Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Drop us some Fan Mail. Thanks!Raising kids while caring for aging parents is more common than ever—and often overwhelming. We talk with Robyn Wind, the GRAND Voices Support Coordinator for the National Center on Grandfamilies at Generations United, about the realities of sandwich generation caregiving and practical ways foster, adoptive, and kinship families can find support. In this episode, we discuss:Can we start with a working definition of the term “sandwich generation”?How have you seen that definition evolve in recent years? From your work with the National Center on Grandfamilies and Generations United, what are you seeing right now that suggests this is becoming a bigger issue? What are the most common pressures you hear caregivers talk about?Where do you see caregivers feeling the most “pulled apart” between generations for whom they are caring? What are the moments when they feel like they can't meet everyone's needs at once? Are there differences in how this shows up for: Parents of young children vs. teens? Kinship caregivers or grandparents raising grandchildren? Many of our listeners are already parenting children with trauma or complex needs. How does that layer onto sandwich caregiving? Do you see unique challenges for kinship caregivers who may already be caring for grandchildren and are now also caring for aging spouses or siblings? What are some ways systems unintentionally fail these families? Where do they tend to fall through the cracks? What would better support look like if systems were truly designed for multigenerational families? What are the early signs that a caregiver is stretched too thin and at risk? What does realistic self-care actually look like in this season of life? How do you advise the caregivers you support to balance guilt or feelings of inadequacy, given that there is SO much need on both sides of their sandwich? What supports should caregivers try to put in place early? How can families share this sandwich-caring experience more effectively, instead of having one person carry it all? What resources or programs from Generations United should caregivers know about? What strengths do you see in sandwich generation families that we don't talk about enough? Send us Fan Mail#385 - We runners love a challenge! So this week, I'm talking about 12 of the most dangerous trails in the US. They are dangerous for different reasons; some trails have huge elevation gains in short distances, while others have tricky and possibly dangerous trails while others are home to dangerous animals. Which one of these trails frighten you the most? You'll find out which one scares me the most! PS: I didn't include those trails that could be considered mountain climbing as that's not hiking or trail running. Also, I have individual episodes on the longest trails in the US and will continue those episodes on separate episodes. After 70 episodes, I've noticed a pattern that keeps showing up in every corner of longevity, wellness, and medicine: people don't fail because they “don't care.” They fail because the signal is buried under hype, and because perfectionism makes the basics feel impossible to sustain. So I step back and share a simple framework for living long and well: treat evidence like a compass, treat hype like a detour, and treat perfectionism like a parking brake.I walk through how to read health evidence without getting lost. Randomized controlled trials vs observational studies, replication, meta-analyses, and the most important filter of all: are we looking at meaningful outcomes like fewer heart attacks, better function, clearer thinking, and longer life, or are we just watching biomarkers move. We also revisit how research in stable coronary artery disease forced a shift away from the intuitive “fix the plumbing” story and back toward the unglamorous risk factors that actually drive health. Then we get practical about what to do when averages don't map cleanly onto you. Using sleep and melatonin as an example, we explain a careful N-of-1 approach, including the power of stopping and restarting so you can tell whether a change truly helps. From there, we break down the “hype equation” using mitochondrial health and NAD claims to show how plausible mechanisms, credentials, anecdotes, and incentives can make weak evidence feel strong. Finally, we make the case for “good enough” health: the 80-20 moves that deliver most of the benefit, plus the mindset that leaves room for joy. If this helps, subscribe, share it with a friend who's tired of wellness noise, and leave a review so more people can find the compass.Send us Fan Mail

