Launching a card is such a core part of today's financial services. Whether you're an incumbent or a fintech, a card is likely – or will likely be – a cornerstone product in your portfolio and an important contributor to your revenue. What baffles me is that with all the new technology platforms, banking as s service, and experienced program managers, there's still a gap for firms and entrepreneurs to really understand what goes into launching and managing a card. We wanted to shine some major light on the card launching process making it easier, smoother, and if things go right, more successful. And to do that, we enlisted some of the best fintech and financial services firms out there to talk about what they've learned launching and scaling card products. We turned to some of the top brands – like Wise and Dave – with millions of cards in their users' hands. We also turned to the platforms and banks – firms like Cross River Bank and First National Bank of Omaha. And we talked to Galileo – the technology and processing platform powering the cards of many of today's most popular fintechs. Thank you to Galileo, who has supported this project from the beginning. We appreciate your support and the work you do throughout the industry. This podcast mini-series is intended to help get your card launch right. One thing you'll hear as we speak to some of the best in the industry is the need to plan well. It doesn't mean you'll get it right the first time around but at least you'll have a way forward. We want you to know what's ahead for you and ultimately to learn from some of the best and brightest around who've launched cards ultimately used by millions of people and companies. Learn from their battle scars and successes. This is the first of a three part series. To dive even deeper, I encourage you to download the guide we published incorporating all this inside information and more. To download your free guide, go to www.tearsheet.co/cardguide This first part of the series address all the planning that goes into ideating, creating, and launching a card. We address the following: *Introduction to the importance of launching and managing cards in financial services. *The need for understanding the card launching process and collaborating with partners. *Planning and the "why" behind launching a card, considering customer problems. *Different approaches to launching cards as strategic differentiators or add-ons. *Case studies from Wise, Bluevine, Dave, and their reasons for launching cards. *Understanding the differences between debit and credit cards and their implications. *Planning for the future of card programs and ecosystems. *The importance of testing, not rushing to market, and iterating. *The role of value proposition in connecting with a company's mission. *Differentiation through features surrounding the card and fulfilling customer needs.

I'm all about working smarter, not harder, and the holy grail of working less and earning more is passive income. I mean, what's more efficient that making money in your sleep? But what do most passive income experts not mention? Setting up a passive income stream can be lot of work. Like.. A LOT of work (especially when you're doing it for the first time). And although I'd still recommend putting in the work to create those passive income streams, I also want to share an easy win. There's one passive income stream every business owner should have, and it doesn't take endless hours to set it up! It's not sexy, in fact, it's incredibly boring! But it's a small way that you can earn more money, without having to put in a whole lot of extra work. The easy win? A bank account with APY terms that help you add extra cash to your bank account every single month. (I told you it wasn't gonna be sexy!!) In this episode, I'm sharing more about why I decided to switch to new banks, what I looked for, and why I ultimately landed with SoFi and BlueVine. Things were going downhill for David Quinn when he met his future wife—or such might be the obvious punchline to punctuate Quinn's disclosure that he met his wife on a ski vacation. Still, Quinn lets us know that the timing of his match being made was in sync with the escalating financial crisis of the late 2000s—a grim environment that quickly fogged over the career trajectories of many banking executives.   Quinn, who was then head of FP&A for Citigroup's UK retail banking operations, found that the timing of the growing crisis was to exact a stiff price. Along with five other “handpicked” Citigroup executives, he had recently completed an executive MBA program specially designed by Citigroup to springboard the bank's next generation of leaders into upper management roles. However, regardless of the degree status of its targets, Citigroup's leadership development effort suddenly lost its spring. “For me, the promised leadership role turned out to be CFO of Norway, which was not a big business for Citigroup at the time and at best would have been a sidestep,” comments Quinn, who opted instead to leave Citigroup and subsequently move to the United States with his new American fiancée. Quinn doesn't appear to have ever second-guessed his paucity of aspiration to be CFO of Norway. In September of 2009, he accepted a position with Bank of the West, where within only a few months he was appointed head of FP&A.   Despite his successful employment transition, Quinn still seems mindful of the economic uncertainty that gripped the late 2000s. In fact, he recalls staring down on San Francisco Bay from Bank of the West's boardroom one day while the bank's CFO, sitting across from him, tried to “sell him” on joining the bank. Says Quinn: “My feeling at the time was that I just needed a job.” –Jack Sweeney

