Clare walks with Reverend Maggie McLean today on a stretch of the Camino de Santiago, the world famous pilgrimage route that concludes at Santiago de Compostela's glorious Cathedral in northern Spain. The Camino can be completed in numerous ways, with one of the most popular routes being the French Way otherwise known as the Francés. It begins in the French town of St. Jean Pied de Port and ends 790km/490miles later in Santiago. Maggie is trekking part of this route and Clare joins her at Triacastela to hear her story as they make their way to the Benedictine Monastery at Samos, which is about 150km from Santiago itself. Maggie is a lifelong keen walker, and was one of the first women to be ordained in the Church of England. She works as a Canon at York Minster, and would like to see some kind of pilgrimage established there, so her time on the Camino is not just a spiritual journey, it's also a way of conducting some research. On their walk she tells Clare about her life and journey in faith, including working in homeless centres, probation hostels and a seafarers' mission in Australia. En route Clare and Maggie bumped into Arthur, a pilgrim who has spent several weeks every year for seven years on the Camino, which he started by walking out of his front door in Switzerland. Despite suffering cancer three times, and having one quarter of a lung removed, he still carries a 10kg backpack and never plans where he's going to stay overnight.Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor

In the past 30 years or so, as more English speaking people settle in France, Late-20th-century Halloween traditions have invaded France and are changing the way the autumn season is typically enjoyed. The French traditionally celebrate All Saint's Day on November 1st after generally a two week school break- this holiday is known as “Toussaint," and is a somber observance during which many French families remember their loved ones who have passed on. Some families visit graves. It is a day to remember all saints, both known and unknown. In this insightful episode of "The French Way" podcast, host Karen Gombault interviews Kim Severson, a weight loss coach who helps clients achieve their goals without the misery of restrictive dieting. Kim, who worked in food, wine & hospitality for years, shares her personal journey from struggling with traditional diets to discovering a more sustainable and enjoyable approach to weight loss, which ultimately led her to become a coach. Her philosophy emphasizes reconnecting with the body's natural hunger signals and enjoying the foods you love in moderation, rather than adhering to strict, unsustainable diets. Together, Karen and Kim discuss the importance of balance, pleasure, and mindset shifts in achieving lasting weight loss and a healthier relationship with food. Key Takeaways: Ditch Restrictive Dieting: Kim advocates for abandoning traditional, restrictive diets that often lead to feelings of deprivation and failure, emphasizing that sustainable weight loss is possible without sacrificing the foods you love. Reconnect with Your Body: One of Kim's main tools is helping clients listen to their body's hunger signals, allowing them to eat when hungry and stop when satisfied, which reduces overeating. Enjoy Food Without Guilt: The concept of balance is central to Kim's approach, where enjoying a variety of foods, including indulgent ones, is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle without feeling deprived. Mindset Shifts Are Crucial: Overcoming the all-or-nothing mindset that many dieters struggle with is essential. Kim encourages clients to see food choices as just that—choices—rather than labeling them as "good" or "bad." Sustainable Weight Loss is Achievable: Both Karen and Kim stress that long-term weight loss doesn't have to suck! By finding pleasure in food and avoiding extreme restrictions, it's possible to lose weight in a way that feels natural and sustainable. Empowerment Through Choice: A significant part of Kim's coaching is helping clients feel empowered by their food choices, which leads to more mindful eating and less stress around dieting. Kim Severson leaves us with a powerful reflection: *"Is there anything I'm willing to do for weight loss today?"* This question encompasses her approach to weight loss, focusing on daily, sustainable actions that bring you closer to your goals without the stress and struggle of traditional diets. Kim's method offers a refreshing alternative to restrictive dieting, making long-term weight loss both achievable and enjoyable. In this episode, I discuss the concept of "life focus," drawing inspiration from French culture. It's crucial to shift focus away from obsessive thoughts about weight and food, as constant preoccupation with weight and diet can hinder weight loss or health goals. I explore three ways to become more life-focused: Learning: French people prioritize continuous learning, whether through reading diverse materials, watching documentaries, or visiting museums and exhibits. Experiencing: This involves embracing travel, taking guided tours, attending cooking classes, and enjoying tastings or live shows. Connecting: Additionally, fostering connections with others through meaningful conversations and shared