Imagine this scene: You're shopping in Target with one child pulling on your leg and the other grabbing random items off the shelves, wailing, “PLEEEEASE Mommy can I have this?” An elderly woman in the same aisle smiles at you and says, “You're going to miss this, dear! The days are long but the years are short!” Or imagine that you buy a parenting book about a discipline approach that your sister-in-law raves about, but when you try it at home it just makes you feel uneasy. But it's all you're seeing on your Instagram ads and hearing about from your mom friends, so you decide just to push through, even though it's making you miserable. Whether unrealistic expectations are placed on us by well-meaning people, or we place them on ourselves due to our own childhood experiences, it is something that constantly plagues us with self-doubt. Am I doing enough? Am I doing this right? On today's episode, I'm talking with Danielle Bettmann, parenting coach at Parenting Wholeheartedly and the host of the Failing Motherhood Podcast, about how we can declutter these unrealistic expectations and have confidence in our parenting again. Danielle is a positive-Discipline certified parenting coach who empowers parents to crack the code of their strong-willed child's personality, meet their deepest core needs to improve their behavior, and find new levels of patience. An early childhood educator, certified teacher and home visitor, Danielle now equips parents from all over via Zoom! Instead of inadvertently inviting defiance by using traditional tools or playing "whack-a-mole" with short-sighted reactions, families get on the same page and learn how to cultivate cooperation while being KIND + FIRM at the same time! Host of the well-loved podcast, Failing Motherhood, she's passionate about eliminating shame from parents' vocabulary, reminding them they are the parent their kids need. She is also a mom to two daughters, wife of 15 years to her high-school sweetheart, and an avid fan of sunshine and coffee. Resources Mentioned: Connect with Danielle on her website, her podcast, and Instagram. I would highly recommend her FREE Calm + Confident masterclass where you'll learn  how to master the KIND + FIRM approach that your strong-willed child needs without crushing their spirit or walking on eggshells. Parenting is HARD! As a mother of 3, I always feel like I'm trying to balance my kids' needs, family and society expectations, and reality and honestly, constantly feel like I'm failing all over the place. Danielle Bettmann is a parenting coach for strong-willed kids, and the Host of the Failing Motherhood Podcast. Our kids are constantly growing and changing which requires us to adapt to this new version of them. We don't want to operate based on what others are doing or a Pinterest board! Our busy lives are constantly changing too. Her signature coaching program helps parents grow confidence in working with kids at every age and changing circumstances. In this program, she teaches parents the 3 C's - Communication, Core Needs, and Composure. Approaching children with curiosity helps identify what needs are under the surface. Everyone is seeking to belong, feeling in control, and have attention and connection. She reassures us that focusing on what we did accomplish in a day helps us keep our priorities aligned and it only takes 15 minutes a day of being present with our child to sustain a close relationship. She emphasizes the importance of playfulness! She has partnered with Mighty and Bright to create a card deck to help prioritize our own mental health and encourage engagement with our kiddos. *Purchase the Special Time Cards HERE.  Enter code: failingmotherhood for 10% off! *Be sure to subscribe to the Failing Motherhood podcast. Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm definitely impact how we parent, and if you throw a strong-willed kiddo (or two) into the mix, then parenting becomes even more challenging. Today's guest is Danielle Bettmann. Danielle is a Positive-Discipline certified parenting mentor for families with strong-willed kids age 1-7 and host of the Failing Motherhood podcast. She guides parents to cultivate cooperation, extend their patience and prevent behavior proactively through a group coaching program called Wholeheartedly CALM. A teacher by trade and a coach by strengths, her passion is to be a translator between adult + child, helping parents crack the code of their child's personality and find sanity + strategies. Today, Danielle shares her powerful story about why she ended up downsizing with her two daughters, moving to an apartment and getting rid of 75% of their belongings and, even when she moved into a larger home again, not filling it up with stuff when she recognized the benefits of living with less. We then talk about how to approach parenting with self-awareness, compassion, and without mom guilt, especially when we're overwhelmed and dealing with strong-willed kiddos. What did you fail at today? Did you know Sarah Blakely's dad asked her this every single night growing up? She founded Spanx btw. Failure isn't bad. It builds character. Jk, but it does build resilience. And when it comes to Motherhood, no one has failed bigger than my friend and client Crista Crista and I have been working together for 8 years. We think? It's unclear. We have been through job changes, a divorce, very many fertility cycles, six pregnancies and 3 births together. Crista is beyond accomplished and truly one of the strongest, hardest working women I know. Which is why it was so disorienting to rack up a long list of “failures” on the road to motherhood.   