This episode features an interview with David Quinn, CFO at BlueVine. BlueVine provides small and medium-sized business owners with the working capital they need to run and grow their businesses. David has more than 25 years of global experience in banking and finance. Prior to BlueVine, David served as Commercial Bank Chief Financial Officer at Silicon Valley Bank. He also served as Executive Vice President and Consumer Bank Chief Financial Officer at Bank of the West. David has held senior leadership positions at Citibank, Morgan Stanley, and Lehman Brothers in the UK. On this episode, David discusses modernizing your technology to work for you, the benefits of using third party software instead of building in-house, and making your business unattractive to fraudsters.Quotes*”There's only so much the textbooks can teach you about finance. The rest is on the job learning. And it always makes me smile - you think people have got it all. They come out of their MBA. They have all of the education, but you have none of the tangible. Navigating an economy like this is really tricky.”*”From a finance perspective, we've really grown up historically by buying bits of technology and then retrofitting our data for that technology. And often, what I've seen is we don't maximize the full benefits. We buy something off the shelf. Best case, we configure our data. Worst case, we customize everything. And that makes it really, really difficult down the line when you are looking to do anything on top of it if you've heavily customized your system. There's a great opportunity to hit reset on that.”*”We don't build everything. You build where you think you have a competitive advantage. And for us, a lot of the data that we have specifically to our clients, we can use that to enhance and enrich it to go and deliver better services to them. But when it comes to things like treasury management, looking at daily deposits, inflows, outflows, how you bring that together in an asset liability management system. Looking at interest forecasting, for example,  those are very specialist areas. That's not where we are focused. I would absolutely engage with third party software to manage that.”*”You just have to make yourself the least attractive for fraud from an external perspective. Internal is slightly different. And to do that, you need strong systems right across the board, strong data health checks, a strong understanding of where you have any gaps. And you need to be able to close them quickly. You need good QA testing, you need great product requirements. And I think importantly, you need to collaborate with other industry peers and share best practices. Fraud rings tend to bounce around the institutions. And so what you can learn from other institutions and put in place as protective measures quickly is important.”*”We have a significantly healthy balance sheet. In this episode of SaaS Connect by Cloud Software Association, Herman Man, VP of products and partnerships (Americas) at Xero at the time of this presentation and now chief product officer at BlueVine, talks about cloud and services and how SaaS can enable the success and transformation of SMBs. Xero, cloud accounting software, is very focused on small businesses and looks particularly at how to be the bridge that helps make small businesses successful. It's helped more than 1.2 million small businesses and boasts more than 600+ integrations. At Xero, when they talk with small business owners, they are always presented with two primary questions: Will my business survive? How do I actually grow my business? These are valid questions because statistics show that after five years, only 50% of businesses survive. Herman addresses how SaaS can help SMBs not only survive, but thrive. The discussion includes: Why small businesses matter (95% of companies in the US are small businesses). The SaaS SMB experience to date has not been ideal. Small businesses have had to contend with aging software, poor user experiences, and disjointed app experiences. Fintech entered as a way to innovate financing and banks but has not solved the problem because it's difficult for small businesses to acquire new customers, generate trust, and handle regulations such as GDPR. Keys for SaaS to address SMB concerns: Simplify financial management. Connect apps to make it easier for small businesses. Simplify workflows by connecting apps. Automate accounting. Integrate accounting with banking. Enable better access to capital. Create interoperability through standards. Teaser Tip: “To enable small businesses, we in SaaS need to build the interconnectedness between the apps that they use.” - Herman Man Resources Mentioned: Slack Microsoft Featurly Veem This presentation is from a SaaS conference in 2018. This episode is brought to you by SEON. Gil Rosenthal has had a front row seat to financial fraud online for the past 10 years of his career. His fraud career began at PayPal with an elite team of fraud-fighters in Tel Aviv, charged with preventing the high volume of fraud they experienced around 2010. He then moved to BlueVine, an online lender for businesses, where he worked his way up to VP of Risk Management.  