experiences contributes to a fulfilling life. To shift towards a life-focused mindset, the episode outlines practical steps such as identifying topics for further learning, planning new experiences, and reconnecting with friends and family. Embracing the French approach to life focus not only enhances overall well-being but also helps with sustainable weight loss as a natural byproduct of a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.Want more insight into the French Way of Life regarding health & wellness? Recently I spent the weekend away on the French coast with new friends. The weekend could have been about social anxiety and people pleasing, which would have led to overeating and / or overdrinking. The weekend was not about that at all. Instead, the weekend was about connection, great discussion, fun, time in nature, games and food, of course! (we are in France!). This episode illustrates my before and after story when it comes to food freedom. Want more insight into the French Way of Life regarding health & wellness? Uncle Brad discovered a drink while skiing in the French Alps, Vert Chaud (or Hot Green) and Cocolat au Rhum (Chocolate with Rum). It turns out, Chocolate and Chartreuse were meant to be together, and they never knew it. And so is chocolate and rum BTW. We understand that Chartreuse is in short supply, but if you stick around for the tips we'll give you alternatives that can get you close. The history on this one is anyone's guess, but Uncle Brad has a theory that he'll unfold in the history section. This is going to be your new favorite warm up beverage after a cold day outside. Trust and believe! Vert Chaud In a 10oz mug add 2oz Green Chartreuse* 6oz of creamy hot chocolate (recipe below) (stir) Layer 2oz of wet whipped cream by pouring the whipped cream over spoon into your drink Garnish with dusting of cocoa powders *IF YOU DON'T HAVE Chartreuse, you can use rum. In this case I used a split base of 1oz. Demerara 151 (any dark overproof will do) and an aged Martinique Rhum Agricole. But you can play with any aged rums. I chose the aforementioned because I wanted something French, and something strong to recreate the spirit forward taste of Chartreuse. Hot Chocolate Recipe 3.5 cups whole milk 0.5 cups heavy cream Go to the baking aisle to find the next 4oz bittersweet chocolate (you can use a bar or chips, which are less work) 4oz semisweet chocolate (you can use a bar or chips, which are less work) 2 Tbsp dutch processed cocoa powder (yes, that's really a thing) 2 Tsp cornstarch 1 Tsp vanilla extract 1 Tbsp Sugar (optional, it's great without it) In sauce pan add Milk, cream, cornstarch, vanilla, cocoa powder and mix over medium low heat Whist constantly so no lumps and skin doesn't form on top of the milk When bubbles form on sides and the mixture is starting to steam, remove from heat Add bittersweet and semisweet chips to the pan and stir until fully melted Add sugar if you feel you'd like it sweeter and mix until dissolved Pour into heat safe container so you can easily pour into your mug. Store extra in fridge and reheat gently. Prospector In mixing glass add: 1.5 oz Cognac 0.5 oz white creme de cacao 0.5 oz Green Chartreuse 0.5 oz Cointreau Stir until chilled (about 20 - 30 seconds) Strain over ice in rocks glass. Garnish with twist of lemon (extra points for expressing the oils over the drink) TIP: Alternatives to Chartreuse The Art of Drinking IG: @theartofdrinkingpodcast Jules IG: @join_jules TikTok: @join_jules Website: joinjules.com Brad IG: @favorite_uncle_brad This is a Redd Rock Music Podcast IG: @reddrockmusic www.reddrockmusic.com Learn more about your ad choices. The French crime film is different from those of other countries for several reasons. While some, certainly Jean Dellanoy's Soleil Des Voyeux (aka Action Man) draw elements from the German Krimi and the George Nader Jerry Cotton films and even the serial (particularly those of Feuillade, whose Fantomas and Les Vampires remain surprisingly gripping and modern in feel and approach), the overarching vibe is less that of contemporaneous American crime films or Italian poliziotteschi than it is, as you might expect from the nation that coined the term, the American film noir and gangster pictures of the late 30s and 1940s. And as with the idiosyncratic and often groundbreaking critics turned directors of the Nouvelle Vague, the French crime film less pays strict homage to than integrates the driving elements and visual aesthetic of American noir in a more contemporary sense, improving and updating them to something more suited and appealing to a modern audience: think much venerated names like Jean Pierre Melville, Rene Clement, Georges Lautner, Jean Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon. So join us as we discuss one of the most notable and influential genres of its type, the French Crime film, only here on Weird Scenes! St Jean Pied de Port, France is the traditional starting point for people walking the Camino Frances, or the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. This is a medieval village with a ton of history and a rich food and hiking culture. Come travel with us as we talk all things Camino Frances, and Basque food. Come with us on our first European Episode.
