face full of pancakes at holders country and on data Boulevard. It is Greensboro, North Carolina. The year is 1968. I am a senior at James B. Dudley High School. We're all just trying to find something to focus on. At least I am. Because we were left feeling 'some kind of way' when they killed Martin Luther King, Jr. last month. I know I'm just trying to focus on graduating. I'm focused on going to college - and I want to make some money. So I saw in the paper where Tex and Shirley's Pancake House was looking for a waitress. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/04/binary-system-podcast-123-wtnv-126-a-door_ajar-part-3/ This week we're recapping the final (?) episode of Night Vale's "A Door Ajar" story arc. (We're wondering if there's still one more episode in the arc, because we've got a lot of unanswered questions: what's Carlos hiding? What exactly killed the Marine Biologists? The heck is up with the Pancake House?) After that we set up our plan for next week's recording, which is to talk about last season's Doctor Who if (WHEN!) Elizabeth finally watches the Christmas episode, and American Gods since Kathryn's almost finished that too. We'd talk about the latest season of Jessica Jones but Kathryn hasn't watched it yet, partly because she's been watching the Punisher instead, but mostly because Elizabeth isn't recommending Jessica Jones to anyone. She does recommend the Joel Hodgson episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The outro music this week was a clip from Flashdance by Podington Bear. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Podington_Bear/Liquid_Gold_Box_Set_Disc_2/Flashdance Correction: When we said the Joel Hodgson episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was season one episode 19, we meant the first season available on Netflix, because as we've found out the show already had NINE SEASONS on the digital network Cracked. We haven't seen any of those episodes of course, but we're sure they're good too.

This week on The Business Over Beer Podcast, we go after the Squatchers with Larry Sharpe, Managing Director of The Neo-Sage Group, Host of The Sharpe Way and 2018 New York State Gubernatorial Candidate for the Libertarian Party. Larry shares with us his journey to entrepreneurship, which started well before he owned his first business. After his father passed away when he was just 12 years old, and in need of positive male role models, Larry found what he was looking for in the US Marine Corp, serving for 7 years. After leaving the Marines, Larry helped his mom, an addict, get out of prison. With a felony conviction, Larry watched her become a hostage to every job she had, ultimately starting a business with her so she could be the boss and take control of her life. A business that she ran all the way until her retirement. Prost! In this episode: As leaders move up, they tend to be very good technically but not very good emotionally. Leaders are good at communicating accurately, but not being responsible for the results of that communication. For modern leaders to be successful, technical skills are no longer enough, soft skills are required. The only way our country heals is through a third party mediator, and the Libertarian Party is the only party that doesn't force you to convert. As a Libertarian, you can be as liberal or as conservative as you want to be, just don't force others to be the same. If you're an entrepreneur and you're doing something you hate, you're doing something wrong. Larry was always the #2 sales rep at every sales job he had because he spent time helping others to do well, realizing that he is even better at training and being a teacher. Optimism is the best indicator of success for a sales rep. Leadership today is not management. Management is processes and resources, which can be learned in school, and computers can manage better than humans anyway. Leadership is people. In today's world we need a whole lot more of people's brains, we need more than just their arms and legs. We need initiative and imagination. The Libertarian ideals fit perfectly to what he was already training; modern day leadership, post industrial leadership is about ownership mentality and volunteerism. 134: Mike Ramos: Retired Olympic Decathlete who competed on the USA team for many years, overcame depression and the negative impact of alcohol on his life and has advanced as a businessman and an inspiration for others. Mike Ramos Mike Ramos was able to transcend the sport of track and field in a major way that very few ambitious athletes ever get to do...playing for his country of the United States of America in the world-renowned global Olympics competition. Mike discusses his early achievements: “In high school I was a three-sport athlete. My first love was football and it just kind of turned out that I was just really good at track. So that was pretty much my avenue. I did five events in high school and did well there. State champion in pretty much everything I did. It was kind of a natural progression for me to get into the Decathlon.” On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Mike Ramos, Retired Olympic Decathlete who competed on the USA team. How did Mike move from high school sports to NCAA-level college track? “People from the North West go to this camp and it was headed by a guy named Dr. Peterson, who was out of Seattle and he had a place in Montana and he thought it would be a great idea to have this track camp in Seeley Lake. Anyway, long story short, Ken Shannon is at the same camp I’m at. I’m headed to UCLA and he goes, ‘No, no, no, no. You are coming to the UW.’ So I just really hit it off with Ken, broke off my engagement with UCLA, ended up at the UW with Ken Shannon, and the rest is history.” What You Will Learn: How did it get to the point that Mike Ramos saw that he could have a path to the Olympics? “There are not that many scholarships in track and field. So, I come in to the University of Washington on a half-ride. Ken Shannon tells me before the national meet that I have to place in the top 5 at Nationals to get a full-ride. So, he wasn’t expecting it. I think I was the only one that was expecting it. As a freshman, I ended up getting 3rd at the NCAAs, which was a big deal and really kind of catapulted me forward. Physically, I still had a long way to go. But for me that was a really big mental thing for me, knowing that I could compete with anybody at any school as a freshman.” Mike Ramos shares his impressive achievements from not only the University of Washington, but also during the Olympics: “As a freshman, I ended up 3rd in the NCAAs. Next year I was 2nd in the NCAAs. Won the NCAAs my third year and I set the NCAA record, which stood for 14 years. My senior year was Olympic year, so, I took the NCAAs off so I didn’t actually go. I was first alternate in 1984. I was first in the US in 1985, 1986, and 1987 in the Decathlon. In 1988 I was ranked going first. I was ranked first going into that meet. Also, in 1987 I was ranked 5th in the world.” What was the turning point that brought Mike Ramos’ Olympic career to an end? “My story as far as what happened to me was in 1988 the trials were in Indianapolis. Everything was going great. I was leading the trials. It ended up raining in Indy and we moved the high-jump indoors and I struggled with the high-jump.” How was Mike Ramos’ life affected by his exit from his Olympic year? “I’m telling you, through disappointment, through heartache, there’s growth, and I didn’t realise the growth for many, many, many years. I didn’t realise why that happened. But I’m a believer in the universe hands you things and you deal with them and you grow from them and that is exactly what I did.” What led to Mike Ramos’ celebration of his one year of sobriety and not gambling, that he calls the best year of his life? “I had a lot of depression with the drinking. I was questioning everything. I would have a hangover and I would be questioning everything about my life. Was I a good father? All these things that I shouldn’t have been questioning. I went on a fishing trip and I ended up drinking too much, gambling that night and I was driving home the next day and I was hungover and I was depressed and I just looked in the mirror and I said, ‘Never again. I’m never going to feel like this again.’” Being Transparent About Pain How has sharing pain with an online post been a positive uplifting experience in Mike’s life? “It’s an awesome place to be where you can just lay your stuff out there and be ok with it. The rewards you get from that are absolutely incredible. They are incredible. When I made that post, I get Mark Pattison to call me 30 years later and say, ‘What’s up?’ You start to connect with people on a different level.” Paul’s Pancake Parlor During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Mike Ramos also discusses owning Paul’s Pancake Parlor in Montana, offering 17 different types of pancakes, as well as all three meals of the day that are homemade. “It’s a little mom and pop. It’s 120 seats. It’s been there since 1963. This guy named Paul Gjording started it. My mom was his right-hand woman I guess, starting in ‘63. She ran the place for him I would until 1980 or so. Then he retired, sold it to her. She had it for 19 years. Then in 1998 she sold it to me. So this is my 21st, almost 22nd year doing it.” Links to Additional Resources: Paul’s Pancake Parlor: becausepancakes.com

From Mexico News Daily, an update on the highway between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta… Mexico News Daily | Wednesday, February 14, 2018 New Nayarit highway links Jala, Compostela 54-kilometer stretch reduces travel time between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta [caption id="attachment_2547" align="aligncenter" width="1070"] Guadalajara to Vallarta Highway Map[/caption] A new 5-billion-peso (US $269 million) stretch of highway in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit will help to reduce travel time between Guadalajara and the resort city of Puerto Vallarta. The four-lane, 54-kilometer road runs between the municipalities of Jala and Compostela, cutting the journey between the two tourist destinations to just over 30 minutes. An additional 14-kilometer stretch of road goes into the center of the second of the two pueblos mágicos, or magic towns. The federal Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) estimates that more than 6,400 vehicles will use the new road on a daily basis and it will benefit 110,000 residents who live in the region. At an official opening ceremony yesterday, President Enrique Peña Nieto said that 39 of 52 highway projects his administration committed to build have now been completed. “This government has gone to work and it has fulfilled [its commitments], that is what we have done in the whole country,” he said. The president also recognized the impact that the new highway will have on improving connectivity between the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. [caption id="attachment_2518" align="alignleft" width="300"] Javier Avila, Taxi to Mayto[/caption] Speaking of El Tuito and Mayto, Maria Santander who runs the Galeria Coppelia, make sure you listen to that podcast with Maria. She, well, all of the people I interviewed, Maria, Matty, Jesse and Javier were so wonderful and really gave us such a diverse overview of El Tuito and Mayto and Tehaumixtle. And anyway, Maria reminded me about something I had totally forgotten about. She wrote me… “Don't forget, Barry Kessler, while we were doing the interview at my Gallery, he got a flat tire on his way to get you, and sent the lovely Transito cop in Tuito over to let us know he would come for you shortly! I thought that was pretty cool of both of them!” So true Maria, so true! [caption id="attachment_2516" align="alignright" width="300"] Javier's Card Taxi to Mayto[/caption] Totally cool of the local cops to stop by and deliver a message, personally to Maria and me. Letting us know about Javier’s whereabouts. You know, where I come from, this is totally unheard of. In Mexico? Not to unusual believe it or not. Listener Email From Alberta, Canada [caption