Download your free guide to the 20 Things No One Tells You About Pregnancy & Postpartum here. What if rock bottom for your spouse meant your family must risk it all in hopes of getting them the care they need? Could you walk away from your comfortable life for them to get the help they need? Danielle Bettmann, wife, mother, parenting coach, podcast host and this week's brave guest, is sharing her story as the wife of a husband who suffers from alcoholism. She talks about discovering the extent of his disease, what it felt like to try to carry on as normal with those around her during this battle, and the difficult decision to sell the family home to pay for the in-patient treatment her husband needed to get sober. The in-patient treatment did work. Danielle's husband is celebrating 3.5 years sober, while Danielle and her family are in love with their downsized life and their continued focus on people and experiences versus things.   As many as 76 million Americans (around 45 percent of the population) have been exposed to some form of alcoholism or alcoholic behaviors in their family; and as many as 26.8 million of those people are children. Despite its frequency, those who haven't experienced it firsthand may not realize how close alcoholism is to the ones they know and love, while those struggling with the impact of the disease on their family can feel alone in their struggles. Alcoholism is a disease that affects all family members, and the impact goes beyond relationships. If you believe that you or a loved one may be suffering from alcoholism, please get help by contacting Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, or a local treatment center.   About the Guest: Danielle Bettmann is the owner & parenting coach of Wholeheartedly.   She helps families with a strong-willed toddler and a "good cop / bad cop" dynamic find sanity & solutions! Are you the parent to a strong-willed child? Guess what…that's actually a good thing. Hear me out...even though strong-willed kids are spirited and courageous, they strive to learn things for themselves instead of just accepting what others say. While we know deep down that these are great qualities as they grow up and become more self-sufficient young adults, it can be extremely challenging for parents to be continually challenged. It's hard to be patient and parents of strong-willed children often talk about struggling to keep their cool or their sanity. That's why I am thrilled to have our guest on the Wannabe Minimalist Show this week. Danielle Bettmann is a Positive-Discipline certified coach for parents of strong-willed kids age 1-7 and host of the Failing Motherhood podcast. She guides parents to cultivate cooperation, extend their patience and get on the same page. A teacher by trade and mentor by strengths, her passion is to be a translator between adult + child, helping parents crack the code of their child's personality, find more sanity and strategies, and be kind AND firm at the same time.We connected on several levels including some of the crazy toys we've gotten suckered into purchasing. I love her approach to raising children and her journey toward minimalism is incredibly interesting. I don't always get to chat with people about minimalism AND another area of expertise so we geek out for a little bit on it.All good stuff and we get into some really good tactics that will not only help you with your children (if you have them), but with the other relationships in your life too like your partner, boos, friends, PTA parents…you name it!This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:How Danielle overcame hardships with minimalismTips for living a good life with less (and what that means)What to do if your strong-willed child pushes your buttonsTips for buying toys for long-term vs. short-term goalsIdeas for getting your co-parent on the same page*********************Links mentioned in this episode (some may be affiliate links):Get more show notes and ALL THE LINKS at wannabeclutterfree.com/117Danielle's WebsiteCalm BIG Emotions Guide *FREEBIE* – www.parentingwholeheartedly.com/emotionsMakeover your Patience Workbook *FREEBIE* - www.parentingwholeheartedly.com/patienceDanielle's InstagramFailing Motherhood PodcastTidy Home Academy - When you're ready to take your home & life to the next level, Tidy Home Academy will get you there.