Have you heard of the Camino de Santiago? It's a popular pilgrimage through the north of Spain and my dad just finished his trek. He took the “French Way,” which is roughly the same length as the journey across the state of Wisconsin. Now that you have that perspective, does that make it more or less cool? For me, it's tough to say, but I can confirm that I would not want to spend 45 days walking across the great badger state. Anyway, my dad's been home for a little over a month now and we're taking to the pod to recap his journey and chit-chat about what's on the horizon, join in!P.S. In this extended episode of Curiously Catholic, Dom talks with Helen Armstrong about her transformative experience on the Camino de Santiago, complete with a Q+A from you, the listeners! ---“When we allow him to break open our hearts, that's when true healing begins.”---Helen shares how the Camino provided her with the space to let go and strive to be more of who God is calling her to be. She shares her experiences with how many of us relate to "demanding" or instructing God on how we want our lives to look. From solitude to socialisation; From joys to suffering; Helen describes many of the lessons learned from this life-changing pilgrimage. The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St. James, is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James. One of the most popular routes - The Camino Frances or French Way - spans just over 800km and takes approx 4-5 weeks to complete. ---"Sometimes the only way the good Lord can get into some hearts is to break them.” - Fulton J. Sheen--------------------'Curiously Catholic' is an Evangelion production and is one of the many things the apostolate is doing to share the truth of the Gospel with the love of Christ. Lexman takes a deep dive into the interesting linguistic phenomenon of Italianization, where words and grammatical structures from one language are absorbed and adopted into another. In this episode, he chats with Chris Duffin, a linguist at McGill University, about the arborescence of Latin nouns into French branches, and how this process can create new combinations and meanings.

So many of us have a hard time saying "no" because we like to please and even fear disappointing others. Having bold boundaries is essential to our very own joy! However, the French are great at saying "non" and there are many ways regarding how to gracefully say no, with ease. I share how to do this because I was very inspired by how easily the French were able to say "non" with grace. Please SUBSCRIBE so you are notified every time a new episode is released each Thursday! The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
"He who comes home with the most money doesn't win. He who comes home with the most experiences wins." - Steve Smith, contributor with Rick Steves in Rick Steves France 2015 The Simple Sophisticate, episode #23 One of the most exquisite pleasures in my experience has always been having time at home without a to-do list. To enjoy my sanctuary that comforts me, rejuvenates me and allows me to dream so that when I do step outside into the world I can do, seek and produce, is one of the things I most treasure about living simply luxuriously. And so it began when I was a child, no doubt, as my mother always cultivated a warm home, but as I grew up and became responsible for establishing my own abode, it took much exploration, dead-ins from time to time and investment to create a space that allowed the everyday to be just as stimulating as new experiences brought about by travel. And in so doing, paying attention to my home environment, I began to pay attention to how I spend my days. Was I exhausted and unfilled at the end or exhausted and feeling productive? Did I have time in my day to spend it with those I loved, converse with those who engaged in creative, uplifting and thought-provoking conversation or care for myself in such a way that respected my overall health? And depending upon my answer, I would tweak, eliminate, maximize or designate more or less time to those activities that improved the quality of living. "He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much." -Bessie A. Stanley As the quote reminds us, living well is truly about prioritizing how we spend our days. Did we make time to enjoy the day, spend it with those we hold dear, take time to respect what our minds and bodies need or did we cram everything into our waking hours in order to fit a mold that we weren't asked for input regarding its creation? Everyone's path to living well will be different, but the key is to know what you want - more loosely rather than specifically. Because as we know, our lives intermingle with the rest of the world, but if we bring our best selves, have good intentions and are willing to be true selves, success is possible when it comes to living well. Recently, I was watching the travel guru Rick Steves discuss on PBS his explorations through the countryside of France. While staying at Chateau de Pray and dining on their outdoor terrace, his dining companion shared the quote listed at the beginning of today's post. And I couldn't agree more especially when it comes to travel, but why not bring a similar way of living into our everyday? Why not . . . live well each and every day? Why not use the nice china in the middle of the week? Why not treat ourselves regularly to dinner or lunch with a dear friend at a restaurant that piques our interest or tantalizes our taste buds? Why not sleep on silk pillowcases each night? Many may quickly scoff at such ideas as being too indulgent, thus deflating the exhilaration that is felt when they are only experiences from time to time, but what I hope to bring to your attention today is that with patience and careful planning, everyday life can indeed be lived luxuriously and can actually enhance the quality of our lives. Below are 20 ways to foster a simply luxurious way of living, but these are just a taste. If you would like the full list inspired by the French way of living, check out chapter 10 "Indulging Your Inner Francophile" in Choosing The Simply Luxurious Life: A Modern Woman's Guide. 