While at BlueVine, Gil was in charge of the risk management, as well as the operations processes for the roll-out of PPP (Paycheck Protection Program in the US), to help provide Billions of dollars of funds to small & medium businesses that needed the funds to continue paying their employees. It's been well documented that the entire PPP program resulted in >$76 Billion in fraud. It can be assumed that Gil & his team saw a lot of this, and stopped as much as they could. For the first time publicly, Gil shares what he can about this experience, the unique challenges he & his team faced in stopping fraudulent applications but also experienced the rewards of funding millions of businesses with needed funds to keep their businesses afloat.  Now working as an adviser to high-growth Fintech companies, Gil has learned even more as he works with multiple clients to identify a myriad of fraud attempts in many forms. He shares with the Fraudology audience some of the keys to his success, and his methodology in working with some of the biggest targets of online fraud in the present day. But even more important, the perspective that fraud prevention is more about enabling a better customer experience when done right.  Next week, Gil will join us for Part 2 of our conversation where we will "geek out" about the new approach fraudsters are taking to negatively impact the entire payments eco-system in different ways, and that often gets overlooked or coded as credit issues, instead of fraud. Merchants, fintech companies, banks, and card brands will want to listen to Part 2 as this "trend" is sure to exponentially grow in 2022.  Connect with https://www.linkedin.com/in/gil-rosenthal/ (Gil) on LinkedIn. CORRECTION: At the 10:18 minute mark, I misspoke and said you should take $56,000 and multiply it by 12. That should say DIVIDE by 12. My math is correct in the episode; I just misspoke. Sorry about that! In today’s episode I outline my experience with the U.S. Paycheck Protection Program—known as the PPP loan program—and encourage you to consider applying for a loan if you have been hurt financially by the pandemic. DISCLAIMER: I am not a lawyer, accountant/CPA, financial services adviser or any other financial expert related to the PPP program. I am solely providing you my experience with the program and offering some things for you to consider. You should doublecheck all information with an expert and do your own research. Sole proprietors are allowed to apply for a PPP loan at about a maximum of $20,000, depending on how much you earned in 2019. The process to have your entire loan forgiven is fairly straightforward if you are a sole proprietor. This effectively turns the PPP loan into a grant that you do not have to pay back. Even if you do have to pay back part or all of the loan, the interest rate is only 1%. You may have heard in the beginning of the PPP program that it was hard to get a loan. I cannot speak to whether that is still the case for each individual sole proprietor, but there is a lot of money left in the program and the federal government is concerned that people are not applying. As of July 6, $130 billion was still available for businesses and sole proprietors. First, let’s talk about applying for the loan. Initially, it appeared to be difficult for people to get these loans. In fact, sole proprietors often faced a burden from their own banks because in the beginning major banks issued their own requirement that you had to have a business checking account with them. And many freelancers do not have that. You should check first with your own bank to see if that is still the case and if you can apply through that bank. If not, there are other options, such as Kabbage, PayPal, BlueVine and others. You are only allowed to have one PPP loan. This is important. I encourage you to NOT apply for more than one loan at a time, thinking you can just refuse one of the loans if you are offered more than one. I tried this and the Small Business Administration (SBA) had a glitch that did not flag my Social Security number showing that I had already received a loan approval. So, I was approved for two loans, and it took over a month to work out with one of the lenders how to send back the money back and get it all straightened out with the SBA. To avoid all that, my biggest advice is DO NOT apply for more than one loan at a time. One of the biggest