What tree begins life looking more like a tuft of grass, survives repeated fires for years on the forest floor, and then suddenly bolts toward the canopy in a remarkable growth spurt? The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is one of the most unique and ecologically important tree species in North America. Once dominating the coastal plains of the southeastern United States, longleaf pine forests have been reduced to less than 5% of their historic range. Yet these forests remain among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the continent. In this episode of SilviCast, we explore the fascinating life history of longleaf pine and the silvicultural practices being used to restore these iconic forests. Join us for a conversation with Steve Jack, Executive Director of Boggy Slough Conservation Area, who shares insights from decades of longleaf pine restoration work across the southern United States. Guest on the Episode:Steve Jack, Ph.D.Director of the Boggy Slough Conservation AreaDr. Steve Jack is the founding executive director of the Boggy Slough Conservation Area (BSCA), a 19,000-acre property near Lufkin, Texas owned by the T.L.L. Temple Foundation. In that role Steve leads the foundation's vision for BSCA “to serve as a model of excellence for East Texas through ecological research and outreach to promote conservation, management, and stewardship of natural resources.” Prior to BSCA, Steve spent over two decades at the Jones Center at Ichauway in southwest Georgia, focused on the management and restoration of longleaf pine. When Frederick Douglass left Belfast in 1845, only seven years after escaping slavery, he declared: "Wherever else I feel myself to be a stranger, I will remember I have a home in Belfast." That remarkable statement from a Black abolitionist finding radical welcome in a 19th-century Irish city is the beating heart of North Star, the immersive musical and theatrical experience that Northern Ireland-based DJ, broadcaster, and creative producer Kwame Daniels brings to New York's Irish Arts Center, June 3–21.Irish Stew cohosts Martin Nutty and John Lee met Kwame at the Irish Arts Center a few days before opening night and recorded this episode in the IAC LibraryHe relates that his journey to Belfast began in a Ghanaian household in East London, where identity was worn proudly inside the home and navigated carefully beyond it. "As soon as we entered the house again, it was absolutely back to the background, the roots, and the culture," he recalls. "But outside, there was almost a code-switch going on. We were firm in our identity, and yet we were also aware of our surroundings and how we had to move within them." That same fluency served him when he arrived in Derry in 1997 and found a city divided along lines he didn't yet understand. Music became his passport across the sectarian divide. "I was bringing in sets of decks (the equipment DJs use to play, control, and manipulate music). That's the conversation, all the other conversations come out of that."Kwame relates that Douglass's Belfast story with his evocation of finding a home in the city hit him with the force of revelation. "A Black man, an enslaved man on the run in 1845 and that's his response to being in Belfast. That has to be the starting point for us to reset."The result is a 77-minute production, one minute for every year of Douglass's life, an immersive experience fusing hip-hop, jazz, gospel, classical, and electronic music with spoken word, choral arrangements, and the honest voices of young people from both Belfast and New York. "You're going to be presented with a level of musicianship that is extraordinary, and it's unlike anything you've ever seen."North Star runs June 3–21 at the Irish Arts Center, tickets at irishartscenter.org.Next up from Irish Stew, Fresh Stew LIVE with Terry Golway on his new thriller Terror From America: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, recorded before sold out audience in the Malachy McCourt Room at Ernie O'Malley's Pub in NYC with the fiddler Eileen McLain and actor Mick Mellamphy enhancing the experience.LINKSNORTH STARIrish Arts Center info and ticketsInstagramKWAME DANIELSInstagramFacebookLinkedInORGANIZATIONSBounce CultureSolabIRISH STEW LINKSWebsite Home PageFacebookInstagramLinkedInMedia Partner: IrishCentralEpisode Details: Season 8, Episode 18; Total Episode Count: 159Send us Fan Mail

The crystal is making a loud, steady sound: Boof-tss. Boof-tss. Boof-tss. The knight immediately decides it must be a weapon, a warning, or a dragon-summoning beacon! He marches straight to Wizzlethorp's tower to find the answer. The wizard tries casting spells and scribbling equations, thinking it's a mathematical code calculating the distance to the moon. Frustrated and confused, Chucklenugget runs to Granny Gigglesnort, who drops it into her turnip soup thinking it's a timer stone—but it just makes the kitchen noisy! Finally, he visits Sparky Flarkbottom, who tries to use it as a battery to power a Clockwork Octopus, only to declare it a "useless paperweight."Defeated, the heroes gather at the tavern, staring gloomily at the relentless, thumping rock. They are completely baffled because it doesn't have an answer. In this kids story podcast episode, the whole village stops worrying about rules and reasons and just starts to dance. They learn that some of the very best things in life—like music, art, and playing—don't need to have a serious reason to exist. They are wonderful just because they bring us joy! It's BKFK Book Month!