1. Cook at home. Find simple, yet delicious recipes and discover the pleasures of cooking on your own schedule for your own dietary needs and preferences. (View TSLL recipes here.) 2. Indulge in café time. Once, twice or three times a week depending up on your schedule and enjoyment, select a favorite local café and stop in for some reading time, moseying through magazine time, or chats with friends. Indulge in one of the patisseries delicious sweet treats and lose track of time. ~Les Deux Garcons cafe in Aix-en-Provence, cours Mirabeau~ 3. Wear luxurious lingerie everyday. As I talk about in my book, lingerie is a necessity for the woman who wears it, not for those who might see her in it. Why? Because simply knowing we are wearing beautiful, comfortable, luxurious lingerie feels good. And everything begins with our thoughts. If we feel good, we smile more readily, we are more open to new experiences and our attitude is lifted. 4. Let go of busy. A powerful decision that will change your day-to-day living drastically for the better. Busy doesn't mean better or more productive, it simply reveals a life that perhaps could be managed better. After all, living well means living a life of quality. A life that focuses on what is necessary and lets go of the rest. And when you let go of busy, you have more time for moments of simple leisure and luxury that cultivate an everyday life to savor. (Click here to dive into this topic.) 5. Cultivate a capsule wardrobe for each season. Knowing you have in your closet clothes that will make you look and feel your best is a very powerful tool to possess as you begin your day. While this takes time and never really ends due to lives and bodies changing, it is worth our attention. (Click here to learn more about building a capsule wardrobe.) 6. Follow your own schedule. Perhaps it's Friday or even Saturday night, everyone must be out doing something, staying up late, right? Wrong. Your daily schedule is one that works for you and those you spend your time with. Perhaps you prefer Wednesday evenings out because Thursdays are lighter days at work and you enjoy spending your weekends waking up early and getting things done. Whatever schedule works for your goals, intentions, health, family, etc - adhere to it and don't apologize. After all, our lives, needs and desires change, listen to what is nudging you, calling your name and that is where you will find the unexpected beauty. 7. Discover a personal scent. Similar to knowing you are wearing luxurious lingerie is the choice of scent you layer upon your skin before stepping out the door for work or for play. A luxurious decision and investment, but one that will reveal your attention to detail. 8. Subscribe to daily/weekly/monthly periodicals. Running throughout the philosophy of living simply luxuriously is being well-read. Depending upon your lifestyle, curiosities, locale and interests, you will select reading material that interests you. Most importantly, gather knowledge, choose to learn something new each day, read a review of a new play or restaurant and be encouraged to give it a try. Become in the know of current events in order to strike up a conversation with anyone. Reading in truth, is a way of tickling your brain and refusing to live each day the same even if the events may be routine. 9. Save time and don't wash your hair everyday. Purchase a dry shampoo and have on hand for the days you don't lather up. Shampoo less often, thereby saving yourself more time in the morning, and believe it or not, improve the condition of your tresses. (Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk) 10. Invest in quality skincare products. In episode #13 of the podcast, specifics are shared on how to create glowing skin, and by investing in quality skincare products, your most beautiful skin will shine. The power of prevention is real, and while it takes time and a bit of investment, the pay-offs are tremendous. 11. Design a workout regimen to look forward to. Whether you enjoy exercising outdoors in Mother Nature or attending classes lead by instructors that inspire you and classmates that boost your mood, explore your interests and community to see what is available and what captures your needs and proclivities. Most people after having exercise will tell you that they feel better, energized and less stress, and if you can bring that into your everyday life, everything will be affected in a very positive way. (Revolver Yoga Studio, Walla Walla) 12. Find time to treasure hunt. Even if you are not necessarily going to buy, poke around in local consignment shops, yard sales, second-hand shops, antique boutiques and even boutiques that catch your eye. If nothing else, you will walk away with ideas on how to design, style and mix and match what you already have. 13. Be sincere, yet kind. While everyone has days that you are simply grumpy for any list of reasons, taking it out on others is something you will most likely regret. And even if you have to deliver news that isn't favorable, there is always a way to do so with kindness. Being conscious of how we treat people and our delivery will almost always be appreciated, and even if it is taken for granted, at least we can go home at night and feel good about the energy we put out into the world. 14. Shop at local vendors and boutiques. Perhaps you live in a town that you hand-selected for the community it offers, but what if you didn't? Either way, supporting local vendors when it comes to food or local boutiques when it comes to shopping for gifts, necessities and products not only builds good-will, but strengthens the economy of the local community. And additionally, when it comes to buying food locally, you benefit your overall health as most foods are free from pesticides and hold more nutritional value that your body craves. 15. Eat real food. Full of flavor that will satiate, real food is a choice your body will thank you for. Processed food may be more convenient and help you reduce the shopping trips to the grocery store, but in the long term, it is a bad investment. Returning home after a long day knowing the food you will be incorporating into your meal will be satisfying and nutritious will remove guilt and properly fuel your body for whatever it may be asked to do next. 16. Elevate the conversation. Easier said than done when we are exhausted, stressed and frustrated, but when you do your best to refrain from complaining and gossiping, you are less likely to go home in the evening regretting or feeling guilty about partaking. In fact, when conversations are full of curious information - books, local events, news, etc - you can walk away inspired, motivated and eager to do something new. Why not bring such a conversation to those in your world? 