considerations of whether you should apply for the loan is how much money you made in 2019. The loan amount is supposed to cover paychecks. For you as a sole proprietor, you don’t have employees. So, that means your own income. If you did not make much money in 2019, it might not be worth applying for the loan. The loan application MUST be based on the Schedule C form for your 2019 taxes. On your 2019 Schedule C, look at your net profit on line 31. If that number is under $100,000 use whatever that number is. If it’s over $100,000, you have to use $100,000. The PPP has a $100,000 cap. Take that number, whatever yours is, and divide it by 12 to get a monthly total. Then, you multiply that number by 2.5. That is the amount of the loan you are requesting. The paperwork to apply was fairly easy. I did the entire process in a few hours. I had to scan copies of all the 1099s I received for 2019 work and put them into one pdf to submit with the application. I also had to send in a photocopy of my driver’s license and copies of bank statements, which I easily downloaded online. Let’s talk about loan forgiveness. The government has changed a few rules since March, actually making the process easier and better for sole proprietors. The loan forgiveness timeline was eight weeks. Now, you can choose to wait for 24 weeks, which means there is a greater chance you’ll have the entire loan forgiven. To have your loan forgiven, you do have to officially ask your lender. The SBA has created an easier form to do this, called the 3508EZ form. My CPA recommended that to easily show my PPP lender how I was spending the money, I write myself four checks over the next eight weeks, so one check every two weeks, just like a paycheck. I divided my loan by four and I now write myself a check for $5,208 from my checking account that received the loan into my personal account. He recommended I do this process of writing physical checks, rather than just transferring the money electronically, so that we could easily show photocopies of the check to my lender when asking for forgiveness. Your CPA might have a different solution, so be sure to ask an expert. Also know that you cannot get the PPP loan if you are getting unemployment. You can’t have both. There’s also another loan program called the EIDL, or economic injury disaster loan, through the SBA. That is a true loan program that you have to pay back. You can have both the EIDL and a PPP loan, but you have to be able to show that the money went for separate areas of your business. I don’t know much about the EIDL, so be sure to do your research and talk to an expert to learn more about that program.     Biz Bite: Create a Power Hour After List The Bookshelf: “Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood” by Trevor Noah   Resources: Trump signs extension of PPP small business coronavirus relief fund Tax Deductions For Paycheck Protection Expenses Remain In Doubt Loan forgiveness form: 3508EZ

Welcome to the Tearsheet Podcast. I’m Zack Miller. One of the most exciting stories of this generation of fintech firms is Galileo. Recently acquired by SoFi for $1.2 billion, Galileo now provides the payments and banking backbone via APIs to many of the top names in the game — Chime, TransferWise, Robinhood and Bluevine. Firms like these use Galileo to open accounts and issue cards. Clay Wilkes founded Galileo 20 years ago and continues to lead the company today. He joins us on the podcast today to talk about why his firm is seeing so much interest from companies across industries that want to launch financial products. Clay describes the genesis story behind Galileo and what the early opportunities were for the problems he was attempting to solve. He describes the evolution of the platform, as financial services have matured. Clay dives into the use cases for his customers and lastly, he talks about the product and corporate strategy pipeline he’s got lined up for the near future.

Today's interview is with Eyal Lifshitz. Eyal is a third generation entrepreneur who has seen first hand the challenges small businesses face in building a company from the group up. His father ran his own small physical therapy clinic in New York, while his grandfather was an electrical supplies store owner in Israel. Eyal was a Principal at Greylock IL, Greylock Partners’ dedicated fund for Israel and Europe, where he was involved in investing over $100 million in capital in start-up companies. Eyal’s father owned a small business in New York and saw first-hand the financial toll of having to wait on long payment cycles, often not taking a salary for months before payments arrived. This inspired Eyal to start BlueVine to provide a solution that enabled small business owners to grow and prosper through his company, BlueVine. As BlueVine’s founder and CEO, Eyal gives small businesses access to working capital by providing advances on outstanding invoices. BlueVine provides flexible working capital financing to small and medium-sized businesses, giving them quick access to the funds needed to purchase inventory, cover expenses or expand operations.