id="attachment_2282" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] La Trez Cuartoz, Puerto Vallarta[/caption] I got this funny email from Mama Patti that I wanted to read to you. Here goes… Hello there from sunny southern Alberta, Canada (not!!!) I am Merv's wife and wanted to thank you for your podcast. We love the boys very much and thought you would enjoy a funny story from their time here in Canada. We tend to make a little noise in our neighborhood from time to time... all good, just music and we've been quite surprised that the authorities have never paid us a visit. Well, that changed one night when La Trez Cuartoz were in the house and Fehr decided it was karaoke night. Apparently, our neighbors will put up with almost anything but us on the microphone. For the record, Fernando was singing when they showed up, so we're blaming it on him. [caption id="attachment_2297" align="alignleft" width="300"] La Regadera[/caption] That’s pretty funny. Remember Fernando liked to sing Karaoke in the shower? Not really. The plave is called La Regadera, which means The Shower in Spanish. It’s in Downtown Vallarta? I’ll put a map in the show notes but it’s right on Morelos, behind La Dulce Vida Italian Restaurant on the Malecon and not too far from Mandala and the loud nightclubs on the Malecon that stay open and they party till 4 or five in the morning. So thank you Patti. That’s great dirt on Fernando. Just the sort of inside information we like on the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. Embed La Regadera There’s so much more, including a couple of other letters from listeners, but I need to get to our guest. JR for one told me early on that he would hook me up with Gil, way back when I started the Podcast. My buddy, and friend of the show Reggie Bellu said I need to interview Gil. Last May, I sent him an email asking him if I could interview him and he said he was unfortunately closed for the summer and wanted to know if I wanted to interview for a job. Ha! This time down, I was fortunate to get a chance to visit with Gil at his shop, Lucy's CuCu Cabaña, located on Basilio Badillo, on the South Side of Puerto Vallarta. I have a map in the show notes, but for a landmark, let’s use Memo’s Pancake House is right next door to Lucy’s. But look, it’s tiny, and unobtrusive. It’s just not easy to find so yeah, Memo’s Pancake House. So let’s get right to 295, Basilio Badillo, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and visit with the funny guy of Puerto Vallarta, Author and businessman Gil Gevins. Well now it has a new vista and that is right on the beach where you get the same Vista Grill Menu, and the fantastic Vista Grill service and it’s right there on the beach with a dramatic view of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course at La Palapa you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 24th of July, 2017. Mexico Announces New Laptop, Tablet Security On US Flights Vallarta Daily News July 19, 2017 Laptops and tablets on U.S.-bound flights from Mexico will be subjected to heightened carry-on security measures beginning Wednesday at the request of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Mexican authorities announced. Mexico’s Transportation Department said in a statement that the measures apply to “electronics larger than a cellphone.” So they are talking about your ipads and your laptops folks. The Article Continues.... The department recommended that passengers travel with as few of those devices as possible in carry-on bags. It did not give details on the checks other to say they will take place separately from baggage, without cases or covers. In March, U.S. authorities banned cabin electronics on departing flights from 10 airports in the Middle East over concerns extremists could hide bombs inside of laptops. Okay well we all know what this is all about, it's about selling more cool, expensive equipment to airports around the world. Wow, some big x-ray scanning firm is making a killing here. I wonder what concerned congressman or Senator is counting his Benjamin's. You have to believe somebody’s getting some cool cash siphoned into their re-election fund. Look let’s be clear, in today's laptops and tablets, there's just no room in the body of the laptop to fit anything shy of a thin sheet of paper. I mean, there's no room in there to fit a bomb. Now in the day, you could easily fit an ounce of weed into the battery compartment of your older model laptops, I mean, so I’ve been told, but those days are over my friends. Those days are long gone. New highway closed at least two weeks Rain-induced landslides close brand-new Jala-Compostela highway in Nayarit. Brand-new sections of road on the highway between Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, were closed due to landslides last weekend, and could reopen in 15 to 20 days, says the Nayarit office of the federal Secretariat of Communications and Transportation. Heavy rains have been blamed for the slides on the Jala-Compostela and Ramal-Compostela highways, which were initially expected to remain closed for a month. Crews will remove some 50,000 cubic meters of material from hillsides above the highway as a temporary measure to get traffic moving again before further work is done to stabilize the ground. At least one 20-meter-high berm will be constructed as a retaining wall. This is a very hard-working family and I just love the food here. It is just so delicious. Steaks and seafood and Mexican Fusion. You will hear in this interview, Fernando Pena talk about how he got started in the restaurant business, selling food out of the front door of the family home… Tacos, quesadillas, and typical Mexican food, and basically serving the neighbors, and with a little encouragement from his customers and tourists alike, he changed around the menu and the business took off like a rocket. They were getting noticed by tourists and became overnight sensations… and When I asked him about the history of the restaurant, I didn’t expect to hear that the place was a barber shop before Fernando became a chef.