17. Create an evening routine to look forward to. At the end of the day, your body and mind may be entirely taxed which is why making time (even 15 minutes) for unwinding with a favorite pastime is crucial. Being able to look forward to this simple routine can be the silver lining no matter what your day has unearthed. 18. Schedule regular spa appointments for beauty and health maintenance. Much like exercise, caring for our bodies is a means to caring for our health, overall beauty and mind. So be sure to schedule your facial, massage, hair cut/color, waxing and any other must-dos before you walk out the door from your last appointment. They can often be the respite in a busy week and will no doubt leave you feeling rejuvenated. 19. Stock a bar cart for spur-of-the-moment entertaining. Whether you drink alcoholic beverages or not, stock a bar cart that has drinks and nibbles at the ready for last-minute guests. Even for one or two guests, having a bar with wine, beer or if it's morning - croissants and hot tea keeps the food with the conversation in the living room or sitting room. Luxurious and ready for any everyday occasion. (A glimpse of my 20. Fill your home with inspired music. For techies or retro audiophiles, have your turntable or playlists ready for any occasion. From leisurely jazz tunes when you return from work and wish to read the daily news to beautiful Bach in the morning as you get ready for work, set up your music station, turn off the television and forget about time, even if for a moment. Whatever inspires you in your travels or remains memorable to you from your past, why not bring it into your everyday life if at all possible? Cultivate an everyday life that perhaps no one would believe is possible, but rest assured it is. After all, as Annie Dillard reminds us, how we spend our days is how we spend our lives. In this third episode of 40 Days and 40 Nights on the Camino de Santiago, I get closer to arriving in the Pyrennes where I begin my ascent into Spain on a 500-mile trek along the French Way. I talk about my time spent in Bishops Stortford, my encounter with a vicar and a bad habit that really has not served me in life. This is a tough week for everyone, so we did what we could do to make ourselves feel a little bit more ourselves despite existential despair—we recorded a podcast. We’re all over the place (we promise this won’t be a theme for the whole season!), but we recommend a TON of books, which is basically all we can do.Next week, we’ve got an interstitial for you! And the week after, we’re deep diving on Alisha Rai’s Serving Pleasure, which is a fantastic erotic romance. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington, this is Stories From Women Who Walk a uniquely forward-looking, story-based podcast for anyone charmed by and curious about the power of story to profoundly and positively shift our awareness, our behavior, even our culture as well as those who wish to learn more about the power of walking to reveal the world around us and within us. Like magic, the sorcery of stories is this: they help each of us to be seen and heard, to understand and be understood. When I was getting underway with my new podcast Stories From Women Who Walk, a fellow podcaster and colleague Isil Uysal Calvelli, co-founder of BeCoach Academy who knew of my pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago de Compostella suggested I talk with her friend, colleague and co-founder of BeCoach Academy Elena Marsh in Augsburg Bavaria Germany who also walked the Camino. And here we are together. My conversation with Elena is in 2 parts so be sure to stop back next week to hear the conclusion - which is always the best part. When asked the question, “What would you do if you were fearlessly courageous?” Elena Marsh said, “I would walk Camino”. From that moment it began to get serious. Elena Marsh walked the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (also known as The French Way or Camino Frances) beginning in August 2019. And I’m delighted to invite you to join us as we walk together and retrace her footsteps across Spain. 00 to 0700 Reflections and insightsWhat is the Camino and what was the drawHer dream - how to manage self-employment with this dream - magicalA knowing to go - no questionCoaching conversation: what would you do?6 months to prepareWhat is it so important to go: inner voice: living life to fullest - out of ordinary setting - move beyond comfort zone - self-learning - connection to people - it’s deeper out there - constant singular question: what brought you here?0700 to 0930 Background on CaminoSt Jean Pied de Port to Santiagowalked with husband35 days to walk 800 km/500 milesaccident interrupted walk to Finisterre - went by busCamino magic0930 to 1400 Expectations and surpriseswhat did you expect and what did it turn out to beexpected adventure, difficulty, meet fabulous people, deep insightssurprises: physical responses (25 km/day usually); walking with spouse/partner, what strategies did she employ? patience, compromise, growth, discussion, values, respect, and communication1400 to 1730 Connecting together in naturehesitancy about pilgrimage with partner - different on Camino because of being togetherfacing unexpecteddeepened connection being togethercompassion versus egoappreciationchallenges together enhanced connection17:30 to 2130 "I felt I had died...."3rd or 4th week of walkinglong stretch - no shade - little water - heatcollapsed in showerwhat would keep her alive2130 to 2400 The power of the Camino to break yougetting into walking harmonycoming close to quittingexperience of dying and vulnerability2400 to 2809 Preparing and adversityinsight: you have to gotrust: keep your heart openremember the lessonQ: Camino is a moment in time; how did the experience shift your life?To hear Elena's answer and more of her pilgrimage you are invited to return with Part 2 of Elena’s Camino journey across Spain next Thursday.Elena's Bio:“Walking Camino de Santiago was my dream for many years since my husband showed me the film “The Way” with Martin Sheen and Emilio Estavez. With all my insights I felt that I MUST go. I just knew it's my thing to do and that something special will happen to me there. Year after year I was postponing the adventure. Today’s guest is Rebekah Peppler. Rebekah is a writer, a food stylist and author of the new book Apéritif: Cocktail Hour the French Way. Today we discuss what inspired her to write the book and how she balances traveling from New York to Los Angeles while living in Paris. Please enjoy our conversation. The post Rebekah Peppler – Ep 15 appeared first on One Creativity & Design.
Rebekah Peppler is a James Beard Award-nominated cookbook author (of "Apéritif: Cocktail Hour the French Way), food stylist, recipe tester and all around badass. She splits her time between Paris, LA and NYC and is currently working on a second cookbook, "À Table." She also wrote an article for the New York Times about the Aperol Spritz that blew up the internet, called "The Aperol Spritz Is Not a Good Drink."We talk in her Paris apartment about the fantastical and clichéd things that really do happen in Paris, we chat about how food (and drinks) are personal, how the adage "fake it 'til you make it" is sometimes the best way to go, and how we both handle anxiety when it comes to tackling a big project -- like writing a book!, which is something we're both in the midst of right now.Rebekah is awesome; I loved having a microphone on this conversation, which was, honestly, like one we'd have over a glass of wine or during apéritif. You can follow Rebekah on Instagram at @rebekahpeppler! Stress & anxiety. We all feel them. Yet the biggest mistake we make is suppressing the emotions and pretending we don't feel them at all. Pretending that everything is going great and perfect. And even if we are feeling authentic enough to share the difficulties we face, we tend to leave out how much stress and anxiety we are really feeling. Like a hidden sludge or cloud we drag around with us throughout our days. But the more we run from it, the larger it becomes. It's time to stop running. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/more-than-enough/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/more-than-enough/support

We are featuring Clemence von Mueffling who comes from a family of beauty experts. Both Clemence's mother and grandmother were beauty editors at French Vogue. Her grandmother also started her career as a model and was on the cover of French Vogue, and guess who was the photographer? Irving Penn! Clemence is the founder & editor of Beauty & Well Being. Clemence worked at Clarins, Puig, and Dior before starting Beauty & Well Bring. Clemence grew up in Paris (she is French) and now lives in NYC. She has recently written a book called, Ageless Beauty: the French Way that gives us the secrets of 3 generations of beauty editors from French Vogue. What was it like growing up in Paris? Incredible! Especially having my mother and grandmother as examples because they are the perfect example of French women not looking for perfection, but trying to become the best version of themselves. Beauty requires a ritual. Self care is about self confidence. If you feel good, you look good. Maintenance and prevention are important. It is never too late to start a good routine, Describe what the Vogue Paris offices are like. All the editors were running around. There was perfume, cosmetics, makeup, they let Clemence try out the different things. Women were elegant. There is a Vogue style, called "The Woman of Vogue." The Woman of Vogue was incredibly chic, elegant and always with a signature perfume. She would know when each person would be there by their scent. Her grandmother wore Guerlain, and now wears Chanel. Her mom wears Sisley, and loves to try new ones as well. What is Beauty & Well-Being? After working for beauty companies, she wanted to have more her voice. She launched her online magazine. She gathered a team of freelance writers in the beauty & wellness field. Every month, they provide in-depth stories, interviews, high profile people and more. It is a platform for women of all ages from teenager to grandmother at accessible price points. It started in 2014. When did you start Beauty and Well Being and how did the idea come about? After she had her twins, she felt was a great time to start a new company, almost like a third child. She wanted to talk about beauty & wellness because it goes together. She wanted to bring to women solutions, because people talk about the problems, but they don't give you the solutions. Wellness - how to choose the best skincare products - respect your skin and hair. They don't address fads. Only tried and true beauty tips. How did you build your team at Beauty and Well-Being? From years working at Clarins, Puig and Dior, she had worked with a ton of journalists and beauty experts. Have to be confident that everything will work out, and need to test it to make sure it will work. How do you come up with story ideas? Every month there is a theme. She can build the series of interviews, articles, stories. She reads the news, magazines; internationally We grew up in similar ways with our elders telling us to make sure to have on mascara, lipstick, etc when we were around them! How did this shape the way you think about beauty? Her grandmother would say for Sunday night dinner, Rendez-Vous with mascara. She taught her granddaughters to be feminine. Femininity and self-care is about self-confidence and not vanity. As she gets older, taking care of herself is about giving a positive image about the passage of time to younger generations. She is 88 and looking great! The importance is not to look like someone else, but to look like the best version of yourself. When you get older, the idea is to look good for your age, not younger. Good skin doesn't have to be flawless. We should enhance our best features, work with what we've got. What we were born with. Try to age gracefully. It is better to look our age than to look no age at all. We have to treat our skin to our favorite silk blouse. We should hydrate the skin and keep it i --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/delia-folk8/support
British journalist and cookbook author Yasmin Khan writes about Palestinian food tasting alive. But what does that mean? So much, it turns out, and we have a really great conversation about this incredible cuisine and history. Khan spent years reporting for her new book, Zaitoun: Recipes from the Palestinian Kitchen, and she discusses her on-the-ground reporting process. And she does something remarkable: Explaining za’atar (a cool though sometimes confusing Middle Eastern spice blend) in the most succinct, clear manner I’ve ever read. In recipe form! Tune in to find out all about that. Oh yeah, New Yorkers: The best knafeh can be found hidden in Park Slope. Ted is a tour guide in his day job and has walked the Camino a few times now. QUOTE: As you start to love the road, you hate the thought of getting there! Whenever Ted has a chance he plays a 20-minute video to his passengers so that they know what the Camino is. How did you hear about the Camino? In 2014, he watched the film The Way, with Martin Sheen. He then became obsessed with Google searches about the Camino. Did you plan your Camino is detail? Nope! His wife booked his flight and he literally finished work one day and was flying out to Madrid the next. He had no idea where he was going! Ted walked the Frances route in October 2016 and then went back to walk the Portugal Route from Lisbon in November 2017. Is there a difference between these routes? yes, HUGE! On the Portugal route, Ted did not see one single pilgrim on the trail for the first week - not one! His first night on the Portugal route was in a fire station! And it was free - they wouldn’t even take a donation. His 2nd night was spent with people from the church in a house. He tells the emotional story of how strangers gave him hot food. You can hear the passion in Ted’s voice when her talks about being on his own on the Portugal route, and how amazing it was to spend time in nature and with himself. Was it not lonely on the Portugal route? At first yes, but after a few days, he did not feel lonely at all. After Porto it got busy. The French Way is more like a party every night! Was the Camino everything you thought it would be? You will have to listen to the answer on that one! Food - we have a long discussion on food, along with photos. Ted was surprised at the price of wine (and the volume of wine!). He can still remember the flavour of the goat's cheese in his mouth! €10 for a Pilgrim menu was just brilliant. Ted ate that much on the Camino that he certainly did not lose any weight! Are you a spiritual person? No, not really. Ted is not religious or spiritual, he just enjoys an adventure. Did you finish into Santiago with friends or on your own? Did you feel the same sense of achievement the 2nd time in Santiago? Yes, he was very emotional both times. A dream come true? Did you do the Pilgrim mass? Yes, even though I am not religious, I enjoyed the experience. Did you see the big swingy thing? How many times have you seen the film The Way? Just the once! What was your most memorable story - you need to listen to this story, it is amazing!!! He learned a valuable lesson about sharing on that night. What would you say to someone who is thinking of walking The Way? Go for it! It is much easier than you think.
This week I interview John Carroll who now lives in Australia, but you can certainly hear a strong Manchester accent! John spent some time walking the French Way as a group with 7 friends from sunny Oz, but then ventured off on his own to experience a different Camino along the Ingles Route in October 2018. QUOTE: Is from the song. “You will never walk alone”. Highlights: Tip - a good tip to get over jet lag is to know that if you are travelling 10 time zones, then it will take approx 10 days to get over jet lag. How did you hear of the Camino? Not only was John inspired by the film The Way, but he had also read a book called In Search of The Way, by a priest who he had met in England. John walked from Sarria to Santiago (the last part of the French Way with his friends from Oz). What was the main differences between the French Route to the Ingles Route? The Inges Route is very quiet and John was worried that he would be walking it all on his own, but that soon changed! Lots of people from Oz, but not too many from the UK tend to walk the English route. What was the weight of your pack? - about 22lbs / 10kg John talks about walking poles and how valuable they were to his journey. There are many steep ups and downs on both Camino trips. Tip: Always add rubber paws to your walking poles. Did you bring anything that you didn’t use? Yes, I took 6 pairs of socks that I never used! Did you get any blisters? No, but I did hurt some of my toes. He walked into low concrete bollards which hurt his feet. Did you take a luxury item? Yes, a 2nd credit card. John would recommend taking a sleeping bags if you are travelling in October onwards. Did you have a reason for walking the Camino? Yes, for the adventure and to take some time for reflection. Was the Camino everything you thought it would be - yes, and more. Be inspired by the people around you. Not just on the Camino but in everyday life as well.

For Beyond 50's "Style" talks, listen to an interview with Clemence von Mueffling. Her mother and grandmother were beauty editors for French "Vogue." She will share insider tips from top beauty experts to explain the rigorous beauty benchmarks that Frenchwomen adhere to from childhood. According to von Mueffling, French versus American women are better lovers than us, have less bratty children and stay eternally skinny, despite their intravenous consumption of brie and baguettes. For Frenchwomen, it is very important to have the natural look. They don't seek perfection, but to look good for your age. It's really about becoming the best version of yourself. FUNKY PEARLS SPECIAL "CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR" BY DJ TAREK FROM PARIS ♪♫ ♪ with new single!!!! A Wonderful Time (feat. L a Blacksmith) ♪♫ ♪ Now Available on I-Tunes and all other Digital Upload Sites around the world. Thank you and God Bless you all of our Loyal Fans, Friends and Family!! https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/wonderful-time-feat.-blacksmith/id871204635 Biography Like Earth, Wind & Fire and Kool & the Gang before them, Crown Heights Affair artfully bridged the gap between funk and disco, guaranteeing their records new life via sampling by successive generations of rappers and DJs. Originally dubbed New Day Express, the group formed in Brooklyn, NY, in 1967, originally comprising lead vocalist Philip Thomas, guitarist William "Bubba" Anderson, bassist Arnold "Muki" Wilson, keyboardist Stan Johnson, and drummer Raymond "Sugar Ray" Rock. Crown Heights Affair's roster soon expanded to include saxophonist Darryl Gibbs, trumpeter James Baynard, and trombonist Julius Dilligard, Jr., and in 1973 they signed to RCA, releasing their self-titled debut LP the following year. While a hit in New York, the first single, "Super Rod," failed to earn attention across the rest of the country, and when the follow-ups "Leave the Kids Alone" and "Special Kind of Woman" met the same fate, the group was left without a label. At that point Johnson, Gibbs, Baynard, and Dilligard all resigned from Crown Heights Affair, with Howie Young joining on keyboards, Tyrone Demmons coming in on trumpet, and siblings Bertram and Raymond Reid playing saxophone and trombone, respectively. This lineup signed to De-Lite, home to kindred spirits Kool & the Gang, and in 1975 Crown Heights Affair issued its sophomore effort, Dreaming a Dream, with an extended disco mix of the title cut cracking the R&B Top Five and the pop Top 50; "Every Beat of My Heart" and "Foxy Lady" soon followed, further establishing the group's growing reputation among clubgoers. Percussionist Skip Boardley joined the lineup with 1976's Do It Your Way; although the first single, "Dancin'," was a rather shameless knockoff of Isaac Hayes' classic "Theme from 'Shaft'," sales were again respectable, even if the LP's second single, "Do It the French Way," failed to generate much attention. 1978's Dream World was buoyed by De-Lite's new international distribution deal with Polygram. Virtually overnight Crown Heights Affair emerged as major fan favorites in the U.K., with the singles "Galaxy of Love" and "I'm Gonna Love You Forever" both reaching the British pop charts. While the title cut to 1979's Dance Lady Dance was another British hit, the album flopped stateside, prompting Crown Heights Affair to recruit producer Bert DeCoteaux, known for hits with Sister Sledge; the resulting Sure Shot remains a minor masterpiece, highlighted by the disco classic "You Give Me Love," a Top Ten U.K. pop hit during the summer of 1980. But the general public's interest in disco soon took a nosedive, and Crown Heights Affair spent the next two years on hiatus. Minus keyboardist Young, the group resurfaced in 1982 with Think Positive, a failed attempt to update their sound to current tastes. After one final effort, 1983's Struck Gold, Crown Heights Affair split. Bert Reid went on to enjoy some success as a producer, helming Denroy Morgan's underground smash "I'd Do Anything for You" as well as sessions for Unlimited Touch ("I Hear Music in the Streets"), Raw Silk ("Do It to the Music"), and Barbara Tucker ("Stay Together"). As vintage Crown Heights Affair grooves found their way onto latter-day hip-hop and R&B records. Un an plus tard, ils sortent « Do it your way » avec des titres tels « Dancin' », « Music is the way » ou encore « French way ». Crown Heights Affair, suite et fin En 1979, le groupe sort « Dance lady dance », un album qui comprend 6 titres dont « The rock is hot », « Come fly with me » ou encore « Empty soul of mine ».
